Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS We aimed to clarify the relationship between alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level and body composition in Japanese medical health checkups, especially in cases with ALT ≤ 30 IU/L (7569 men and 9497 women). METHODS We categorized our study cohort into four groups: type A (ALT value ≤ 10 IU/L), type B (11 ≤ ALT value ≤ 20 IU/L), type C (21 ≤ ALT value ≤ 30 IU/L) and type D (ALT value > 30 IU/L (ALT over 30)). We retrospectively compared body composition-related parameters (body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), fat (F) index, fatty liver index (FLI), fat-free (FF) index and F-FF ratio) among the four types. RESULTS Type A/B/C/D in men and women was found in 262/3279/2107/1921 and 1549/5736/1495/717 (p < 0.0001). BMI, WC, F-index, FLI, FF index and F-FF ratio were all significantly stratified among the four types, regardless of whether they were male or female and over or under 50 years old. CONCLUSIONS With a decrease in ALT level in medical health checkups, fat mass decreases, and F-FF ratio decreases, but a decrease in skeletal muscle mass cannot be overlooked.

Abstract
Introduction During pregnancy, women experience metabolic changes that may induce insulin resistance, which can be traced to the blood glucose levels A number of factors may intervene in the metabolism of glucose in pregnant women; one of them is body composition. This factor is useful for studying metabolic diseases, for which the identification of the fat mass/muscle mass index (FMMMI) considered an especially relevant factor. Owing to their nature, techniques such as bioimpedance have been sparsely used for analysis during pregnancy. Aim This study aimed to identify the relationship between fat mass / muscle mass index and glucose metabolism in pregnant women. Methods This descriptive cross-sectional study included 231 women between the ages of 18 and 35 years and 24-28 weeks of gestation, who attended a state hospital for regular check-ups and exhibited risk factors for the development of gestational diabetes (GD) according to the Current Practice Guidelines in Primary Care. The participants underwent a physical examination, anthropometric measurements bio impedance were obtained, and oral glucose tolerance curves were constructed. FMMMI was calculated. Results The prevalence of gestational diabetes was observed to be 13.4%. Women with a GD diagnosis had a significantly higher FMMMI than in those with no GD (0.746 ± 0.168 vs 0.567 ± 0.167;p < 0.005). The assessment of the FMMMI tertiles revealed that GD prevalence was higher in tertile 3 than in tertiles 1 and 2 (tertile 1: 2.6%; tertile 2: 9.1%; tertile 3: 24%). Conclusion FMMMI is associated with glucose tolerance test response in pregnant women and a higher prevalence of GD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) affects many populations, and screening out the high-risk populations at an early stage is a challenge. As a sarcopenia index, the relationship between creatinine to cystatin C ratio (CCR) and MASLD remains unclear. This cross-sectional, prospective study aimed to explore the relationship between CCR and MASLD. Design Firstly, explored the correlation between CCR and MASLD in cross-sectional analyses. Then excluded the population with baseeline diagnosis of MASLD and analyzed the association with baseline CCR levels and the onset of MASLD in the population with available follow-up data. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) to evaluate the association between CCR levels and MASLD. PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENTS This study included 368,634 participants from the UK Biobank for cross-sectional and prospective analyses. The demographic characteristics and laboratory measurements of all participants were obtained from the UK Biobank. MASLD was diagnosed according to the multi-society consensus nomenclature. Hepatic steatosis was defined as FLI ≥60. RESULTS We grouped the study participants according to CCR tertiles. In cross-sectional analyses, participants in CCR tertile 1 had the highest MASLD risk (OR: 1.070, 95% CI: 1.053-1.088, p < .001). And the similar association was observed in the prospective analyses (CCR tertile 1 OR: 1.340, 95% CI: 1.077-1.660, p = .009; CCR tertile 2 OR: 1.217, 95% CI: 1.021-1.450, p = .029, respectively). After stratification by gender, the significant association between CCR and the onset of MASLD was only observed in males (CCR tertile 1 OR: 1.639, 95% CI: 1.160-2.317, p = .005; CCR tertile 2 OR: 1.322, 95% CI: 1.073-1.628, p = .005, respectively). CONCLUSION Our results indicated that lower CCR was significantly associated with higher risk of MASLD, based on which predictive models can be developed to screen populations at high risk of developing MASLD.

