Artificial intelligence and sustainable development during the pandemic: An overview of the scientific debates

The current work aims to analyze the main themes related to artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainable development during the pandemic period. This study provides an overview of the specialized literature related to AI and sustainability from the beginning of the pandemic through 2023. The present paper analyses scientific literature emphasizing both artificial intelligence's positive and negative impacts on sustainable development objectives (SDGs). To conduct the research, we employed bibliometric analysis and text-mining techniques to identify the major themes in the literature indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Firstly, we used descriptive measures to identify the authors' impact, the article production by country, the main keywords used, and other descriptive data. We further used data reduction methods based on co-word analysis (such as multiple correspondence analysis) on authors' keywords to show patterns in the themes explored in the literature. Bibliometric analysis was supplemented by text mining using Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) and structural topic modeling on abstracts to provide a comprehensive view of scientific debates on AI and sustainable development. Our research has identified various themes in the literature related to AI and sustainable development. These themes include social sustainability, health-related issues, AI technologies for energy efficiency, sustainability in industry and innovation, IoT technologies for smart and sustainable cities, urban planning, technologies for education and knowledge production, and the impact of technologies on SDGs. We also found that there is a significant positivity bias in the literature when discussing the impact of AI on sustainable development. Despite acknowledging certain risks, the literature tends to focus on the potential benefits of AI across various sectors. In addition, the analysis shows a growing emphasis on energy efficiency, which is facilitated by the use of AI technologies. Our study contributes to a better understanding of current scholarly discussion trends and emerging scientific avenues regarding AI and sustainable development. It also highlights the areas where research is needed and the implications for practitioners and policymakers.

The role of artificial intelligence and fintech in promoting eco-friendly investments and non-greenwashing practices in the US market

This study explores the intricate connections among financial technology (FinTech), artificial intelligence (AI), and eco-friendly markets in the US, shedding light on their dynamic interplay and implications for sustainable investment and policy strategies. Specifically, our research delves into the transformative roles of FinTech and AI in broadening financial access, fostering green financing initiatives, and aligning financial practices with environmentally conscious objectives. We also investigate market reactions among the AI, FinTech, non-greenwashing, and eco-friendly markets during exogenous shocks, offering valuable insights into these markets' interconnectedness. An innovative connectedness approach, the R2 decomposed measures, is employed to capture the contemporaneous and lagged spillover effects using daily data from December 19, 2017, to November 1, 2023. We also focus on constructing a minimum connectedness portfolio using the time-varying parameter vector autoregressive approach. The findings reveal significant volatility connectivity within these intergroups, emphasizing the need for sustainable tech finance policies and real-time monitoring systems to address market fluctuations. Overall, this study contributes to an underexplored area by providing empirical evidence and valuable implications for scholars and policymakers, and can help in guiding sustainable investment and policy strategies aligned with zero-emissions agendas.

The carbon emissions of writing and illustrating are lower for AI than for humans

As AI systems proliferate, their greenhouse gas emissions are an increasingly important concern for human societies. In this article, we present a comparative analysis of the carbon emissions associated with AI systems (ChatGPT, BLOOM, DALL-E2, Midjourney) and human individuals performing equivalent writing and illustrating tasks. Our findings reveal that AI systems emit between 130 and 1500 times less CO2e per page of text generated compared to human writers, while AI illustration systems emit between 310 and 2900 times less CO2e per image than their human counterparts. Emissions analyses do not account for social impacts such as professional displacement, legality, and rebound effects. In addition, AI is not a substitute for all human tasks. Nevertheless, at present, the use of AI holds the potential to carry out several major activities at much lower emission levels than can humans.

Environmental Sustainability and AI in Radiology: A Double-Edged Sword

According to the World Health Organization, climate change is the single biggest health threat facing humanity. The global health care system, including medical imaging, must manage the health effects of climate change while at the same time addressing the large amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated in the delivery of care. Data centers and computational efforts are increasingly large contributors to GHG emissions in radiology. This is due to the explosive increase in big data and artificial intelligence (AI) applications that have resulted in large energy requirements for developing and deploying AI models. However, AI also has the potential to improve environmental sustainability in medical imaging. For example, use of AI can shorten MRI scan times with accelerated acquisition times, improve the scheduling efficiency of scanners, and optimize the use of decision-support tools to reduce low-value imaging. The purpose of this Radiology in Focus article is to discuss this duality at the intersection of environmental sustainability and AI in radiology. Further discussed are strategies and opportunities to decrease AI-related emissions and to leverage AI to improve sustainability in radiology, with a focus on health equity. Co-benefits of these strategies are explored, including lower cost and improved patient outcomes. Finally, knowledge gaps and areas for future research are highlighted.

