Abstract
PURPOSE Advanced cancer patients may perceive their disease as an experience of contingency: a (sudden) disruption of the life-narrative evoking existential concerns such as loss of meaning and identity. The research project In Search of Stories aimed to investigate whether and how reading and discussing literary texts assisted participants in integrating their diagnosis as the experience of contingency into their life-narrative. METHODS This qualitative study reports on interviews with 25 advanced cancer patients, who read a story from a curated collection of 10 literary texts. They discussed the story with a spiritual caregiver, using a reading guide to structure the conversation. The interviews were thematically analyzed using template analysis. RESULTS Participants identified with contingency experiences and related existential concerns presented in the texts, including loss of meaning and identity, bodily alienation, and social estrangement. Reading and discussing literary texts also enabled participants to engage in self-regulation; in exploring how to relate to devalued emotions and attitudes, and in further developing their identity post-diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS A structured reading of literary texts revolving around contingency experiences enables advanced cancer patients to identify with and articulate emotions, attitudes, and existential concerns such as loss of meaning and identity. This allows them to break down barriers in talking about their illness experiences and to transition towards acceptance of their diagnosis as the experience of contingency. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Reading and discussing literary texts about contingency may support people with advanced cancer to integrate their own experience of contingency into the life-narrative.

Abstract
Objective This study aims to explore the experiences and consequences of taste alterations in patients undergoing HSCT, how they respond to these changes, and the factors that influence their responses. Methods In this descriptive qualitative study, face-to-face semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 31 patients undergoing HSCT in a comprehensive hospital in Hubei, China. The interview data were transcribed and analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step analysis. The Symptom Management Theory was applied to design the study and identify key themes. Results Three key themes were identified from the theory: (1) the complexity and diversity of taste experiences; (2) coping strategies; and (3) the multifaceted challenges of coping. Taste alterations in HSCT patients were characterized by diversity and dynamism. Patients employed three distinct coping styles in response to taste alterations: active coping, reluctant submission, and passive coping. These coping styles were influenced by various factors, including the specific treatment modalities of HSCT, individual patient characteristics, and the healthcare environment. Conclusions The experience of taste alterations among HSCT patients is intricate and varied, and the importance of addressing this symptom can easily be underestimated. Management of taste alterations is influenced by multiple factors. Nursing staff should give careful attention to taste alterations in HSCT survivors, enhance their expertise in managing taste alterations, provide robust health education, conduct regular screening and assessments, and formulate individualized intervention plans to assist patients in actively and effectively managing taste alterations.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nutritional management of patients with esophageal cancer is a significant issue. This systematic review aimed to comprehensively synthesize qualitative research evidence on the experiences and requirements in nutritional management from the perspective of patients with esophageal cancer. METHODS A systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies were conducted. Studies written in Chinese or English were retrieved from nine databases, namely, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Embase, CNKI, WanFang, VIP, and SinoMed, from inception to December 23, 2022. After screening the titles, abstracts, and full texts, 19 articles were finally included for quality assessment and meta-synthesis. RESULTS Three comprehensive themes were derived. These were dietary experiences (perception of symptoms and dietary behaviors), emotional experiences (negative and positive emotions), and social support (inappropriate social support and inadequate nutritional management). CONCLUSIONS The experiences and requirements of esophageal cancer patients in terms of nutritional management during treatment and rehabilitation were reviewed and factors influencing nutritional management were discussed. The findings suggested that medical institutions should expedite the development of comprehensive nutritional management systems, create conducive nutritional environmental facilities, and establish interdisciplinary teams to implement personalized comprehensive interventional models for the management of patient nutrition. These steps would maximize the effectiveness of nutritional therapy, promote early patient recovery, and bridge the gap between healthcare professionals and patients in the understanding of nutritional management.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cancer therapy is essential and lifesaving; however, it can have short- and long-term consequences on patients' health. Up to 87% of cancer patients report changes in taste function, yet patients report a lack of support from clinicians regarding their experience with taste loss during and following treatment. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess clinicians' knowledge and experience with managing patients with taste loss and identify potential gaps in the availability of educational materials and diagnostic tools. METHOD In an online survey, sixty-seven participants who identify as clinicians and practice in the United States and work with cancer patients that complain of taste problems answered questions on their knowledge and experience supporting cancer patients experiencing changes in taste function and provided their opinion on access to educational materials. RESULTS The current study reports gaps in participants' knowledge of taste and taste disorder terminology, with 15.4% correctly defining both taste and flavor and roughly half were familiar with specific taste disorder classifications. Over half of the participants reported not having access to adequate information to help their patients manage taste alterations. Only two-thirds of participants reported routinely asking patients if they are experiencing changes in taste function. CONCLUSION Clinicians' responses emphasized the need to improve access to educational materials regarding taste changes and increase the availability of information regarding management strategies. Addressing these inequities in education and improving the standard of care is the first step in improving the care for cancer patients suffering from altered taste function.

