Abstract
Selenium is a trace and necessary micronutrient for human, animal, and microbial health. Many researchers have recently been interested in selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) due to their biocompatibility, bioavailability, and low toxicity. As a result of their greater bioactivity, selenium nanoparticles are widely employed in a variety of biological applications. Physical, chemical, and biological approaches can all be used to synthesize selenium nanoparticles. Since it uses non-toxic solvents and operates at a suitable temperature, the biological technique is a preferable option. This review article addresses the processes implemented in the synthesis of SeNPs and highlights their medicinal uses, such as the treatment of fungi, bacteria, cancer, and wounds. Furthermore, we discuss the most recent findings on the potential of several biological materials for selenium nanoparticle production. The precursor, extract, process, time, temperature, and other synthesis criteria will be elaborated in conjunction with the product's physical properties (size, shape, and stability). The synergies of SeNP synthesis via various methods aid future researchers in precisely synthesizing SeNPs and using them in desired applications.

Abstract
The biosynthetic process of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) by specific bacterial strain, whose growth directly affects the synthesis efficiency, has attracted great attentions. We previously reported that Bacillus paralicheniformis SR14, a SeNPs-producing bacteria, could improve intestinal antioxidative function in vitro. To further analyze the biological characteristics of SR14, whole genome sequencing was used to reveal the genetic characteristics in selenite reduction and sugar utilization. The results reviewed that the genome size of SR14 was 4,448,062 bp, with a GC content of 45.95%. A total of 4300 genes into 49 biological pathways was annotated to the KEGG database. EC: 1.1.1.49 (glucose-6-phosphate 1-dehydrogenase) and EC: 5.3.1.9 (glucose-6-phosphate isomerase), were found to play a potential role in glucose degradation and EC:2.7.1.4 (fructokinase) might be involved in the fructose metabolism. Growth profile and selenite-reducing ability of SR14 under different sugar supplements were determined and the results reviewed that glucose had a better promoting effect on the reduction of selenite and growth of bacteria than fructose, sucrose, and maltose. Moreover, RT-qPCR experiment proved that glucose supplement remarkably promoted the expressions of thioredoxin, fumarate reductase, and the glutathione peroxidase in SR14. Analysis of mRNA expression showed levels of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and fructokinase significantly upregulated under the supplement of glucose. Overall, our data demonstrated the genomic characteristics of SR14 and preliminarily determined that glucose supplement was most beneficial for strain growth and SeNPs synthesis.

Abstract
A patented strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens C-1 in our laboratory could produce functional sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) under optimized fermentation conditions. With the strong stress resistance and abundant secondary metabolites, C-1 showed potential to be developed as selenium-enriched postbiotics. C-1 has the ability to synthesize SeNPs when incubated with 100 μg/ml Na2SeO3 for 30 h at 30 °C aerobically with 10% seeds-culture. The transformation rate from Na2SeO3 into SeNPs reached to 55.51%. After selenium enrichment, there were no significant morphology changes in C-1 cells but obvious SeNPs accumulated inside of cells, observed by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope, verified by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. SeNPs had antioxidant activity in radical scavenge of superoxide (O2-), Hydroxyl radical (OH-) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazine (DPPH), where scavenging ability of OH- is the highest. Selenium-enriched C-1 had obvious anti-inflammatory effect in protecting integrity of Caco-2 cell membrane destroyed by S. typhimurium; it could preventing inflammatory damage in Caco-2 stressed by 200 μM H2O2 for 4 h, with significantly reduced expression of IL-8 (1.687 vs. 3.487, P = 0.01), IL-1β (1.031 vs. 5.000, P < 0.001), TNF-α (2.677 vs. 9.331, P < 0.001), increased Claudin-1 (0.971 vs. 0.611, P < 0.001) and Occludin (0.750 vs. 0.307, P < 0.001). Transcriptome data analysis showed that there were 381 differential genes in the vegetative growth stage and 1674 differential genes in the sporulation stage of C-1 with and without selenium-enrichment. A total of 22 ABC transporter protein-related genes at vegetative stage and 70 ABC transporter protein-related genes at sporulation stage were founded. Genes encoding MsrA, thiol, glutathione and thioredoxin reduction were significantly up-regulated; genes related to ATP synthase such as atpA and atpD genes showed down-regulated during vegetative stage; the flagellar-related genes (flgG, fliM, fliL, and fliJ) showed down-regulated during sporulation stage. The motility, chemotaxis and colonization ability were weakened along with synthesized SeNPs accumulated intracellular at sporulation stage. B. amyloliquefaciens C-1 could convert extracellular selenite into intracellular SeNPs through the oxidation-reduction pathway, with strong selenium-enriched metabolism. The SeNPs and selenium-enriched cells had potential to be developed as nano-selenium biomaterials and selenium-enriched postbiotics.

