Abstract
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease that commonly affects the skin and mucous membranes. There is a difference of opinion among clinicians about whether OLP has been associated with oral candidiasis. Nonetheless, in OLP patients, the oral candidiasis prevalence rate ranges from 7.7 to 16.6%, as established through biopsy findings, whereas 37-50% of the prevalence rate has been noticed in culture findings. Oral candidiasis has been linked to several local and systemic factors, including salivary gland dysfunction, dental prostheses, topical or inhaled corticosteroids, smoking, and the use of systemic medications. The aim was to highlight the association of Candida in patients diagnosed with OLP, correlate the use of steroid therapy, and enumerate the factors of using steroid therapy as implicated causes for oral candidiasis. A search was made using search engines such as PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Science Citation Index, NIH Public Access, and Clarivate Analytics (Figure 1). The keywords using the research option for this field were "Oral Candidiasis" AND "Oral Lichen planus" or "Candidiasis" AND "Corticosteroids" or "Topical Corticosteroids" AND Oral Lichen planus or "Inhalation Corticosteroids" AND "Candidiasis" or "Oral Lichen planus" AND "Corticosteroids." The database search was made for the duration of 1991 to -2021 (Table 1). Additional articles were obtained regarding the literature on OLP and oral candidiasis and were considered background material. The incidence of oral candidiasis and associated lichen planus following steroid therapy enlisted by various authors has been addressed. According to the results of this study, there is a positive correlation between the presence of oral candidiasis in the OLP's patients treated with corticosteroids. Finally, this meta-analysis concluded that there is a positive correlation between the presence of Candida species in OLP and steroid medication.

Abstract
Aim There is need of an objective "standard procedure" that is reliable and clinically applicable for estimating oral neutrophil content in relation to oral diseases. Methods Forty-one patients with suspected oral candidosis (OC) and nine healthy controls with no oral mucosal disease were flushing with 10 ml mouth rinse (MR) (sterile phosphate-buffered saline) for 1 min. Aliquots were stored on different conditions to explore stability, storage, and fixation conditions for analysis by flow cytometry. Results The optimal storage and fixation condition for MR was by fixation 1 : 1 in 10% formalin and stored at 5°C. This procedure yielded stable results up to 7 days after collection. The ability of the optimized method to relate oral neutrophils to inflammation was demonstrated by the significantly higher number of neutrophils in patients with primary OC (p = 0.0334) compared to healthy controls. Conclusion This method is rapid, reliable, and clinically applicable for establishing the content of oral neutrophils. We demonstrate increased density of oral neutrophils in the MR of patients with OC. The potential of the method is to be "the standard procedure" for investigation of the oral inflammation in patients with oral diseases as it is noninvasive and provides high stability, clinical relevance, and minimal handling.

Abstract
Objectives The epidemiologic distribution of non-albicans species in the oral cavity of oral lichen planus (OLP) patients remains uncertain. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify factors associated with the presence of C. dubliniensis and other non-albicans species. Furthermore, independent risk factors for Candida superinfection in OLP should be identified. Material and methods Epidemiologic data and microbiological findings from 268 symptomatic OLP patients who underwent continuous oral swab culture over a 5-year period (2015–2019) were retrospectively reviewed. Candida species identification and semi-quantification were obtained by culture on CHROMagar Candida, followed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Results C. albicans was the most frequently isolated species (72.3%), followed by C. glabrata (7.3%), C. dubliniensis (5.8%), C. krusei and C. parapsilosis (both 2.6%). The presence of C. dubliniensis was significantly associated with tobacco smoking. Other non-albicans spp. were significantly more often detected in patients using removable dentures. Increasing age and the intake of psychotropic drugs were identified as independent risk factors of Candida superinfection in OLP. Conclusion In OLP patients, certain local and systemic factors increase the risk of carrying potentially drug-resistant Candida species and the development of Candida superinfection of OLP lesions. Clinical relevance Due to the frequent detection of non-albicans species in OLP, resistance or at least reduced sensitivity to azole antifungals should be expected, especially in smokers and patients using removable dentures. In the case of oral complaints, a superinfection with Candida should be considered, whereby older patients and patients taking psychotropic drugs have an increased risk for oral infection with Candida.