Research agenda for using artificial intelligence in health governance: interpretive scoping review and framework

BACKGROUND

The governance of health systems is complex in nature due to several intertwined and multi-dimensional factors contributing to it. Recent challenges of health systems reflect the need for innovative approaches that can minimize adverse consequences of policies. Hence, there is compelling evidence of a distinct outlook on the health ecosystem using artificial intelligence (AI). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the roles of AI and its applications in health system governance through an interpretive scoping review of current evidence.

METHOD

This study intended to offer a research agenda and framework for the applications of AI in health systems governance. To include shreds of evidence with a greater focus on the application of AI in health governance from different perspectives, we searched the published literature from 2000 to 2023 through PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science Databases.

RESULTS

Our findings showed that integrating AI capabilities into health systems governance has the potential to influence three cardinal dimensions of health. These include social determinants of health, elements of governance, and health system tasks and goals. AI paves the way for strengthening the health system's governance through various aspects, i.e., intelligence innovations, flexible boundaries, multidimensional analysis, new insights, and cognition modifications to the health ecosystem area.

CONCLUSION

AI is expected to be seen as a tool with new applications and capabilities, with the potential to change each component of governance in the health ecosystem, which can eventually help achieve health-related goals.

Exploring the relationships between attitudes toward emission trading schemes, artificial intelligence, climate entrepreneurship, and sustainable performance

The research objective of this research paper is to examine the relationships between organizational commitment to emission trading schemes, artificial intelligence, and climate entrepreneurship, as well as their impact on sustainable performance, i.e., environmental and organizational performance in organizations. This study aims to identify the key drivers and barriers to the adoption of these factors and to understand how they influence environmental and organizational performance. The study utilizes a cause-and-effect design on the sampled size of 387 subjects and employs the Smart PLS version 4.0 statistical tool to estimate the interactions between all constructs in the structural equation modeling. The research questions aim to explore the key drivers and barriers to the adoption of these factors in organization and their impact on sustainable performance, i.e., environmental and organizational performance. The study hypothesizes that organizational commitment to emission trading schemes, AI, and climate entrepreneurship has a positive impact on sustainable performances such as environmental and organizational performance. The findings suggest that attitudes toward AI and emission trading schemes have a direct impact on climate entrepreneurship, environmental performance, and organizational performance. By considering these factors together, the study seeks to uncover the synergistic effects and potential interactions between them and sheds light on their combined influence on environmental and organizational performance. Organizations can enhance environmental and organizational performance by prioritizing their attitudes toward emission trading schemes, AI, and climate entrepreneurship through resource allocation, technology investment, and fostering a climate entrepreneurship mindset. The research concludes that businesses that demonstrate high organizational commitment, positive attitude toward the ETS, and a focus on climate entrepreneurship experiences improved environmental and organizational performance.

Considerations for integrating wearables into the everyday healthcare practice

Wearable technologies are becoming ever more popular as suggested tools for use in modern medicine. Studies evidence their growing pragmatism and provision of objective data for a more informative and personalised approach to patient care. Yet many wearables are one dimensional, despite the underlying technology being common across a large array of tools. That is primarily due to the accompanying software, unmodifiable or black box-based scripts that generally lack accessibility or modification, meaning wearables may often get discarded. Use of wearables for sustainable healthcare needs careful consideration.

The Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights: In Search of Enaction, at Risk of Inaction

The US is promoting a new vision of a “Good AI Society” through its recent AI Bill of Rights. This offers a promising vision of community-oriented equity unique amongst peer countries. However, it leaves the door open for potential rights violations. Furthermore, it may have some federal impact, but it is non-binding, and without concrete legislation, the private sector is likely to ignore it.

Artificial intelligence in support of the circular economy: ethical considerations and a path forward

The world’s current model for economic development is unsustainable. It encourages high levels of resource extraction, consumption, and waste that undermine positive environmental outcomes. Transitioning to a circular economy (CE) model of development has been proposed as a sustainable alternative. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a crucial enabler for CE. It can aid in designing robust and sustainable products, facilitate new circular business models, and support the broader infrastructures needed to scale circularity. However, to date, considerations of the ethical implications of using AI to achieve a transition to CE have been limited. This article addresses this gap. It outlines how AI is and can be used to transition towards CE, analyzes the ethical risks associated with using AI for this purpose, and supports some recommendations to policymakers and industry on how to minimise these risks.