Abstract
We sought to investigate the relationship between insulin resistance (IR) and body composition as assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis in Japanese health check-up recipients (1186 men and 1441 women). IR was defined as a Homeostasis Model Assessment of IR (HOMA-IR) ≥ 2.5. In body-composition-related parameters, the fat mass index (F index) was defined as fat mass divided by the height squared (kg/m2). The fat-free mass index (FF index) was defined as fat-free mass divided by the height squared (kg/m2). The F index to FF index ratio (F-FF ratio) was defined as the F index divided by the FF index. Factors related to HOMA-IR were examined. The median HOMA-IR was 1.54 in men and 1.30 in women (p < 0.0001). The median F index was 4.9 kg/m2 in men and 6.1 kg/m2 in women (p < 0.0001). The median FF index was 18.2 kg/m2 in men and 15.1 kg/m2 in women (p < 0.0001). The median F-FF ratio was 0.272 in men and 0.405 in women (p < 0.0001). The F-FF ratio was an independent factor associated with HOMA-IR in the multivariate analysis in both genders, while the F index and FF index were not in both genders. In conclusion, fat and skeletal muscle balance can be controlled by IR in Japanese adults.

Abstract
Background Low muscle mass disproportionately affects people with coronary heart disease compared to healthy controls but is under-researched and insufficiently treated. Inflammation, poor nutrition, and neural decline might contribute to low muscle mass. This study aimed to assess circulatory biomarkers related to these mechanisms [albumin, transthyretin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and C-terminal agrin fragment] and their relationship with muscle mass in people with coronary heart disease. Our findings could be beneficial to indicate mechanisms of sarcopenia, detect sarcopenia, and evaluate treatment. Methods Serum blood samples from people with coronary heart disease were analysed for biomarker concentrations using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Skeletal muscle mass was estimated using dual X-ray absorptiometry derived appendicular lean mass and reported as skeletal muscle index (SMI; kg m-2), and as a proportion of total body mass [appendicular skeletal mass (ASM%)]. Low muscle mass was defined as a SMI <7.0 and <6.0 kg m-2, or ASM% <25.72 and <19.43% for men and women, respectively. Associations between biomarkers and lean mass were adjusted for age and inflammation. Results Sixty-four people were assessed; 14 (21.9%) had low muscle mass. People with low muscle mass had lower transthyretin (effect size 0.34, p = 0.007), ALT (effect size 0.34, p = 0.008), and AST (effect size 0.26, p = 0.037) concentrations, compared to those with normal muscle mass. SMI was associated with inflammation-corrected ALT (r = 0.261, p = 0.039) and with inflammation- and age-adjusted AST/ALT ratio (r = -0.257, p = 0.044). Albumin and C-terminal agrin fragment were not associated with muscle mass indices. Conclusion Circulatory transthyretin, ALT and AST were associated with low muscle mass in people with coronary heart disease. Low concentrations of these biomarkers might indicate that low muscle mass is partially explained by poor nutrition and high inflammation in this cohort. Targeted treatments to address these factors could be considered for people with coronary heart disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE Creatinine to body weight (Cre/BW) ratio is considered the independent risk factor for incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but research on this relationship is limited. The relationship between the Cre/BW ratio and T2DM among Chinse individuals is still ambiguous. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between the Cre/BW ratio and the risk of T2DM in the Chinese population. METHODS This is a retrospective cohort study from a prospectively collected database. We included a total of 200,658 adults free of T2DM at baseline. The risk of incident T2DM according to Cre/BW ratio was estimated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models, and a two-piece wise linear regression model was developed to find out the threshold effect. RESULTS With a median follow-up of 3.13 ± 0.94 years, a total of 4001 (1.99%) participants developed T2DM. Overall, there was an L-shaped relation of Cre/BW ratio with the risk of incident T2DM (P for non-linearity < 0.001). When the Cre/BW ratio (× 100) was less than 0.86, the risk of T2DM decreased significantly as the Cre/BW ratio increased [0.01 (0.00, 0.10), P < 0.001]. When the Cre/BW ratio (× 100) was between 0.86 and 1.36, the reduction in the risk of developing T2DM was not as significant as before [0.22 (0.12, 0.38), P < 0.001]. In contrast, when the Cre/BW ratio (× 100) was greater than 1.36, the reduction in T2DM incidence became significantly flatter than before [0.73 (0.29,1.8), P = 0.49]. CONCLUSION There was an L-shaped relation of Cre/BW ratio with incidence of T2DM in general Chinese adults. A negative curvilinear association between Cre/BW ratio and incident T2DM was present, with a saturation effect predicted at 0.86 and 1.36 of Cre/BW ratio (× 100).

