Assessment of Potential Heavy Metal Contamination in the Peri-urban Agricultural Soils of 31 Provincial Capital Cities in China

A case study of environmental pollution by pathogenic bacteria and metal(oid)s at Soran Landfill Site, Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan Region

Environmental pollution is a serious issue all around the world, especially when it is caused by metal(oid)s and pathogenic microorganisms. This study reports here for the first time on the contamination of soil and water with metal(oid)s and pathogenic bacteria directly resulting from the Soran Landfill Site. Soran landfill is a level 2 solid waste disposal site that lacks leachate collection infrastructure. The site is potentially an environmental and public hazard caused by metal(oid)s content and significantly dangerous pathogenic microorganisms through leachate release into the soil and nearby river. This study reports on the levels of the metal(oid)s content of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Pb, Zn, and Ni obtained by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer in soil, leachate stream mud, and leachate samples. Five pollution indices are used to assess potential environmental risks. According to the indices, Cd and Pb contamination is significant, whereas As, Cu, Mn, Mo, and Zn pollution is moderate. A total of 32 isolates of bacteria were defined from soil, leachate stream mud, and liquid leachate samples: 18, 9, and 5, respectively. Moreover, 16 s rRNA analysis suggested that the isolates belong to three enteric bacterial phyla of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes. The closest GenBank matches of 16S rDNA sequences indicated the presence of the genera: Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Lysinibacillus, Exiguobacterium, Trichococcus, Providencia, Enterococcus, Macrococcus, Serratia, Salinicoccus, Proteus, Rhodococcus, Brevibacterium, Shigella, Micrococcus, Morganella, Corynebacterium, Escherichia, and Acinetobacter. The identity percentage was mostly between 95%-100%. The results of this study show the levels of microbiological and geochemical contamination of soils, surface and potentially ground water with harmful microorganisms and toxic metal(oid)s originating specifically from Soran landfill leachate which subsequently incorporated into the surrounding environment, creating thus a considerable health and environmental risk.

Levels of heavy metal in soil and vegetable and associated health risk in peri-urban areas across China

Peri-urban vegetable field plays an essential role in providing vegetables for local residents. Because of its particularity, it is affected by both industrial and agricultural activities which have led to the accumulations of heavy metal in soil. So far, information on heavy metal pollution status, spatial features, and human health risks in peri-urban vegetable areas across China is still scarce. To fill this gap, we systematically compiled soil and vegetable data collected from 123 articles published between 2010 and 2022 at a national level. The pollution status of heavy metals (i.e., cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn)) in peri-urban vegetable soils and vegetables were investigated. To evaluate the levels of heavy metal pollution in soil and human health risks, the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and target hazard quotient (HQ) were calculated. The results showed that mean concentrations of Cd, Hg, As, Pb, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn in peri-urban vegetable soils were 0.50, 0.53, 12.03, 41.97, 55.56, 37.69, 28.55, and 75.38 mg kg^-1, respectively. The main pollutants in peri-urban vegetable soil were Cd and Hg, and 85.25% and 92.86% of the soil samples had I_geo > 1, respectively. The mean I_geo values of this regions followed the order of northwest > central > south > north > east > southwest > northeast for Cd and northeast > northwest > north > southwest > east > central > south for Hg. The mean Cd, Hg, As, Pb, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn concentrations in vegetables were 0.30, 0.26, 0.37, 0.54, 1.17, 6.17, 1.96, and 18.56 mg kg^-1, respectively. Approximately 87.01% (Cd), 71.43% (Hg), 20% (As), 65.15% (Pb), 27.08% (Cr) of the vegetable samples exceeded the safety requirement values. The vegetables grown in central, northwest, and northern China accumulated much more heavy metals than those grown in other regions. As the HQ values for adults, 53.25% (Cd), 71.43% (Hg), 84.00% (As), and 58.33% (Cr) of the sampled vegetables were higher than 1. For children, the HQ values were higher than 1 for 66.23% (Cd), 73.81% (Hg), 86.00% (As), and 87.50% (Cr) of the sampled vegetables. The findings of this study demonstrate that the situation of heavy metal pollution in peri-urban vegetable areas across China are not optimistic and residents who consume the vegetables are at high risk of health issues. To ensure soil quality and human health, strategies should be taken to guide vegetable production and remedy soil pollution in peri-urban areas with the rapidly urbanizing China.