Abstract
Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor materials that range from 2 nm to 10 nm. These nanomaterials (NMs) are smaller and have more unique properties compared to conventional nanoparticles (NPs). One of the unique properties of QDs is their special optoelectronic properties, making it possible to apply these NMs in bioimaging. Different size and shape QDs, which are used in various fields such as bioimaging, biosensing, cancer therapy, and drug delivery, have so far been produced by chemical methods. However, chemical synthesis provides expensive routes and causes serious environmental and health issues. Therefore, various biological systems such as bacteria, fungi, yeasts, algae, and plants are considered as potent eco-friendly green nanofactories for the biosynthesis of QDs, which are both economic and environmentally safe. The review aims to provide a descriptive overview of the various microbial agents for the synthesis of QDs and their biomedical applications for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is in great demand as a health supplement due to its superior reactivity and excellent bioavailability, despite selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) having signs of minor toxicity. At present, the efficiency of preparing SeNPs using lactic acid bacteria is unsatisfactory. Therefore, a probiotic bacterial strain that is highly efficient at converting selenite to elemental selenium is needed. In our work, four selenite-reducing bacteria were isolated from soil samples. Strain LAB-Se2, identified as Pediococcus acidilactici DSM20284, had a reduction rate of up to 98% at ambient temperature. This strain could reduce 100 mg L-1 of selenite to elemental Se within 48 h at pH 4.5-6.0, a temperature of 30-40 °C, and a salinity of 1.0-6.5%. The produced SeNPs were purified, freeze-dried, and subsequently systematically characterised using FTIR, DSL, SEM-EDS, and TEM techniques. SEM-EDS analysis proved the presence of selenium as the foremost constituent of SeNPs. The strain was able to form spherical SeNPs, as determined by TEM. In addition, DLS analysis confirmed that SeNPs were negatively charged (-26.9 mV) with an average particle size of 239.6 nm. FTIR analysis of the SeNPs indicated proteins and polysaccharides as capping agents on the SeNPs. The SeNPs synthesised by P. acidilactici showed remarkable antibacterial activity against E. coli, B. subtilis, S. aureus, and K. pneumoniae with inhibition zones of 17.5 mm, 13.4 mm, 27.9 mm, and 16.2 mm, respectively; they also showed varied MIC values in the range of 15-120 μg mL-1. The DPPH, ABTS, and hydroxyl, and superoxide scavenging activities of the SeNPs were 70.3%, 72.8%, 95.2%, and 85.7%, respectively. The SeNPs synthesised by the probiotic Lactococcus lactis have the potential for safe use in biomedical and nutritional applications.