Abstract
Nutrition is associated with pleasure and quality of life. The majority of oncological patients experience tumor-associated and treatment-associated nutrition-related symptoms and malnutrition. Consequently, the perception of nutrition during the course of the disease is increasingly more characterized by negative associations, which may persist for years after the end of treatment. This leads to a decreased quality of life, social isolation and a burden for relatives. In contrast, weight loss is initially positively perceived, especially by patients who previously perceived themselves as being overweight, until malnutrition becomes evident and leads to a decreased quality of life. Nutritional counseling can prevent weight loss, relieve adverse side effects, improve the quality of life and reduce mortality. Patients are not aware of this and the German healthcare system lacks structured and firmly established access pathways to nutritional counseling. Therefore, oncological patients need to be informed about the consequences of weight loss at an early stage and low-threshold access to nutritional counseling needs to be comprehensively implemented. Thus, malnutrition can be recognized and treated at an early stage and nutrition can contribute to a higher quality of life as a positively perceived daily activity.

Abstract
Individuals with cancer often present food aversion after initiation of anti-tumor treatment, which may impair nutritional status. We aim to assess the prevalence and factors associated with food aversion during cancer treatment. Articles from three databases were searched: MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Library. English was used, with no restriction on the year of publication. Inclusion criteria were original articles that evaluated food aversion in adults and the elderly undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy treatment. Fifteen articles were included. A high prevalence of food aversion (21-62%) was observed, with meat considered the most aversive food. The aversion is usually transient and may be due to gastrointestinal problems, such as nausea and vomiting, caused by chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment, and even psychological and emotional issues. Offering a new food before the beginning of treatment seems to be an effective strategy to reduce aversion, combined with nutritional and psychological monitoring. Cancer patients have a high prevalence of food aversion. Multidisciplinary care can minimize the consequences of cancer treatment.

