Polypyrrole coated ZnO nanorods on platinum wire for solid-phase microextraction of amitraz and teflubenzuron pesticides prior to quantitation by GC-MS

Bacteria-templated ZIF-8 embedded in polyacrylonitrile nanofibers as a novel sorbent for thin film microextraction of benzoylurea insecticides

In the present work, the rod-like ZIF-8 (ZIF8@E coli) was prepared by fast, easy and environmentally friendly method of biomimetic mineralization with Escherichia coli bacteria as a bio-template and was exploited for the first time in the microextraction. In this regard, electrospun nanofiber mats of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and ZIF8@E coli were prepared by electrospinning method and used as a new sorbent for thin film microextraction (TFME) of benzoylurea insecticides such as Hexaflumuron and Teflubenzuron as model analytes. The PAN/ZIF8@E coli nanocomposite was characterized using electron scanning microscopy and various spectroscopy techniques. Factors affecting the proposed extraction method were screened and optimized using the experiment design strategy. Then, the model analytes were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet (UV) detector after microextraction. Satisfactory figures of merit were obtained for suggested TFME-HPLC-UV under optimum conditions. The suitable linearity varied in the range of 0.5-200 μg L-1 with R2 greater than 0.9968. The limit of detections for Hexaflumuron and Teflubenzuron were 0.12 and 0.15 μg L-1, respectively. The application of the method in the real sample was investigated by analyzing the selected analytes in environmental water and food samples. The spiking recovery of the selected analytes varied in the range of 93.0-109.8 % (RSD≤7.68). The results confirm the efficient application of this new sorbent in TFME approach. Considering the high availability, ease of production, and environmental friendliness of bacteria along with the significant improvement of metal-organic framework (MOF) growth efficiency, biomimetic mineralization is expected to be efficient method for the synthesis of ordered MOFs for use in extraction fields.

Rapid colorimetric determination of the pesticides carbofuran and dichlorvos by exploiting their inhibitory effect on the aggregation of peroxidase-mimicking platinum nanoparticles

A novel and highly sensitive enzyme inhibition assay was developed for the rapid detection of the organophosphate pesticide dichlorvos and the carbamate pesticide carbofuran. It achieves signal amplification by the secondary catalysis of platinum nanoparticles. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is capable of catalyzing the hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine to form thiocholine. Thiocholine causes the aggregation of citrate-capped platinum nanoparticles which then lose their peroxidase-mimicking properties. After addition of pesticides, the activity of AChE is inhibited, less thiocholine is produced, less aggregation occurs, and the peroxidase-mimetic properties are increasingly retained. In the presence of tetramethylbenzidine and H₂O₂, a deep blue coloration with an absorption maximum at 650 nm will be formed. The assay was applied to the determination of dichlorvos and carbofuran, and detection limits of 2.3 μg·L^-1 and 1.4 μg·L^-1 were obtained, respectively. Recovery experiments with spiked tap water and pears gave satisfactory relative standard deviations. Graphical abstract The blue product formed by platinum nanoparticle-catalyzed oxidation of 3,3'5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H₂O₂ is reduced if acetylthiocholine (ATCh) is hydrolyzed by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) to form thiocholine. However, if AChE is inhibited by pesticides, color formation will recover.

Preparation of polypyrrole/nanosilica composite for solid-phase microextraction of bisphenol and phthalates migrated from containers to eye drops and injection solutions

This paper describes the electrodeposition of polyphosphate-doped polypyrrole/nanosilica nanocomposite coating on steel wire for direct solid-phase microextraction of bisphenol A and five phthalates. We optimized influencing parameters on the extraction efficiency and morphology of the nanocomposite such as deposition potential, concentration of pyrrole and polyphosphate, deposition time and the nanosilica amount. Under the optimized conditions, characterization of the nanocomposite was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. Also, the factors related to the solid-phase microextraction method including desorption temperature and time, extraction temperature and time, ionic strength and pH were studied in detail. Subsequently, the proposed method was validated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry by thermal desorption and acceptable figures of merit were obtained. The linearity of the calibration curves was between 0.01 and 50 ng/mL with acceptable correlation coefficients (0.9956-0.9987) and limits of detection were in the range 0.002-0.01 ng/mL. Relative standard deviations in terms of intra-day and inter-day by five replicate analyses from aqueous solutions containing 0.1 ng/mL of target analytes were in the range 3.3%-5.4% and 5%-7.1%, respectively. Fiber-to-fiber reproducibilities were measured for three different fibers prepared in the same conditions and the results were between 7.3% and 9.8%. Also, extraction recoveries at two different concentrations were ≥96%. Finally, the suitability of the proposed method was demonstrated through its application to the analysis of some eye drops and injection solutions.

Fluorometric determination of pesticides and organophosphates using nanoceria as a phosphatase mimic and an inner filter effect on carbon nanodots

Nanoceria with a remarkable phosphatase mimicking activity was synthesized and used to catalyze the hydrolysis of phosphate esters in pH 10 solution. The catalytic effect of nanoceria was firstly investigated by selecting p-nitrophenyl phosphate as a model substrate. The pH value, incubation temperature, reaction time, and concentration of nanoceria were optimized. The catalytic effect was then confirmed by using methyl-paraoxon as a substrate. The p-nitrophenol anion released by the enzyme mimic is yellow and exerts an inner filter effect on the fluorescence of the carbon dots (with excitation/emission maxima at 400/520 nm). Response to methyl-paraoxon is linear in the 1.125-26.25 μmol L^-1 concentration range. The method was applied to the determination of pesticides in spiked Panax quinquefolius and water samples. Recoveries ranged from 85 to 103% (n = 3). The technique is rapid, reliable, and can be used for on-site detection of pesticides and organophosphates.
