Abstract
The spreading knowledge of the health benefits of coffee and the development of gastronomy with a wide range of coffees prompt an evaluation of their caffeine content in terms of safe intake. The study analyzed the caffeine content of popular coffees in comparison with recommendations for a safe single dose (200 mg) and daily caffeine intake (400 mg), and guidelines for drinking 3-5 cups of coffee per day. A total of 299 coffee samples from franchise shops and homemade coffees were tested. The "takeaway" coffees had a three times higher mean caffeine content (p < 0.005) compared to homemade coffees. Americano coffee was the "strongest" (143 mg caffeine/serving on average), while coffee prepared by pouring hot water over one teaspoon of ground coffee was the "lightest" (23 mg caffeine/serving on average) (p < 0.05). Over 200 mg of caffeine per serving was found in 4% of samples. Over 400 mg of caffeine would be consumed by people drinking "on the go" 4-5 servings of many types of coffee, except espresso. In this respect, homemade coffees are safer. Therefore, recommendations on drinking coffee should be more practical, and indicate not only the number of cups, but also the "strength" of various types of coffee, in order to avoid the regular intake of high amounts of caffeine.

Abstract
The scientific literature indicates that there is a limited number of data on the content of bioactive components in coffees consumed "on the go". Therefore, this study examined the polyphenol and caffeine content of different types of coffee from franchise coffee shops, and the caffeine/total polyphenol ratio. The five most popular types of coffee purchased in six franchise coffee shops in Warsaw were analysed. A total of 120 coffee samples were tested. A significant positive (r = 0.7407, p < 0.001) correlation was found between the total polyphenol and caffeine content in all coffee types tested. Per unit volume, espresso coffee had the highest significant (p < 0.005) average total polyphenol and caffeine contents (232.9 ± 63.9 mg/100 mL and 198.6 ± 68.3 mg/100 mL, respectively). After taking into account the coffee's serving size, a serving of Americano provided significantly (p < 0.05) the most total polyphenol (average 223.5 ± 81.5 mg), while the highest caffeine content was provided by a serving of ice latte/latte frappe (average 136 ± 57.0 mg). The most favourable ratio of caffeine to total polyphenols (0.56) was found in a serving of Americano coffee; therefore, it seems that this coffee can be considered optimal in terms of the content of both compounds. These findings demonstrate that the polyphenol and caffeine contents of coffees offered in franchise coffee shops are closely related to the serving size.

Abstract
Studies have suggested associations between gestational exposure to caffeine and adverse outcomes, however the evidence is still limited. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted to investigate the association between prenatal caffeine exposure and neurobehavioral disorders. The MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, and LILACS databases were searched. Observational studies involving women with documented caffeine consumption during pregnancy were eligible for inclusion. The outcomes evaluated were behavioral and intellectual development, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and related behaviors. The data were analyzed by qualitative synthesis. The ROBINS-I tool was employed to assess the risk of bias, and the certainty of evidence was evaluated using GRADE (PROSPERO: CRD42023421164). The search yielded fourteen studies that met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. The sample size among pregnant women ranged from 173 to 64,189, and among children ranged from 88 to 49,190. Maternal caffeine consumption during pregnancy ranged from 0 to 1000 mg/day, with the highest levels observed during mid-pregnancy. Seven studies indicated a potential association between prenatal caffeine exposure and neurobehavioral/neurodevelopment deficits, one study showed that prenatal caffeine exposure improved peer problems, and six studies did not show a significant effect of prenatal caffeine consumption on neurobehavioral disorders. The included studies were classified as moderate for the risk of bias and with very low certainty of evidence. Thus, the evidence is insufficient to confirm with certainty that the prenatal caffeine exposure leads to neurobehavioral disorders. Studies heterogenicity, as well as their variable quality and the presence of several confounding factors, generate uncertainty.

Abstract
Caffeine intake during pregnancy is common. Caffeine crosses the placenta, raising concerns about its possible deleterious effects on the developing embryo/fetus. Studies on this subject show conflicting results, and still there is no consensus on the recommended dose of caffeine during pregnancy. We performed an integrative review with studies from six databases, using broad MESH terms to allow the identification of publications that addressed the outcomes of caffeine use during pregnancy, with no date limit for publications, in English and Portuguese language. The research returned 16,192 articles. After removing duplicates, screening by title, abstract and full-text, we evaluated 257 and included 59 articles. We found association between caffeine intake and pregnancy loss, low birth weight, cardiac and genital anomalies, higher body mass, and neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral outcomes. The effects were often dose dependent. No association with prematurity has been demonstrated, but one study showed a small reduction in gestational age with increasing doses of caffeine intake. Defining a safe dose for caffeine intake during pregnancy is a challenging task due to the heterogeneity in study designs and results, as well as the difficulty of reliably assessing the amount of caffeine consumed. In some studies, exposures below the recommended level of caffeine intake during pregnancy (200 mg/day), as suggested by the guidelines, were associated with pregnancy loss, low birth weight, cardiac and genital anomalies, higher body mass, and neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral outcomes. Well-designed studies with reliable quantification of caffeine intake are needed to assess the safety of low doses during pregnancy.