Abstract
This study reports the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using a Pseudomonas canadensis Ma1 strain isolated from wild-growing mushrooms. Freshly prepared cells of P. canadensis Ma1 incubated at 26-28 °C with a silver nitrate solution changed to a yellowish brown color, indicating the formation of AgNPs, which was confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction. SEM analysis showed spherical nanoparticles with a distributed size mainly between 21 and 52 nm, and the XRD pattern revealed the crystalline nature of AgNPs. Also, it provides an evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of the biosynthesized AgNPs against Pseudomonas tolaasii Pt18, the causal agent of mushroom brown blotch disease. AgNPs were found to be bioactive at 7.8 μg/ml showing a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) effect against P. tolaasii Pt18 strain. AgNPs at the MIC level significantly reduced virulence traits of P. tolaasii Pt18 such as detoxification of tolaasin, various motility behavior, chemotaxis, and biofilm formation which is important for pathogenicity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that bacterial cells treated with AgNPs showed a significant structural abnormality. Results showed that AgNPs reduced brown blotch symptoms in vivo. This research demonstrates the first helpful use of biosynthesized AgNPs as a bactericidal agent against P. tolaasii.

Abstract
In the present study, biogenic selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have been prepared using Paenibacillus terreus and functionalized with nystatin (SeNP@PVP_Nystatin nanoconjugates) for inhibiting growth, morphogenesis, and a biofilm in Candida albicans. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy analysis has shown a characteristic absorption at 289, 303, and 318 nm, and X-ray diffraction analysis has shown characteristic peaks at different 2θ values for SeNPs. Electron microscopy analysis has shown that biogenic SeNPs are spherical in shape with a size in the range of 220-240 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has confirmed the functionalization of nystatin on SeNPs (formation of SeNP@PVP_Nystatin nanoconjugates), and the zeta potential has confirmed the negative charge on the nanoconjugates. Biogenic SeNPs are inactive; however, nanoconjugates have shown antifungal activities on C. albicans (inhibited growth, morphogenesis, and a biofilm). The molecular mechanism for the action of nanoconjugates via a real-time polymerase chain reaction has shown that genes involved in the RAS/cAMP/PKA signaling pathway play an important role in antifungal activity. In cytotoxic studies, nanoconjugates have inhibited only 12% growth of the human embryonic kidney cell line 293 cells, indicating that the nanocomposites are not cytotoxic. Thus, the biogenic SeNPs produced by P. terreus can be used as innovative and effective drug carriers to increase the antifungal activity of nystatin.

Abstract
In order to improve the functionality and additional value of agricultural products, this study developing nano-selenium fermentation broth and established a new application strategy of bio-nano-selenium by screening and identifying selenium-rich microorganisms. We isolated a new strain from tobacco waste and named it Bacillus subtilis SE201412 (GenBank accession no. OP854680), which could aerobically grow under the condition of 66,000 mg L-1 selenite concentration, and could convert 99.19% of selenite into biological nano-selenium (BioSeNPs) within 18 h. Using strain SE201412, we industrially produced the different concentrations of fermentation broth containing 5000-3000 mg L-1 pure selenium for commercial use. The synthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA). TEM and SEM results showed that SeNPs were distributed outside cells. NTA assay of fermentation broth indicated that the nanoparticles were spherical with an average particle size of 126 ± 0.5 nm. Toxicity test revealed that the median lethal dose (LD50) of the fermentation broth to mice was 2710 mg kg-1, indicating its low toxicity and high safety. In addition, we applied BioSeNP fermentation broth to rice and wheat through field experiments. The results showed that the application of fermentation broth significantly increased the total selenium content and organic selenium percentage in rice and wheat grains. Our findings provide valuable reference for the development of BioSeNPs with extensive application prospects.

