Abstract
Background Fractures of the vertebral column, encompassing various spinal injuries, represent a significant public health burden worldwide. These injuries can lead to long-term disability, reduced quality of life, and substantial healthcare costs. Methods We utilized comprehensive data sources from the Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx). The study employed the incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) metric to quantify the burden. First, numbers and age-standardized rates (ASRs) of incidence, prevalence, and YLDs were assessed globally and by sub-types including sex, age, socio-demographic index (SDI) regions, Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) regions, and countries in 2021. Furthermore, the temporal trend of the disease burden was explored by the linear regression model from 1990 to 2021. The cluster analysis was used to evaluate the changing pattern of related disease burden across GBD regions. Finally, the age-period-cohort (APC) model were used to predict the future disease burden in the next 25 years. Results Exposure to fracture of vertebral column contributed to 7,497,446 incidence, 5,371,438 prevalence, and 545,923 YLDs globally in 2021. The disease burden was higher in males than in females. And it was higher in older adults. High SDI regions were high-risk areas. From 1990 to 2021, the number of cases showed the increasing trend, and the ASRs showed the decreasing trend. The predicted results showed that the number of cases for both genders would still increase from 2022 to 2046. Conclusion Our findings highlight the substantial and growing global burden of vertebral column fractures, with significant variations across regions and countries. Targeted interventions to address modifiable risk factors, such as osteoporosis and falls, are essential to mitigate the burden.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the association between a history of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and osteoporosis with specific characteristics. The results showed that MetS was inversely associated with osteoporosis. In contrast, MetS was positively associated with osteoporosis in both obese men and postmenopausal obese women. PURPOSE Although several previous studies have investigated the association between MetS and osteoporosis, their findings remain controversial. This study aimed to examine the association between a MetS history and osteoporosis using a subset of data from a large, long-term, national database. METHODS This nested case-control study used the National Health Information Database (NHID) of the Korea National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) from 2009 to 2017. Osteoporosis (n = 459,771) and control (n = 459,771) participants were matched in a 1:1 ratio by age, gender, income, and region of residence. MetS was defined based on the modified National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for osteoporosis in patients with MetS and its components were analyzed using logistic regression. Subgroup analyses were performed according to the combination of gender, menopausal status, and obesity status. RESULTS The adjusted OR (95% CI) for osteoporosis in patients with MetS was 0.95 (0.94-0.96). This finding was consistent with the subgroup analyses in normal weight men, premenopausal (pre-MP) women with all obesity statuses, and postmenopausal (post-MP) underweight and normal weight women. In contrast, the opposite was observed for obese men (OR = 1.05, 95% CI = 1.01-1.09) and post-MP obese women (OR = 1.05, 95% CI = 1.01-1.08). CONCLUSION This study results suggested that MetS was associated with a low occurrence of osteoporosis. In contrast, MetS was associated with a high occurrence of osteoporosis in both obese men and post-MP obese women.

Abstract
CONTEXT Although it is well documented that estrogen hormone is positively associated with bone mineral density and lower risk of fracture, there are limited studies on the association between duration of endogenous estrogen exposure (EEE) and fracture, especially by longitudinal design. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the relationship between EEE with fracture incidence by longitudinal design in a community-based study. METHODS A total of 5269 eligible postmenarcheal women, including 2411 premenopausal and 2858 menopausal women, were recruited from among the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study. Cox proportional hazards regression model with adjustment of potential confounders was performed to assess the relationship between duration of EEE and incident of any hospitalized fractures. RESULTS A total of 26.7% (1409/5269) women were menopausal at the baseline, and 2858 of the remaining participants reached menopause at the end of follow-up. Results of the unadjusted model demonstrated that the EEE z-score was negatively associated with fracture incidence [unadjusted hazard ratio (HR) 0.81, 95% CI 0.68-0.96] in postmenarchal women, indicating that per 1-SD increase of EEE z-score, the hazard of fracture reduced by 19%. Results remained statistically unchanged after adjustment for potential confounders (adjusted HR 0.70, 95% CI 0.58-0.86). CONCLUSION The findings of this cohort study suggest that a longer duration of EEE has a protective effect on fracture incidence; a point that needs to be considered in fracture risk assessment.

Abstract
Fruits and fruit products are an essential part of the human diet. Their health benefits are directly related to their content of valuable bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, anthocyanins, or vitamins. Heat treatments allow the production of stable and safe products; however, their sensory quality and chemical composition are subject to significant negative changes. The use of emerging non-thermal technologies, such as HPP (High Pressure Processing), has the potential to inactivate the microbial load while exerting minimal effects on the nutritional and organoleptic properties of food products. HPP is an adequate alternative to heat treatments and simultaneously achieves the purposes of preservation and maintenance of freshness characteristics and health benefits of the final products. However, compounds responsible for antioxidant activity can be significantly affected during treatment and storage of HPP-processed products. Therefore, this article reviews the effect of HPP treatment and subsequent storage on the antioxidant activity (oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity assay, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay, 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging capacity assay or Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) assay), and on the total phenolic, flavonoid, carotenoid, anthocyanin and vitamin contents of fruits and different processed fruit-based products.
