Effects of motion paradigm on human perception of tilt and translation

The effect of varying sinusoidal linear acceleration on perception of human motion was examined using 4 motion paradigms: off-vertical axis rotation, variable radius centrifugation, linear lateral translation, and rotation about an earth-horizontal axis. The motion profiles for each paradigm included 6 frequencies (0.01–0.6 Hz) and 5 tilt amplitudes (5°–20°). Subjects verbally reported the perceived angle of their whole-body tilt and the peak-to-peak translation of their head in space and used a joystick capable of recording 2-axis motion in the sagittal and transversal planes to indicate the phase between the perceived and actual motions. The amplitudes of perceived tilt and translation were expressed in terms of gain, i.e., the ratio of perceived tilt to equivalent tilt angle, and the ratio of perceived translation to equivalent linear displacement. Tilt perception gain decreased, whereas translation perception gain increased, with increasing frequency. During off-vertical axis rotation, the phase of tilt perception and of translation perception did not vary across stimulus frequencies. These motion paradigms elicited similar responses in roll tilt and interaural perception of translation, with differences likely due to the influence of naso-occipital linear accelerations and input to the semicircular canals that varied across motion paradigms.

Asymmetries and three-dimensional features of vestibular cross-coupled stimuli illuminated through modeling

Head movements during sustained rotation can cause angular cross-coupling which leads to tumbling illusions. Even though angular vectors predict equal magnitude illusions for head movements in opposite directions, the magnitudes of the illusions are often surprisingly asymmetric, such as during leftward versus rightward yaw while horizontal in a centrifuge. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of the angular-linear stimulus combinations from eight different published papers in which asymmetries were found. Interactions between all angular and linear vectors, including gravity, are taken into account to model the three-dimensional consequences of the stimuli. Three main results followed. First, for every pair of head yaw movements, an asymmetry was found in the stimulus itself when considered in a fully three-dimensional manner, and the direction of the asymmetry matched the subjectively reported magnitude asymmetry. Second, for pitch and roll head movements for which motion sickness was measured, the stimulus was found symmetric in every case except one, and motion sickness generally aligned with other factors such as the existence of a head rest. Third, three-dimensional modeling predicted subjective inconsistency in the direction of perceived rotation when linear and angular components were oppositely-directed, and predicted surplus illusory rotation in the direction of head movement.

Symmetries of a generic utricular projection: neural connectivity and the distribution of utricular information

Sensory contribution to perception and action depends on both sensory receptors and the organization of pathways (or projections) reaching the central nervous system. Unlike the semicircular canals that are divided into three discrete sensitivity directions, the utricle has a relatively complicated anatomical structure, including sensitivity directions over essentially 360° of a curved, two-dimensional disk. The utricle is not flat, and we do not assume it to be. Directional sensitivity of individual utricular afferents decreases in a cosine-like fashion from peak excitation for movement in one direction to a null or near null response for a movement in an orthogonal direction. Directional sensitivity varies slowly between neighboring cells except within the striolar region that separates the medial from the lateral zone, where the directional selectivity abruptly reverses along the reversal line. Utricular primary afferent pathways reach the vestibular nuclei and cerebellum and, in many cases, converge on target cells with semicircular canal primary afferents and afference from other sources. Mathematically, some canal pathways are known to be characterized by symmetry groups related to physical space. These groups structure rotational information and movement. They divide the target neural center into distinct populations according to the innervation patterns they receive. Like canal pathways, utricular pathways combine symmetries from the utricle with those from target neural centers. This study presents a generic set of transformations drawn from the known structure of the utricle and therefore likely to be found in utricular pathways, but not exhaustive of utricular pathway symmetries. This generic set of transformations forms a 32-element group that is a semi-direct product of two simple abelian groups. Subgroups of the group include order-four elements corresponding to discrete rotations. Evaluation of subgroups allows us to functionally identify the spatial implications of otolith and canal symmetries regarding action and perception. Our results are discussed in relation to observed utricular pathways, including those convergent with canal pathways. Oculomotor and other sensorimotor systems are organized according to canal planes. However, the utricle is evolutionarily prior to the canals and may provide a more fundamental spatial framework for canal pathways as well as for movement. The fullest purely otolithic pathway is likely that which reaches the lumbar spine via Deiters' cells in the lateral vestibular nucleus. It will be of great interest to see whether symmetries predicted from the utricle are identified within this pathway.

