Abstract
(1) Background: Quality of life assessment is a critical aspect of breast cancer patient outcomes, as diagnosis, prognosis and treatment can have a major impact on quality of life. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of the sample and to verify the relationship between quality of life (QOL) in women diagnosed with breast cancer (BC) and their age, type or surgery and time since treatment; (2) Methods: a cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted with 183 women diagnosed with BC, aged 30−80 years in Mexico. Women’s QOL was assessed using two questionnaires, The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer-Quality of Life Core Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and The Breast Cancer Module (EORTC QLQ-BR23). (3) Results: the results show significant differences in several items when the variable age is taken into account, indicating that younger women have poorer social and sexual function, as well as poorer sexual enjoyment and lower expectations of the future. The type of surgery also indicates a significantly better QOL in those women who receive conservative treatment versus a mastectomy; the time elapsed since surgery does not show any significant results, except for sexual functioning and breast-related symptoms where >5 years implies better scores on the items. (4) Conclusions: in conclusion, it is important to take into account the characteristics of women with BC, particularly at the time of treatment, in order to mitigate the impact of the disease on their QOL with the help of a multidisciplinary team.

Abstract
Introduction Breast cancer survivors are the largest group of female cancer survivors. Oncologic breast surgery can have a profound impact on a woman's body image and sense of self that can significantly affect their quality of life (QOL). The paucity of data about the effect of type of surgery on QOL of Indian breast cancer survivors has led to this study. Materials and Methods This prospective study included consecutive female early breast cancer patients who underwent primary surgery, that is, breast conservation surgery (BCS) or modified radical mastectomy (MRM) from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2015. The primary objective was the comparison of QOL using European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and EORTC QLQ-BR 23 between the two groups at 6 months and 1 year postsurgery with the baseline. Results One hundred and thirty-eight patients were included of which 62 underwent BCS and 76 underwent MRM. BCS patients fared better with respect to physical functioning, dyspnea, fatigue, appetite loss, and body image at 6 months ( p < 0.05) as compared with MRM. At 1 year postsurgery, BCS patients fared better with respect to physical functioning, role functioning, global health status, body image, sexual enjoyment, and dyspnea, while MRM patients fared better in emotional functioning and future prospectives ( p < 0.05). Conclusion Patients undergoing BCS have a better QOL with respect to various functional and symptom scales at 6 months and 1 year. However, patients undergoing MRM perform better in terms of future perspective and emotional functioning at 1 year.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of the study is to describe QoL in women who have undergone surgical treatment for breast cancer (BC). The focus of the description is the differences in QoL between women treated by modified radical mastectomy (MRM) and women who underwent breast-conserving surgery (BCS) at the Breast and Endocrine Surgery Department of the Clinical Center of Niš, Serbia. METHOD From January 1, 2014, until December 31, 2017, 300 patients were treated with BCS and 300 patients with MRM. To assess the QOL, a total of 600 BC patients completed the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaires. The results were analyzed using the t test and chi-square test. WHOQOL produces a quality of life profile. It derives four domain scores: physical health, psychological, social relationships, and environment. Social and demographic factors (age, education, marital status) were collected in both groups. RESULT In all four domains, patients treated with conserving surgeries scored higher than patients treated with radical mastectomy. This result was controlled for a set of demographic variables. The differences in QoL scores are present on all levels of controlling variables. CONCLUSION According to the results of this study, the QoL in women after an MRM is significantly lower than the QoL in women after BCS. It is especially true for the environment domain. Conserving surgery should be recommended and specific, and patient-centered interventions for increasing QoL of the patients who opted for radical mastectomy should be designed. The intervention should focus on social and environmental domains.

