Abstract
BACKGROUND Food safety has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Harmful gases often produced during food storage have devastating effects on human health and ecosystems, and identifying and detecting them is essential. To date, many traditional methods have been used to monitor the freshness of food products. These methods have high precision and sensitivity, but their application to daily life is limited because they are time-consuming and require complex instruments. Therefore, the development of simple, rapid, and low-cost methods for evaluating food freshness is essential. RESULTS Hydrogel-based colorimetric artificial olfactory systems have attracted a great deal of attention and have been widely applied in the field of food safety testing in recent years. The system has the advantages of a low detection limit, portability, onsite monitoring, high precision and rapid detection. This superiority makes the colorimetric hydrogel gas sensor a strong contender for improving food safety detection. This paper reviews the application of a hydrogel-based colorimetric artificial olfactory system for detecting hazardous gases for food safety purposes. The main sections of this review succinctly discuss the construction principles and operational mechanisms of the colorimetric artificial olfactory system. Additionally, it delves into the selection and preparation methodologies of hydrogel materials. This paper focuses on advancements in hydrogel-based colorimetric artificial olfactory systems for detecting gases, such as ammonia, biogenic amines, and H2S that are relevant to food safety. Furthermore, this work outlines the challenges encountered by this artificial olfactory system and proposes potential solutions to overcome them. SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY The study presented in this paper demonstrates the potential application of a hydrogel-based colorimetric artificial olfactory system for food safety detection, and complements the previous review of colorimetric hydrogel gas sensors for the detection of spoilage gases in food products and serves as a reference for further advanced research and applications in this field.

Abstract
The rapid evolution of nanotechnology has catalyzed significant advancements in the design and application of nano-sensors, particularly within the food industry, where ensuring safety and quality is of paramount concern. This review explores the multifaceted role of nano-sensors constructed from diverse nanomaterials in detecting foodborne pathogens and toxins, offering a comprehensive analysis of their operational principles, sensitivity, and specificity. Nano-sensors leverage unique physical and chemical properties at the nanoscale to enhance the detection of microbial contamination, actively contributing to food safety protocols. With applications ranging from real-time monitoring of pathogenic bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella, to assessing environmental factors affecting food quality, these innovative devices demonstrate unparalleled advantages over conventional detection methods. Recent research illustrates the integration of nano-sensors with biosensing techniques, enabling multiplex analysis and rapid detection. Furthermore, the review addresses current challenges in the commercialization and regulatory landscape of nano-sensor technology, emphasizing the need for ongoing research to optimize their performance and facilitate widespread adoption in food safety systems. Overall, the incorporation of nano-sensors represents a transformative approach to safeguarding public health by proactively managing food safety risks and enhancing the efficiency of food quality assurance processes.

Abstract
Against the backdrop of rapid advancements in 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, there is an urgent need to upgrade food sensing systems to achieve automation, digitalization, and intelligence. However, this transformation process faces numerous challenges. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), as an emerging energy conversion and sensing technology, play a crucial role in this context. They not only provide power to functional devices but also serve as sensors in multifunctional self-powered food sensing systems, capable of detecting various physical and chemical information. This review explores the development of TENGs in the field of food sensing, focusing on the working principles of their self-powered sensing. The review also systematically organizes and classifies the material and device designs used for TENGs in various food applications. Based on the performance of TENGs, a detailed introduction is provided on the specific applications of self-powered food sterilization, self-powered food quality monitoring, and self-powered taste sensing in the field of food safety. Finally, this paper discusses the challenges and corresponding strategies of TENGs in the food sensing field. The aim is to further promote unmanned and smart services and management in the food sector and to provide new research perspectives.