Abstract
Epidemiologic studies of low-frequency exposures or outcomes using metabolomics analyses of neonatal dried blood spots (DBS) often require assembly of samples with substantial differences in duration of storage. Independent assessment of stability of metabolites in archived DBS will enable improved design and interpretation of epidemiologic research utilizing DBS. Neonatal DBS routinely collected and stored as part of the California Genetic Disease Screening Program between 1983 and 2011 were used. The study population included 899 children without cancer before age 6 years, born in California. High-resolution metabolomics with liquid-chromatography mass spectrometry was performed, and the relative ion intensities of common metabolites and selected xenobiotic metabolites of nicotine (cotinine and hydroxycotinine) were evaluated. In total, we detected 26,235 mass spectral features across 2 separate chromatography methods (C18 hydrophobic reversed-phase chromatography and hydrophilic-interaction liquid chromatography). For most of the 39 metabolites related to nutrition and health status, we found no statistically significant annual trends across the years of storage. Nicotine metabolites were captured in the DBS with relatively stable intensities. This study supports the usefulness of DBS stored long-term for epidemiologic studies of the metabolome. -Omics-based information gained from DBS may also provide a valuable tool for assessing prenatal environmental exposures in child health research.

Abstract
Kolanut contains caffeine and it is widely consumed in various social contexts in Nigeria and other Sub-Saharan African countries. While some studies have suggested that kolanut is consumed by pregnant women, there is a dearth of information on the prevalence, consumption pattern and reasons for kolanut consumption among this group. This study investigated kolanut use among pregnant women in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional study involving 478 consenting pregnant women in all trimesters of pregnancy was conducted. Semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect data. Associations between kolanut use and respondent characteristics were investigated using the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. The mean age of the women was 28.7 ± 6.3 years. One hundred and sixty-two (33.9%) of women reported kolanut use during pregnancy, 140 (29.3%) in the current pregnancy. Fifty-five (39.3%) pregnant women reported frequent use and 46 (32.9%) used it in high quantities. Significant associations were found between current kolanut use and Hausa respondents (p = 0.014), educational level; secondary (p = 0.032), tertiary (p = 0.006), TBA (p = 0.005). The majority (93.7%) used kolanut to prevent spitting, nausea, and vomiting. This study showed that kolanut use is quite common among pregnant women and frequently used in large quantities.

Perinatal Psychoactive Substances Use: A Rising Perinatal Mental Health Concern. J Clin Med 2023; 12:jcm12062175. Abstract
Introduction: A significant increase in psychoactive drugs use was observed in women of childbearing age and during the perinatal period worldwide. Yet, the use of illicit drugs, alcohol and tobacco during pregnancy is a serious health risk for the mother, developing fetus and newborn. Methods: This review of current trends and consequences of psychoactive substance use in the general population and in pregnant women was conducted using the English and French literature published during the years 2000 to 2022, supplemented by guidelines, meta-analyses and reviews. Results: According to current rates of prenatal substances use, it was calculated that 380,000 offspring were exposed to illicit substances, more than 500,000 to alcohol and over one million to tobacco during uterine life. Alarmingly, drug-related pregnancy-associated mortality has shown a staggering 190% rise between 2010 and 2019 in the USA. Different drugs of abuse, when used during pregnancy, increase the risk of stillbirth, neonatal abstinence syndrome and sudden infant death. Adverse effects on pregnancy include premature rupture of membranes, placental abruption, preterm birth, low birth space? weight and small-for-gestational-age infants. There is also an increased risk of morbidity and mortality for the pregnant women. Long-term negative adverse effects of perinatal exposure to substances also include a number of neurocognitive, behavioral and emotional dysfunctions in infants. Each type of substance has its own specificities, which will be briefly summarized. Conclusion: All childbearing age women must be informed about the potential harm of the prenatal use of psychoactive substances and should be encouraged to stop their use when pregnancy is planned and, at least, when pregnancy is known. Questioning women about their alcohol consumption should be systematic at the first prenatal visit and then at every prenatal visit until delivery. Multidisciplinary prevention approaches as well as intervention measures targeted to each type of psychoactive substance can save mothers’ lives and mitigate serious adversities to the offspring.

