Abstract
The progression of periodontal disease (PD) involves the action of oxidative stress mediators. Antioxidant agents may potentially attenuate the development of this condition. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effects of different doses of humic acid (HA), extracted from biomass vermicomposting, on redox status and parameters related to PD progression in rats. Fifty-four adult male Wistar rats were distributed into six experimental groups (control; PD; PD + 40 mg/kg of HA; PD + 80 mg/kg of HA; PD + 160 mg/kg of HA; PD + 320 mg/kg of HA). HA was administered by gavage for 28 days, and PD was induced by ligature on the mandibular first molars on the 14th day of treatment. After euthanasia, alveolar bone loss, oxidative stress in the gum and erythrocytes, serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and creatinine were analyzed. Animals treated with HA showed less bone loss at the dose of 80 mg/kg compared to the untreated PD group (p < 0.05). Animals treated with HA at doses higher than 80 mg/kg showed improvements in local and systemic redox status parameters (total antioxidant activity, thiobarbituric reactive substances, carbonyl derivatives, and superoxide dismutase) compared to the PD group (p < 0.05). Treatment with HA reduced serum levels of creatinine (at doses of 80 and 160 mg/kg) and AST (at doses of 40 and 80 mg/kg) compared to the PD group (p < 0.05). HA treatment attenuated alveolar bone loss and improved local and systemic oxidative stress parameters in ligature-induced PD rats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Periodontitis (PD) has the potential to induce systemic changes that affect both physical and behavioral aspects. These alterations may be associated with changes in both the inflammatory profile and the oxidative stress status of individuals with PD. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effects of PD on oxidative stress, as well as on behavioral parameters and cognitive impairment, in a preclinical model. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-four male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to PD and sham groups. PD was induced by the ligature protocol for 14 days. Behavioral tests were initiated on the 9th day of the experiment to evaluate anxious behavior and cognition (learning and memory). After euthanasia, oxidative stress was evaluated in the gums, blood, hippocampus, and amygdala. Alveolar bone loss, bone microstructure, and elemental compositions of the mandibular bone were also assessed. RESULTS PD increased alveolar bone loss, reduced the calcium and phosphorus content in the mandibular bone, and increased anxiety-like behavior and cognitive decline (p < 0.05). Furthermore, PD significantly affected the redox balance, as evidenced by increased total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in the gingiva and hippocampus (p < 0.05). It also led to increased lipid peroxidation in the gingiva and erythrocytes (p < 0.05), decreased antioxidant defenses in erythrocytes (superoxide dismutase) and the hippocampus (catalase), and increased antioxidant activity (catalase) in the amygdala (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION PD resulted in cognitive alterations, including impairments in spatial learning and memory, as well as increased anxious behavior, likely due to redox imbalance in rats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is important in individuals with metabolic syndrome components (MetS), and periodontitis may play an important role in this process. This study aims to evaluate the association between periodontitis and ASCVD in participants with the components of MetS, including obesity, dysglycemia, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study conducted followed the MOOSE reporting guidelines and the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. EMBASE, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PubMed and OpenGrey were searched for observational studies about the linkage of periodontitis to ASCVD in people with MetS components up to April 9, 2023. Cohort, case-control and cross-sectional studies were included after study selection. Quality evaluation was carried out using the original and modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale as appropriate. Random-effects model was employed for meta-analysis. RESULTS Nineteen studies were finally included in the quality analysis, and all of them were assessed as moderate to high quality. Meta-analyses among fifteen studies revealed that the participants with periodontitis were more likely to develop ASCVD in those who have dysglycemia (RR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.13-1.37; p < 0.05), obesity (RR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.02-1.24; p < 0.05), dyslipidemia (RR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.13-1.65; p < 0.05), or hypertension (1.20, 95% CI = 1.05-1.36; p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Periodontitis promotes the development of ASCVD in participants with one MetS component (obesity, dysglycemia, hypertension or dyslipidemia). CLINICAL RELEVANCE In people with MetS components, periodontitis may contribute to the ASCVD incidence.

