Abstract
BACKGROUND Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a systemic disease more than a disease localized to the eye, and there may be vascular involvement in its pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) of patients with CSC, to compare it with that of healthy individuals, and to explore whether there might be an association between CSC and subclinical carotid atherosclerotic disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Adult patients with CSC (n = 30) and healthy individuals (n = 30) were included in this prospective study. All participants underwent complete ophthalmologic imaging and were then referred to the radiology department. Carotid IMT measurements were performed using ultrasound imaging. Measurements of the two groups were obtained and compared. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between patients with CSC and the control group with respect to age, gender, and smoking habits. The mean (±standard deviation, SD) carotid IMT values obtained by ultrasound measurements for the right and left sides in the patient group were 0.71 mm (± 0.19) and 0.71 mm (± 0.21), respectively. The mean (±SD) carotid IMT values for the right and left sides in the control group were 0.61 mm (± 0.15) and 0.60 mm (± 0.15), respectively. The mean carotid IMT values in the patient group were significantly higher than those in the control group for the right and left sides (p = 0.02 and p = 0.03, respectively). CONCLUSION Carotid IMT is increased in patients with CSC compared to healthy individuals. This outcome might reinforce the benefit of carotid artery screening following diagnosis of CSC by ophthalmologists for early detection of subclinical carotid atherosclerotic disease.

Abstract
Cerebral microhemorrhages (CMHs, also known as cerebral microbleeds) are a critical but frequently underestimated aspect of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), bearing substantial clinical consequences. Detectable through sensitive neuroimaging techniques, CMHs reveal an extensive pathological landscape. They are prevalent in the aging population, with multiple CMHs often being observed in a given individual. CMHs are closely associated with accelerated cognitive decline and are increasingly recognized as key contributors to the pathogenesis of vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). This review paper delves into the hypothesis that atherosclerosis, a prevalent age-related large vessel disease, extends its pathological influence into the cerebral microcirculation, thereby contributing to the development and progression of CSVD, with a specific focus on CMHs. We explore the concept of vascular aging as a continuum, bridging macrovascular pathologies like atherosclerosis with microvascular abnormalities characteristic of CSVD. We posit that the same risk factors precipitating accelerated aging in large vessels (i.e., atherogenesis), primarily through oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways, similarly instigate accelerated microvascular aging. Accelerated microvascular aging leads to increased microvascular fragility, which in turn predisposes to the formation of CMHs. The presence of hypertension and amyloid pathology further intensifies this process. We comprehensively overview the current body of evidence supporting this interconnected vascular hypothesis. Our review includes an examination of epidemiological data, which provides insights into the prevalence and impact of CMHs in the context of atherosclerosis and CSVD. Furthermore, we explore the shared mechanisms between large vessel aging, atherogenesis, microvascular aging, and CSVD, particularly focusing on how these intertwined processes contribute to the genesis of CMHs. By highlighting the role of vascular aging in the pathophysiology of CMHs, this review seeks to enhance the understanding of CSVD and its links to systemic vascular disorders. Our aim is to provide insights that could inform future therapeutic approaches and research directions in the realm of neurovascular health.

Abstract
Hyperlipidemia has many ocular manifestations, the most prevalent being retinal vascular occlusion. Hyperlipidemic lesions and occlusions to the vessels supplying the retina result in permanent blindness, necessitating prompt detection and treatment. Retinal vascular occlusion is diagnosed using different imaging modalities, including optical coherence tomography angiography. These diagnostic techniques obtain images representing the blood flow through the retinal vessels, providing an opportunity for AI to utilize image recognition to detect blockages and abnormalities before patients present with symptoms. AI is already being used as a non-invasive method to detect retinal vascular occlusions and other vascular pathology, as well as predict treatment outcomes. As providers see an increase in patients presenting with new retinal vascular occlusions, the use of AI to detect and treat these conditions has the potential to improve patient outcomes and reduce the financial burden on the healthcare system. This article comprehends the implications of AI in the current management strategies of retinal vascular occlusion (RVO) in hyperlipidemia and the recent developments of AI technology in the management of ocular diseases.

