Abstract
Simple and sensitive electrochemical sensors were fabricated from cerium oxide (CeO2) and copper-benzene tricarboxylic acid-modified cerium oxide (CeO2-Cu-BTC) materials for differential pulse voltammetric analysis of toxic cadmium (Cd) ions in aqueous solutions. The materials were prepared by hydrothermal method and structurally characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The CeO2-modified carbon paste electrode (CeCPE) and the CeO2-Cu-BTC-modified carbon paste electrode (CeBCPE) were electrochemically characterized by their cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance study in standard K3[Fe(CN)6] single-electron redox process. Their electrochemical surface areas, electrode surface coverages, and charge transfer resistances were calculated to be 1.46 cm2, 2.338 × 10-5 mol∙cm-2, and 2790 Ω and 5.48 cm2, 2.476 × 10-5 mol∙cm-2, and 1254.65 Ω for CeCPE and CeBCPE, respectively. These fabricated electrodes were used as electrochemical sensors for cadmium ion estimation by optimizing the experimental parameters through differential pulse voltammetry. The optimized conditions included 10% modifier for CeCPE and 5% modifier for CeBCPE in 0.12 M HCl solution of pH 5 as supporting electrolyte at - 1.2 V deposition for 30 s in 0.01 to 10 mg L-1 linear cadmium solution range. Under these conditions, the limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.368 mg L-1 and 0.005 mg L-1 was calculated for CeCPE and CeBCPE electrodes, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 0.121 mg L-1 and 0.002 mg L-1 for CeCPE and CeBCPE, respectively. All the experimental results indicated that electrodes fabricated from CeO2-Cu-BTC show better performance as compared to CeO2-based electrodes. Both these types of electrochemical sensors presented good repeatability and performance in the presence of interfering ions as well. From these findings, it can also be inferred that these electrochemical sensors can provide a simple and very sensitive method for approximation of toxic cadmium ions in aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Molecular recognition has been described as the “ultimate” form of sensing and plays a fundamental role in biological processes. There is a move towards biomimetic recognition elements to overcome inherent problems of natural receptors such as limited stability, high-cost, and variation in response. In recent years, several alternatives have emerged which have found their first commercial applications. In this review, we focus on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) since they present an attractive alternative due to recent breakthroughs in polymer science and nanotechnology. For example, innovative solid-phase synthesis methods can produce MIPs with sometimes greater affinities than natural receptors. Although industry and environmental agencies require sensors for continuous monitoring, the regulatory barrier for employing MIP-based sensors is still low for environmental applications. Despite this, there are currently no sensors in this area, which is likely due to low profitability and the need for new legislation to promote the development of MIP-based sensors for pollutant and heavy metal monitoring. The increased demand for point-of-use devices and home testing kits is driving an exponential growth in biosensor production, leading to an expected market value of over GPB 25 billion by 2023. A key requirement of point-of-use devices is portability, since the test must be conducted at “the time and place” to pinpoint sources of contamination in food and/or water samples. Therefore, this review will focus on MIP-based sensors for monitoring pollutants and heavy metals by critically evaluating relevant literature sources from 1993 to 2022.

Abstract
Cadmium belongs to the group of potentially toxic metals that have high health and environmental significance. Due to its adverse effects on the environment, this study develops an effective electrochemical sensor for detecting a polyaniline-multiwalled carbon nanotube-3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (PANI-MWCNT-APTES) substrate cast on the GCE. The as-prepared PANI-MWCNT-APTES was prepared by a wet chemical method, and its formation was investigated using several techniques. As a result, the prepared material exhibited a limit of detection of 0.015 µM for cadmium ions (Cd2+) in the linear dynamic range of 0.05 µM to 50 µM. Furthermore, the PANI-MWCNT-APTES-modified GCE current response was stable, repeatable, reproducible, and short. In addition, PANI-MWCNT-APTES/GCE was harnessed for the first time for cadmium detection in real water samples, and the result was satisfactory. Therefore, the recorded results suggest that the newly designed PANI-MWCNT-APTES is a promising material for detecting Cd in the near future for human health and environmental protection.

The selective recognition mechanism of a novel highly hydrophobic ion-imprinted polymer towards Cd(ii) and its application in edible vegetable oil. RSC Adv 2021; 11:34487-34497. Abstract
Edible vegetable oils are easily contaminated by heavy metals, resulting in the oxidative degradation of oils and various health effects on humans. Therefore, it is very important to develop a rapid and efficient method to extract trace heavy metals from vegetable oils. In this work, a highly hydrophobic ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) was synthesized on a novel raspberry (RS)-like particle surface. The synthesized IIP@RS was characterized and used in solid-phase extraction (SPE) for the selective and fast adsorption of Cd(ii) from vegetable oils. The results showed that IIP was successfully coated onto RS particles with a high specific surface area (458.7 m2 g−1) and uniform porous structure. The contact angle (θ) value (141.8°) of IIP@RS was close to the critical value of super-hydrophobic materials, which is beneficial to their adsorption in hydrophobic vegetable oils. The IIP@RS also exhibited excellent adsorption ability and selectivity to Cd(ii) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 36.62 mg g−1, imprinting factor of 4.31 and equilibrium adsorption rate of 30 min. According to isothermal titration calorimetry results, the recognition behavior of IIP@RS for Cd(ii) was mainly contributed by Cd(ii)-induced cavities during gel formation and coordination between Cd(ii) and –SH groups in imprinted cavities. Furthermore, the adsorption process driven by entropy and enthalpy was spontaneous at all temperatures. In real vegetable oil samples, IIP@RS-SPE adsorbed approximately 96.5–115.8% of Cd(ii) with a detection limit of 0.62 μg L−1. Therefore, IIP@RS has wide application prospects in enriching and detecting Cd(ii) from vegetable oil. Edible vegetable oils are easily contaminated by heavy metals, resulting in the oxidative degradation of oils and various health effects on humans.![]()