Abstract
Nanosensors have become an indispensable tool in the food sector due to their specificity and sensitivity. The biosensor consists of a transducer coupled with a biorecognition component to transform biological signal into digital signal. Nanobiosensors have been widely used for sensing toxic chemicals such as pesticide residues and pathogenic microbes owing to their accurate sensitivity in an affordable manner, which gives more hope to the food industry on their applications. It employs nanocarriers to bind to impurities and pollutants, as well as food-borne microorganisms and their resulting toxins, such as mycotoxins. This modern technology ensures food safety in food processing industries. Nowadays, nanoparticle-immobilized sensors act as spot indicators to improve smart food packing technology. Certain types of nanobiosensors are deployed to monitor food product manufacture till packaging and to check the freshness of the product till spoilage identification. They are mainly using enzyme catalysts, which are highly sensitive to extreme environmental conditions. As a result, there is a greater evaluation requirement in nanosensor technology to adopt any temperature, pH, or other difficult parameters. Its stability, while in contact with food substrates, is another criterion that needs to be regularized. Within this framework, this review delves into the latest developments in nanobiosensors and the obstacles encountered during their use across different food industries.

Abstract
Current analytical methods utilized for food safety inspection requires improvement in terms of their cost-efficiency, speed of detection, and ease of use. Sensor array technology has emerged as a food safety assessment method that applies multiple cross-reactive sensors to identify specific targets via pattern recognition. When the sensor arrays are fabricated with nanomaterials, the binding affinity of analytes to the sensors and the response of sensor arrays can be remarkably enhanced, thereby making the detection process more rapid, sensitive, and accurate. Data analysis is vital in converting the signals from sensor arrays into meaningful information regarding the analytes. As the sensor arrays can generate complex, high-dimensional data in response to analytes, they require the use of machine learning algorithms to reduce the dimensionality of the data to gain more reliable outcomes. Moreover, the advances in handheld smart devices have made it easier to read and analyze the sensor array signals, with the advantages of convenience, portability, and efficiency. While facing some challenges, the integration of artificial intelligence with nanosensor arrays holds promise for enhancing food safety monitoring.

Abstract
Chemiresistive gas sensors based on metal oxides have been widely applied in industrial monitoring, medical diagnosis, environmental pollutant detection, and food safety. To further enhance the gas sensing performance, researchers have worked to modify the structure and function of the material so that it can adapt to different gas types and environmental conditions. Among the numerous gas-sensitive materials, n-type TiO2 semiconductors are a focus of attention for their high stability, excellent biosafety, controllable carrier concentration, and low manufacturing cost. This Perspective first introduces the sensing mechanism of TiO2 nanostructures and composite TiO2-based nanomaterials and then analyzes the relationship between their gas-sensitive properties and their structure and composition, focusing also on technical issues such as doping, heterojunctions, and functional applications. The applications and challenges of TiO2-based nanostructured gas sensors in food safety, medical diagnosis, environmental detection, and other fields are also summarized in detail. Finally, in the context of their practical application challenges, future development technologies and new sensing concepts are explored, providing new ideas and directions for the development of multifunctional intelligent gas sensors in various application fields.

Abstract
The freshnessof the food is a major issue because spoiled food lacks critical nutrients for growth and could be harmful to human health if consumed directly. Nanomaterials are captivating due to their unique properties like large surface area, high selectivity, small dimension, great biocompatibility and conductivity, real-time onsite analysis, etc. which give them an advantage over conventional evaluation techniques. Despite these advantages of nanomaterials used in food safety and their preservation, food products can still get affected by various environmental factors (like pH, temperature, etc.), making the use of time-temperature indicators more condescending. This review is a comprehensive study on food safety, its causes, the responsible analytes, their remedies by various nanomaterials, the development of various nanosensors, and the various challenges faced in maintaining food safety standards to reduce the risk of contaminants.