Green nanotechnology for controlling bacterial load and heavy metal accumulation in Nile tilapia fish using biological selenium nanoparticles biosynthesized by Bacillus subtilis AS12. Front Microbiol 2022; 13:1015613. Abstract
Heavy metal accumulation and pathogenic bacteria cause adverse effects on aquaculture. The active surface of selenium (Se) nanoparticles can mitigate these effects. The present study used Se-resistant Bacillus subtilis AS12 to fabricate biological Se nanoparticles (Bio-SeNPs). The double-edged Bio-SeNPs were tested for their ability to reduce the harmful effects of heavy metals and bacterial load in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and their respective influences on fish growth, behavior, and health. The Bio-SeNPs have a spherical shape with an average size of 77 nm and high flavonoids and phenolic content (0.7 and 1.9 g g-1 quercetin and gallic acid equivalents, respectively), resulting in considerable antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The Bio-SeNPs (3-5 μg ml-1) in the current study resolved two serious issues facing the aquaculture industry, firstly, the population of pathogenic bacteria, especially Aeromonas hydrophilia, which was reduced by 28-45% in fish organs. Secondly, heavy metals (Cd and Hg) at two levels (1 and 2 μg ml-1) were reduced by 50-87% and 57-73% in response to Bio-SeNPs (3-5 μg ml-1). Thus, liver function parameters were reduced, and inner immunity was enhanced. The application of Bio-SeNPs (3-5 μg ml-1) improved fish gut health, growth, and behavior, resulting in fish higher weight gain by 36-52% and a 40% specific growth rate, compared to controls. Furthermore, feeding and arousal times increased by 20-22% and 28-53%, respectively, while aggression time decreased by 78% compared to the control by the same treatment. In conclusion, Bio-SeNPs can mitigate the accumulation of heavy metals and reduce the bacterial load in a concentration-dependent manner, either in the fish media or fish organs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Elemental selenium, a new type of selenium supplement, can be biosynthesized via microorganisms. This study is to characterize a patent probiotic bacteria Enterococcus durans A8-1, capable of reducing selenite (Se6+ or Se4+) to elemental selenium (Se0) with the formation of Se nanoparticles (SeNPs). METHODS The selenium nanoparticles synthesized from A8-1 were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray photoelectron energy (XPS). The Caco2 cells were used to investigate the effects of Se-enriched A8-1 on the viability, membrane integrity, and the regulation of cellular inflammation through MTT and ELISA assays. The selenium-enriched metabolic function of A8-1 was analyzed by transcriptome sequencing. RESULTS E. durans A8-1 has the ability to synthesize intracellular SeNPs that are incubated with 60 mg/L sodium selenite for 18 h at 37 °C with 7 % inoculum under aerobic conditions. The selenium-enriched transformation rate increased to 43.46 %. After selenium enrichment, there were no significant morphological changes in E. durans A8-1 cells. The cells also exhibited no cytotoxicity when incubated with Caco-2 cells, and increased cellular proliferation. Furthermore, Se-enriched A8-1 cells antagonize the adhesion of S. typhimurium ATCC14028 onto the surface of Caco-2 cells protecting cell membrane integrity and was assessed by measuring LDH and AKP activities (P <0.001, P <0.001). Moreover, Se-enriched A8-1 could protect Caco-2 cells from inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide and help the cells alleviate the inflammation through the reduced expression of cytokine IL-8 (P = 0.0012, P <0.001) and TNF-α (P <0.001, P <0.001). Based on transcriptome sequencing in Se-enriched E. durans A8-1 cells, there were 485 up-regulated genes and 322 down-regulated genes (Padj < 0.05). There were 19 predicted up-regulated genes that are highly related to the potential selenium metabolism pathway, which focuses on the transportation of Na2SeO3 by membrane proteins, and gradually reduces Na2SeO3 to elemental selenium aggregates that are deposited onto the membrane surface via the intracellular redox response. CONCLUSION E. durans A8-1 could convert extracellular selenite into intracellular biological SeNPs via redox pathway with strong selenium-rich metabolism, and its biological SeNPs have anti-inflammatory properties, which have the potential for the development of composite selenium nanomaterials and can be further studied for the function of SeNPs with potential applications.