Abstract
The aim was to investigate oral health in randomly selected patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Data obtained by structured interview (self-reported lifestyle, oral symptoms and regularity of dental visits) and oral examination of patients with CKD from the Copenhagen University Hospital. Fourteen patients with CKD were screened. Only half of the patients reported regular dental visits and poor dental status was registered in half of the patients. Oral mucosal changes were registered in thirteen patients (93%). Eleven patients (79%) had gingival inflammatory disease. Twelve patients (86%) were carriers of Candida, and three (21%) had oral candidosis. Six patients (43%) had low whole saliva flow rate. Twelve patients (86%) reported at least one oral symptom. Overall, there was no differences in oral symptoms or findings related to kidney transplanted or not transplanted patients. The small sample size most likely influences the results. However, the vast majority of patients with CKD reported oral symptoms and only half consulted a dentist regularly. Poor dental status, oral mucosal changes and gingival disease were prevalent findings. Patients with CKD need focus on daily oral healthcare and regular dental visits. Interdisciplinary cooperation could encourage patients with CKD to focus on oral health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several recent studies have investigated the oral bacteriome in oral lichen planus (OLP), but longitudinal changes in microbiome have not been investigated. OBJECTIVE To study the bacteriome and mycobiome in OLP over a 1-year period and the impact of topical treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS Samples from 22 symptomatic OLP patients from a double-blinded, randomized intervention study were collected over a 1-year course at five visits. Bacterial and fungal abundances were investigated through lesional cytobrush (CB) and full mouthwash (MW). Initially, all patients received conventional (antimycotic or steroid) and probiotic or placebo treatment. RESULTS The microbial composition differed between the MW and CB samples. During the study period, the microbial composition was individual, with pronounced variability between visits. Patients grouped according to initial conventional treatment. During the study period, unidirectional change in the bacteriome was seen in the antimycotic group, whereas the mycobiome was stable. Malassezia restricta was the most abundant fungus. CONCLUSIONS The microbial composition of MW and CB differs in OLP. CB composition is less influenced by conventional and probiotic intervention. Initial antimycotic treatment influenced the bacteriome during the 1-year period. How the oral microbiome in health and disease is influenced by individual variability of fungi and bacteria, and Malassezia needs further investigation.

Abstract
Some patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) experience recurrent oral candidiasis(OC). Probiotic bacteria have shown to reduce the oral Candida count in vivo. OBJECTIVE To study whether probiotic intervention reduces recurrent OC in patients with OLP. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-two patients with symptomatic OLP were enrolled in the double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled intervention study. Lozenges containing Lactobacilli reuteri (DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289) or placebo were dissolved intra-orally three times daily for 16 weeks, after which patients were followed up for 36 weeks. Mucosal symptoms, VAS pain, OLP severity score, plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI), Candida count/carriage, and OC and/or need for symptomatic treatment were registered. Statistical significance was set at p < .05. RESULTS No difference was observed between the groups during the intervention or follow-up in terms of recurrent OC (p = .966) or need for symptomatic treatment (p = 1.000). There was no difference in terms of Candida count (p = .96) or carriage over time (p = .511). GI decreased in the probiotic group and increased in the placebo group (p = .046). OLP severity score decreased in both groups during the study period (p = .039). Across the entire study period, the placebo group had higher VAS pain score (p = .037). CONCLUSIONS Probiotic intervention did not reduce recurrent OC or Candida count/carriage, but the study experienced recruitment problems, which may have influenced results.

Abstract
Potentially malignant oral mucosal disease has some ability to give rise to malignancy of the oral epithelium, that is, oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The present article provides a succinct review of the possible or probable causes of potentially premalignant oral epithelial lesions. There is a focus upon studies that examined the causes or etiologic associations with clinically likely or histopathologically detectable oral epithelial dysplasia.

