Ecological change and conflict reduction led to a social circulatory system in ants

Behavioral innovations can be ecologically transformative for lineages that perform them and for their associated communities. Many ecologically dominant, superorganismal, and speciose ant lineages use mouth-to-mouth social regurgitation behavior - stomodeal trophallaxis - to share exogenous and endogenous materials within colonies. This behavior is less common in other species-poor, less cooperative ant lineages. How and why trophallaxis evolved and fixed in only some ant clades remains unclear, and whether this trait could be indicative of superorganismality has yet to be established. Here we show that trophallaxis evolved in two main events, in non-doryline formicoids around 130 Ma and in some ponerines around 90 Ma, lineages that today encompass 86% of all ant species. We found that trophallaxis evolved in lineages that began drinking sugary liquids and that had reduced intra-colonial conflict by constraining worker reproductive potential. Evolution of trophallaxis increased net diversification. Causal models indicate that trophallaxis required low reproductive conflict and contributed to the large colony sizes of the ants that use it. This suggests that the evolution of social regurgitation was enabled by both social conflict reduction and opportunistic inclusion of nectar and honeydew in the ant diet during the shifts in terrestrial ecosystems toward flowering plants.

Prey Status Affects Paralysis Investment in the Ponerine Ant Harpegnathos venator

Simple Summary

Some ants sting their prey to paralyze or kill them when foraging. Some studies have found that paralysis of prey may also be used in food storage. To further understand the foraging behavior of predatory ants and the underlying mechanism, we systematically observed the foraging behavior of Harpegnathos venator when provided with different types of food, different prey sizes, and different prey numbers, and we studied its paralysis behavior in relation to prey under different food supply conditions through controlled experiments. We found that the stings of Harpegnathos venator completely paralyzed the cockroaches. The stinging time was significantly longer at a higher prey activity level and for larger cockroaches. In addition, there was no significant difference in the stinging time of H. venator for different prey densities. It was much shorter for legless cockroaches than for normal cockroaches. The results showed that the longer the stinging time for similar cockroaches, the longer it took for the prey to revive and move. The results are helpful for further understanding the behavioral mechanism underlying prey storage in predatory insects.

Abstract

The paralysis behavior of some ponerine ants when foraging may be important for food storage and colony development. However, how workers invest in paralysis under different prey circumstances is often overlooked. Here, we report the prey-foraging behavior and paralysis behavior of Harpegnathos venator under different food supply conditions. Solitary hunting was the main foraging mode of H. venator, with occasional simple collective hunting. Nymphal cockroaches with high activity were the most attractive to H. venator. In the experiment, we found that the stings of H. venator completely paralyzed the cockroaches. The stinging time was significantly longer at a higher prey activity level and for larger cockroaches. In addition, there was no significant difference in the stinging time of H. venator for different prey densities. The results showed that the longer similar cockroaches were stung, the longer it took for them to revive and move. These results are helpful for further understanding the behavioral mechanism underlying the food storage of live prey by predatory insects.

Bipartite network analysis of ant-task associations reveals task groups and absence of colonial daily activity

Social insects are one of the best examples of complex self-organized systems exhibiting task allocation. How task allocation is achieved is the most fascinating question in behavioural ecology and complex systems science. However, it is difficult to comprehensively characterize task allocation patterns due to behavioural complexity, such as the individual variation, context dependency and chronological variation. Thus, it is imperative to quantify individual behaviours and integrate them into colony levels. Here, we applied bipartite network analyses to characterize individual-behaviour relationships. We recorded the behaviours of all individuals with verified age in ant colonies and analysed the individual-behaviour relationship at the individual, module and network levels. Bipartite network analysis successfully detected the module structures, illustrating that certain individuals performed a subset of behaviours (i.e. task groups). We confirmed age polyethism by comparing age between modules. Additionally, to test the daily rhythm of the executed tasks, the data were partitioned between daytime and nighttime, and a bipartite network was re-constructed. This analysis supported that there was no daily rhythm in the tasks performed. These findings suggested that bipartite network analyses could untangle complex task allocation patterns and provide insights into understanding the division of labour.

Evidence for a thoracic crop in the workers of some Neotropical Pheidole species (Formicidae: Myrmicinae)

The ability of ant colonies to transport, store, and distribute food resources through trophallaxis is a key advantage of social life. Nonetheless, how the structure of the digestive system has adapted across the ant phylogeny to facilitate these abilities is still not well understood. The crop and proventriculus, structures in the ant foregut (stomodeum), have received most attention for their roles in trophallaxis. However, potential roles of the esophagus have not been as well studied. Here, we report for the first time the presence of an auxiliary thoracic crop in Pheidole aberrans and Pheidole deima using X-ray micro-computed tomography and 3D segmentation. Additionally, we describe morphological modifications involving the endo- and exoskeleton that are associated with the presence of the thoracic crop. Our results indicate that the presence of a thoracic crop in major workers suggests their potential role as repletes or live food reservoirs, expanding the possibilities of tasks assumed by these individuals in the colony. Our contribution emphasizes the utility of combining data from external and internal morphology to better understand functional and behavioral mechanisms.
