Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study seeks to identify signals of the male-female health-survival paradox in medieval London. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study uses skeletal data on age, sex, dental caries (n = 592) and antemortem tooth loss (n = 819) from adult individuals from medieval London cemeteries (c. 1200-1540 CE). The association between age and dental caries was assessed using binary logistic regression. The associations among age, time period (pre- vs. post-Black Death), oral biomarker (dental caries or antemortem tooth loss), and sex were tested using hierarchical log-linear analysis. RESULTS The analyses reveal significantly higher odds of dental caries with increasing adult ages, more older adults after the Black Death, different age distributions of dental caries between the sexes, and a greater decrease in the prevalence of dental caries for females after the Black Death. These results appear not to be an artifact of trends in AMTL. However, this study does not yield evidence suggesting that females experienced both a survival advantage and a decline in oral health at late adult ages after the Black Death relative to males. CONCLUSIONS These results do not provide evidence of the existence of a male-female health-survival paradox, but they do corroborate existing evidence of improvements in health in general in the aftermath of the Black Death. The decreased prevalence of dental caries after the Black Death may reflect dietary improvements or the effects of selective mortality during the epidemic.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the impact of dental care utilization status on the occurrence of fatal complications such as cerebral/cardiovascular disease (CVD) and infectious diseases in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis. This retrospective cohort study was performed using the Japanese claims database and included patients who first underwent hemodialysis between April 2014 and September 2020. The exposure variable of interest was the pattern of dental utilization, which was categorized into three groups, "dental treatment group", "preventive dental care group", and "no-dental visit group". The primary outcomes were the time interval until a composite end point of first major cardiovascular event (acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, or cerebral infarction) of infectious disease (pneumonia and sepsis). The secondary outcomes were the time interval until the incidence of each component of primary outcomes. Survival analyses, including log-rank tests and Cox proportional hazards regression analyses, were performed. Among the 10,873 patients who underwent the first dialysis treatment, 6152 were assigned to the no-dental visit group, 2221 to the dental treatment group, and 2500 to the preventive dental care group. The preventive dental care group had significantly lower hazard ratios (HRs) of the incidence of CVD (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 0.86, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.77-0.96) and infectious diseases (aHR: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.76-0.97). As for pneumonia, preventive dental care and dental treatment groups had significantly lower HRs (aHR: 0.74 and 0.80, 95% CI: 0.61-0.88, 0.66-0.96) than the no-dental visit group. This study demonstrated that dental visits for preventive dental care were associated with a significant risk reduction in CVD and infectious complications in patients with ESRD undergoing hemodialysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between the major periodontal bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN)-particularly with respect to galactose-deficient IgA1 (Gd-IgA1)-has not been fully elucidated. METHODS Saliva samples from 30 IgAN patients and 44 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) were subjected to analysis of P. gingivalis status via polymerase chain reaction using a set of P. gingivalis-specific primers. The associations between P. gingivalis presence and clinical parameters, including plasma Gd-IgA1, were analyzed in each group. RESULTS Compared with the CKD group, the IgAN group demonstrated significantly higher plasma Gd-IgA1 levels (p < 0.05). Compared with the P. gingivalis-negative subgroup, the P. gingivalis-positive subgroup exhibited significantly higher plasma Gd-IgA1 levels in both IgAN and CKD patients (p < 0.05). Additionally, among IgAN patients, the P. gingivalis-positive subgroup displayed significantly higher plasma Gd-IgA1 and urine protein levels, compared with the P. gingivalis-negative subgroup (p < 0.05). With respect to renal biopsy findings, the frequencies of segmental glomerulosclerosis and tubular atrophy/interstitial fibrosis were significantly greater in the P. gingivalis-positive subgroup than in the P. gingivalis-negative subgroup, according to the Oxford classification of IgAN (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest an association between the presence of P. gingivalis in the oral cavity and the pathogenesis of IgAN, mediated by increased levels of Gd-IgA1.

Abstract
Patients under renal replacement therapy (RRT) often show oral problems, including dry mouth, periodontal and dental diseases. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the caries burden in patients on RRT. Therefore, a systematic literature search based on the databases PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus was performed by two independent individuals in August 2022. Search terms were: "caries" AND "dialysis", "caries" AND "renal replacement therapy", "caries" AND "kidney". The systematic process was complemented by manual search. Studies on adult patients (age ≥ 18 years), treated by any form of RRT and explicitly reporting caries prevalence or incidence were checked for their eligibility and subsequently analyzed qualitatively. For all included studies, a quality appraisal was applied. From the systematic search, 653 studies were identified, of which 33 clinical investigations were included in the qualitative analysis. The majority (31 studies) of all included patients underwent hemodialysis (HD), with a sample size between 28 and 512 participants. Eleven studies investigated a healthy control group. Oral examinations were heterogeneous across studies; the caries burden was primarily assessed by decayed-(D-T), missing- and filled-teeth index (DMF-T). The number of decayed teeth ranged between 0.7 and 3.87 across studies. Only six out of these 11 studies found significant differences in caries prevalence/incidence between RRT and controls, whereby only four studies confirmed worse caries burden in RRT individuals. No information was provided on caries stadium (initial caries, advanced caries, invasive treatment need), caries activity or location (e.g., root caries) across studies. Most of the included studies were assessed to be of moderate quality. In conclusion, patients on RRT suffer from a high prevalence of dental caries. Alongside a need for further research in the field, improved, multidisciplinary, patient-centered dental care concepts are required to support dental and overall oral health in individuals on RRT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In patients with end stage, renal disease a high rate of morbidity and mortality is present. Studies suggest that end stage renal disease may affect oral health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to perform a scoping review on periodontal disease, dental caries, xerostomia, and hyposalivation in end stage renal disease patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A literature search (in PubMed and Embase.com) was performed up to September 29, 2020, in collaboration with a medical information specialist. Included outcome variables were the community periodontal index, probing pocket depth, gingival index, bleeding on probing, decayed-missing-filled-teeth, carious-absent-obturated index, Xerostomia Inventory and the (un)stimulated whole salivary flow rate. RESULTS Forty three out of 1293 studies were included in the final review comprising 7757 end stage renal disease patients. The average age was 58.3 ± 29.4 years. 28.2%-78.8% of patients reported xerostomia and the (un)stimulated salivary flow rates were significantly lower. Higher community periodontal index scores were measured in end stage renal disease patients. More decayed-missing-filled-teeth were recorded, but no differences were found between groups. CONCLUSIONS Xerostomia and hyposalivation were highly prevalent in end stage renal disease patients. Patients have more deepened pockets, but an equal number of carious teeth compared to healthy controls.

Abstract
Although large diameter vessels made of polyurethane materials have been widely used in clinical practice, the biocompatibility and long-term patency of small diameter artificial vessels have not been well addressed. Any technological innovation and advancement in small-diameter artificial blood vessels is of great interest to the biomedical field. Here a novel technique is used to produce artificial blood vessels with a caliber of less than 6 mm and a wall thickness of less than 0.5 mm by rotational exposure, and to form a bionic inner wall with a periodically micro-nano structure inside the tube by laser double-beam interference. The polyethylene glycol diacrylate used is a widely recognized versatile biomaterial with good hydrophilicity, biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. The effect of the bionic structure on the growth of hepatocellular carcinoma cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells was investigated, and it was demonstrated that the prepared vessels with the bionic structure could largely promote the endothelialization process of the cells inside them.