Abstract
The purpose is to clarify the relationship between patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO), maximal intima-media complex thickness (Max IMT), and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), which is useful in assessing atherosclerosis. This was a retrospective observation, single center study. The patients were 86 RVO patients (male: female = 43:43, mean age 63.3 years), 25 with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and 61 with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), classified as ≧50 years old and <50 years old, Max IMT≧1.1 and less, NT-pro BNP≧55 and less. Results showed that Max IMT ≧1.1 was significantly more common in both the CRVO and BRVO groups at ≧50 years, and NT-pro BNP ≧55 was significantly more common in the CRVO group. Max IMT≧1.1 was seen in 80% of the BRVO group and in 85% of patients aged ≧50 years. Sixty-eight percent of patients in the CRVO group had Max IMT≧1.1, but none of those < 50 years had Max IMT≧1.1. Forty-eight percent of RVO patients had NT-pro BNP≧55, and significantly more patients had Max IMT≧1.1 than those who did not have NT-pro BNP more than 55 (p = 0.02). Multiple regression analysis with Max IMT as the dependent variable showed that age and NT-pro BNP were significantly associated with RVO (p = 0.015, 0.022). RVO patients were more likely to have a Max IMT≧1.1, which was associated with atherosclerosis. Max IMT and NT-pro BNP were also associated with RVO patients, so NT-pro BNP may be a marker of RVO.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Vascular stiffening is highly predictive of major adverse cardiovascular events. It is not clear whether microangiopathy, such as fundus arteriosclerosis, is related to carotid atherosclerosis. Hence, this study was designed to investigate the relationship between carotid atherosclerosis and fundus arteriosclerosis among individuals of different sexes in the Chinese health-examination population. METHODS This retrospective cross-sectional study involved 20,836 participants, including 13050 males and 7786 females. All participants underwent a detailed health examination, including medical history assessment, physical examination, assessment of lifestyle factors, fundus photography, Doppler ultrasound examination of the neck, and laboratory examinations. Two trained ophthalmologists analysed fundus arteriosclerosis based on fundus photographs, while carotid atherosclerosis was diagnosed using colour Doppler sonography of the neck. Binary logistic regression was used to analyse the relationship between carotid atherosclerosis and fundus arteriosclerosis. RESULTS In participants with fundus arteriosclerosis, the incidence of carotid atherosclerosis was higher than that of participants without fundus arteriosclerosis (52.94% vs. 47.06%). After adjustments for potential confounding factors, fundus arteriosclerosis was significantly associated with the risk of carotid atherosclerosis. The OR with 95% CI for fundus arteriosclerosis was 1.17 (1.02, 1.34) with p = 0.0262, and individuals who did not have fundus arteriosclerosis were used as a reference in the total population. Fundus arteriosclerosis was associated with the incidence of carotid atherosclerosis in males (p = 0.0005) but not in females (p = 0.0746). CONCLUSIONS Fundus arteriosclerosis was closely associated with carotid atherosclerosis in the Chinese population. This association was found in males but not in females.

Abstract
Objectives: The main aim was to investigate the association between retinal microvascular metrics using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and carotid artery stenosis (CAS) in an aging Chinese cohort.Methods: In this cross-sectional and observational study, 138 eyes of 138 participants were examined. Indices of the microcirculation measured by OCTA included mean vessel density (VD), skeleton density (SD), vessel diameter index (VDI), fractal dimension (FD) and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) of the superficial retinal layer (SRL) and deep retinal layer (DRL), and peripapillary vessel caliber. The correlation of these indices with the carotid atherosclerotic lesions including carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) and common carotid artery (CCA) plaque was assessed.Results: A total of 72 of 138 eyes demonstrated an increased (≥1 mm) CIMT, and 32 of the eyes presented common carotid plaques. Macular VD, SD, and FD were decreased with the increasing CCA caliber diameter (p < 0.05, respectively). Superficial and deep macular FDs were negatively associated with CIMT as well as the existence of CCA plaques (p < 0.05, respectively).Conclusion: Changes in retinal microvasculature accessed by OCTA may be used as one of the non-invasive early indicators to monitor asymptomatic CAS.