Abstract
Selenium is an essential microelement required for human health. The biotransformation of selenium nanoparticles has attracted increasing attention in recent years. However, little of the literature has investigated the comprehensive evaluation of the strains for practical application and the effect on the functional properties in the existence of Se. The present study showed the selenite reduction strain Bacillus subtilis T5 (up to 200 mM), which could produce high yields of selenium polysaccharides and selenium nanoparticles in an economical and feasible manner. Biosynthesized selenium nanoparticles by B. subtilis T5 were characterized systematically using UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR, Zeta Potential, DLS, and SEM techniques. The biosynthesized SeNPs exhibited high stability with small particle sizes. B. subtilis T5 also possessed a tolerance to acidic pH and bile salts, high aggregation, negative hemolytic, and superior antioxidant activity, which showed excellent probiotic potential and can be recommended as a potential candidate for the selenium biopharmaceuticals industry. Remarkably, B. subtilis T5 showed that the activity of α-amylase was enhanced with selenite treatment to 8.12 U/mL, 2.72-fold more than the control. The genus Bacillus was first reported to produce both selenium polysaccharides with extremely high Se-content (2.302 g/kg) and significantly enhance the activity to promote α-amylase with selenium treatment. Overall, B. subtilis T5 showed potential as a bio-factory for the biosynthesized SeNPs and organ selenium (selenium polysaccharide), providing an appealing perspective for the biopharmaceutical industry.

Abstract
In the past few years, photo-luminescent inorganic materials have been studied extensively as fluorescent sensors, and diagnostic and bioimaging tools. The assessment of photoluminescence (PL) properties of selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs), especially mycosynthesized Se NPs, is still in its infancy. Herein, we have biosynthesized highly dispersed fluorescent Se NPs (42 nm) using endophytic fungus Fusarium oxysporum, and fully characterized them using sophisticated instruments like TEM, XRD, UV–Vis spectrophotometer, FTIR, and PL spectrometer. To determine the therapeutic efficacy and side effect profiles, these crystalline Se NPs were radiolabeled with technetium-99m (99mTc) and their biodistribution and renal clearance times were investigated in the normal Wister rat. The results showed that these Se NPs may be useful for targeting the lungs and liver dysfunction as significant accumulation of these NPs was observed in the liver (approx. 19.47 ± 4%) and lungs (at 6 ± 1%) after 10 min of post-injection. Quick circulation and the presence of Se NPs in kidney (3.8 ± 2%) also suggested the easy excretion of these NPs from the body through urinary tract. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity of Se NPs (IC50, 159.5 μg/mL) has been investigated using DPPH free radical scavenging assay with scavenging efficacy of 80.4% where ascorbic acid (IC50, 5.6 μg/mL) was used as a positive control. Additionally, the microscopic study of the inhibition zone encircled around Se NPs confirmed their strong antifungal and antisporulant activity against the black fungus Aspergillus niger.

Exopolymer-Functionalized Nanoselenium from Bacillus subtilis SR41: Characterization, Monosaccharide Analysis and Free Radical Scavenging Ability. Polymers (Basel) 2022; 14:polym14173523. Abstract
To provide a safe and effective supplement of the essential trace element selenium, we focused on the biosynthesis of nanoselenium (SeNPs) via probiotics. A novel kind of exopolymer-functionalized nanoselenium (SeEPS), whose average size was 67.0 ± 0.6 nm, was produced by Bacillus subtilis SR41, whereas the control consisted of exopolymers without selenium (EPS). Chemical composition analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) confirmed that SeEPS and EPS shared similar polysaccharide characteristic groups, such as COO- and C=O, and contained not only 45.2–45.4% of sugars but also 23.5–24.7% of proteins and some lipids. Both SeEPS and EPS were primarily composed of mannose, amino glucose, ribose, glucose and galactose. Furthermore, to identify the biologically active component of SeEPS, three kinds of selenium particles with different stabilizers [Se(0), bovine serum albumin-Se and EPS-Se] were synthesized chemically, and their ability to scavenge free radicals in vitro was compared with that of SeEPS and EPS. The results revealed that EPS itself exhibited weak superoxide and hydroxyl radical scavenging abilities. Nevertheless, SeEPS had superior antioxidant properties compared to all other products, possibly due to the specific structure of SeNPs and exopolymers. Our results suggested that exopolymer-functionalized SeNPs with specific monosaccharide composition and structure could eventually find a potential application as an antioxidant.

