Shining a light on environmental science: Recent advances in SERS technology for rapid detection of persistent toxic substances

Persistent toxic substances (PTS) represent a paramount environmental issue in the 21st century. Understanding the concentrations and forms of PTS in the environment is crucial for accurately assessing their environmental health impacts. This article presents a concise overview of the components of PTS, pertinent environmental regulations, and conventional detection methodologies. Additionally, we offer an in-depth review of the principles, development, and practical applications of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in environmental monitoring, emphasizing the advancements in detecting trace amounts of PTS in complex environmental matrices. Recent progress in enhancing SERS sensitivity, improving selectivity, and practical implementations are detailed, showcasing innovative materials and methods. Integrating SERS with advanced algorithms are highlighted as pivotal areas for future research.

Contaminant mass discharge estimation of a sulfonamide plume by use of hydraulic profiling tool (HPT) and fluorescence techniques

The contaminant mass discharge is a relevant metric to evaluate the risk that a groundwater plume poses to water resources. However, this assessment is often vitiated by a high uncertainty inherent to the assessment method and often limited number of measurement points to carry out the assessment. Direct-Push techniques in combination with profiling tools and dedicated sampling can be an interesting alternative to increase the measurement point density and hence reduce the mass discharge uncertainty. The main objective of our study was to assess if DP logging and sampling could be employed to get a reasonable estimate of contaminant mass discharge in a large sulfonamide contaminant plume (> 1500 m wide), compared to a more traditional approach based on monitoring wells. To do so, an Hydraulic Profiling Tool (HPT) logging with a dedicated site calibration was used to estimate the hydraulic conductivity field. The sulfonamide concentrations were inferred from the compound fluorescence properties measured by laboratory spectrofluorometry (λEx / λEm = 255/340 nm) and a dedicated log-log linear regression model. Our results show that HPT-derived hydraulic conductivity values are in good agreement with the monitoring well results, and within the order of magnitude reported in similar studies or indirect geophysical techniques. Fluorescence appears as a powerful proxy for the sulfonamide concentration levels. Ultimately, the contaminant mass discharge estimate from HPT and fluorescence techniques lies within a factor 2 from the estimate by monitoring wells, with 549 [274-668] and 776 [695-879] kg/yr respectively. Overall, this study highlights that DP logging tools combined with indirect methods (correlation with fluorescence) could provide a relevant contaminant mass discharge estimate for some optically active substances, given that a proper calibration phase is carried out.

Fabrication of versatile Fe3O4/GO/Au composite nanomaterial as SERS-active substrate for detection of pesticide residue

Highly active Fe3O4/GO/Au composite nanomaterial was fabricated as a substrate of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and applied for pesticide residue detection. The three-layer multifunctional Fe3O4/GO/Au nanoparticles (NPs) were designed by facile method, with high hotspots, and were characterized by various techniques, including ultraviolet spectrophotometry (UV), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared absorption spectrometer (IR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The performance of Fe3O4/GO/Au was evaluated by Raman spectroscopy with R6G as a probe molecule to verify its enhancement effect. It exhibited a strong Raman signal with 10-6 M of R6G. Furthermore, the presence of Fe3O4/GO/Au nanohybrid enabled the SERS-based method to detect mancozeb and showed an excellent linear relationship in the range of 0.25-25 ppm, with a low limit of detection (0.077 ppm), satisfactory EF, stability, and repeatability. In addition, the mechanism of SERS enhancement with electromagnetic mechanism (EM) and chemical mechanism (CM) was discussed in detail. Therefore, the proposed SERS approach holds promise as an auxiliary technique for screening contaminated agricultural products, environmental sample, and food in the future.

Wearable sensor supports in-situ and continuous monitoring of plant health in precision agriculture era

Plant health is intricately linked to crop quality, food security and agricultural productivity. Obtaining accurate plant health information is of paramount importance in the realm of precision agriculture. Wearable sensors offer an exceptional avenue for investigating plant health status and fundamental plant science, as they enable real-time and continuous in-situ monitoring of physiological biomarkers. However, a comprehensive overview that integrates and critically assesses wearable plant sensors across various facets, including their fundamental elements, classification, design, sensing mechanism, fabrication, characterization and application, remains elusive. In this study, we provide a meticulous description and systematic synthesis of recent research progress in wearable sensor properties, technology and their application in monitoring plant health information. This work endeavours to serve as a guiding resource for the utilization of wearable plant sensors, empowering the advancement of plant health within the precision agriculture paradigm.