Abstract
We evaluated the feasibility of using serum creatinine-to-cystatin C ratio in the assessments of muscle mass and strength in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In a community-based cross-sectional study, skeletal muscle mass and handgrip strength were assessed in 641 Japanese adults. Low skeletal muscle mass index and low handgrip strength were defined as indicated in the sarcopenia diagnostic criteria of the Japan Society of Hepatology. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease was defined as fatty liver on ultrasonography in the absence of other causes of steatosis. The creatinine-to-cystatin C ratio was useful for identifying the participants with low skeletal muscle mass index, with an area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve of 0.84 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.77–0.91] in men and 0.72 in women (95% CI, 0.65–0.78), and those with low handgrip strength, with an area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve of 0.96 (95% CI, 0.93–0.99) in men and 0.79 (95% CI, 0.66–0.92) in women. Moreover, the creatinine-to-cystatin C ratio correlated with skeletal muscle mass index (r = 0.511, p<0.001) and handgrip strength (r = 0.657, p<0.001), whereas it did not correlate with exacerbation of hepatic steatosis. In this study, creatinine-to-cystatin C ratio correlated with muscle mass and strength in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease regardless of hepatic steatosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association between muscle mass depletion and compromising of the cell membrane integrity and clinical-anthropometric characteristics in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. METHODS This observational study evaluated waist circumference, body mass index, and waist-to-height ratio in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Skeletal mass index corrected by weight and impairment of cell membrane integrity were assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis. RESULTS In 56 patients, muscle mass depletion was observed in 62.5% and cell membrane impairment in 28.6%. The metabolic syndrome and elevated aspartate aminotransferase were the only clinical factors associated with mass depletion (p<0.05). The linear regression analysis showed association between skeletal mass index and waist-to-height ratio and waist circumference, after adjustments (p<0.05). The phase angle value was not different between those with and without mass depletion, and also it did not have correlation with skeletal mass index and clinical parameters (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of mass depletion and cell membrane impairment was higher in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The muscle mass depletion was associated with central obesity, aspartate aminotransferase elevated, and metabolic syndrome; however, the phase angle is not associated with clinical and anthropometric data.

Abstract
AIM Qualitative body composition (BC) change, characterized by the combination of visceral fat gain and muscle loss, is drawing attention as a risk factor for fatty liver (FL). The present study aimed to describe trends in BC change and its association with FL in the Japanese population. METHODS Data from medical checkups carried out on 56 639 Japanese participants every 5 years from 1997 to 2017 were analyzed. Fat mass index (FMI) and fat-free mass index (FFMI) were calculated using body mass index and body fat percentage. Subjects were divided into two groups according to deviations from the correlation line of FMI and FFMI as the reference: FMI-predominant BC and FFM-dominant BC. Fatty liver was determined using abdominal ultrasonography. RESULTS The prevalence of FL significantly increased from 27.3% to 42.7% in men and from 18.0% to 25.5% in women. The prevalence of FMI predominance significantly increased from 33.6% to 43.9% in men and from 29.1% to 47.0% in women. Fat mass index predominance was independently associated with FL in men and women (odds ratio: 1.96 and 1.94, respectively). Serum blood urea nitrogen level was inversely associated with FL in men and women (0.958 and 0.961, respectively) and significantly decreased from 15.8 to 14.9 mg/dl in men and from 15.1 to 14.0 mg/dl in women. CONCLUSIONS Increasing FMI-predominant BC and decreasing serum blood urea nitrogen level could account for the increase in the prevalence of FL over 20 years. We believe that these factors stem from current lifestyle habits in Japan.

