Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study seeks to quantify changes in long bone cross-sectional properties in a colony of semi-free-ranging rhesus macaques and compare observed aging patterns to those of other primates, including humans. METHODS Peripheral quantitative computed tomography was used to obtain midshaft cross sections of the femora, tibiae, humeri, and radii of 115 macaque specimens ranging from 7 to 31 years of age. Linear regressions of cross-sectional properties on age were analyzed. An analysis of covariance was conducted to quantify differences in rates of change between males and females. RESULTS Results show that medullary area increases while cortical area decreases with age in both sexes. The polar section modulus and the polar strain-strength index, measuring torsional and bending strength, show no decline in most sections but decrease significantly with age in the hindlimb elements of female macaques. Volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) also decreases with age in both male and female macaques; however, the cumulative change in vBMD over the adult lifespan is relatively small, equivalent to a less than 10% decrease in material strength. An analysis of covariance shows no differences between males and females in the rate of change of properties with age. DISCUSSION Overall, this study shows that there are some similarities in the skeletal aging patterns of macaques and those of other primates, including humans, but also some differences, with greater losses of bone found in human females as a result of an extended post-reproductive period that is generally not found among wild or semi-wild macaques.

Abstract
The chronic character of inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, results in various complications. One of them is osteoporosis, manifested by low bone mineral density, which leads to an increased risk of fractures. The aetiology of low bone mineral density is multifactorial and includes both diet and nutritional status. Calcium and vitamin D are the most often discussed nutrients with regard to bone mineral density. Moreover, vitamins A, K, C, B12; folic acid; calcium; phosphorus; magnesium; sodium; zinc; copper; and selenium are also involved in the formation of bone mass. Patients suffering from inflammatory bowel diseases frequently consume inadequate amounts of the aforementioned minerals and vitamins or their absorption is disturbed, resulting innutritional deficiency and an increased risk of osteoporosis. Thus, nutritional guidelines for inflammatory bowel disease patients should comprise information concerning the prevention of osteoporosis.

Estimation of Prevalence of Osteoporosis Using OSTA and Its Correlation with Sociodemographic Factors, Disability and Comorbidities. Abstract
Osteoporosis is a growing concern for an aging society. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of older adults who were at risk of osteoporosis and explore factors associated with osteoporosis. The relationship between the risk of osteoporosis, chronic conditions and disability was also explored. We hypothesized that respondents with high risk index of osteoporosis would be associated with greater disability. Participants aged 60 years and above (N = 2565) who were representative of Singapore’s multiethnic population were recruited. The Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool for Asians (OSTA) was used to classify the risk of osteoporosis. Information on sociodemographic details and chronic diseases were collected, while severity of disability was measured using the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0. The overall prevalence of the respondents who were at risk of osteoporosis was 52%. Those belonging to an older age, Chinese, female, never married or widowed, lower education and retired were associated with a higher risk of osteoporosis. A diagnosis of diabetes or hypertension was a protective factor against the risk of osteoporosis. High risk of osteoporosis was not associated with disability. Our findings highlighted specific factors associated with the risk of osteoporosis that could be useful for the prevention of osteoporosis and fractures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to evaluate parameters of bone and mineral metabolism after bariatric surgery. SUBJECTS AND METHODS This sectional study included data from medical records from 61 bariatric surgery (BS) patients (minimum period of 6 months after the procedure) and from 30 class II and III obese patients as a control group (Cont), consisting of daily dietary intake of macronutrients, calcium and sodium, serum 25(OH)D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) and other biochemical serum and urinary parameters. Bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP), leptin, fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) and deoxypyridinoline (DPYD) were determined from available banked serum and urinary samples. RESULTS Mean body mass index (BMI), median energy, carbohydrate, protein and sodium chloride consumption were significantly lower in the BS versus Cont, but calcium and lipids were not. No significant differences were found in ionized calcium, 25(OH)D, PTH and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23) between groups. Mean serum BAP was significantly higher for BS versus Cont and had a positive correlation with time after the surgical procedure. Mean serum leptin was significantly lower and median urinary DPYD higher in BS versus Cont. CONCLUSION The present study showed an increase in bone markers of both bone formation and resorption among bariatric patients up to more than 7 years after the surgical procedure, suggesting that an increased bone turnover persists even at a very long-term follow-up in such patients.