Selection of rice and maize varieties with low cadmium accumulation and derivation of soil environmental thresholds in karst

Cadmium (Cd) is considered the primary dietary toxic element. Previous studies have demonstrated significant differences in heavy metal accumulation among crop species. However, this information in karst areas with low heavy metal activity is missing. In this study, the uptake and accumulation characteristics of cadmium in soil-crop samples of group 504 in the core karst region of East Asia were analyzed. Cadmium low-accumulating maize and rice were screened using cluster and Pareto analytic methods. In addition, a new method, the species-sensitive distribution model (SSD), was proposed, which could be used to estimate the environmental threshold for cadmium in regional cropland. The results showed that both maize and rice soils in the research area were contaminated with varying degrees of cadmium. The total concentrations of cadmium ω(T-Cd) in maize and rice fields are 0.18-1.32 and 0.20-4.42 mg kg^-1, respectively. The ω(T-Cd) of heavy metals in maize kernels and rice grains is 0.002-0.429 and 0.003-0.393 mg kg^-1, respectively. The bioaccumulation factor (BCF) of cadmium in maize ranged from 0.0079 to 0.9701, with a coefficient of variation of 1.71; the BCF of cadmium in rice ranged from 0.0074 to 0.1345, with a coefficient of variation of 0.99. According to cluster and Pareto analyses, the maize crop varieties with low cadmium accumulation suitable for local cultivation were screened as JHY809, JDY808, AD778, SN3H and SY13, and the rice varieties were DMY6188, GY725, NY6368, SY451 and DX4103. In addition, the environmental cadmium threshold ranges of 0.30-10.05 mg kg^-1 and 0.89-24.39 mg kg^-1 for maize and rice soils, respectively, were deduced in this study. This threshold will ensure that 5-95% of maize and rice will not be contaminated with cadmium in the soil.

Geochemical Fractionation and Source Identification of Pb and Cd in Riparian Soils and River Sediments from Three Lower Reaches Located in the Pearl River Delta

Pb and Cd accumulation in riparian soils and river sediments in river basins is a challenging pollution issue due to the persistence and bioaccumulation of these two trace metals. Understanding the migration characteristics and input sources of these metals is the key to preventing metal pollution. This study was conducted to explore the contents, geochemical fractionation, and input sources of Pb and Cd in riparian soils and river sediments from three lower reaches of the Pearl River Delta located in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The total concentration of all Pb and Cd values exceeded the background values to varying degrees, and the exchangeable fraction of Cd in riparian soils and river sediments accounted for the largest proportion, while that of Pb was dominated by the residual fraction. Geoaccumulation index calculations showed that in the riparian soils, the average accumulation degree of Pb (0.52) in the Beijiang River (BJR) was the highest, while that of Cd (2.04) in the Xijiang River (XJR) was the highest. Unlike that in riparian soils, the maximum accumulation of Pb (0.76) and Cd (3.01) in river sediments both occurred in the BJR. Furthermore, the enrichment factor results also showed that Pb and Cd in the riparian soils and river sediments along the BJR were higher than those in the XJR and Dongjiang River (DJR). The relationship between enrichment factors and nonresidual fractions further proved that the enrichment factors of Cd were significantly correlated with the nonresidual fractions of Cd, which may imply various anthropogenic sources of Cd in the three reaches. Moreover, source identification based on principal component analysis (PCA) and Pb isotope ratio analysis indicated that riparian soils and river sediments have inconsistent pollution source structures. The PCA results showed that Pb and Cd were homologous inputs in the DJR, and there were significant differences only in the riparian soils and river sediments. Pb isotope tracing results further showed that the bedrock of high geological background from upstream may be the main reason for Cd accumulation in the XJR. However, the ultrahigh accumulation of Cd in the BJR is mainly caused by the input of the upstream mining and metallurgy industry. The control of upstream input sources will be the key to the prevention of trace metal pollution in these regions.

Short−Term Assessment of Heavy Metals in Surface Water from Xiaohe River Irrigation Area, China: Levels, Sources and Distribution

The aims of this study were to determine the pollution characteristics of heavy metals and their potential harm to human health in the surface water of agricultural irrigation areas, China, over a short term. In this study, Cu, Zn, Pb, Hg, Ni, Cr, Cd, and As in surface water of the Xiaohe River irrigation area were detected and analyzed. The results showed that the concentrations of Pb, Hg, Ni, Cr, Cd, and As exceeded the national environmental quality standard for surface water in varying degrees. The concentrations of heavy metals in surface water in October were significantly lower than that in November and December due to the impact of extreme precipitation events. Point source pollution (industrial sewage, etc.) was the main factor affecting the spatial distribution of heavy metals. The main source of heavy metals in October was domestic sewage. Domestic sewage and industrial sewage were the main sources of heavy metals in November. The sources of heavy metals in surface water in December were relatively diverse, and industrial sewage was the main source. The temporal variation of heavy metal pollution sources changed significantly. Industrial sewage was the main pollution source of heavy metals in surface water in the study area. The impact of urban domestic sewage and agricultural activities cannot be ignored. The health risk of heavy metals in surface water mainly depends on Cr, Cd, and As. Policy recommendations were also proposed for better control of heavy metal pollution in the surface water of river ecosystems involving agricultural irrigation areas.