Abstract
The inorganic selenium is absorbed and utilized inefficiently, and the range between toxicity and demand is narrow, so the application is strictly limited. Selenium nanoparticles have higher bioactivity and biosafety properties, including increased antioxidant and anticancer properties. Thus, producing and applying eco-friendly, non-toxic selenium nanoparticles in feed additives is crucial. Bacillus paralicheniformis Y4 was investigated for its potential ability to produce selenium nanoparticles and the activity of carboxymethyl cellulases. The selenium nanoparticles were characterized using zeta potential analyses, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additionally, evaluations of the anti-α-glucosidase activity and the antioxidant activity of the selenium nanoparticles and the ethyl acetate extracts of Y4 were conducted. B. paralicheniformis Y4 exhibited high selenite tolerance of 400 mM and the selenium nanoparticles had an average particle size of 80 nm with a zeta potential value of −35.8 mV at a pH of 7.0, suggesting that the particles are relatively stable against aggregation. After 72 h of incubation with 5 mM selenite, B. paralicheniformis Y4 was able to reduce it by 76.4%, yielding red spherical bio-derived selenium nanoparticles and increasing the carboxymethyl cellulase activity by 1.49 times to 8.96 U/mL. For the first time, this study reports that the carboxymethyl cellulase activity of Bacillus paralicheniforis was greatly enhanced by selenite. The results also indicated that B. paralicheniformis Y4 could be capable of ecologically removing selenite from contaminated sites and has great potential for producing selenium nanoparticles as feed additives to enhance the added value of agricultural products.

Abstract
Among the trace elements, selenium (Se) has great demand as a health supplement. Compared to its other forms, selenium nanoparticles have minor toxicity, superior reactivity, and excellent bioavailability. The present study was conducted to produce selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) via a biosynthetic approach using probiotic Bacillus subtilis BSN313 in an economical and easy manner. The BSN313 exhibited a gradual increase in Se reduction and production of SeNPs up to 5–200 µg/mL of its environmental Se. However, the capability was decreased beyond that concentration. The capacity for extracellular SeNP production was evidenced by the emergence of red color, then confirmed by a microscopic approach. Produced SeNPs were purified, freeze-dried, and subsequently characterized systematically using UV–Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, Zetasizer, SEM–EDS, and TEM techniques. SEM–EDS analysis proved the presence of selenium as the foremost constituent of SeNPs. With an average particle size of 530 nm, SeNPs were shown to have a −26.9 (mV) zeta potential and −2.11 µm cm/Vs electrophoretic mobility in water. SeNPs produced during both the 24 and 48 h incubation periods showed good antioxidant activity in terms of DPPH and ABST scavenging action at a concentration of 150 µg/mL with no significant differences (p > 0.05). Moreover, 200 µg/mL of SeNPs showed antibacterial reactivity against Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 9027, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 25923. In the future, this work will be helpful to produce biogenic SeNPs using probiotic Bacillus subtilis BSN313 as biofactories, with the potential for safe use in biomedical and nutritional applications.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential element to human health that can be obtained in nature through several sources. In the human body, it is incorporated into selenocysteine, an amino acid used to synthesize several selenoproteins, which have an active center usually dependent on the presence of Se. Although Se shows several beneficial properties in human health, it has also a narrow therapeutic window, and therefore the excessive intake of inorganic and organic Se-based compounds often leads to toxicity. Nanoparticles based on Se (SeNPs) are less toxic than inorganic and organic Se. They are both biocompatible and capable of effectively delivering combinations of payloads to specific cells following their functionalization with active targeting ligands. Herein, the main origin of Se intake, its role on the human body, and its primary biomedical applications are revised. Particular focus will be given to the main therapeutic targets that are explored for SeNPs in cancer therapies, discussing the different functionalization methodologies used to improve SeNPs stability, while enabling the extensive delivery of drug-loaded SeNP to tumor sites, thus avoiding off-target effects.