Abstract
Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is an emergency state characterized by sudden, painless vision impairment. Patients with CRAO have an increased risk of cardiovascular events, including stroke, likely related to vascular endothelial damage. Therefore, we investigated flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery as a marker of endothelial dysfunction, intima-media complex thickness (IMT) of the common carotid artery, pointing to the arterial wall atherosclerotic alteration, and transthoracic echocardiographic parameters in 126 consecutive CRAO patients (66 men [52.4%], median age 55 years) and 107 control participants (56 men [52.3%], matched by age, sex, and body mass index). Most CRAO patients (n = 104, 82.5%) had at least one internal medicine comorbidity, mainly hypercholesterolemia and hypertension, which coexisted in one-fourth of them. Furthermore, they had a 38.2% lower relative increase of FMD (FMD%) and a 23.1% thicker IMT compared to the controls (p < 0.001, both, also after adjustment for potential confounders). On echocardiography, the CRAO group was characterized by increased dimensions of the left atrium and thicker left ventricular walls, together with impaired left ventricular diastolic function. CRAO is related to vascular endothelial damage, atherosclerosis, and left ventricular diastolic cardiac dysfunction. Thus, non-invasive ultrasound assessments, such as FMD%, IMT, and echocardiography, may be helpful in screening patients with increased CRAO risk, particularly those with other comorbidities.

Abstract
AIM To determine whether macrovascular disease assessed by carotid ultrasonography and arterial stiffness by pulse wave velocity are independently associated with diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes. METHODS A random subgroup of surviving participants with type 2 diabetes from the Fremantle Diabetes Study Phase II were invited to take part in this sub-study in 2018-2019. In addition to standardized questionnaires, a physical examination and fasting biochemical tests, each underwent dilated colour fundus photography, carotid arterial ultrasonography with measurement of the intima-media thickness (IMT) and quantification of the degree of stenosis, and pulse wave analysis calculation of the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV). The cross-sectional association between arterial disease parameters and diabetic retinopathy was assessed using generalized estimating equation models which enabled both eyes to be included in the analysis. RESULTS Some 270 participants [mean ± sd age 72 ± 9 years, 153 (57%) men and median (IQR) diabetes duration 15 (11-22) years] were included in analysis. Of 524 assessable eyes, 82 (16%) had diabetic retinopathy. In multivariable analysis, significant independent associates of diabetic retinopathy were age at diabetes diagnosis (inversely), HbA1c , insulin treatment and urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (all P ≤ 0.022), as well as cfPWV [odds ratio (OR) 1.13, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03, 1.23 per 1 m/s increase; P = 0.008] and common carotid artery (CCA) IMT ≥1 mm (OR 2.95, 95% CI 1.21, 7.23; P = 0.018). CONCLUSIONS The association between diabetic retinopathy and CCA IMT suggests that carotid disease may share cardiovascular risk factors with diabetic retinopathy. The association between diabetic retinopathy and cfPWV may reflect the consequences of altered intravascular haemodynamics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The papillomacular bundle (PMB) area is an important anatomical site associated with central vision. As preventive medicine and health screening examinations are now becoming commonplace, the incidental detection of papillomacular bundle defect (PMBD) on fundus photography has been increasing. However, clinical significance of incidental PMBD has not been well documented to date. Thus, through long-term and longitudinal observation, we aimed to investigate the risk factors for the development and progression of PMBD and its predictive role associated with systemic diseases and glaucoma. METHODS This longitudinal study included subjects who had undergone standardized health screening. We retrospectively reviewed patients for whom PMBD had been detected in fundus photography and followed up for more than 5 years. For a comparative analysis, non-PMBD groups of age- and gender-matched healthy controls were selected. RESULTS A total of about 67,000 fundus photographs were analyzed for 8.0 years, and 587 PMBD eyes were found. Among them, 234 eyes of 234 patients who had had fundus photographs taken for more than 5 years were finally included. A total of 