Abstract
The extent to which the 12 week separate and combined administration of vanadium (as sodium metavanadate--SMV, 0.125 mg V per ml) and magnesium (as magnesium sulphate--MS, 0.06 mg Mg per ml) affects bone mineral status and micromorphology as well as the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in femoral diaphysis (FD) was examined in male rats. The bone chemical composition of SMV-exposed rats was also investigated. SMV alone or in combination with MS (as SMV-MS) reduced the levels of MgFD (by 21% and 20%) and PFD (by 12% and 9%), lowered the CaFD content (by 7% and 10%), and caused a rise of the FeFD concentration (by 22.5% and 17%), compared with the control; SMV alone also reduced and enhanced the KFD and ZnFD concentrations (by 19% and 15%, respectively) but remained without significant effect on the femoral bone surface roughness (FBSR), whereas MS alone lowered the VFD, PFD, and CuFD levels (by 42%, 10%, and 20.6%), reduced FBSR, and created the regular femoral bone surface shape. The SMV-MS combination also induced a decline and rise in the levels of CuFD (by 30%) and NaFD (by 15%), respectively, compared with the control and the MS-supplemented rats; elevated ALPFD activity (by 24%, 35%, and 40%), compared with the control, SMV-exposed, and MS-supplemented animals; and increased FBSR. Relationships between the root mean square roughness (Sq) and skewness (Ssk): Sq [MS < SMV < Control < SMV-MS] ⇔ Ssk [SMV-MS > Control > SMV > MS], ALPFD and Sq: ALPFD⇔ Sq [SMV-MS > Control > SMV > MS], and between other variables were demonstrated. A partial limitation of the drop in the PFD and KFD levels and normalization of the ZnFD concentration were a consequence of the V-Mg antagonistic interaction whereas a consequence of the V-Mg synergistic interaction was the increase in the NaFD level, ALPFD activity, and FBSR. Ca10(PO4)5(SiO4)(OH) was part of the inorganic component of the bone of the SMV-exposed rats.

Abstract
Canalicular fluid flow is acknowledged to play a major role in bone functioning, allowing bone cells' metabolism and activity and providing an efficient way for cell-to-cell communication. Bone canaliculi are small canals running through the bone solid matrix, hosting osteocyte's dendrites, and saturated by an interstitial fluid rich in ions. Because of the small size of these canals (few hundred nanometers in diameter), fluid flow is coupled with electrochemical phenomena. In our previous works, we developed a multi-scale model accounting for coupled hydraulic and chemical transport in the canalicular network. Unfortunately, most of the physical and geometrical information required by the model is hardly accessible by nowadays experimental techniques. The goal of this study was to numerically assess the influence of the physical and material parameters involved in the canalicular fluid flow. The focus was set on the electro-chemo-mechanical features of the canalicular milieu, hopefully covering any in vivo scenario. Two main results were obtained. First, the most relevant parameters affecting the canalicular fluid flow were identified and their effects quantified. Second, these findings were given a larger scope to cover also scenarios not considered in this study. Therefore, this study gives insight into the potential interactions between electrochemistry and mechanics in bone and provides the rational for further theoretical and experimental investigations.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of dietary sodium on bone growth in young rats. Five-week-old rats were fed one of three different diets for 60 days: low sodium (NaCl, 0.32 g/kg diet), normal sodium (NaCl, 2.6 g/kg) and high sodium (NaCl, 20 g/kg). The proximal tibial metaphysis (PTM), the fifth lumbar vertebra (LV5) and the middle part of the tibia shaft (TX) were analysed by bone histomorphometry. The expression of three osteogenesis genes, Runx2, osteopontin and osteocalcin, was determined by RT-PCR in bone samples from the skull. In both the PTM and LV5, trabecular area and thickness were increased by the low-sodium diet, while the high-sodium diet decreased trabecular area in LV5. Dynamic data revealed that sodium restriction increased bone formation parameters in the PTM and LV5, but decreased bone resorption in LV5. In TX, endosteal bone formation was enhanced by the low-sodium diet and depressed by the high-sodium diet compared to the normal sodium group. But there were no statistically changes in the cortical bone area of TX. Low-sodium intake significantly enhanced the expression of all three osteogenesis genes compared to the normal sodium group, while high-sodium intake suppressed osteogenic gene expression. Our results suggest that sodium restriction in growing rats promotes bone development by influencing both bone formation and resorption.

