Peroxidase-mimetic activity of a nanozyme with uniformly dispersed Fe3O4 NPs supported by mesoporous graphitized carbon for determination of glucose

Application of valence-variable transition-metal-oxide-based nanomaterials in electrochemical analysis: A review

The construction of materials with rapid electron transfer is considered an effective method for enhancing electrochemical activity in electroanalysis. It has been widely demonstrated that valence changes in transition metal ions can promote electron transfer and thus increase electrochemical activity. Recently, valence-variable transition metal oxides (TMOs) have shown popular application in electrochemical analysis by using their abundant valence state changes to accelerate electron transfer during electrochemical detection. In this review, we summarize recent research advances in valence changes of TMOs and their application in electrochemical analysis. This includes the definition and mechanism of valence change, the association of valence changes with electronic structure, and their applications in electrochemical detection, along with the use of density functional theory (DFT) to simulate the process of electron transfer during valence changes. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for developing and applying valence changes in electrochemical analysis are also identified.

Bimetallic FeOx-TiO2@Carbon hybrid structure materials with notable peroxidase enzyme mimics applied to one-step colorimetric detection of glucose

FeOx-TiO2@Carbon hybrid structure materials (FeOx-TiO2@CHs) with high peroxidase (POD)-like activity have been prepared by one-pot hydrothermal method. Based on the excellent POD activity of FeOx-TiO2@CHs, one pot colorimetric detection for glucose was constructed by using TMB as substrate with the synergistic reaction of glucose oxidase; the linear range and the limit of detection (LOD) are 25 ~ 1000 and 1.77 µM, respectively. Using this method, the glucose in serum real samples was detected with satisfactory results, and the results are consistent with that of the glucometer method in the hospital. The recovery in diabetic and artificial urine samples was 95.71 ~ 104.67% and 99.01 ~ 103.16%, respectively. The mechanism of the catalytic colorimetric reaction was also investigated by multiple measurements, and the results indicated that superoxide anions (O2•-) between FeOx-TiO2@CHs and substrate play a main role, but a small quantity of hydroxyl radical •OH and singlet oxygen 1O2 is also generated simultaneously. The one-pot reaction method is simple and fast; the detection process only requires a simple mixing, which is suitable for application in special environment.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based luminescent and electrochemical sensors for food contaminant detection

With the increasing population, food toxicity has become a prevalent concern due to the growing contaminants of food products. Therefore, the need for new materials for toxicant detection and food quality monitoring will always be in demand. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on luminescence and electrochemical sensors with tunable porosity and active surface area are promising materials for food contaminants monitoring. This review summarizes and studies the most recent progress on MOF sensors for detecting food contaminants such as pesticides, antibiotics, toxins, biomolecules, and ionic species. First, with the introduction of MOFs, food contaminants and materials for toxicants detection are discussed. Then the insights into the MOFs as emerging materials for sensing applications with luminescent and electrochemical properties, signal changes, and sensing mechanisms are discussed. Next, recent advances in luminescent and electrochemical MOFs food sensors and their sensitivity, selectivity, and capacities for common food toxicants are summarized. Further, the challenges and outlooks are discussed for providing a new pathway for MOF food contaminant detection tools. Overall, a timely source of information on advanced MOF materials provides materials for next-generation food sensors.

Novel ultrasensitive Raman assay method based on enzyme mimetics for ultra trace of H2O2

Enzyme mimetics have been widely applied on H₂O₂ assay, but it is still challenging and interesting to realize the sensitive detection for ultra-trace H₂O₂. Here, an ultrasensitive Raman assay method based on novel WO₃@IP6-Fe³⁺ enzyme mimetics with peroxidase-like activity was established. WO₃ microspheres (MSs) were found to have weak peroxidase-like activity, and the combination of IP6-Fe³⁺ and WO₃ can produce stronger activity. WO₃@IP6-Fe³⁺ MSs showed polyhedron-like structure, uniform size, and smooth surface. Although WO₃@IP6-Fe³⁺ enzyme mimetics have low catalytic efficiency and high absorbance background, the proposed Raman method can bypass the above problems. In Raman method, high concentration of WO₃@IP6-Fe³⁺ can be used to overcome low catalytic efficiency without high absorbance background. Moreover, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine oxide has prominent characteristic Raman peak at 1608 cm^-1, greatly improving the sensitivity and eliminating interference of impurities. Due to the high sensitivity and low background, Raman assay showed the ultra-low limit of detection (5.49 × 10^-15 M), which was 4-7 orders of magnitude lower than other detection methods. The ultrasensitive Raman assay not only provided the possibility for the enzyme mimetics-based detection of ultra-trace H₂O₂, but also enable the enzyme mimetics with low activity to be applied.

Recent advances in colorimetric sensors based on nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity

Nanozymes have been widely used to construct colorimetric sensors due to their advantages of cost-effectiveness, high stability, good biocompatibility, and ease of modification. The emergence of nanozymes greatly enhanced the detection sensitivity and stability of the colorimetric sensing platform. Recent significant research has focused on designing various sensors based on nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity for colorimetric analysis. However, with the deepening of research, nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity has also exposed some problems, such as weak affinity and low catalytic activity. In view of the above issues, existing investigations have shown that the catalytic properties of nanozymes can be improved by adding surface modification and changing the structure of nanomaterials. In this review, we summarize the recent trends and advances of colorimetric sensors based on several typical nanozymes with peroxidase-like activities, including noble metals, metal oxides, metal sulfides/metal selenides, and carbon and metal-organic frameworks (MOF). Finally, the current challenges and prospects of colorimetric sensors based on nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity are summarized and discussed to provide a reference for researchers in related fields.