Abstract
Background Causes of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and its progression include visceral fat accumulation and loss of muscle mass; however, which of the two phenomena is more critical is unclear. Therefore, we intended to examine the relationship between body composition and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease progression as indicated by fibrosis and the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease activity score. Methods This cross-sectional study comprised 149 patients (55 men; age, 20–76 years) treated for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease between December 2010 and January 2020. Body composition measurements, histological examinations of liver samples, and comprehensive blood chemistry tests were performed. The relationship between body composition and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease histology findings was analyzed using the logistic regression model. Results Fibrosis was significantly and inversely correlated with muscle mass and appendicular skeletal muscle mass and significantly and positively correlated with fat mass, fat mass/height squared, visceral fat area, and waist-hip ratio (P < 0.05). After adjustment for sex, blood chemistry measurements, and body composition indices, fibrosis remained associated with appendicular skeletal muscle mass, fat mass, fat mass/height squared, and visceral fat area (P < 0.05). Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease activity score ≥ 5 significantly correlated with fat mass and fat mass/height squared in a univariate but not multivariate analysis. Conclusions Fibrosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, an indicator of unfavorable long-term outcomes, is associated with more indices of fat mass than of those of muscle mass. Hence, fat mass should be controlled to prevent non-alcoholic fatty liver disease progression. Abstract
Background The simultaneous assessment of visceral adiposity and muscle mass might be useful to monitor the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) progression in large population. We aimed to investigate the value of serum creatinine-to-cystatin C ratio (CCR) in evaluating these two parameters and predicting liver steatosis and fibrosis. Methods 154 overweight/obese inpatients (49 males, 105 females) scheduled for bariatric surgery and 49 non-overweight/obese volunteers (18 males, 31 females) responded to the hospital advertisement were involved in the cross-sectional study. Liver steatosis and fibrosis were diagnosed with transient elastography (TE). The psoas muscle area (PMA) and visceral fat area (VFA) were measured using magnetic resonance imaging. Results The body mass index, insulin resistance, and lipid profiles showed significant differences between the CCR tertiles. Multiple regression analyses revealed that the CCR was significantly associated with the controlled attenuation parameter (β = −0.30, P = 0.006 in males; β = −0.19, P = 0.017 in females) and liver stiffness measurements in males (β = −0.246, P = 0.044). A low CCR was associated with moderate-to-severe steatosis (P < 0.001), significant liver fibrosis (P < 0.01), and excellent predictive power for these two conditions (P < 0.01). The CCR had a negative correlation with the VFA/PMA ratio (r = −0.584, P < 0.001 in males; r = −0.569, P < 0.001 in females). Conclusions The CCR is a serum marker for muscle-adjusted visceral fat mass, and a low CCR is associated with an increased risk of progressive NAFLD.

Abstract
There are no reports regarding the efficacy of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) and dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor (DPP4i) administrations in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients without type 2 diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of those drugs in such patients. NAFLD patients without type 2 diabetes mellitus were enrolled in this single center double-blind randomized prospective study, and allocated to receive either dapagliflozin (SGLT2i) or teneligliptin (DPP4i) for 12 weeks. Laboratory variables and body compositions were assessed at the baseline and end of treatment. The primary endpoint was alanine aminotransferase (ALT) reduction level at the end of treatment. Twenty-two eligible patients (dapagliflozin group, n = 12; teneligliptin group, n = 10) were analyzed. In both groups, the serum concentration of ALT was significantly decreased after treatment (p<0.05). Multiple regression analysis results showed that decreased body weight of patients with dapagliflozin administration was significantly related to changes in total body water and body fat mass. Administration of dapagliflozin or teneligliptin decreased the serum concentration of ALT in NAFLD patients without type 2 diabetes mellitus. With dapagliflozin, body weight decreased, which was related to changes in total body water and body fat mass (UMIN000027304).