Smart cities: reviewing the debate about their ethical implications

This paper considers a host of definitions and labels attached to the concept of smart cities to identify four dimensions that ground a review of ethical concerns emerging from the current debate. These are: (1) network infrastructure, with the corresponding concerns of control, surveillance, and data privacy and ownership; (2) post-political governance, embodied in the tensions between public and private decision-making and cities as post-political entities; (3) social inclusion, expressed in the aspects of citizen participation and inclusion, and inequality and discrimination; and (4) sustainability, with a specific focus on the environment as an element to protect but also as a strategic element for the future. Given the persisting disagreements around the definition of a smart city, the article identifies in these four dimensions a more stable reference framework within which ethical concerns can be clustered and discussed. Identifying these dimensions makes possible a review of the ethical implications of smart cities that is transversal to their different types and resilient towards the unsettled debate over their definition.

Using Artificial Intelligence for Space Challenges: A Survey

Artificial intelligence is applied to many fields and contributes to many important applications and research areas, such as intelligent data processing, natural language processing, autonomous vehicles, and robots. The adoption of artificial intelligence in several fields has been the subject of many research papers. Still, recently, the space sector is a field where artificial intelligence is receiving significant attention. This paper aims to survey the most relevant problems in the field of space applications solved by artificial intelligence techniques. We focus on applications related to mission design, space exploration, and Earth observation, and we provide a taxonomy of the current challenges. Moreover, we present and discuss current solutions proposed for each challenge to allow researchers to identify and compare the state of the art in this context.

An Assessment of China's Digital Trade Development and Influencing Factors

The pattern and scale of commerce worldwide have been greatly transformed by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and technological advancement; digital trade has become the primary form of trade in the digital economy. On the basis of information network infrastructure, information technology level, digital industrialization level, and industrial digitalization level, this study establishes a comprehensive assessment system that applies an entropy-TOPSIS model to evaluate digital trade development level in China. The results indicate that digital trade in China was steadily growing between 2010 and 2019. A principal component analysis is conducted to identify factors affecting the digital trade development level in China. The analysis results suggest that Internet development, population income, industrial structure, payment convenience level, fixed asset investment, online transaction scale, and economic development all have positive effects on the digital trade development level in China, with payment convenience level having the greatest influence. By contrast, state intervention and degree of dependence on foreign trade have a negative effect on digital trade development.

Sustainable AI and Intergenerational Justice

Recently, attention has been drawn to the sustainability of artificial intelligence (AI) in terms of environmental costs. However, sustainability is not tantamount to the reduction of environmental costs. By shifting the focus to intergenerational justice as one of the constitutive normative pillars of sustainability, the paper identifies a reductionist view on the sustainability of AI and constructively contributes a conceptual extension. It further develops a framework that establishes normative issues of intergenerational justice raised by the uses of AI. The framework reveals how using AI for decision support to policies with long-term impacts can negatively affect future persons. In particular, the analysis demonstrates that uses of AI for decision support to policies of environmental protection or climate mitigation include assumptions about social discounting and future persons’ preferences. These assumptions are highly controversial and have a significant influence on the weight assigned to the potentially detrimental impacts of a policy on future persons. Furthermore, these underlying assumptions are seldom transparent within AI. Subsequently, the analysis provides a list of assessment questions that constitutes a guideline for the revision of AI techniques in this regard. In so doing, insights about how AI can be made more sustainable become apparent.

Mindful Application of Digitalization for Sustainable Development: The Digitainability Assessment Framework

Digitalization is widely recognized as a transformative power for sustainable development. Careful alignment of progress made by digitalization with the globally acknowledged Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is crucial for inclusive and holistic sustainable development in the digital era. However, limited reference has been made in SDGs about harnessing the opportunities offered by digitalization capabilities. Moreover, research on inhibiting or enabling effects of digitalization considering its multi-faceted interlinkages with the SDGs and their targets is fragmented. There are only limited instances in the literature examining and categorizing the impact of digitalization on sustainable development. To overcome this gap, this paper introduces a new Digitainability Assessment Framework (DAF) for context-aware practical assessment of the impact of the digitalization intervention on the SDGs. The DAF facilitates in-depth assessment of the many diverse technical, social, ethical, and environmental aspects of a digital intervention by systematically examining its impact on the SDG indicators. Our approach draws on and adapts concepts of the Theory of Change (ToC). The DAF should support developers, users as well policymakers by providing a 360-degree perspective on the impact of digital services or products, as well as providing hints for its possible improvement. We demonstrate the application of the DAF with the three test case studies illustrating how it supports in providing a holistic view of the relation between digitalization and SDGs.