Abstract
Background Aging has been implicated in many chronic inflammatory diseases, including periodontitis. Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease caused by long-term irritation of the periodontal tissues by the plaque biofilm on the surface of the teeth. However, only a few bibliometric analyses have systematically studied this field to date. This work sought to visualize research hot spots and trends in aging associated with periodontitis from 2002 to 2023 through bibliometric approaches. Methods Graphpad prism v8.0.2 was used to analyse and plot annual papers, national publication trends and national publication heat maps. In addition, CtieSpace (6.1.6R (64-bit) Advanced Edition) and VOSviewer (version 1.6.18) were used to analyse these data and visualize the scientific knowledge graph. Results The number of documents related to aging associated with periodontitis has steadily increased over 21 years. With six of the top ten institutions in terms of publications coming from the US, the US is a major driver of research in this area. journal of periodontology is the most published journal in the field. Tonetti MS is the most prolific authors and co-cited authors in the field. Journal of Periodontology and Journal of Clinical Periodontology are the most popular journals in the field with the largest literature. Periodontitis, Alzheimer's disease, and peri-implantitis are current hot topics and trends in the field. Inflammation, biomarkers, oxidative stress cytokines are current research hotspots in this field. Conclusion Our research found that global publications regarding research on aging associated with periodontitis increased dramatically and were expected to continue increasing. Inflammation and aging, and the relationship between periodontitis and systemic diseases, are topics worthy of attention.

Abstract
The circadian rhythms generated by the master biological clock located in the brain's hypothalamus influence central physiological processes. At the molecular level, a core set of clock genes interact to form transcription-translation feedback loops that provide the molecular basis of the circadian rhythm. In animal models of disease, a desynchronization of clock genes in peripheral tissues with the central master clock has been detected. Interestingly, patients with vascular dementia have sleep disorders and irregular sleep patterns. These alterations in circadian rhythms impact hormonal levels, cardiovascular health (including blood pressure regulation and blood vessel function), and the pattern of expression and activity of antioxidant enzymes. Additionally, oxidative stress in vascular dementia can arise from ischemia-reperfusion injury, amyloid-beta production, the abnormal phosphorylation of tau protein, and alterations in neurotransmitters, among others. Several signaling pathways are involved in the pathogenesis of vascular dementia. While the precise mechanisms linking circadian rhythms and vascular dementia are still being studied, there is evidence to suggest that maintaining healthy sleep patterns and supporting proper circadian rhythm function may be important for reducing the risk of vascular dementia. Here, we reviewed the main mechanisms of action of molecular targets related to the circadian cycle and oxidative stress in vascular dementia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Investigating the changes in the oxidative stress levels and helper T lymphocyte (Th) subsets in patients with periodontitis and IgA nephropathy (IgAN) to determine their relationship. BACKGROUND IgAN has a high prevalence, poor prognosis, and no effective cure. Accumulating evidence has implicated a close relationship between periodontitis and chronic kidney diseases, in which both IgAN and chronic periodontitis show chronic inflammation and abnormal metabolism. However, few studies have been conducted on the relationship between the two diseases from this perspective. METHODS We divided 86 IgAN patients into patients with healthy periodontium (IgAN-H, n = 34) and patients with periodontitis IgAN (IgAN-P, n = 52); moreover, we divided 72 systemically healthy participants into patients with periodontitis (H-P, n = 35) and participants with healthy periodontium (H-H, n = 37). The proportions of Th subsets in peripheral blood were estimated using flow cytometry. Cytokine levels in plasma were assessed using cytokine assay kits. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to evaluate the plasma levels of oxidative stress. RESULTS Our results from analyzing the Th cell subsets indicated that Th2 cell counts in the IgAN-P group were significantly lower than those in the IgAN-H group, while Th17 cell counts were increased (p < 0.05). Moreover, the Th1/Th2 ratio and interleukin-6 levels in the IgAN-P group were significantly higher than those in the H-H group (p < 0.01). Compared with that in the H-H group, in the remaining three groups, plasma total oxidation state (TOS) levels were increased (p < 0.01), while plasma total antioxidant state (TAS) levels were decreased (p < 0.05). Furthermore, estimated glomerular filtration rate was negatively correlated with the probing depth and gingival bleeding index. IgAN was a risk factor for periodontitis, while TAS was a protective factor for periodontitis. The oxidative stress index (OSI) might be valuable for distinguishing periodontitis patients from healthy controls (area under the receiver operator characteristic curve = 0.951). CONCLUSION IgAN is an independent risk factor of periodontitis, and the Th17 cell-mediated inflammatory response might be associated with the occurrence of periodontitis in patients with IgAN. Patients with coexisting IgAN and periodontitis exhibit increased oxidative stress, in which TOS and OSI are potential biomarkers for diagnosing periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Periodontitis is immune inflammatory disease, atherosclerosis (AS) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are two common systemic diseases. Periodontitis promotes AS and CKD, and CKD interacts with AS. The objective of this