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study evaluated the associations of the fat-to-muscle ratio (FMR) with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and insulin resistance (IR) in Korean adults using nationally representative survey data. METHODS A two-stage stratified sampling method was reflected in a cross-sectional study involving a total of 13 032 participants aged ≥ 19 years who participated in the fourth and fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. The homeostasis model assessment for IR (HOMA-IR) was used to evaluate IR and was calculated as follows: [fasting plasma glucose level (mg/dL) × fasting plasma insulin level (uIU/mL)]/405. MetS was defined using the 2006 International Diabetes Federation criteria, and FMR was measured using whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and calculated as follows: total fat mass (kg) divided by total lean mass (kg). In addition, the optimal FMR cut-off values for detecting MetS and the odds ratios (ORs) for MetS risk were determined according to the FMR quartile and sex. RESULTS Among all participants, the proportion of women was 58.4%, and the mean age was 44.22 ± 0.26 years. The FMR significantly differed between men and women (0.30 ± 0.002 vs. 0.53 ± 0.003, respectively, P < 0.001), and the prevalence of MetS and IR gradually increased as FMR increased (P for trend: <0.001). The optimal FMR cut-off value for detecting MetS was higher in women than in men (0.555 vs. 0.336, respectively). The negative predictive value was the highest in normal-weight participants (0.9992 in women and 0.9986 in men), while the positive predictive value was the highest in obese participants (0.5994 in women and 0.5428 in men). Based on the derived cut-off FMR, a high FMR was associated with poor outcomes in terms of cardiometabolic risk markers (P < 0.001). The multivariable-adjusted ORs for MetS, abdominal obesity, and IR (HOMA-IR ≥ 3) were 5.35 [95% confidence interval (CI): 4.39-6.52], 7.67 (95% CI: 6.33-9.30), and 3.25 (95% CI: 2.70-3.92), respectively, in men and 5.59 (95% CI: 4.66-6.72), 7.48 (95% CI: 6.35-8.82), and 2.55 (95% CI: 2.17-3.00), respectively, in women. CONCLUSIONS In the present study, a high FMR was significantly associated with the prevalence of MetS and IR. The present findings also showed that FMR can be a novel indicator for detecting the absence or presence of MetS, particularly in metabolically healthy normal-weight individuals and metabolically obese obese-weight individuals.