Abstract
Background: An alternative approach for managing Candida infections in the oral cavity by modulating the oral microbiota with probiotic bacteria has been proposed. Objective: The aim was to investigate the antifungal potential of the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus reuteri (DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289) against six oral Candida species (C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. tropicalis, C. dubliniensis, and C. parapsilosis).
Design: The lactobacilli were tested for their ability to co-aggregate with and inhibit the growth of the yeasts assessed by spectrophotometry and the agar overlay inhibition assay. Additionally, the pH was evaluated with microsensors, and the production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by the lactobacilli was verified. Results: Both L. reuteri strains showed co-aggregation abilities with the yeasts. The lactobacilli almost completely inhibited the growth of C. albicans and C. parapsilosis, but did not affect C. krusei. Statistically significant differences in co-aggregation and growth inhibition capacities between the two L. reuteri strains were observed (p<0.001). The pH measurements suggested that C. krusei can resist the acids produced by the lactobacilli. Conclusions:L. reuteri exhibited antifungal properties against five of the six most common oral Candida species. Further, the results reconfirms that the probiotic capacity of L. reuteri is strain specific.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In order to identify oral candidiasis patients being at risk of carrying potentially drug-resistant Candida, the aim of the study was to detect local, systemic, demographic, and health-related factors influencing (I) yeast spectrum composition and (II) antifungal administration frequency. Additionally, the aim was to investigate (III) species shift occurrence. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data from 798 patients (496 females, 302 males; mean age 59.7) with oral candidiasis diagnosed based on positive clinical and microbial findings (species identification and CFU count) between 2006 and 2011 were retrospectively analyzed using Pearson's chi(2) test and regression analysis. RESULTS Among 958 isolates, Candida albicans was the most frequently detected (76.8 %). Also, species intrinsically resistant to azoles were frequently isolated (15.8 and 17.7 % of isolates and patients). (I) Infections only caused by C. albicans were significantly associated with the use of inhalation steroids (p = 0.001) and antibiotics (p = 0.04), super-infection of lichen planus (p = 0.002), and the absence of removable dentures (p < 0.001). (II) Anti-mycotics were significantly more frequently administered in patients using inhalation steroids (p = 0.001), suffering from asthma/COPD, or smoking heavily (p = 0.003) and if C. albicans and non-albicans species were detected together (p = 0.001). (III) Pathogen composition did not change over time within the examined period (p = 0.239). CONCLUSIONS Different variables enhance the presence of certain Candida and the antifungal prescription frequency. No species shift was evident. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The major pathogen in oral candidiasis remains C. albicans. Nevertheless, therapeutic problems may be caused by the frequent presence of species intrinsically resistant to azoles, especially in patients wearing dentures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Lichen planus is considered to be the most common dermatological disease involving
the oral mucosa. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the profile, clinical features, and the presence of dysplasia and
candidiasis in patients with oral lichen planus. METHODS: A total of 21 patients were selected from 258 patients at risk for oral cancer
development. RESULTS: Most of the patients were white (76,2%), female (66,6%), with mean age of 58.8
years. Eight were smokers and seven were alcohol consumers. The buccal mucosa was
the most affected site, followed by the tongue and the gingiva. The reticular
pattern was the most common appearance. Histopathology depicted dysplasia in nine
cases and cytopathology was positive for Candida in eight cases in the first
appointment. CONCLUSION: Our data are similar to the literature. Cytopathology was important for the
diagnosis of candidiasis. Although the presence of dysplasia was verified, further
studies are necessary to clarify the importance of this finding.

Abstract
We selected the immunogenic cell wall ß-(1,3)-glucosyltransferase Bgl2p from Candida albicans as a target protein for the production of antibodies. We identified a unique peptide sequence in the protein and generated monoclonal anti- C. albicans Bgl2p antibodies, which bound in particular to whole C. albicans cells.