Abstract
The global market of food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products requires continuous tracking of harmful ingredients and microbial contamination for the sake of the safety of both products and consumers as these products greatly dominate the consumer's health, directly or indirectly. The existence, survival, and growth of microorganisms in the product may lead to physicochemical degradation or spoilage and may infect the consumer at another end. It has become a challenge for industries to produce a product that is safe, self-stable, and has high nutritional value, as many factors such as physical, chemical, enzymatic, or microbial activities are responsible for causing spoilage to the product within the due course of time. Thus, preservatives are added to retain the virtue of the product to ensure its safety for the consumer. Nowadays, the use of synthetic/artificial preservatives has become common and has not been widely accepted by consumers as they are aware of the fact that exposure to preservatives can lead to adverse effects on health, which is a major area of concern for researchers. Naturally occurring phenolic compounds appear to be extensively used as bio-preservatives to prolong the shelf life of the finished product. Based on the convincing shreds of evidence reported in the literature, it is suggested that phenolic compounds and their derivatives have massive potential to be investigated for the development of new moieties and are proven to be promising drug molecules. The objective of this article is to provide an overview of the significant role of phenolic compounds and their derivatives in the preservation of perishable products from microbial attack due to their exclusive antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties and the problems associated with the use of synthetic preservatives in pharmaceutical products. This article also analyzes the recent trends in preservation along with technical norms that regulate the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical products in the developing countries.

Abstract
Metal ions play a crucial role in many biochemical processes, and when in a state of scarcity or surplus, they can lead to various diseases. Therefore, the development of a selective, sensitive, cost-effective, and fast-responding sensor to detect metal ions is critical for in vitro medical diagnostics. In recent years, fluorescent sensors have been extensively investigated as potent kits for the effective assessment of metal ions in living systems due to their high sensitivity, selectivity, ability to perform real-time, non-invasive monitoring, and versatility. This review is an overview of recent advances in fluorescent sensors for the detection and imaging of metal ions in biosystems from 2018 to date. Specifically, we discuss their application in detecting essential metal ions and non-essential metal ions for in vitro diagnostics, living cell imaging, and in vivo imaging. Finally, we summarize remaining challenges and offer a future outlook on the above topics.

Abstract
Modern life quality is strongly supported by the advances made in biosensors, which has been attributed to their crucial and viable contribution in point-of-care (POC) technology developments. POC devices are exploited for the fast tracing of disease progression, rapid analysis of water, and food quality assessment. Blood glucose meters, home pregnancy strips, and COVID-19 rapid tests all represent common examples of successful biosensors. Biosensors can provide great specificity due to the incorporation of selective bio-recognition elements and portability at significantly reduced costs. Electrochemical biosensor platforms are one of the most advantageous of these platforms because they offer many merits, such as being cheap, selective, specific, rapid, and portable. Furthermore, they can be incorporated into smartphones and various analytical approaches in order to increase their sensitivity and many other properties. As a very broad and interdisciplinary area of research and development, biosensors include all disciplines and backgrounds from materials science, chemistry, physics, medicine, microbiology/biology, and engineering. Accordingly, in this state-of-the-art article, historical background alongside the long journey of biosensing construction and development, starting from the Clark oxygen electrode until reaching highly advanced wearable stretchable biosensing devices, are discussed. Consequently, selected examples among the miscellaneous applications of nanobiosensors (such as microbial detection, cancer diagnosis, toxicity analysis, food quality-control assurance, point of care, and health prognosis) are described. Eventually, future perspectives for intelligent biosensor commercialization and exploitation in real-life that is going to be supported by machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) are stated.

Abstract
The major challenge of modern agriculture is to satisfy actual and future global food demands efficiently. This great challenge requires combined efforts to preserve natural resources to support intensive agriculture while limiting detrimental impacts on the environment. One of these efforts is using nanobiotechnology. Nanobiotechnology is the application of nanotechnology in biological science. Nanotechnology is the science of manipulating materials at the nanoscale (1 nm = 10ˉ⁹ m). This review summarizes the potential of nanobiotechnology for its importance in increasing yield in agriculture and providing consumers with quality and contamination-free food. In the agriculture sector, nanobiotechnology is necessarily used as fertilizers (nanofertilizers) for crop yield improvement, pesticides (nanopesticides) for crop protection, and nanobiosensors for the detection of crop pathogens, soil conditions, and vegetation conditions, Similarly, intelligent food packaging, and detection of pathogens, adulterants, and toxins in food are its importance in the food sector.