Abstract
Maternal caffeine consumption is associated with adverse gestational outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the intake of caffeine and factors associated with the non-adherence to caffeine intake recommendations in a cohort of 463 women before (T0) and in each trimester of gestation (T1, T2, and T3), by using validated questionnaires. Caffeine intake (median (mg/day), IQR) was 100.0 (181.1) at T0, 9.42 (66.2) at T1, 12.5 (65.6) at T2, and 14.0 (61.1) at T3 (p < 0.001). Non-compliance prevalence (intake > 200 mg/day) was 6.2% at T1, 4.2% at T2, and 2.7% at T3. Not being an active smoker at T1 (OR = 0.17; 95% CI 0.05−0.59) and T2 (OR = 0.22; 95% CI 0.09−0.52), adherence to the Mediterranean Diet at T1 (OR = 0.50; 95% CI 0.28−0.88) and T2 (OR = 0.39; 95% CI 0.15−1.02), and moderate physical activity at T1 (OR = 0.50; 95% CI 0.28−0.88) were inversely associated with caffeine consumption. Although caffeine intake may be considered low, intake prevalence increases throughout pregnancy. Although the main source of caffeine during pregnancy is coffee, attention must be also paid to the increasingly intake of chocolate, of which the effect during pregnancy is controversial. Smoking, non-adherence to a good quality diet, and light physical activity are associated with a higher caffeine intake and a lower compliance with caffeine intake recommendations. Perinatal dietary and lifestyle educational policies are needed.

Abstract
The evidence as to whether caffeine consumption is beneficial or harmful to human health has been mixed. This study aimed to examine the effect of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration on the association between caffeine consumption and mineral metabolism in pregnant women. This is a cross-sectional study involving pregnant women at their 25th to 35th gestational week recruited at antenatal clinics in the period of July 2019 to December 2020. Peripheral blood samples were collected to determine their total 25(OH)D, albumin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), calcium, phosphate, and ferritin level in serum. Questionnaires on demographics and dietary intake were also administered. Among 181 pregnant women recruited (Average age = 32.9 years), 50 (27.6%) of them were found to be vitamin D insufficient (25(OH)D concentration < 75 nmol/L), and 131 (72.4%) were vitamin D sufficient (25(OH)D concentration ≥ 75 nmol/L). Adjusted regression models identified an association between higher caffeine intake and lower ALP level only among vitamin D-sufficient pregnant women (β = −0.24, p = 0.006), but not in those with insufficient vitamin D (β = −0.02, p = 0.912). The findings provide new insights into 25(OH)D concentration as a potential modifier of the health effects of caffeine consumption during pregnancy.

Abstract
Tea is the second most popular beverage in the world and beneficial to health. It has been demonstrated that tea polyphenols can reduce the risk of diseases, such as cancers, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer's disease, etc. But the knowledge of tea extract on the female germline is limited. Folliculogenesis is a complicated process and prone to be affected by ROS. Tea polyphenols can reduce the accumulation of ROS in folliculogenesis and affect oocyte maturation. Tea extract also influences granulosa cell proliferation and expansion during oocyte growth and maturation. However, the studies about the benefits of tea extract on female germline are few, and the underlying mechanisms are obscure. In the present study, we will mainly discuss the effects of tea extract on ovarian function, oocyte maturation, and the underlying possible mechanisms, and according to the discussion, we suggest that tea extract may have benefits for oocytes at an appropriate dose.

Abstract
Introduction: Caffeine is a natural alkaloid, isolated from more than 60 plant species. Over 80% of the world's population consumes caffeine on daily basis through the consumption of coffee, tea, chocolates and, more recently, energy drinks. As a pharmacologically potent substance caffeine is an ingredient of many medicaments available on the pharmaceutical market of Republic of Serbia without a doctor's prescription. Besides that, caffeine acts as a psychoactive stimulant, mild diuretic, and displays an interaction with some medicaments due to the induction of CYP1 and CYP2 isoenzymes. Keeping in mind all of the above, it is necessary to take into account the daily caffeine intake, as well as to control its content in energy drinks. Aim: The aim of this study was spectrophotometric determination of caffeine content in energy drinks and tea, available in markets of the Republic of Serbia. Material and Methods: Caffeine was determinated by UV/VIS spectrophotometry in nine types of energy drinks and eight samples of black and green tea. Results: The results showed that caffeine content in energy drink samples ranged from 26.81 to 35.44 mg/100mL and corresponds to declaration. The caffeine content in tea samples varies with the species (11.27-22.61 mg/100mL for green and 13.85-22.73 mg/100mL for black tea), but also with origin, growth conditions and tea processing. Conclusion: The obtained data suggest that UV/VIS spectrophotometry can be used for routine determination and control of caffeine content in energy drinks and tea. It is important to note that caffeine intake through the usual daily consumption of tea and energy drinks should not have a negative impact on human health, but this alkaloid could be additionally consumed through other sources, which is especially important for certain groups of patients.