Abstract
AIM This study was conducted to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish adaptation of the Taste and Smell Dysfunction Questionnaire (TSDQ) in hemodialysis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study involves 125 hemodialysis patients. Research data were collected using the Descriptive Characteristics Form for Hemodialysis Patients, the TSDQ, and the Questionnaire for the Assessment of Self-Reported Olfactory Functioning and Olfaction-Related Quality of Life. In addition, the questionnaire's language and content validity, construct validity, and reliability were evaluated. RESULTS With regard to content validity, a high degree of agreement was determined between expert opinions on the questionnaire items (CGI = 0.96). Exploratory factor analysis revealed that the questionnaire has a two-factor structure explaining 79.33% of the total variance. The confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that the model is within acceptable fit index limits with factor loads between 0.692 and 0.964. The Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficients of the scale and its two sub-dimensions are 0.928, 0.968, and 0.782, respectively. CONCLUSION The TSDQ is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating taste and smell changes in hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
Background and aimsTaste changes are the third most common bothersome symptom during treatment in children with cancer. However, it is still unclear what the essence of these taste changes are, to what degree concomitant changes in sense of smell qualify this bothersome treatment symptom and how much of an impact these changes have on the life of children with cancer. The aim of this study was to explore characteristics of both taste and smell changes and to gain insight into the impact of these changes in children with cancer receiving chemotherapy.MethodsSemi-structured interviews were performed until data saturation was achieved in each age group (6–12, 13–17 years). This resulted in an in-depth description of taste and smell changes, including its impact on the life of 27 children with various cancer types receiving chemotherapy. Thematic analysis of interview data was performed.ResultsInterview data could be grouped into three main themes, namely changes in (1) taste, (2) smell, and (3) eating behavior. As expected, most children reported experiencing taste and smell changes just after start of treatment, but changes varied greatly between children; that is, some reported changes in intensity (increased or decreased), whereas others reported different perceptions or preferences (from sweet to savory). Taste and smell changes (regardless of direction) negatively impacted quality of life, with these changes commonly described as “disappointing” or “frustrating.” Interestingly, particular chemotherapeutic agents were frequently mentioned regarding taste and smell changes, prompting sensory-specific coping strategies. Children's eating behavior changed in terms of alterations in food liking and appetite, sometimes due to chemosensory changes, but children also mentioned specific medication or hospital food being responsible for their altered eating behavior.ConclusionsBoth taste and smell changes are common in children with cancer. The essence of these changes varies widely, but taste and smell changes are generally considered bothersome treatment symptoms. Ways to cope with taste or smell changes specifically were described by the children warranting further research and offering the opportunity for enhancing patient-centered care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with functional constipation (FC) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) often report psychological abnormalities and decreased eating enjoyment. Several patients also complain of changes in the sense of smell and taste, but these are often disregarded clinically. AIMS Therefore, there is a need to determine whether taste/smell disturbances and psychological abnormalities are present in patients with FC or IBS and whether these are related to the severity of lower gastrointestinal symptoms. METHODS A total of 337 subjects were recruited, including FC (n = 115), IBS (n = 126), and healthy controls (n = 96). All participants completed questionnaires evaluating taste and smell (taste and smell survey (TSS)), Lower Gastrointestinal Symptoms Rating Scale (LGSRS), Hamilton anxiety scale (HAMA), and Hamilton depression scale (HAMD). TSS recorded information on the nature of taste and smell changes (TSCs) and the impact of these changes on the quality of life. LGSRS was used to assess the severity of lower gastrointestinal symptoms; HAMA and HAMD scales were used to reflect the psychosocial state. This study protocol was registered on the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (No. ChiCTR-2100044643). RESULTS Firstly, we found that taste and smell scores were higher in patients with IBS than in healthy controls. Secondly, for FC and IBS patients, LGSRS was significantly correlated with the taste score (Spearman's rho = 0.832, P < 0.001). LGSRS was also significantly correlated with HAMA (Spearman's rho = 0.357, P = 0.017) and HAMD (Spearman's rho = 0.377, P = 0.012). In addition, the taste score was significantly correlated with HAMD (Spearman's rho = 0.479, P = 0.001), while the smell score was also significantly correlated with HAMD (Spearman's rho = 0.325, P = 0.031). Thirdly, 60.87% and 71.43% of patients complained of taste abnormality, while 65.22% and 71.43% had smell abnormality in the FC and IBS groups, respectively. Meanwhile, 47.83% and 47.62% of patients suffered from anxiety, while 43.48% and 57.14% suffered from depression in the FC and IBS groups, respectively. Finally, we found significant differences in the taste, smell, HAMD, and LGSRS scores between the female and male IBS groups (P < 0.050). CONCLUSIONS TSCs and psychological disorders are prominent in FC and IBS patients. Taste abnormalities, as well as anxiety and depression, are significantly correlated with LGSRS. Awareness of this high prevalence of taste/smell abnormalities and the psychological changes among patients with FC and IBS may help better predict and understand the severity of symptoms.

Abstract
CONTEXT A common complaint among oncology patients receiving chemotherapy is altered taste perception. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate for differences in common symptoms and stress levels in patients who reported taste changes. METHODS Patients were receiving chemotherapy for breast, gastrointestinal, gynecological, or lung cancer. Change in the way food tastes (CFT) was assessed using the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale before the patients' second or third cycle of chemotherapy. Valid and reliable instruments were used to assess for depressive symptoms, state and trait of anxiety, cognitive impairment, diurnal variations in fatigue and energy, sleep disturbance, and pain. Stress was assessed using the Perceived Stress Scale and the Impact of Events Scale-Revised. Multiple logistic regression was used to evaluate for risk factors associated with CFT. RESULTS Of the 1329 patients, 49.4% reported CFT. Patients in the CFT group reported higher levels of depression, anxiety, fatigue, and sleep disturbance as well as higher levels of general and disease specific stress. Factors associated with CFT group included being non-White; receiving an antiemetic regimen that contained a neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist with two other antiemetics; having a lower functional status; higher levels of morning fatigue; and reporting higher scores on the hyperarousal subscale of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised. CONCLUSIONS This study provides new evidence on associations between taste changes and common co-occurring symptoms and stress in oncology patients receiving chemotherapy. Clinicians need to evaluate for taste changes in these patients because this symptom can effect patients' nutritional intake and quality of life.

