Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the influence of lipid metabolism on the risk of sarcopenia. METHODS Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was used to determine causality. A total of 179 lipid metabolism data points were used for exposure, and the data were obtained from a plasma lipid metabolite study of 7174 participants. The total muscle mass and total muscle strength, as well as the muscle strength and muscle mass of different sex groups, were selected as the relevant traits of sarcopenia. Data for outcomes were obtained from the UK Biobank, and sample sizes ranged from 135 468 to 450 243. Inverse-variance weighted (IVW), as the main method for evaluating the causal relationship between lipid metabolites and sarcopenia, uses the false discovery rate (FDR) for multiple comparisons and conducts heterogeneity, pleiotropy, and reverse causality tests. RESULTS Twenty-seven lipid metabolites, mainly phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, ceramide, triacylglycerol, sphingomyelin, and sterol ester, were found to be associated with the risk of sarcopenia. Ceramide (d40:1), ceramide (d40:2), and sterol ester are risk factors for decreased muscle mass and strength. There is a positive causal relationship between various phosphatidylcholine lipids and muscle mass and strength. Sphingomyelin (d42:2) is a protective factor for total muscle strength and female muscle strength. There are inconsistent effects between different lipid metabolites, triacylglycerol, and muscle strength and muscle mass. CONCLUSIONS There was a causal relationship between 27 lipid metabolites and sarcopenia traits, and targeting specific lipid metabolites may benefit sarcopenia diagnosis, disease assessment, and treatment.

Abstract
This study explored the association of physical activity (PA) from different dimensions including intensity, frequency, duration, and volume with possible sarcopenia (PSA), and established the PA cut-off value to identify PSA in middle-aged and older adults. The data in this study were from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2015. There were 7,957 adults aged over 45 years in the analysis. PA was assessed using a modified version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form. Muscle strength and physical performance were measured to define PSA. Results showed that men spending at least 3 days each week, more than 10 min each time on vigorous-intensity PA, or a minimum of 933 Mets on total PA each week had a lower risk of PSA. In women, spending at least 3 days each week, more than 30 min each time on moderate-intensity PA, or taking at least 6 days each week, more than 120 min each time on low-intensity PA, or a minimum of 933 Mets on total PA each week was associated with a lower risk of PSA. In older adults (≥ 65 years), spending at least one day each week, more than 30 min each time on vigorous-intensity PA, or taking a minimum of 933 Mets on total PA each week was linked with a decreased risk of PSA. However, no significant associations were found between any PA dimensions and PSA in middle-aged adults (45-64 years). A receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that the PA cut-off value was 695 and 693 Mets each week for predicting PSA for men and women. The findings suggested that the intensity, frequency, duration, and weekly volume of PA is associated with the risk of PSA in middle-aged and older adults, and the association largely depends on sex and age. The PA cut-off value may be an early indication for a higher risk of sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is an age-related condition that can lead to fragility fractures and other serious consequences. The literature data on the impact of obesity on bone health are contradictory. The main reasons for this discrepancy could be the imperfect nature of the body mass index (BMI) as a marker of obesity, the metabolic status (inflammation and metabolically healthy obesity), and/or heterogeneity in bone variables and architecture or sex. AIMS To examine the relationship between bone variables and three validated obesity criteria. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, participants were classified as obese according to their BMI, waist circumference (WC), and fat mass (FM). Bone variables and architecture were assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and peripheral quantitative computed tomography, respectively. RESULTS One hundred sixty-eight adults aged 55 or over (men: 68%) were included. 48 (28%) participants were obese according to the BMI, with 108 (64%) according to the FM, and 146 (87%) according to the WC. Bone variables were positively correlated with WC and BMI (Pearson's r = 0.2-0.42). In men only, the obesity measures were negatively correlated with cortical bone density (Pearson's r = - 0.32 to - 0.19) and positively correlated with cortical bone area (Pearson's r = 0.22-0.39). CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that independent of sex and obesity criteria, when significant, being obese seems to lead to higher bone parameters than being non-obese, except for cortical bone density. Thus, in the obese population, assessing cortical density might help the physician to identify bone alteration. Further researches are needed to confirm our findings.

