Abstract
(1) Background: This study aims to highlight differences in the etiology and fitting of low vision aids in visually impaired children and adolescents in comparison to adults. (2) Methods: A retrospective data collection from visually impaired patients presenting to obtain assistive devices from 1 January 2016 to 30 April 2020 was conducted. A total of 502 patients were included. Inclusion criteria were a minimum age of 4 years and the chart notation of a best-corrected distance visual acuity in the patient record prior to the fitting of magnifying visual aids. (3) Results: Of the 502 patients, 147 (29.3%) were children under the age of 18 years. The most common cause of visual impairment in children was albinism, and in adults, it was age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Children showed better distance visual acuity, with a median of 0.88 logMAR (Logarithm of the Minimum Angle of Resolution) compared to 1.0 in adults (p = 0.001). Near visual acuity was also significantly better, with a median of 0.54 logMAR in children compared to 0.9 in adults (p < 0.001). Near and distance visual acuity were significantly improved by fitting magnifying visual aids (p < 0.001). After fitting, near visual acuity averaged 0.3 logMAR, and distance visual acuity, 0.7. The most commonly prescribed aids were optical vision aids, which 68.5% of the patients received; 43.8% received electronic aids. In children, optical aids were more frequently prescribed, and in adults, electronic and acoustic aids (p < 0.001). (4) Conclusion: Visually impaired patients can regain the ability to read and improve distance vision by using individually adapted and tested magnifying vision aids, often with optical aids alone. Differences between children and adults could be discovered in the etiology and severity of visual impairment, as well as in the provision type of low vision aids.

Abstract
Purpose Albinism is a group of genetic disorders that includes several conditions related to a defect in melanin production. There is a broad phenotypic and genotypic variability between the different forms. The aim of this study was to assess the ophthalmologic characteristics according to patients' genotypes in a cohort followed in the Reference Center for oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) of Bordeaux University Hospital, France. Methods A retrospective observational study was conducted in a cohort of patients with OCA seen in consultation in the ophthalmology department between 2017 and 2021 in whom a genetic analysis was performed. Results In total, 127 patients with OCA were included in this study and matched with the results of the genetic analysis. In the population aged over 6 years, there was no statistical difference in binocular visual acuity between the OCA1, OCA2, and OCA4 forms (P = 0.27). There was difference in ametropia between the three forms (P = 0.003). A two-by-two comparison using the Bonferroni correction showed a significant difference in ametropia between the OCA2 and OCA4 forms (P = 0.007) and between the OCA1 and OCA2 forms (P = 0.0075). Regardless of the form, most patients (75.4%) had grade 4 foveal hypoplasia. There was no association between the grade of foveal hypoplasia and the gene involved (P = 0.87). Conclusions We described a genotype-phenotype correlation for the three most represented forms of albinism in our cohort. This study allowed assessing the degree of visual deficiency in young children with OCA.

Abstract
Albinism is a worldwide genetic disorder caused by mutations in at least 20 genes, identified to date, that affect melanin production or transport in the skin, hair and eyes. Patients present with variable degrees of diffuse muco-cutaneous and adnexal hypopigmentation, as well as ocular features including nystagmus, misrouting of optic nerves and foveal hypoplasia. Less often, albinism is associated with blood, immunological, pulmonary, digestive and/or neurological anomalies. Clinical and molecular characterizations are essential in preventing potential complications. Disease-causing mutations remain unknown for about 25% of patients with albinism. These guidelines have been developed for the diagnosis and management of syndromic and non-syndromic forms of albinism, based on a systematic review of the scientific literature. These guidelines comprise clinical and molecular characterization, diagnosis, therapeutic approach and management.

Abstract
RATIONALE Angelman syndrome (AS) is an uncommon genetic disease characterized as serious retarded mental development and ocular abnormality. PATIENT CONCERNS This report aims to present the ophthalmological features, and identify the diagnosis and outcomes of strabismus surgery in AS patients. DIAGNOSIS Three children with exotropia were diagnosed with AS based on their typical clinical features. INTERVENTIONS All patients underwent multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) analysis and accepted lateral rectus recession surgery with the assistance of intravenous combined inhalation anesthesia. OUTCOMES The maternal heritage deletion of chromosome 15q11.2-q13 was verified in all patients by MLPA. All patients with strabismus could not cooperate during the vision test, and had astigmatism. The strabismus type of AS patients was horizontal exotropia, and no vertical strabismus was found. One of these patients was combined with high myopia. The hypopigmentation on the hair and iris was ubiquitous. However, retina pigmentation was normal. After different degrees of lateral rectus recession, the exotropia was significantly relieved, and the surgical effects were stable postoperatively. LESSONS Horizontal exotropia is the major strabismus type. Severe intellectual disability, hyperactivity, and speech impairment are the common characteristics of AS children. Its examination and operation design remains challenging. Thus, repeated examinations and intelligence rehabilitation are essential.