Abstract
The rise of antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics (AMR) as a healthcare crisis has led to a tremendous social and economic impact, whose damage poses a significant threat to future generations. Current treatments either are less effective or result in further acquired resistance. At the same time, several new antimicrobial discovery approaches are expensive, slow, and relatively poorly equipped for translation into the clinical world. Therefore, the use of nanomaterials is presented as a suitable solution. In particular, this review discusses selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) as one of the most promising therapeutic agents based in the nanoscale to treat infections effectively. This work summarizes the latest advances in the synthesis of SeNPs and their progress as antimicrobial agents using traditional and biogenic approaches. While physiochemical methods produce consistent nanostructures, along with shortened processing procedures and potential for functionalization of designs, green or biogenic synthesis represents a quick, inexpensive, efficient, and eco-friendly approach with more promise for tunability and versatility. In the end, the clinical translation of SeNPs faces various obstacles, including uncertain in vivo safety profiles and mechanisms of action and unclear regulatory frameworks. Nonetheless, the promise possessed by these metalloid nanostructures, along with other nanoparticles in treating bacterial infections and slowing down the AMR crisis, are worth exploring.

Biogenic Selenium Nanoparticles: A Fine Characterization to Unveil Their Thermodynamic Stability. NANOMATERIALS 2021; 11:nano11051195. Abstract
Among the plethora of available metal(loid) nanomaterials (NMs), those containing selenium are interesting from an applicative perspective, due to their high biocompatibility. Microorganisms capable of coping with toxic Se-oxyanions generate mostly Se nanoparticles (SeNPs), representing an ideal and green alternative over the chemogenic synthesis to obtain thermodynamically stable NMs. However, their structural characterization, in terms of biomolecules and interactions stabilizing the biogenic colloidal solution, is still a black hole that impairs the exploitation of biogenic SeNP full potential. Here, spherical and thermodynamically stable SeNPs were produced by a metal(loid) tolerant Micrococcus sp. Structural characterization obtained by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed that these SeNPs were surrounded by an organic material that contributed the most to their electrosteric stabilization, as indicated by Zeta (ζ) potential measurements. Proteins were strongly adsorbed on the SeNP surface, while lipids, polysaccharides, and nucleic acids more loosely interacted with SeNMs as highlighted by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and overall supported by multivariate statistical analysis. Nevertheless, all these contributors were fundamental to maintain SeNPs stable, as, upon washing, the NM-containing extract showed the arising of aggregated SeNPs alongside Se nanorods (SeNRs). Besides, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation unveiled how thiol-containing molecules appeared to play a role in SeO32− bioreduction, stress oxidative response, and SeNP stabilization.

Abstract
Bacillus amyloliquefaciens belongs to the genus Bacillus and family Baciliaceae. It is ubiquitously found in food, plants, animals, soil, and in different environments. In this review, the application of B. amyloliquefaciens in probiotic and prebiotic microbes in fermentation, synthesis, and hydrolysis of food compounds is discussed as well as further insights into its potential application and gaps. B. amyloliquefaciens is also a potential microbe in the synthesis of bioactive compounds including peptides and exopolysaccharides. In addition, it can synthesize antimicrobial compounds (e.g., Fengycin, and Bacillomycin Lb), which makes its novelty in the food sector greater. Moreover, it imparts and improves the functional, sensory, and shelf life of the end products. The hydrolysis of complex compounds including insoluble proteins, carbohydrates, fibers, hemicellulose, and lignans also shows that B. amyloliquefaciens is a multifunctional and potential microbe which can be applied in the food industry and in functional food processing.