Influence of parent material on soil chemical characteristics in a semi-arid tropical region of Northeast Brazil

Soil parental material is one of the main factors that influence pedogenesis. Several studies evaluated the relationship between the parent material and soil chemistry, but few studies have assessed such a relationship in semi-arid tropical regions. This investigation was carried out to assess the effect of different parent materials on the chemical composition and available concentrations of macronutrients and micronutrients, including potentially toxic elements (Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb) in soils in a semi-arid tropical setting. The chemical composition of the soils inherited the geochemical signature of their parent materials. Quartz sandstones, augen gneisses, and peraluminous granites exhibited the lowest reservoirs of plant nutrients and formed sandy, acid, and infertile soils. On the other hand, alkaline soils and soils with high concentrations of nutrients formed on ultramafic rocks (harzburgite), marble, and anorthosite. The pH, clay content, and CEC were the main attributes of the soils governing the availability of macro and micronutrients. The low soil organic carbon contents did not influence the availability of the nutrients. The parent material also influenced the soil texture. Parent materials that are richer in silica formed more sandy soils. The availability of Cd, Cr, and Pb in soils was low; however, the elevated Ni concentrations of soils derived from ultramafic rocks may pose risks to the environment and human health. Cluster and discriminant analyses were used to discriminate the natural fertility of soils. These results are useful for the agro-pedological zoning of the Brazilian semi-arid tropical region and for land use planning.

Financing constraints and firm-level responses to the COVID-19 pandemic: International evidence

We explore whether financing constraints affected the ways in which small and medium-sized enterprises navigated through the economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We draw on data from a novel source, the COVID-19 Impact Follow-up Surveys conducted in 19 countries by the World Bank Enterprise Analysis Unit as a follow-up to enterprise surveys conducted in these countries prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. We find that previous bank-lending credit constraints magnified the effects of the pandemic. More specifically, credit-rationed firms were more likely to experience greater liquidity and cash flow problems and more likely than unconstrained firms to be delinquent in meeting their obligations to financial institutions during the economic crisis. Furthermore, these firms were less likely to have access to bank funding as a principal source of financing to address pandemic-induced cash flow and liquidity problems during the COVID-19 outbreak. We further find that credit-constrained firms were more likely to use trade credit, delay payments to suppliers or employees, and rely on government grants to cope with pandemic-related liquidity and cash flow problems. We find little evidence that credit-rationed firms were more likely to raise equity capital during this economic crisis. Finally, we find that financing constraints were more likely to hamper firms' ability to adjust business operations in response to exogenous shocks. This study contributes to the literature on the impact of credit constraints on firm behavior in times of crisis.

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in farmland soils in Beijing by three improved risk assessment methods

Beijing, as the capital of China, still has soil pollution problems that cannot be ignored. However, there are few studies on the overall ecological risks of heavy metals in farmland soils in Beijing. This study selected 432 soils and crops heavy metal content data of eight districts in Beijing from academic papers and academic journal papers. In this study, the improved Hakanson method, improved analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and integrated quality impact index (IICQ) comprehensively were used to evaluate the impact of Pb, As, and Cd pollution on the farmland soil environment, and the applicable conditions of these methods were discussed. The results by improved Hakanson method showed that both Pb and As were at the normal ecological risk level, while Cd was the largest contributor to potential ecological risk which accounted for 72.54% of the total risk and is mainly at a moderate ecological risk level. The analysis by improved AHP showed that the average comprehensive index of soil heavy metal pollution in the study area was 0.2317, which was at a light pollution level. The IICQ of soil and agricultural products were between 0 and 1 demonstrating that the soil was clean. In summary, the pollution of heavy metals Pb, As, and Cd in the study area is at a relatively low level, and there is no significant risk to the surrounding environment and human health. IICQ method is suitable for the evaluation of soil heavy metal composition and individual impact and can be more accurately used for the overall ecological evaluation of soil-crop-human health system.