216 eyes (92.3%) did not progress during the 8.1 ± 2.7 years, whereas 18 eyes (7.7%) showed progression at 7.6 ± 2.9 years after initial detection. A multivariate logistic regression analysis using 224 non-PMBD healthy controls revealed low body mass index (BMI < 20 kg/m2), systemic hypertension, and sclerotic changes of retinal artery as the significant risk factors for the development of PMBD. Regarding PMBD progression, low BMI, concomitant retinal nerve fiber layer defect (RNFLD) at non-PMB sites, optic disc hemorrhage, and higher vertical cup/disc ratio were individual significant risk factors. CONCLUSION PMBD is associated with ischemic effects. Although the majority of PMBD do not progress, some of cases are associated with glaucomatous damage in a long-term way. PMBD might be a personalized indicator representing ischemia-associated diseases and a predictive factor for diagnosis and preventive management of glaucoma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To use optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to determine whether retinal microvascular parameters are associated with carotid arterial disease in people with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Participants (community-based) underwent detailed assessments including carotid ultrasonography and OCTA. Ultrasound images were assessed for mean intima-media thickness (IMT) and the presence of stenosis. OCTA image analysis provided measures of vessel density, foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, blood flow areas, and retinal thickness. For each OCTA variable, the most parsimonious model was generated using generalized estimating equations, then ipsilateral and contralateral carotid disease-related variables were added to determine their significance. RESULTS A total of 474 eyes from 261 participants (mean ± SD age 72.0 ± 9.3 years, 57.1% males, median diabetes duration 15.4 years [interquartile range 11.1-22.4]) were analyzed. When carotid variables were added to the most parsimonious models, the ipsilateral natural logarithm of common carotid artery IMT (coefficient -2.56 [95% CI -4.76, -0.35], P = 0.023) and presence of any ipsilateral stenosis (-0.82 [-1.48, -0.17], P = 0.014) were statistically significantly associated with a lower parafoveal density in the deep capillary plexus. A mean bifurcation IMT ≥1 mm was associated with a decreased vessel density in the 300-μm ring surrounding the FAZ (coefficient -0.79 [-1.50, -0.08], P = 0.030)). Contralateral carotid disease-related variables were also significantly associated with retinal microvascular parameters. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to show that carotid disease is an independent associate of retinal microvascular disease assessed by OCTA in type 2 diabetes. Appropriately intensive management of carotid disease may improve the retinal microcirculation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to explore the relationship of hypertensive retinopathy with carotid intima--media thickness (CIMT), and to examine the possible effect modifiers in Chinese adults with hypertension. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study of 12 342 hypertensive patients with complete exit site visit data from the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial. CIMT was measured by carotid ultrasonography. Hypertensive retinopathy was diagnosed according to the Keith--Wagener--Barker classification. RESULTS The mean (SD) CIMT among study participants was 739.9 (111.4) μm. Compared with patients with grade 1 hypertensive retinopathy or without hypertensive retinopathy, a significantly higher CIMT level (β, 7.63, 95% CI: 2.54--12.73) was observed in patients with grade 2-4 hypertensive retinopathy. Moreover, the association between hypertensive retinopathy (grade 2-4 versus grade 1 or normal) and CIMT was stronger in participants of younger age (<60 years; β, 13.70, 95% CI: 5.65--21.75; versus ≥60 years; β, 1.03, 95% CI: -5.58 to 7.63; P interaction = 0.006); or with lower total homocysteine levels [<12.1 μmol/l (median); β, 12.70, 95% CI: 5.98--19.42; versus ≥12.1 μmol/l; β, 2.07, 95% CI: -5.63 to 9.78; P interaction = 0.030). None of the other variables, including sex, BMI, study centers, treatment group, SBP, triglycerides, total cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, folate, serum creatinine, current smoking and alcohol drinking, significantly modified the relation of hypertensive retinopathy with CIMT levels. CONCLUSION Hypertensive retinopathy (grade 2 and higher) was significantly associated with increased CIMT in hypertensive patients. The association was stronger in those of younger age or with lower total homocysteine levels.