Abstract
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among females worldwide, of whom more than 80% survive for more than 5 years. Hence, ensuring a good quality of life (QOL) is essential to achieve holistic approach in treating patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted to compare the QOL in women who underwent modified radical mastectomy (MRM) and breast conservation surgery (BCS) for breast cancer in the last 5 years. QOL was evaluated based on the long-term quality of life-breast cancer (LTQOL-BC) questionnaire. A greater percentage of women who underwent MRM complained of difficulty in completing their house work compared with the BCS group (50% compared with 31%). Twenty-five percent (6) of the women who had undergone MRM reported feeling of being incomplete as women, along with a lack of femininity. However, more than 80% of the women in both groups said that they felt stronger as survivors and derived strength from their experience. There were significant differences in the quality of life of women from both groups in terms of physical function and body image, with the BCS group appearing to have a better QOL.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), evaluate the measurement invariance with respect to sex, age, and tumor location, as well as analyze associations between life satisfaction and socio-demographic and clinical variables among individuals with resected, non-advanced cancer. METHODS A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to explore the dimensionality of the scale and test invariance across gender, age, and tumor localization in a prospective, multicenter cohort of 713 patients who completed the following scales: SWLS, Health-related Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30), Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18). RESULTS Confirmatory factor analysis results indicated that the SWLS is an essentially unidimensional instrument, providing accurate scores: both McDonald's omega and Cronbach's alpha estimates were 0.91. Strong measurement invariance was found to hold across gender, age, and tumor localization. Low satisfaction with life was associated with psychological symptoms (anxiety, depression, and somatization), and decreased quality of life (malfunction, symptoms, poor global QoL). CONCLUSION The SWLS is a reliable, valid satisfaction with life measurement among people with cancer and should be recommended as an indicator of psychological adjustment in oncological patients.

Abstract
Recent clinical trials have shown that sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) alone without axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) can offer excellent regional control if there is sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) metastases to 1-2 nodes. This study aimed to explore the predictive factors for non-sentinel lymph node (NSLN) metastasis in breast cancer patients with 1-2 positive SLNs.Patients with breast cancer and 1-2 positive SLN admitted between March 2009 and March 2017 and who underwent ALND after SLN biopsy (SLNB) at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital were analyzed retrospectively. Factors influencing the status of NSLN were studied by univariate and multivariate analysis.Of 1125 patients, 147 patients had SLN metastasis (13.1%) and 119 patients (81.0%) had 1-2 positive SLNs. Among them, 42 patients (35.3%) had NSLN metastasis. The invasive tumor size (P <.001), histological grade (P =.011), lymphovascular invasion (LVI) (P =.006), and over-expression of HER2 (P =.025) significantly correlated with non-SLN metastasis by univariate analysis. LVI (LVI) (P =.007; OR: 4.130; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.465-11.641), invasive tumor size (P <.001; OR: 7.176; 95% CI: 2.710-19.002), and HER2 over-expression (P =.006; OR: 5.489; 95% CI: 1.635-18.428) were independently associated with NSLN metastasis by the Logistic regression model. The ROC analysis identified a cut-off point of 26 mm of tumor size (area under the receiver operating characteristic [ROC] curve [AUC] 0.712, CI: 0.614-0.811) was useful for dividing patients with positive SLN (1-2 nodes) into non-SLN-positive and non-SLN-negative groups.For 1-2 positive SLNs of breast cancer, LVI, large invasive tumor size, and HER2 over-expression are independent factors affecting NSLN metastases.