Head stabilization shows visual and inertial dependence during passive stimulation: implications for virtual rehabilitation

Sensorimotor coordination relies on the fine calibration and integration of visual, vestibular, and somatosensory input. Using virtual environments (VE) allows for the dissociation of visual and inertial inputs to manipulate human behavioral outputs. Our goal was to employ VE technology in a novel manner to investigate how head stabilization is affected by spatiotemporal properties of dynamic visual input when combined with passive motion on a linear sled. Healthy adults (n = 12) wore a head-mounted display during naso-occipital sinusoidal horizontal whole body translations while seated. Subjects were secured in a seat with a five-point harness, with the head free to move. Frequency and amplitude of sinusoidal input (i.e., inertial conditions) were set to create overlapping conditions of maximum acceleration (amax) or velocity (vmax). Four inertial conditions were combined with four visual conditions (VIS). VIS were created so that direction of optic flow either matched direction of passive motion or did not. The effect of near and far fixation distance within the VE was also tested. Head kinematics were collected with a three-axis gyro. Head stability showed a complex interaction dependent on changes in weighting of visual and inertial inputs that changed with the sled driving frequency. Inertial condition affected amplitude (p < 0.0000) and phase (p < 0.0000) of head pitch angular velocity. In the absence of visual input, head pitch velocity amplitude increased (p < 0.01). An interaction effect between inertial and VIS conditions on head yaw occurred in SW (p < 0.05). There was also a significant interaction of depth of field and inertial condition on amplitude (p < 0.001) and phase (p < 0.05) of head yaw velocity in SW, especially during high vmax conditions. We conclude visual flow can organize lateral cervical responses despite being discordant with inertial input. When using VE for rehabilitation, possible unintended, involuntary or reflexive motor responses that may not be present in traditional training environments should be taken into consideration.

Sensory conflict compared in microgravity, artificial gravity, motion sickness, and vestibular disorders

Perceptual disturbances and motion sickness are often attributed to sensory conflict. We investigated several conditions: head movements in microgravity, periodic motions in 1-g, and locomotion with vestibular disorders. In every case, linear vectors such as linear and gravitational acceleration are crucial factors, as previously found for head movements in artificial gravity, and thus the importance of measuring linear vectors emerges as a common theme. By modeling the sensory conflict between the vestibular and somatosensory systems, we computed a measure of linear conflict known as the "Stretch Factor". We hypothesized that the motions with the greatest Stretch Factor would be the most provocative motions.

RESULTS

For head movements in microgravity, the Stretch Factor can explain why fast movements are more provocative than slow movements, and why pitch movements are more provocative than yaw movements. For off-vertical-axis rotation (OVAR) in 1-g, the Stretch Factor predicts that the most provocative frequency is higher than that for vertical linear oscillation (VLO). For example, the same sensor dynamics can predict a most provocative frequency around 0.2 Hz for VLO but 0.3 Hz for OVAR, solving a mystery of this experimentally observed discrepancy. Finally, we determined that certain sensory conflict perceptions reported by vestibular patients could be explained via mathematical simulation.

Differences between perception and eye movements during complex motions

During passive whole-body motion in the dark, the motion perceived by subjects may or may not be veridical. Either way, reflexive eye movements are typically compensatory for the perceived motion. However, studies are discovering that for certain motions, the perceived motion and eye movements are incompatible. The incompatibility has not been explained by basic differences in gain or time constants of decay. This paper uses three-dimensional modeling to investigate gondola centrifugation (with a tilting carriage) and off-vertical axis rotation. The first goal was to determine whether known differences between perceived motions and eye movements are true differences when all three-dimensional combinations of angular and linear components are considered. The second goal was to identify the likely areas of processing in which perceived motions match or differ from eye movements, whether in angular components, linear components and/or dynamics. The results were that perceived motions are more compatible with eye movements in three dimensions than the one-dimensional components indicate, and that they differ more in their linear than their angular components. In addition, while eye movements are consistent with linear filtering processes, perceived motion has dynamics that cannot be explained by basic differences in time constants, filtering, or standard GIF-resolution processes.