Abstract
Albinism can be divided into oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) and ocular albinism (OA). In the differential diagnostics these can be distinguished from rarer syndromes with partial albinism, which are frequently associated with susceptibility to infections and neurological symptoms. The OCA is an autosomal recessive inherited disease of melanin biosynthesis, which leads to complete or partial loss of melanin in the skin, hair follicles and eyes. Of the seven currently known subtypes (OCA 1-7), four are well-characterized (OCA 1-4). These are based on gene mutations, which code for tyrosinase, a key enzyme in melanin synthesis and for further proteins. These play an important role in the catalytic activity of tyrosinase and the structure and function of melanosomes. In the presence of these subtypes, the clinical symptoms and the course of the disease show a pronounced variability, especially in the type and extent of pigmentation of the skin and hair as well as the severity of eye involvement, which makes the phenotypic classification difficult. Treatment priorities are a consistent protection from UV light for prophylaxis against skin cancer and regular preventive investigations. The ocular alterations typical for albinism necessitate timely diagnostics and care by institutions specialized in ophthalmology. Novel strategies for systemic treatment of subtypes of albinism are in preclinical testing. The OA without skin involvement shows X‑linked inheritance, is much rarer and is characterized by reduced pigmentation of the retina and iris, nystagmus and macular hypoplasia, sometimes with substantial loss of visual acuity. The typical ocular symptoms of OA can be manifested to a varying extent in all forms of OCA.

Abstract
PURPOSE A hallmark of albinism is foveal hypoplasia. However, literature suggests variable foveal development. This study evaluates the association between ocular phenotype and foveal morphology to demonstrate the broad structural and functional spectrum. METHODS Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), nystagmus, angle kappa, stereoacuity, iris transillumination, macular melanin presence, foveal avascular zone, and annular reflex were recorded in 14 patients with albinism. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography provided macular images. RESULTS The clinical phenotype was broad, with BCVA varying from 20/20 to 20/100. Better BCVA was associated with a preserved foveal avascular zone, annular macular reflex, stereoacuity, and macular melanin. Imaging demonstrated a continuum of foveal development correlating with BCVA. Individuals with a rudimentary pit had normal inner and outer segment lengthening and better BCVA. CONCLUSIONS The spectrum of ocular structure and visual function in albinism is broad, suggesting a possible diagnosis of albinism in a patient with an even more normal clinical presentation.

Abstract
The purpose of this report is to summarize an understanding of the ocular motor system in patients with albinism. Other than the association of vertical eccentric gaze null positions and asymmetric, (a) periodic alternating nystagmus in a large percentage of patients, the ocular motor system in human albinism does not contain unique pathology, rather has "typical" types of infantile ocular oscillations and binocular disorders. Both the ocular motor and afferent visual system are affected to varying degrees in patients with albinism, thus, combined treatment of both systems will maximize visual function.

Abstract
This article describes the clinical presentation of the most common congenital optic disc findings: optic nerve hypoplasia, optic disc cupping and pediatric optic atrophy. Particular emphasis is placed on the often difficult question: is it a physiological variant or is it pathological? Do I need further investigations? Pragmatic clinical hints are given to enable ophthalmologists to recognize normal variants with greater certainty but also not to overlook congenital optic nerve pathologies. Congenital anomalies of the optic nerve (head) are more common than half a century ago. They can affect the visual development and thus the general infantile development to a large extent if presenting bilaterally. They can occur isolated, with other ocular pathologies and/or accompanied by systemic diseases or syndromes, such as septo-optic dysplasia, albinism, prematurity, small for gestational age birth, as well as due to toxic exposure during pregnancy (e.g. drugs, alcohol and maternal diabetes). In addition to clinical illustrations to distinguish between physiological variants and pathologies of the optic nerve head, the different diagnostic and therapeutic options depending on the age of presentation of the infant are outlined. The reader will obtain some guidelines for distinguishing congenital and acquired optic nerve pathologies. The focal point of the present paper is with infants aged 0-2 years where many diagnostic imaging and psychophysical techniques cannot be applied. Therefore, this age group is the most difficult to correctly discriminate between physiological and pathological findings and to decide whether further diagnostic and/or treatment steps are necessary.

Abstract
PURPOSE To provide detailed information about opthalmological findings in a group of patients with Angelman syndrome (AS). METHODS Consecutive patients with a genetically confirmed diagnosis of AS were submitted to ophthalmic and orthoptic examinations. Strabismus, visual acuity, cycloplegic refraction, and iris and fundus pigmentation were evaluated. Parents were also examined to compare the extent of fundus pigmentation. RESULTS A total of 34 patients were identified, representing 3 genetic classes: deletion, uniparental disomy, and mutation. Ametropia >1 D was present in 97% of cases: myopia in 9%, hyperopia in 76%, and astigmatism in 94%. Myopia and anisometropia were found only in the genetic deletion group. Strabismus, most frequently exotropia, was found in 24 patients (75%). Ocular hypopigmentation was observed in 18 subjects (53%), with choroidal involvement in 3 cases and isolated iris involvement in 4. Hypopigmentation was observed in all of the 3 genetic classes. CONCLUSIONS Ophthalmic alterations in AS were observed more frequently than has been previously reported, except for ocular hypopigmentation, which was observed less frequently.

Abstract
The foveal region contains the highest cell density in the human retina; consequently a disproportionately large area of the visual cortex is dedicated to its representation. In aniridia and albinism the fovea does not develop, and the corresponding cortical representation shows a reduction in gray matter volume. In albinos there are chiasmatic irregularities in the hemispheric projections, which are not found in aniridics. Here, we ask whether the anomalies in central retinal development, present in albinism and aniridia, have a wider impact on the architecture of the visual cortex. The length, depth, and topology of the calcarine fissure is analyzed in albino, aniridic, and normal subjects. These measures are compared between groups and between the cortical hemispheres within each subject. We show that the calcarine fissure, where the primary visual cortex is represented, is abnormally short in those lacking a fovea. Moreover, surface reconstructions of the calcarine fissure revealed marked interhemispheric asymmetries. The two groups could not be distinguished on the basis of their cortical features, and we therefore interpret the abnormalities in cortical architecture in terms of the absence of the fovea, the common retinal feature found in both groups.