Abstract
There is a globally increasing prevalence and incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM). Prolonged hyperglycaemia could lead to both macrovascular damage, such as carotid artery atherosclerosis, and microvascular damage, such as retinal arteriolar narrowing, and might contribute to retinal artery occlusion (RAO). Accordingly, it is important to determine whether DM is a contrubuting factor of RAO. We conducted a retrospective cohort study that included 241,196 DM patients from the Longitudinal Cohort of Diabetes Patients Database who were recruited between 2003 and 2005. An age- and sex-matched non-DM control group included the same number of patients who were selected from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database of 2000. Relevant data of each patient were collected from the index date until December 2013. The incidence and risk of RAO were calculated and compared between the DM and non-DM groups. The hazard ratio for RAO was calculated using Cox proportional hazards regression analysis after adjusting for confounders. The cumulative incidence rate of RAO was calculated by Kaplan-Meier analysis. In total, 317 patients with DM and 144 controls developed RAO during the follow-up period, leading to an incidence rate of RAO in DM patients that was 2.30 times (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.89-2.80) greater than that in controls. After adjustment for potential confounders, patients with DM were 2.11 times (95% CI, 1.71-2.59) more likely to develop RAO in the total study cohort. In conclusion, DM increases the risk of RAO, which is an interdisciplinary emergency. Close collaboration between endocrinologists and ophthalmologists is important in managing RAO following DM.

Abstract
There is globally increasing prevalence and incidence in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). These patients are frequently reported to have retinal abnormalities and both diseases share some systemic risk factors. Hence, it is clinically relevant to determine whether ESRD is a predictor of retinal artery occlusion (RAO).To investigate the risk of RAO in ESRD patients.A retrospective, nationwide, matched cohort study. The study included 93,766 ESRD patients recruited between 2000 and 2009 from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. The same number control group included age- and sex-matched patients without ESRD selected from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, 2000. Data for each patient were collected from the index date until December 2011.The incidence and risk of RAO were compared between the 2 groups. The hazard ratio (HR) for RAO after adjustment for potential confounders was calculated using Cox proportional hazards regression. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to calculate the cumulative RAO incidence rate.In total, 237 ESRD patients and 73 controls exhibited RAO during follow-up; thus, the RAO incidence rate in ESRD patients was 4.49 times (95% confidence interval (CI), 3.45-5.83) that in the control patients. After adjustment for potential confounders, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, congestive heart failure, and coronary artery disease, ESRD patients were 2.78 times (95% CI, 2.02-3.84) more likely to develop RAO in cohort for the total sample. Among patients with hypertension, the RAO incidence rate was significantly higher in the ESRD group, and hypertension significantly increased RAO risk even after adjustment for other confounders in the cohort.ESRD increases the risk of RAO, particularly in ESRD patients with hypertension. Therefore, clinicians should educate ESRD patients about RAO and ensure appropriate blood pressure control.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the association between neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the development of retinal vein occlusion (RVO). METHODS Forty patients were included in the study. Forty age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers were recruited as the control group. The RVO diagnosis was made clinically, based on the findings of fundus examination. The NLR and file records of the patients and the control group were compared. RESULTS The mean age of patients was 64 ± 12 years. Neutrophil levels were higher in RVO patients compared to the control subjects (5.1 ± 1.9 vs 3.6 ± 1.0, p<0.001). Lymphocyte levels were lower in RVO patients compared with the control subjects (2.0 ± 0.7 vs 2.6 ± 0.9, p = 0.005). The NLR was significantly higher in RVO patients compared with the control subjects (3.0 ± 2.7 vs 1.5 ± 0.3, p<0.001). According to the receiver operator characteristics curve analysis, the optimal cutoff value of NLR to predict RVO was >1.89, with 72.5% sensitivity and 100% specificity. CONCLUSIONS The current study demonstrated that higher NLR was associated with the development of RVO. The NLR may be used as a predictive tool for identifying risk for RVO.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) following retinal artery occlusion (RAO). METHODS The study cohort included all patients diagnosed with RAO between January 1999 and December 2008 (n=688) in the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000. The control group included randomly selected patients (n=4128) from the same database that were matched to the study group, using a propensity score, for age, gender, and comorbid diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, chronic renal disease and atrial fibrillation status. The ACS-free survival rate was calculated using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to obtain the adjusted HR for ACS after adjustment for potential confounding factors. The incidence and risk of ACS were compared between the RAO and control groups. RESULTS Thirty-seven patients in the RAO group (5.38%) and 138 controls (3.34%) had ACS (p=0.0063) during the follow-up period, resulting in a significantly higher risk of ACS in the RAO group (HR=1.67, 95% CI 1.16 to 2.40). After adjustment for potential confounders, the HR for developing ACS in the RAO group was 1.72 (95% CI 1.20 to 2.47) times higher than that of controls. When stratified by RAO type, the adjusted HR for ACS was 3.57 (95% CI 2.09 to 6.10) for the central RAO subgroup. CONCLUSIONS We found that RAO increased the risk for ACS. We recommend thorough follow-up cardiovascular examinations and medical prevention for ACS in patients following RAO.