Abstract
Ductal carcinoma in situ has been stable in incidence for a decade and has an excellent prognosis. Breast conservation therapy is safe and effective for most patients. Adjuvant whole breast radiation therapy is recommended to reduce the risk of local recurrence. Accelerated partial breast irradiation is a promising alternative to decrease toxicity and improve cosmetic results. Adjuvant hormonal therapy can reduce local recurrence, but should be used cautiously. Future directions in management include developing predictive tools for guidance for use of adjuvant therapy and selecting low-risk patients with ductal carcinoma in situ in whom surgery may be safely omitted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarise the evidence on determinants of health-related quality of life (HRQL) in Asian patients with breast cancer. DESIGN Systematic review conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations and registered with PROSPERO (CRD42015032468). METHODS According to the PRISMA guidelines, databases of MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase and PsycINFO were systematically searched using the following terms and synonyms: breast cancer, quality of life and Asia. Articles reporting on HRQL using EORTC-QLQ-C30, EORTC-QLQ-BR23, FACT-G and FACT-B questionnaires in Asian patients with breast cancer were eligible for inclusion. The methodological quality of each article was assessed using the quality assessment scale for cross-sectional studies or the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale for cohort studies. RESULTS Fifty-seven articles were selected for this qualitative synthesis, of which 43 (75%) were cross-sectional and 14 (25%) were longitudinal studies. Over 75 different determinants of HRQL were studied with either the EORTC or FACT questionnaires. Patients with comorbidities, treated with chemotherapy, with less social support and with more unmet needs have poorer HRQL. HRQL improves over time. Discordant results in studies were found in the association of age, marital status, household income, type of surgery, radiotherapy and hormone therapy and unmet sexuality needs with poor global health status or overall well-being. CONCLUSIONS In Asia, patients with breast cancer, in particular those with other comorbidities and those treated with chemotherapy, with less social support and with more unmet needs, have poorer HRQL. Appropriate social support and meeting the needs of patients may improve patients' HRQL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although some studies suggest that breast-conserving therapy (BCT) shows better psychosocial outcomes than mastectomy in patients with primary breast cancer, little is known about the outcomes of these surgical options in recurrent breast cancer. We investigated differences in overall survival and re-recurrence rates as well as psychosocial outcomes among patients who underwent BCT or mastectomy after the diagnosis of recurrent breast cancer in a single-center setting. METHODS 124 of 186 eligible patients who underwent surgical treatment for breast cancer recurrence completed the questionnaires on quality of life (EORTC QLQ-C30 and -BR23), fear of progression (PA-F-KF), anxiety and depression (HADS), and body image (BIS). RESULTS Women after breast-conserving surgery (n = 46) showed significantly better outcomes than women after mastectomy (n = 61) with respect to body image (P < 0.001 in BIS and p < 0.001 in BR23), social functioning (p = 0.016), emotional functioning (p = 0.028), and role functioning (p = 0.043). There were no significant group differences regarding anxiety, depression, and fear of progression as well as re-recurrence and survival rates. Predictors of good quality of life were partnership (OR 2.46), higher monthly family income (OR 3.54), and higher professional qualification (OR 4.3) in our group of patients. DISCUSSION Our results indicate that patients treated with breast-conserving therapy after recurrent breast cancer perceive lower impairments in body image and several aspects of quality of life than patients treated with mastectomy.

Abstract
Background To study the safety, feasibility and skin effects of irreversible electroporation (IRE) for breast tissue and breast cancer in animal models. Methods Eight pigs were used in this study. IRE was performed on the left breasts of the pigs with different skin–electrode distances, and the right breasts were used as controls. The electrodes were placed 1–8 mm away from the skin, with an electrode spacing of 1.5–2 cm. Imaging and pathological examinations were performed at specific time points for follow-up evaluation. Vital signs, skin damage, breast tissue changes and ablation efficacy were also closely observed. Eight rabbit models with or without VX2 breast tumor implantations were used to further assess the damage caused by and the repair of thin skin after IRE treatment for breast cancer. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound and elastosonography were used to investigate ablation efficacy and safety. Results During IRE, the color of the pig breast skin reversibly changed. When the skin–electrode distance was 3 mm, the breast skin clearly changed, becoming white in the center and purple in the surrounding region during IRE. One small purulent skin lesion was detected several days after IRE. When the skin–electrode distance was 5–8 mm, the breast skin became red during IRE. However, the skin architecture was normal when evaluated using gross pathology and hematoxylin-eosin staining. When the skin–electrode distance was 1 mm, skin atrophy and yellow glabrescence occurred in the rabbit breasts after IRE. When the skin–electrode distance was ≥5 mm, there was no skin damage in the rabbit model regardless of breast cancer implantation. After IRE, complete ablation of the targeted breast tissue or cancer was confirmed, and apoptosis was detected in the target tissue and outermost epidermal layer. In the ablated breasts of the surviving animals, complete mammary regeneration with normal skin and hair was observed. Furthermore, no massive fibrosis or mass formation were detected on ultrasound or through hematoxylin–eosin staining. Conclusions After IRE, the skin architecture was well preserved when the skin–electrode distance was ≥5 mm. Moreover, breast regeneration occurred without mass formation or obvious fibrosis. Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of radiation therapy on quality of life (QOL) of breast cancer patients during and until 1 year after radiation therapy treatment. Methods and materials Thirty-nine breast cancer patients treated with breast-conserving surgery were enrolled in a prospective study before whole breast radiation therapy (50 Gy plus a 10-Gy boost). No patient received chemotherapy. Data were collected before, at week 6 of radiation therapy, and 6 weeks and 1 year after radiation therapy. The primary outcome variable was quality of life (QOL), measured by Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Version 2 (SF-36). Risk factors potentially associated with total SF-36 scores and its physical and mental health component summary scores were also examined, including age, race, marital status, smoking history, menopausal status, endocrine treatment, cancer stage, sleep abnormalities (assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and perceived stress levels (assessed by the Perceived Stress Scale). Mixed effect modeling was used to observe QOL changes during and after radiation therapy. Results Total SF-36 scores did not change significantly during and up to 1 year after radiation therapy compared with baseline measures. Nevertheless, increased body mass index (BMI) and increased perceived stress were predictive of reduced total SF-36 scores over time (P = .0064, and P < .0001, respectively). In addition, increased BMI was predictive of reduced physical component summary scores of the SF-36 (P = .0011), whereas increased perceived stress was predictive of worse mental component summary scores (P < .0001). Other proposed potential risk factors including skin toxicity from radiation therapy were not significant. Conclusions Radiation therapy did not worsen QOL in breast cancer patients. However, pre-radiation therapy patient characteristics including BMI and perceived stress may be used to identify women who may experience decreased physical and mental function during and up to 1 year after radiation therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We examined the effects of surgery type and adjuvant chemotherapy on change in early-stage breast cancer patients' quality of life (QOL) over time. METHODS A cohort of 549 patients (33.5% ductal carcinoma in situ, 66.5% stages I/IIA) were interviewed a mean 6.1 weeks (Time1), and 6.2 (Time2), 12.3 (Time3), and 24.4 (Time4) months following definitive breast-conserving surgery (BCS) or mastectomy. QOL was measured using the total Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B). Adjusting for demographic, psychosocial, and clinical variables, multiple linear regression models estimated the associations between QOL and each of surgery type, chemotherapy, and their 2-way interaction at each interview. Adjusted generalized estimating equation (GEE) models tested Time1-Time4 change in QOL. RESULTS At Time2, chemotherapy (P < .001) and BCS (P < .001) were independently associated with worse QOL in adjusted linear regression, and the adverse effect of chemotherapy was prominent among patients who received BCS compared with those who received mastectomy (P interaction = .031). In the GEE model, QOL significantly improved over time among patients who received BCS (P trend = .047), mastectomy (P trend = .024), and chemotherapy (P trend < .001), but not among patients who did not receive chemotherapy (P trend = .720). All patients completed adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation by Time3. Regardless of surgery type, patients receiving chemotherapy reported lower QOL following surgery, and QOL improved after completion of adjuvant treatment. CONCLUSIONS Chemotherapy had a short-term negative impact on QOL after definitive surgical treatment regardless of surgery type. QOL rebounded after completion of adjuvant treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in quality of life in patients who received breast conserving surgery (BCS) or modified radical mastectomy (MRM) for breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 100 women with breast cancer who underwent either BCS or MRM between September 2011 and April 2012 at a private health center and completed their chemotherapy and radiation therapy cycles were included in the study. To assess the quality of life, we used a demographic questionnaire, the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the Quality of Life assessment in Breast Cancer (EORTC QLQ-BR23). RESULTS Using QLQ-C30, we found that patients who underwent BCS had better functional status and fewer symptoms than patients who underwent MRM. In QLQ-BR23, independent factors improving the functional scales were BCS, higher level of education and marital status (married); independent factors improving symptoms were BCS, higher level of education, younger age and low and normal body mass index (BMI). In QLQ-C30, independent factors affecting the functional and symptom scales were only BCS and higher level of education. CONCLUSIONS We determined that patients who received BCS had better functional status and less frequent symptoms than patients who underwent MRM.