animal study was to evaluate the changes of kidney when periodontitis and atherosclerosis exist separately and the degenerative effects of periodontitis on the kidney in atherosclerotic mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 40 male Apoe-/- mice were randomly divided into four groups: control (NC), periodontitis (PD), AS and AS with PD (AS + PD). AS was induced by high-fat diet feeding, and PD was induced by injection of Porphyromonas gingivalis-Lipopolysaccharide (P.g-LPS) (endotoxin suspension) into the buccal side of mouse maxillary molars. The right maxilla of mice was scanned with micro-CT to evaluate alveolar bone loss; aortic tissue was stained with HE and Oil-Red O to evaluate arterial plaque formation; serum was collected to detect the changes of blood lipids and serum renal function parameters (blood urea nitrogen [BUN], serum creatinine [Scr]); renal histopathological changes were evaluated by HE staining (glomerular and tubular damage scores), PAS staining (glomerular Mesangial matrix index) and Masson staining (percentage of renal fibrosis area); qRT-PCR and ELISA were used to evaluate the expression of renal inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α, Interleukin-1β, neutrophil surface marker Ly6G). RESULTS The amount of alveolar bone loss: PD group was significantly higher than NC group (p < .05); AS + PD group was higher than PD group, the difference was not statistically significant. Atherosclerotic plaque formation and serum lipid changes: AS group were significantly worse than NC group (p < .05), and AS + PD group were worse than AS group. The results of the corresponding qualitative and quantitative analyses of kidney tissue in experimental animals gradually deteriorated in the NC group, PD group, AS group and AS + PD group and worsened sequentially. Renal function parameters: the content of BUN in AS group was higher than that in PD group, the difference was not statistically significant; Scr in AS group was significantly higher than that in PD group (p < .05); the contents of BUN and Scr in AS + PD group were higher than those in AS group, the difference was not statistically significant. Glomerular and tubular damage scores: AS group were higher than PD group, the difference was not statistically significant; AS + PD group were significantly higher than AS group (p < .001). The ratio of glomerular mesangial matrix to glomerular area and the percentage of renal fibrosis area: AS group were significantly higher than PD group (p < .001), and AS + PD group were significantly higher than AS group (p < .001). Expression of inflammatory cytokines: AS group was higher than PD group, the difference was not statistically significant; AS + PD group was significantly higher than AS group (p < .05). CONCLUSION Both PD and AS can aggravate the inflammatory stress of kidney tissue and cause the damage of kidney tissue, and the inflammatory increase and damage effect of AS is stronger; PD can promote kidney damage of atherosclerotic mice by aggravating the renal inflammation in atherosclerotic mice; renal function parameters were not completely synchronized with the changes of renal inflammation and histopathology in each group of mice; PD can promote AS, periodontal inflammation in mice with AS is more severe, and the special changes of blood lipids in mice with AS are closely related to the above results.

Abstract
Introduction: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory oral disease that destroys soft and hard periodontal support tissues. Multiple cell death modes including apoptosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis play a crucial role in the pathogenicity of inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to identify genes associated with ferroptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis in different cells present in the periodontium of periodontitis patients. Methods: Gingival tissues' mRNA sequencing dataset GSE173078 of 12 healthy control and 12 periodontitis patients' and the microarray dataset GSE10334 of 63 healthy controls and 64 periodontitis patients' were obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. A total of 910 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) obtained in GSE173078 were intersected with necroptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis-related genes to obtain the differential genes associated with cell death (DCDEGs), and the expression levels of 21 differential genes associated with cell death were verified with dataset GSE10334. Results: Bioinformatic analysis revealed 21 differential genes associated with cell death attributed to ferroptosis, pyroptosis, and necroptosis in periodontitis patients compared with healthy controls. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses revealed that 21 differential genes associated with cell death were related to various cellular and immunological pathways including inflammatory responses, necroptosis, and osteoclast differentiation. Additionally, the single-cell RNA (scRNA) sequencing data GSE171213 of 4 healthy controls and 5 periodontitis patients' periodontal tissue was analyzed to obtain cell clustering and cell types attributed to differential genes associated with cell death. We found that among 21 DCDEGs, SLC2A3, FPR2, TREM1, and IL1B were mainly upregulated in neutrophils present in the periodontium of periodontitis patients. Gene overlapping analysis revealed that IL-1B is related to necroptosis and pyroptosis, TREM1 and FPR2 are related to pyroptosis, and SLC2A3 is related to ferroptosis. Finally, we utilized the CIBERSORT algorithm to assess the association between DCDEGs and immune infiltration phenotypes, based on the gene expression profile of GSE10334. The results revealed that the upregulated SLC2A3, FPR2, TREM1, and IL1B were positively correlated with neutrophil infiltration in the periodontium. Discussion: The findings provide upregulated SLC2A3, FPR2, TREM1, and IL1B in neutrophils as a future research direction on the mode and mechanism of cell death in periodontitis and their role in disease pathogenicity.