Abstract
Based on the calciuric effect of sodium (Na), it has been speculated, although not proven, that higher Na intake might have a detrimental effect on bone health. The objective was to determine the relationship between Na intake (expressed as urinary Na) and bone mineral density/content (BMD/BMC) during a 3-year study. Participants were healthy, postmenopausal, Caucasian women (n = 136 at baseline) with no medications affecting bone. After baseline screening, half were instructed to reduce sodium intake to approximately 1,500 mg/day (intervention). The other half remained on habitual intake of approximately 3,000 mg/day (control). All subjects were given calcium and vitamin D supplements to achieve recommended levels. Anthropometries, densitometry, blood and 24-h urine analyses, and dietary and activity records were assessed every 6 months. Data were analyzed as a continuum, irrespective of the initial assignment to a control or intervention group, using random effects regressions with repeated measures analysis of variance to examine changes over time. Results showed that subjects with higher Na intake had higher BMD in the forearm and spine at baseline and all subsequent time-points (p < 0.01). In the forearm, time and higher urinary calcium modified results, producing a curvilinear decrease in BMD (p < 0.01). In the spine, more active individuals had higher BMD at all time-points. We conclude that higher sodium intake, within the range consumed, had a positive effect on some skeletal sites and no adverse effect on bone in women who had adequate calcium and vitamin D intake.

Abstract
High salt intake is a well-recognized risk factor for osteoporosis because it induces calciuria, but the effects of salt on calcium metabolism and the potential impact on bone health in postmenopausal women have not been fully characterized. This study investigated adaptive mechanisms in response to changes in salt and calcium intake in postmenopausal women. Eleven women completed a randomized cross-over trial consisting of four successive 5-wk periods of controlled dietary intervention, each separated by a minimum 4-wk washout. Moderately low and high calcium (518 versus 1284 mg) and salt (3.9 versus 11.2 g) diets, reflecting lower and upper intakes in postmenopausal women consuming a Western-style diet, were provided. Stable isotope labeling techniques were used to measure calcium absorption and excretion, compartmental modeling was undertaken to estimate bone calcium balance, and biomarkers of bone formation and resorption were measured in blood and urine. Moderately high salt intake (11.2 g/d) elicited a significant increase in urinary calcium excretion (p = 0.0008) and significantly affected bone calcium balance with the high calcium diet (p = 0.024). Efficiency of calcium absorption was higher after a period of moderately low calcium intake (p < 0.05) but was unaffected by salt intake. Salt was responsible for a significant change in bone calcium balance, from positive to negative, when consumed as part of a high calcium diet, but with a low calcium intake, the bone calcium balance was negative on both high and low salt diets.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Decreased bone mineral density and increased prevalence of bone fractures have been found in patients with idiopathic hypercalciuria. The purpose of this review is to summarize the recent published evidence that supports a potential role of the bone, and its link to the kidney and intestine, in the pathogenesis of idiopathic hypercalciuria. The effects of hypercalciuria on bone and the implications for treatment are also reviewed. RECENT FINDINGS Evidence suggests that the incidence of a first fracture in kidney stone patients is fourfold higher than the control population. Support for the role of bone in the pathophysiology of hypercalciuria has been corroborated. New studies have detailed the effects of several cytokines - increased number and sensitivity of vitamin D receptors, and increased acid production - upon the bone acting cells. Similarly, recent clinical and experimental studies have suggested that genetic factors confer a predisposition to the formation of renal calcium stones and bone demineralization. SUMMARY Whether hypercalciuria is the result of a primary bone disorder, a consequence of a persisting negative calcium balance or a combination of both still remains to be determined. Nevertheless, bone status must be evaluated and followed up in patients with idiopathic hypercalciuria.