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a life-threatening disease and a major cause of mortalities worldwide. While many of the atherosclerotic sequelae are reflected as microvascular effects in the eye, the molecular mechanisms of their development is not yet known. In this study, we employed a systems biology approach to unveil the most significant events and key molecular mediators of ophthalmic sequelae caused by atherosclerosis. Literature mining was used to identify the proteins involved in both atherosclerosis and ophthalmic diseases. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was prepared using the literature-mined seed nodes. Network topological analysis was carried out using Cytoscape, while network nodes were annotated using database for annotation, visualization and integrated discovery in order to identify the most enriched pathways and processes. Network analysis revealed that mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAPK1) and protein kinase C occur with highest betweenness centrality, degree and closeness centrality, thus reflecting their functional importance to the network. Our analysis shows that atherosclerosis-associated ophthalmic complications are caused by the convergence of neurotrophin signaling pathways, multiple immune response pathways and focal adhesion pathway on the MAPK signaling pathway. The PPI network shares features with vasoregression, a process underlying multiple vascular eye diseases. Our study presents a first clear and composite picture of the components and crosstalk of the main pathways of atherosclerosis-induced ocular diseases. The hub bottleneck nodes highlight the presence of molecules important for mediating the ophthalmic complications of atherosclerosis and contain five established drug targets for future therapeutic modulation efforts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Controversies concerning the association of retinal microvascular abnormalities (RMAs) with atherosclerosis in patients with diabetes exist. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between RMAs and carotid atherosclerotic lesions in Chinese inpatients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS This cross-sectional study involved 2870 type 2 diabetic patients including 1602 men aged 15-90 years and 1268 women aged 17-88 years. Both retinal arteriosclerosis (RA) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) were determined by digital fundus photography using a standardized protocol. RMAs are defined as the presence of either RA or DR. Carotid atherosclerotic lesions including carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), carotid atherosclerotic plaque and stenosis were assessed and compared between patients with and without RMAs based on Doppler ultrasound. The association of RMAs with carotid atherosclerotic lesions was analyzed by linear and binary logistic regression analyses. RESULTS The CIMT values in both male and female diabetics with RMAs were significantly greater than in those without RMAs after controlling for age (0.88±0.21 vs. 0.77±0.20 mm for men, p=0.002; and 0.84±0.19 vs. 0.76±0.21 mm for women, p=0.002). The prevalence of carotid plaque was also markedly higher in patients with RMAs than in those without RMAs after adjusting for age (54.3% vs. 23.9% for men, p<0.001; 48.4% vs. 32.0% for women, p=0.046). However, no significant difference was observed in the prevalence of carotid stenosis in either men or women with or without RMAs. After controlling for multiple confounding factors, RMAs were independently associated with increased CIMT in both men (β: 0.067, 95% CI: 0.026-0.269, p=0.018) and women (β: 0.087, 95% CI: 0.058-0.334, p=0.005) with type 2 diabetes, and they were also closely associated with the presence of carotid plaque (OR: 2.17, 95% CI: 1.54-3.05, p<0.001 for men; OR: 1.38, 95% CI: 0.91-2.08, p=0.129 for women) in men with type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS RMAs were closely associated with early carotid atherosclerotic lesions in hospitalized Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes. Our results suggested that changes in retinal microvasculature may play a role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and may be used as an indicator of early atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Retinal vein occlusion is a common, vision-threatening vascular disorder. The role of inflammation in the pathogenesis and clinical consequences of retinal vein occlusion is a topic of growing interest. It has long been recognized that systemic inflammatory disorders, such as autoimmune disease, are a significant risk factor for this condition. A number of more recent laboratory and clinical studies have begun to elucidate the role inflammation may play in the molecular pathways responsible for the vision-impairing consequences of retinal vein occlusion, such as macular edema. This improved understanding of the role of inflammation in retinal vein occlusion has allowed the development of new treatments for the disorder, with additional therapeutic targets and strategies to be identified as our understanding of the topic increases.