Abstract
In order to solve the effect of orthodontics combined with implant repair on the aesthetic effect and gingival crevicular fluid factor of patients with dentition defect and periodontitis, 60 patients who met the diagnostic criteria of chronic periodontitis were proposed. They were randomly divided into treatment group (taking Bushen Huoxue Guchi recipe for 3 courses while basic periodontal treatment) and control group (only basic periodontal treatment without taking any drugs). The experimental method of 30 cases in each group showed that PD, Al, and GI in the treatment group and control group decreased to varying degrees compared with those before treatment. The treatment group decreased significantly compared with the control group (P < 0.01). Chronic periodontitis is a common clinical periodontal disease, accounting for up to 95%, local stimulation, a variety of anaerobic bacteria infection, and periodontal plaque, and other factors may cause the occurrence of diseases. Routine treatment mainly includes upper gingival cleaning, lower curettage treatment, and equal root surface treatment. Although the clinical symptoms can be alleviated to a certain extent, the cause cannot be fundamentally excluded, leading to the disease progression in some patients and the formation of aggressive periodontitis and necrotizing periodontal disease.

Association between periodontal inflamed surface area and serum acute phase biomarkers in patients with sickle cell anemia. Arch Oral Biol 2022; 143:105543. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA) and serum inflammatory biomarkers in patients with sickle cell anemia. DESIGN Patients with sickle cell anemia (n = 80) and systemically healthy individuals (n = 80) were enrolled in the study. Crisis episodes were recorded and blood samples were collected from patients with sickle cell anemia. Clinical periodontal parameters and PISA values were calculated from all patients. Ferritin and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were analyzed biochemically. RESULTS In sickle cell anemia group, presence of periodontitis (p < 0.001) was more frequent than periodontal health (p < 0.001). All clinical periodontal recordings and PISA values were higher in the sickle cell anemia group compared to controls (p < 0.001). Patients with PISA > 776 mm² had 6.06-fold greater chances of having hs-CRP levels above 10 mg/L (OR = 6.06; 95 % CI: 1.9-19.26) and had 31.41-fold greater chances of having ferritin levels above 1000 ng/L (OR = 31.41; 95 % CI: 6.62-149.16). Also, they had 3.27-fold greater risk of having crisis frequency above three times per year (OR = 3.27; 95 % CI: 1.05-10.23) after adjusting for confounders. CONCLUSION In patients with sickle cell anemia, positive association was evident between PISA values and serum acute phase biomarkers levels as well as the frequency of acute painful crisis. Patients with increased inflammatory burden may have a higher likelihood of developing periodontitis in the presence of sickle cell anemia. PISA value could be a candidate disease activity indicator in patients with an underlying hematological condition.

Abstract
Background Oxidative stress has been implicated in many chronic inflammatory diseases, including periodontitis. To date, however, only a few bibliometric analyses have systematically studied this field. This work sought to visualize research hot spots and trends in oxidative stress associated with periodontitis from 1987 to 2022 through bibliometric approaches. Methods The Web of Science Core Collection was searched to retrieve relevant publications. HistCite, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace were used to perform bibliometric analysis visually in terms of annual output, active countries, prolific institutions, authors, core journals, co-cited references, and co-occurrence of keywords. Results A total of 1654 documents were selected for analysis. From 1 January 1987 to 11 June 2022, the number of annual publications related to oxidative stress in periodontitis exhibited an upward trend. The most prolific country was China with 322 documents, but the United States had 11334 citations. Okayama University, University of Birmingham, and Sichuan University were the most active and contributive institutions. The Journal of Periodontology ranked first in terms of numbers of publications and citations. Ekuni was the most prolific author, while Chapple ranked first among co-cited authors. The Role of Reactive Oxygen and Antioxidant Species in Periodontal Tissue Destruction published by Chapple was the most frequently co-cited reference. Keywords co-occurrence showed that oxidative stress was closely related to inflammation, antioxidants, and diabetes. Conclusion Our research found that global publications regarding research on oxidative stress associated with periodontitis increased dramatically and were expected to continue increasing. Inflammation and oxidative stress, and the relationship between periodontitis and systemic diseases, are topics worthy of attention.