Abstract
AIM This study investigated the prevalence of possible sarcopenia (PSA) in a large sample of middle-aged and older adults, and determined the association between PSA, major chronic diseases and the number of chronic diseases. METHODS A total of 14 917 adults aged ≥40 years were included in the analysis. The handgrip strength and the five-time chair stand test were used to assess PSA. The participants' major chronic diseases were divided into 14 categories. Four categories were created based on the participants' number of chronic illnesses: 0, 1, 2 and ≥3. RESULTS The present study found an overall prevalence of PSA of 23.6% among Chinese middle-aged and older adults aged ≥40 years, with the risk increasing with advancing age. PSA was significantly associated with most categories of chronic diseases and multimorbidity. The closely independent associations were obtained for stroke; emotional, nervous or psychiatric problems; chronic lung disease, asthma, heart disease, hypertension and arthritis or rheumatism. Compared with participants with 0 chronic disease, those with two or more chronic diseases had higher odds for PSA. However, the association between PSA and the number of chronic diseases varied in different sex and age groups. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that PSA is associated with major chronic diseases among middle-aged and older adults. People with two or more chronic diseases have a greater likelihood of PSA compared with those without chronic diseases, and the association between PSA and the number of chronic diseases largely depended on sex and age. Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence from the literature demonstrates that the risk of decreased handgrip strength is associated with various health issues, particularly in older persons. To make judgments regarding their general health condition that are well-informed for longevity, it is crucial to assess the risk level of decreased handgrip strength among community-dwelling older adult Indians. However, no study has examined the relationship between biological aging and the risk of decreased handgrip strength in Indian men and women aged 60 and older. The goal of the current study was to fill this gap in the literature. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we included 31,464 (15,098 men and 16,366 women) community-dwelling older adult Indians aged 60 years and older using data from the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI). The LASI is the world's most extensive and India's first multidisciplinary, internationally harmonized, longitudinal aging study. It has enrolled 72,250 individuals aged 45 and above across all 28 states and 8 union territories of India. Secondary analysis of biological ageing was performed by stratifying for age groups (60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, and 85 + years) for both genders. The dominant right and nondominant left handgrip strength was assessed using the portable Smedley's Hand Dynamometer. All individuals had a dominant right hand. The adjusted logistic regression analysis assessed the association between biological ageing and the risk of decreased handgrip strength for both genders. RESULTS Compared to those between the ages of 60-64, those at age 65 and those aged 85 and above had 1-fold and 12-fold odds of decreasing handgrip strength, respectively. Men 85 years or older had a 12-fold higher chance than women in the same age group of having decreased handgrip strength. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that community-dwelling older adult Indians aged 65 years and older are significantly associated with a higher risk of decreased handgrip strength, especially among older men. The results of this study can help assess and implement handgrip strength measurement in medicine for older Indians as part of regular admission assessment, particularly for older men.

Abstract
Sarcopenic obesity is a new category of obesity and is a specific condition of sarcopenia. This study aimed to find the relationship of the basal metabolic rate (BMR) and body water distribution with muscle health and their prospective roles in screening for sarcopenic obesity and sarcopenia. The role of nutrients such as carbohydrates in the relationship was further detected. A total of 402 elderly subjects were recruited. Body composition was estimated by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Sarcopenia was defined by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019. The cutoff values were determined by the receiver operating characteristic curve. Mediation analyses were performed using SPSS PROCESS. Higher BMR and BMR/body surface area (BSA) were protective factors against sarcopenic obesity (OR = 0.047, p = 0.004; OR = 0.035, p = 0.002) and sarcopenia (OR = 0.085, p = 0.001; OR = 0.100, p = 0.003) in elderly people. Low extracellular water (ECW)/intracellular water (ICW) and ECW/total body water (TBW) were negatively correlated with the skeletal muscle index (SMI). The intake of dietary carbohydrates in people with sarcopenic obesity was the lowest, but in subjects with obesity, it was the highest (p = 0.023). The results of the moderated mediation model showed that BMR fully mediated the positive relationship between carbohydrates and SMI, which was more obvious in the population with an abnormal body water distribution. BMR or BMR/BSA had the potential role of predicting a higher risk of sarcopenic obesity and sarcopenia. Higher BMR and lower ECW/ICW and ECW/TBW may benefit muscle health. The overconsumption of carbohydrates (especially > AMDR) might be a risk factor for obesity. Moderate dietary carbohydrate intake might promote SMI by regulating BMR and body water distribution in the elderly.