Possible application of stable isotope compositions for the identification of metal sources in soil

Metals in soil are potentially harmful to humans and ecosystems. Stable isotope measurement may provide "fingerprint" information on the sources of metals. In light of the rapid progress in this emerging field, we present a state-of-the-art overview of how useful stable isotopes are in soil metal source identification. Distinct isotope signals in different sources are the key prerequisites for source apportionment. In this context, Zn and Cd isotopes are particularly helpful for the identification of combustion-related industrial sources, since high-temperature evaporation-condensation would largely fractionate the isotopes of both elements. The mass-independent fractionation of Hg isotopes during photochemical reactions allows for the identification of atmospheric sources. However, compared with traditionally used Sr and Pb isotopes for source tracking whose variations are due to the radiogenic processes, the biogeochemical low-temperature fractionation of Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg and Tl isotopes renders much uncertainty, since large intra-source variations may overlap the distinct signatures of inter-source variations (i.e., blur the source signals). Stable isotope signatures of non-metallic elements can also aid in source identification in an indirect way. In fact, the soils are often contaminated with different elements. In this case, a combination of stable isotope analysis with mineralogical or statistical approaches would provide more accurate results. Furthermore, isotope-based source identification will also be helpful for comprehending the temporal changes of metal accumulation in soil systems.

A meta-analysis of heavy metals pollution in farmland and urban soils in China over the past 20 years

A total of 713 research papers about field monitor experiments of heavy metals in farmland and urban soils in China, published from 2000 to 2019, were obtained. A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the level of China's heavy metal pollution in soils, mainly focusing on eight heavy metals. It was found that the average concentrations of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and arsenic (As) in China were 0.19, 30.74, 85.86, 25.81, 0.074, 67.37, 27.77 and 8.89 mg/kg, respectively. Compared with the background value (0.097 mg/kg), the Cd content showed a twofold (0.19 mg/kg) rise in farmland soils and a threefold (0.29 mg/kg) rise in urban soils. The decreasing order of the mean I_geo was Cd (1.77) > Pb (0.62) > Zn (0.60) > Cu (0.58) > Hg (0.57) > Cr (0.54) > Ni (0.47) > As (0.28). Nearly 33.54% and 44.65% of sites in farmland and urban soils were polluted with Cd. The average concentrations of eight heavy metals were not sensitive change in recent two decades in farmland and urban soils. The average P_n values for urban (2.52) and farmland (2.15) soils showed that heavy metal pollution in urban soils was more serious than that in farmland, and the middle Yangtze River regions, where industrial activity dominates, were the most polluted. The meta-analysis comprehensively evaluated the current pollution situation of soil heavy metal, and provided important basis for soil management and environment prevention in China.

Comparative Study on Soil Microbial Diversity and Structure Under Wastewater and Groundwater Irrigation Conditions

Wastewater (WW) irrigation to agricultural soils is one of the most economical and effective water-saving strategies. The effects of WW irrigation on soil microbial communities have gained increasing focus as these effects are not well understood. In this study, the effects of WW and groundwater (GW) irrigation on microbial diversity and structure were compared using the high-throughput sequencing analysis of 16S rDNA amplicons. Soil samples irrigated by WW for several decades and maize soil (loamy) samples irrigated by GW were collected from Luancheng Town, Shijiazhuang City, China. Compared to the GW groups, WW groups exhibited non-significant soil bacterial community abundance at the 0-20 and 20-40 cm depths. WW irrigation significantly altered the bacterial community composition and structures compared to GW irrigation. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Firmicutes increased in WW irrigated soil, while Actinobacteria decreased. Moreover, 14 significantly abundant biomarkers from Proteobacteria and Firmicutes that corresponded with WW irrigation were identified. Additionally, WW irrigation enriched some KEGG pathways that corresponded with metabolism and human diseases. The physical and chemical properties of WW irrigated soil may shape the compositions and structures of soil bacterial communities. The findings of this study illuminated the effects of wastewater irrigation on microbial characteristics, which is important for estimating the effects of long-term wastewater irrigation on soil environmental health.