Abstract
Purpose Patients with advanced cancer can experience their disease as a contingent life event. The sudden interruption of their life stories can obscure life goals and disrupt meaning making. In the context of the research project “In search of stories,” we aim to investigate the reading and discussion of selected stories which present ways of dealing with a contingent life event. In addition, we examine the use of a newly developed guide for reading these exemplary texts together with advanced cancer patients. Methods This qualitative study describes the experiences of five patients with advanced cancer who participated in a guided reading and discussion about selected literary texts. The intervention consisted of reading a selected story, after which each patient was interviewed, using the reading guide as a conversation template. The interviews were then thematically analyzed for their conceptual content using a template analysis. Results All five conversations showed some form of recognition in reaction to the chosen text, which led to personal identification of experiences of contingency, such as loss of life goals, impending death, or feelings of uncertainty. Besides the important role of identification, revealed by the responses to the questions in the reading guide, the discussion of the text helped them articulate their own experience and sources of meaning. Diverse worldviews came to the fore and concepts of meaning such as fate, life goals, quality of life, and death. Conclusions First experiences with our newly developed reading guide designed to support a structured reading of stories containing experiences of contingency suggest that it may help patients to express their own experiences of contingency and to reflect on these experiences. Implications for Cancer Survivors The intervention tested in this study may contribute to supportive care for survivors with advanced cancer, but further research is needed to evaluate its effect on quality of life.

Abstract
PURPOSE Taste and smell alterations (TAs and SAs) are often reported by patients with cancer receiving systemic antitumor therapy and can negatively impact food intake and quality of life. This study aimed to examine the occurrence of TAs and SAs and investigate the impact of TAs on overall liking of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) with warming and cooling sensations. METHODS Patients receiving systemic antitumor therapy completed a questionnaire on sensory alterations and evaluated overall liking of 5 prototype flavors of Nutridrink® Compact Protein (hot tropical ginger (HTG), hot mango (HM), cool red fruits (CRF), cool lemon (CL), and neutral (N)) on a 10-point scale via a sip test. Differences between patients with and without TAs were investigated using permutation analysis. RESULTS Fifty patients with various cancer types and treatments were included. Thirty patients (60%) reported TAs and 13 (26%) experienced SAs. Three flavors were rated highly with a liking score > 6 (CRF 6.8 ± 1.7; N 6.5 ± 1.9; HTG 6.0 ± 2.0). Larger variation in ONS liking scores was observed in patients with TAs with or without SAs (4.5-6.9 and 4.6-7.2, respectively) vs. patients without TAs (5.9-6.5). TAs were associated with increased liking of CRF (Δ = + 0.9) and N (Δ = + 1.0) flavors. CONCLUSIONS TAs and SAs are common in patients with cancer undergoing systemic antitumor therapy. Patients with TAs were more discriminant in liking of ONS flavors compared to patients without TAs, and sensory-adapted flavors appeared to be appreciated. The presence of TAs should be considered when developing or selecting ONS for patients with cancer. TRIAL REGISTRATION Registration at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03525236) on 26 April 2018.

Abstract
BACKGROUND For patients with breast cancer treated with certain chemotherapy regimens, taste disorders associated with those regimens can negatively affect quality of life. OBJECTIVES This study evaluated the effects of taste disorder-related education on meal satisfaction and sense of taste in Japanese women with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS A sample of 53 newly diagnosed women with breast cancer scheduled for chemotherapy treatment were randomly assigned to the control or intervention (nurse-provided education about chemotherapy-associated taste disorders) group. Meal satisfaction and sense of taste were assessed using a visual analog scale. FINDINGS The proportions of patients with meal dissatisfaction and impaired sense of taste were lower in the intervention group than in the control group. Although meal dissatisfaction and impaired sense of taste recovered in the intervention group two months after protocol completion, they did not recover in the control group. Providing education to women with breast cancer scheduled for chemotherapy treatment can affect patients' experience of treatment-associated taste disorders.

Abstract
Individuals undergoing treatment for cancer can experience changes in taste or smell that are often assumed to affect constructs related to food behavior, although this relationship is rarely measured directly. To ascertain the extent to which measured changes in taste and smell during and after cancer treatment affect food behavior, we conducted a scoping review and completed a comparative analysis for studies that met our criteria, which were: they directly measured cancer patients' (a) psychophysical response to taste and/or olfactory stimuli, and (b) food behavior (including food enjoyment, food preference, dietary intake) in people affected by cancer. Eleven studies met these criteria and were included in the review. All 11 studies evaluated taste and five also measured smell. A comparative analysis exploring taste and food behavior shows that a reduced sweet taste function (decreased sensitivity) was associated with a reduced intake of a variety of different macro and micro nutrients, reduced appetite, and overall lower energy intake. One out of six studies that measured smell and food measured observed changes in olfactory function following cancer treatment. There were no significant relationships reported between olfactory measures and food behavior. Taste changes that arise from cancer treatment appear to have a direct effect on food behavior, although there is a need for more research using standardized measures and larger sample sizes. A better understanding of taste alterations and their implications for dietary intake and food enjoyment will support optimal nutritional health by identifying strategies to help patients eat well during and after cancer treatment.