Deep Learning Enabled SERS Identification of Gaseous Molecules on Flexible Plasmonic MOF Nanowire Films

Through the capture of a target molecule at the metal surface with a highly confined electromagnetic field induced by surface plasmon, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) emerges as a spectral analysis technology with high sensitivity. However, accurate SERS identification of a gaseous molecule with low density and high velocity is still a challenge due to its difficulty in capture. In this work, a flexible paper-based plasmonic metal-organic framework (MOF) film consisting of Ag nanowires@ZIF-8 (AgNWs@ZIF-8) is fabricated for SERS detection of gaseous molecules. Benefiting from its micronanopores generated by the nanowire network and ZIF-8 shell, the effective capture of the gaseous molecule is achieved, and its SERS spectrum is obtained in this paper-based flexible plasmonic MOF nanowire film. With optimal structure parameters, spectra of gaseous 4-aminothiophenol, 4-mercaptophenol, and dithiohydroquinone demonstrate that this film has good SERS performance, which could maintain obvious Raman signals within 30 days during reproducible detection. To realize SERS identification of gaseous molecules, deep learning is performed based on the SERS spectra of the mixed gaseous analyte obtained in this flexible porous film. The results point out that an artificial neural network algorithm could identify gaseous aldehydes (gaseous biomarker of colorectal cancer) in simulated exhaled breath with high accuracy at 93.7%. The integration of the flexible paper-based film sensors with deep learning offers a promising new approach for noninvasive colorectal cancer screening. Our work explores SERS applications in gaseous analyte detection and has broad potential in clinical medicine, food safety, environmental monitoring, etc.

Detection of organic dyes using Ag NPAs/SMP SERS substrate produced via sandpaper template-assisted lithography and liquid-liquid interface self-assembly

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive and reliable fingerprinting technique. However, its analytical capability is closely related to the quality of a SERS substrate used for the analysis. In particular, conventional colloidal substrates possess disadvantages in terms of controllability, stability, and reproducibility, which limit their application. In order to address these issues, a simple, cost-effective, and efficient SERS substrate based on silver nanoparticle arrays (Ag NPAs) and sandpaper-molded polydimethylsiloxane (SMP) was proposed in this work. Successfully prepared via template lithography and liquid-liquid interface self-assembly (LLISA), the substrate can be applied to the specific detection of organic dyes in the environment. The substrate exhibited good SERS performance, and the limit of detection (LOD) of rhodamine 6G (R6G) was shown to be 10-7 M under the optimal conditions (1000 grit sandpaper) with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 7.76%. Moreover, the SERS signal intensity was maintained at 60% of the initial intensity after the substrate was stored for 30 days. In addition, the Ag NPAs/SMP SERS substrate was also employed to detect crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) with the LODs of 10-6 M and 10-7 M, respectively. In summary, the Ag NPAs/SMP SERS substrate prepared in this study has great potential for the detection of organic dyes in ecological environments.

Bioinspired Multifunctional Silver Nanoparticles for Optical Sensing Applications: A Sustainable Approach

Silver nanoparticles developed via biosynthesis are the most fascinating nanosized particles and encompassed with excellent physicochemical properties. The bioinspired nanoparticles with different shapes and sizes have attracted huge attention due to their stability, low cost, environmental friendliness, and use of less hazardous chemicals. This is an ideal method for synthesizing a range of nanosized metal particles from plants and biomolecules. Optical biosensors are progressively being fabricated for the attainment of sustainability by using opportunities offered by nanotechnology. This review focuses mainly on tuning the optical properties of the metal nanoparticles for optical sensing to explore the importance and applications of bioinspired silver nanoparticles. Further, this review deliberates the role of bioinspired silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in biomedical, agricultural, environmental, and energy applications. Profound insight into the antimicrobial properties of these nanoparticles is also appreciated. Tailor-made bioinspired nanoparticles with effectuating characteristics can unsurprisingly target tumor cells and distribute enwrapped payloads intensively. Existing challenges and prospects of bioinspired Ag NPs are also summarized. This review is expected to deliver perceptions about the progress of the next generation of bioinspired Ag NPs and their outstanding performances in various fields by promoting sustainable practices for fabricating optical sensing devices.