Concentrations, Spatial Distributions, and Sources of Heavy Metals in Surface Soils of the Coal Mining City Wuhai, China

Various studies have shown that soils surrounding mining areas are seriously polluted by heavy metals. In this study, 58 topsoil samples were systematically collected throughout the coal mining city Wuhai, located within the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. The concentrations of As, Hg, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in these samples were measured and statistically analyzed. The mean concentrations of all heavy metals were lower than their Grade I values defined by the Chinese Soil Quality Standard. However, the mean concentrations of individual heavy metals in many samples exceeded their background values. The spatial distribution of heavy metals was analyzed by the ordinary kriging interpolation method. The positive matrix factorization model was used to ascertain contamination sources of the eight heavy metals and to apportion the contribution of each source. The most severely polluted area was the Wuhushan mine site in the Wuda district of Wuhai. Our results showed that coal mining strongly affected heavy metal contamination of the local soils. Results of source apportionment indicated that contributions from industrial activities, atmospheric deposition, agricultural activities, and natural sources were 31.3%, 26.3%, 21.9%, and 20.5%, respectively. This clearly demonstrates that anthropogenic activities have markedly higher contribution rates than natural sources to heavy metal pollution in soils in this area.

Mul-tiomics analysis of cadmium stress on the ovarian function of the wolf spider Pardosa pseudoannulata

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is widespread in paddy filed soil in China. In this study, the toxicity of Cd with regard to the female reproductive system of paddy spider Pardosa pseudoannulata was investigated by means of multi-omics analyses (transcriptome, proteome, and miRNAs). Decreased activities of detoxifying enzymes including peroxidase (POD), Glutathione S-transferases (GST), and superoxide dismutase were detected in the ovary of P. pseudoannulata. Of these, GST and POD were consistently down-regulated at the transcriptional and translational levels. Vitellogenin content and fecundity of the spider were also reduced by Cd burden. Five vitellogenin encodes genes were down-regulated while only vitellogenin-6 protein was up-regulated. But protein lipovitellin-1, the main composition of vitellin, was down-regulated. In addition, the correlation between the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway and Cd stress was identified. A down-regulated gene that encoding connector of kinase to AP-1 in the MAPK signaling pathway was regulated by the up-regulated miRNA (miRNA id: miRNA dan-miR- 318>der-miR-318>dgr-miR-318>dme-miR-318-3p > dmo-miR-318>dpe-miR-318>dps-miR-318>dse-miR-318>dsi-miR-318>dvi-miR-318>dwi-miR-318>dya-miR-318). In conclusion, Cd stress possesses distinct female reproductive toxicity on P. pseudoannulata through impairing antioxidant system and synthesis of vitellin.

The Spatial Distribution, Contamination Status and Contributing Factors of Heavy Metals in Cropland Soils of Twelve Cities in Shandong Province, China

The aims of this study were to analyze the spatial distributions of, contamination statuses of, and factors contributing to, heavy metals in cropland areas of different cities; thus, 55 agricultural soils were collected from 12 cities of Shandong Province, China. Concentrations of copper (Cu), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) were determined. Results showed that average contents of Cu, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni and Zn were 24.13, 31.77, 0.16, 130.63, 22.13, and 71.19 mg·kg−1, respectively, and Pb and Cd had similar spatial distributions in those cities. Specifically, contents of Cr in cities of Weifang, Weihai, Yantai and Zibo were significantly higher than it in other cities; Weihai and Zibo also had significantly high contents of Zn. Moreover, concentrations of Cr in brown soils and cinnamon soils were significantly higher than that in fluvo-aquic soils, while other metals showed no significant differences among the soil types. Furthermore, Cu, Pb and Zn showed significant concentration decreases with respect to those measured in 2007. The correlation analysis and factor analysis indicated that the contamination of Pb and Cd was mainly caused by economic activities. In addition, the significantly correlated Cu/Ni/Zn and Pb/Cd indicated the inputs from different human activities, while Cr was prone to multiple sources. This study demonstrated that more attention should be given to the contamination by Cr, Pb and Cd, and that the management of human economic activities is vitally imperative for safety of surrounding cropland soils.

Is a Regional Coordination Approach to Air Pollution Management Helpful? Evidence from China

In February 2017 China began to require the regional coordination of four ministries and 28 cities surrounding Beijing to manage air pollution. The Coordination attempts to unify air pollution standards and implements various new methods to monitor air pollution. Leveraging the natural experiment and using a difference-in-differences research design, we note that firms located in the treatment cities invest more in the environment than those in the control cities. In addition, we find that non-state-owned firms (non-SOEs) respond more strongly than SOEs. The findings remain qualitatively the same after accounting for selection bias in the cities included in the Coordination. Most importantly, air quality improves for treatment cities after the implementation of the Coordination. Our findings offer lessons to other emerging markets for implementing their air pollution management programs. Specifically, we sharpen our knowledge of the administrative management needed to improve coordination among government agencies and local officials in the management of air pollution and suggest that the government can play an active role in enhancing air pollution management.