Abstract
Food selection plays a pivotal role in maintaining adequate nutrient intake, thus elucidating drivers of food choice is a meaningful strategy to maintain health and manage disease. Taste and smell are key determinants of food choice and warrant careful consideration. In this review, we first discuss how sensory stimulation influences food selection and metabolism. We then review the evidence regarding the relationship between taste and smell dysfunction and food preferences and selection, with attention given to contexts of certain chronic diseases. We conclude with brief recommendations for the management of chemosensory disorders. While sensory abilities influence food selection, the effect of taste and smell dysfunction on long-term consumption patterns and health status must be considered in light of environment, exposure, and culture.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of the study was to assess self-reported taste and smell perception after chemotherapy in breast cancer patients compared with women without cancer, and to assess whether taste and smell perception is associated with quality of life after the end of chemotherapy. Methods We included 135 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients who completed chemotherapy and 114 women without cancer. Questionnaires on taste, smell, and quality of life were completed shortly after and 6 months after chemotherapy (patients) or at two moments with 6 months’ time window in between (comparisons). Results Self-reported taste and smell perception were significantly lower in patients shortly after chemotherapy compared to the comparison group. Most patients recovered 6 months after chemotherapy, although patients who were still receiving trastuzumab then reported a lower taste and smell perception compared to patients who were not. A lower self-reported taste and smell were statistically significantly associated with a worse quality of life, social, emotional, and role functioning shortly after chemotherapy. Six months after chemotherapy, taste and smell were statistically significantly associated with quality of life, social and role functioning, but only in patients receiving trastuzumab. Conclusions Most taste and smell alterations recovered within 6 months after the end of chemotherapy for breast cancer, but not for patients receiving trastuzumab. These results highlight the importance of monitoring taste and smell alterations during and after treatment with chemotherapy and trastuzumab, as they may impact quality of life.

Abstract
Taste and smell alterations have been recognized as common symptoms in relation to various cancers. However, previous research suggests that patients do not receive sufficient support in managing taste and smell alterations. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate how persons with experience from lung cancer-related taste and smell alterations reason about resources and strategies offered and used to manage these symptoms. Data from semi-structured individual interviews with 13 women and four men were analyzed with qualitative content analysis. We used Kleinman’s now classic medical anthropological model of local health care systems, consisting of the personal, professional, and folk sector, to interpret and understand how people respond to sickness experiences in their daily lives. By presenting the findings using this model, we demonstrate that most strategies for dealing with taste and smell alterations were undertaken in the personal sector, i.e. in participants’ daily lives, on an individual level and in interaction with family, social networks and communities. Taste and smell alterations implied two overarching challenges: 1) adjusting to no longer being able to trust information provided by one’s own senses of taste and/or smell, and 2) coming to terms with taste and smell alterations as a part of having lung cancer. Health care professionals’ involvement was described as limited, but appeared to fulfil most participants’ expectations. However, through provision of normalizing information, practical advice, and to some extent, emotional support, health care professionals had potential to influence strategies and resources used for dealing with taste and smell alterations. With this study, we further the understanding of how people deal with lung cancer-related taste and smell alterations and discuss the role of health care professionals for this process.

Abstract
Testicular cancer is the most frequent malignant disease in young males between 15 and 35 years. Platinum based chemotherapy regimen is the therapy of choice in advanced disease. This treatment has also adverse effects caused by the cytostatic active substances, such as olfactory dysfunctions. The aim of this study was, therefore, to monitor olfactory function of testicular cancer patients during and 6 months after chemotherapy. A total of 17 patients (mean age 31.06 ± 10.26 years), which underwent chemotherapy (mean 2.47 cycles ± 0.5) were enrolled in this study. Odor threshold, discrimination and identification were assessed by means of the "Sniffin' Sticks" prior to and on day 42, 90 and 180 after chemotherapy has been completed. Furthermore, patients' ratings of olfactory function and depressive symptoms were evaluated. Threshold scores were significantly lower on day 90 (8.0 ± 2.51) compared to baseline (10.4 ± 2.20) (p = 0.014) and recovered almost completely on day 180 (9.65 ± 3.26). Odor discrimination and identification did not show significant changes during therapy. The decrease of the olfactory function during/immediately after chemotherapy was underlined by the subjectively perceived impaired olfactory function during this time. In addition almost every fourth patient presented with a depressed mood at the beginning of chemotherapy. Patients should be informed about possible transient olfactory impairment during/immediately after chemotherapy.