Abstract
We investigated the association between creatinine to body weight (Cre/BW) ratio and incident diabetes. In this cohort study, 9659 men and 7417 women were follow up mean (SD) 5.6 (3.5) years and 5.4 (3.4) years, respectively. For men, tertile 1 (T1; n = 3176), Cre/BW < 0.01275; tertile 2 (T2; n = 3258), 0.01275 ≤ Cre/BW < 0.0148; and tertile 3 (T3; n = 3225), Cre/BW ≥ 0.0148; and for women, T1 (n = 2437), Cre/BMI < 0.0118; T2 (n = 2516), 0.0118 ≤ Cre/BMI < 0.014; and T3 (n = 2477), Cre/BMI ≥ 0.014. Among them, 362 men and 102 women developed diabetes. The hazard ratios (HRs) of incident diabetes in the T2 group was 0.56 (95% CI 0.44–0.71, p < 0.001) in men and 0.61 (0.38–0.99, p = 0.045) in women and in the T3 group was 0.42 (0.32–0.54, p < 0.001) in men and 0.55 (0.34–0.89, p = 0.014) in women after adjusting for covariates, compared with the T1 group. Moreover, Δ0.001 incremental of Cre/BW is negatively associated with incident diabetes (adjusted HR 0.84, 95% CI 0.80–0.88, p < 0.001 for men and 0.88, 0.81–0.96, p = 0.003 for women). In conclusion, Cre/BW ratio is inversely related to incident diabetes. Checking Cre/BW ratios may predict future diabetes risks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors increase urinary glucose excretion and reduce visceral adiposity and body weight, but their efficacy on patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease has not been sufficiently investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors on liver fat mass and body composition in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 17 patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes who received sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors between November 2016 and July 2017. Changes in liver fat, subcutaneous and visceral fat, body composition, and liver function-related parameters were assessed after 24 weeks of sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor treatment and compared to baseline values. RESULTS Ten patients received dapagliflozin at 5 mg/day and seven patients received canagliflozin at 100 mg/day for 24 weeks. All patients completed the study without any serious adverse effects and achieved body weight loss and improved glycated hemoglobin levels. Liver fat mass evaluated by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy was significantly reduced (19.1% vs. 9.2%, p < 0.01), and so were both subcutaneous and visceral fat mass. The body fat/body weight ratio decreased, whereas the skeletal muscle mass/body weight ratio increased. Liver function (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase) improved significantly. CONCLUSIONS Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor treatment not only improved glycemic control but also reduced liver fat mass in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes. Body weight loss was primarily attributable to a reduction in fat mass, especially visceral fat. Thus, sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors could potentially serve as a therapeutic agent for patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is diagnosed with the skeletal muscle index (SMI) or the sarcopenia index (SI). We previously reported that the ratio of skeletal muscle mass to body fat mass (SF ratio) was a novel index of sarcopenia in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate sarcopenia with these indices in patients with NAFLD. METHODS One hundred and fifty-six consecutive patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) >40 IU/L were enrolled. Liver function and body composition were evaluated in 121 patients after 12 months. We evaluated the relationship between histological findings, changes in liver function, and the SMI, SI, and SF ratio. RESULTS Of the 156 patients enrolled, 13.5% and 26.3% were diagnosed with sarcopenia with the SMI and SI. In patients with hepatic fibrosis stage <2, the SI and the SF ratio were significantly greater than in patients with fibrosis stage ≥2. There was no difference in SMI between groups. In the cohort assessed at baseline and 12 months later, transaminase activity and SMI decreased significantly, and the SF ratio increased over time. A multivariate analysis revealed the presence of the PNPLA3 G allele and an increase in SF ratio (odds ratio, 7.406) as predictive factors of ALT reduction >30% from baseline. CONCLUSIONS Due to the high prevalence of obesity, we should consider both skeletal muscle mass and body fat mass in the diagnosis and treatment of NAFLD. The SF ratio could be a useful index in sarcopenic NAFLD.

Abstract
Obesity is a risk factor for many health issues, as are metabolic abnormalities. However, few studies have addressed the associations between obesity/metabolic risk phenotypes and dietary macronutrient intakes (carbohydrate, protein, and fat). Therefore, this study examined the associations between macronutrient intakes and obesity/metabolic risk phenotypes in a Korean population. We used data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a cross-sectional survey of Korean civilians, conducted in 2014 and 2016, and data on a total of 7374 participants were analyzed. Macronutrient intakes were defined as the proportions of energy derived from carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Those exhibiting obesity/metabolic risk phenotypes (or not) were divided into four groups: normal weight without metabolic abnormalities; obese without metabolic abnormalities; normal weight with metabolic abnormalities; and obese with metabolic abnormalities. After adjusting for age, smoking status, alcohol consumption, extent of physical activity, household income, and daily fiber intake, no association was found between the proportions of carbohydrate, protein, or fat intakes and obesity/metabolic risk phenotypes except for a positive association between metabolically healthy but obese status and low protein intake in females. Further studies are required to evaluate the effects of macronutrient intakes on obesity/metabolic risk phenotypes and associated health outcomes.