Abstract
Heavy metal ions (HMIs) pollution is always a serious issue worldwide. Therefore, monitoring HMIs in environmental water is an important and challenging step to ensure environmental health and human safety. In this study, we spotlight an effortless, single-step in-situ electrochemical polymerization deposition technique to fabricate a novel, low-cost, efficient, nano-engineered poly(melamine)/graphitic-carbon nitride nanonetwork (PM/g-C3N4) modified screen-printed carbon electrode (SPE) for sensitive, selective, and simultaneous electrochemical monitoring of toxic HMIs in environmental waters. g-C3N4 nanomaterial was prepared using melamine as a precursor via pyrolysis technique. As-prepared g-C3N4 and melamine monomer were electrochemically in-situ polymerized/deposited over pre-anodized SPE (ASPE) using cyclic voltammetry technique. XRD, XPS, and SEM were engaged to characterize the developed electrode. The fabricated PM/g-C3N4/ASPE was applied as an environmental sensor to selective and simultaneous electrochemical detection of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions using differential pulse voltammetry technique. The developed sensor displayed excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Pb2+ and Cd2+ with limit of detections of 0.008 µM and 0.02 µM, respectively. The fabricated PM/g-C3N4/ASPE sensor exhibits superior stability, repeatability, good anti-interference, and applicability for recognition of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions in real water samples. These results proved that developed environmental sensor is low-cost, efficient, practical platform for rapid, selective, simultaneous monitoring of HMIs in the environment.

Abstract
Among the toxic metals, cadmium is a very dangerous pollutant because it can extremely damage organs in humans and animals. This toxic metal is introduced into water from different industries such as metal plating, batteries, and alloys. Cadmium bioaccumulates in vital organs and unlike organic pollutants does not show any biological degradation. In this study, an electroactive self-assembled monolayer (SAM) was developed by covalent attachment of a novel mono aza-crown ether substituted catechol-terminated hexane dithiol onto the gold surface. The electrochemical behavior of the fabricated SAM electrode was investigated using voltammetry techniques and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The obtained results from voltammetric experiments revealed that the crown ether moiety of SAM forms a selective complex with cadmium ion. Under optimal conditions, Cd2+ could be detected in the range of 15 μM to 65 μM with a detection limit of 4.5 μM. Selectivity measurements reveal that the sensor is specific for Cd2+ even in the presence of high concentrations of other metal ions. The proposed sensor was applied to the determination of cadmium ion in water samples with high sensitivity and good selectivity.

Abstract
In the present study, a carbon paste electrode chemically modified with gold nanoparticles was used as a sensitive electrochemical sensor for determination of ochratoxin A. The differential pulse voltammetric method was employed to study the behavior of ochratoxin A on this modified electrode. The effect of variables such as percent of gold nanoparticles, pH of sample solution, accumulation potential and time on voltammogram peak current were optimized. The proposed electrode showed good oxidation response for ochratoxin A in 0.1 mol L(-1) PBS (pH 7.2) and the peak potential was about +0.8 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The peak current increased linearly with the ochratoxin A concentration in the range of 0.5-100 nM. The detection limit was found to be 0.2 nM and the relative standard deviation was 6.2 % (n = 7). The method has been applied to the determination of ochratoxin A in cereal derived products such as breakfast cereals, cereal-based baby foods and beer samples.

Abstract
Ion imprinting technology is one of the most promising tools in separation and purification sciences because of its high selectivity, good stability, simplicity and low cost. It has been mainly used for selective removal, preconcentration, sensing and few miscellaneous fields. In this review article, recent methodologies in the synthesis of IIPs have been discussed. For several applications, different parameters of IIP including complexing and leaching agent, pH, relative selectivity coefficient, detection limit and adsorption capacity have been evaluated and an attempt has been made to generalize. Biomedical applications mostly include selective removal of toxic metals from human blood plasma and urine samples. Wastewater treatment involves selective removal of highly toxic metal ions like Hg(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), As(V), etc. Preconcentration covers recovery of economically important metal ions such as gold, silver, platinum and palladium. It also includes selective preconcentration of lanthanides and actinides. In sensing, various IIP-based sensors have been fabricated for detection of toxic metal ions. This review article includes almost all metal ions based on the ion-imprinted polymer. At the end, the future outlook section presents the discussion on the advancement, corresponding merits and the need of continued research in few specific areas. Graphical Abstract IIPs for the selective monitoring of metals.

Abstract
The present research reports on the application of modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes as a new, easily prepared, and stable solid sorbent for the column preconcentration of ultra-trace amounts of cadmium in aqueous solution. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes were oxidized with concentrated HNO3 and modified with 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol and then were used as a solid phase for the column preconcentration of Cd(II). Elution was carried out with 0.5 mol L(-1) HNO3. The amount of eluted Cd(II) was measured using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. Various parameters such as pH, sample and eluent flow rate, eluent concentration, breakthrough volume, and interference of a great number of anions and cations on the retention of analyte on sorbent were studied. Under the optimized conditions, the calibration graph was linear in the range of 0.67 ng L(-1) to 5.0 μg L(-1) and the detection limit (3Sb, n = 7) was 0.14 ng L(-1) in initial solution. A preconcentration factor of 300 and relative standard deviations of ± 3.6 % for seven successive determinations of 3 ng of Cd(II) were achieved. The column preconcentration was successfully applied to the analysis of river water, waste water, and Persian Gulf water sample.