Abstract
Single-stranded peptide nucleic acid (PNA) probes interact strongly with several nanomaterials, and the interaction was diminished in the presence of complementary nucleic acid targets which forms the basis of many nucleic acid sensing platforms. As opposed to the negatively charged DNA probes, the charges on the PNA probes may be fine-tuned by incorporating amino acids with charged side chains. The contribution of electrostatic effects to the interaction between PNA probes and nanomaterials has been largely overlooked. This work reveals that electrostatic effects substantially enhanced the quenching of dye-labeled conformationally constrained pyrrolidinyl PNA probes by several nanomaterials including graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and silver nanoparticles. The fluorescence quenching and the color change from red to purple in the case of AuNPs because of aggregation were inhibited in the presence of complementary nucleic acid targets. Thus, fluorescence and colorimetric assays for DNA and RNA that can distinguish even single-base-mismatched nucleic acids with improved sensitivity over conventional DNA probes were established. Both the GO- and AuNP-based sensing platforms have been successfully applied for the detection of real DNA and RNA samples in vitro and in living cells. This study emphasizes the active roles of electrostatic effects in the PNA-nanomaterial interactions, which paves the way toward improving the performance of PNA-nanomaterial based assays of nucleic acids.

Abstract
In the last few decades, the vast potential of nanomaterials for biomedical and healthcare applications has been extensively investigated. Several case studies demonstrated that nanomaterials can offer solutions to the current challenges of raw materials in the biomedical and healthcare fields. This review describes the different nanoparticles and nanostructured material synthesis approaches and presents some emerging biomedical, healthcare, and agro-food applications. This review focuses on various nanomaterial types (e.g., spherical, nanorods, nanotubes, nanosheets, nanofibers, core-shell, and mesoporous) that can be synthesized from different raw materials and their emerging applications in bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, tissue engineering, antimicrobial, and agro-foods. Depending on their morphology (e.g., size, aspect ratio, geometry, porosity), nanomaterials can be used as formulation modifiers, moisturizers, nanofillers, additives, membranes, and films. As toxicological assessment depends on sizes and morphologies, stringent regulation is needed from the testing of efficient nanomaterials dosages. The challenges and perspectives for an industrial breakthrough of nanomaterials are related to the optimization of production and processing conditions.

Abstract
Nanomaterials (NMs) are emerging novel tools for preserving quality, enhancing shelf life, and ensuring food safety. Owing to the distinctive physicochemical characters, engineered NMs under varying sizes and dimensions have great potentials for application in the manufacturing, packaging, processing, and safety of quality agrifood. The promise of various kinds of novel NMs that are useful for food industries has opened a possibility of a new revolution in agroprocessing industries in both the emerging and advanced nations. The rapid advancement of nanoscience has provided a great impact on material science that has allowed researchers to understand every aspect of molecular complexity and its functions in life sciences. The reduced size of NMs that increase the surface area is useful in the specific target of different organs, and biodegradable nanospheres are helpful in the transport of bioactive molecules across the cellular barriers. However, nanotechnology creates a great revolution in several sections including agriculture and food industry and also reduces environmental pollution, while the toxicity of some NMs in the food industry poses a great concern to researchers for their greater application. However, most of the developed countries have regulatory control acts but developing countries do not have them yet. Therefore, for the safe use of NMs and also to minimize the health and environmental risks in both the developed and developing countries, it is indispensable to recognize the toxicity-constructed, toxicodynamic, and toxicokinetic features of NMs, which should carefully be emphasized at the home and industrial levels. The current study highlights the updates of the NMs to safeguard the quality and nutritional safety of foods at home and also at the industrial level.

Abstract
The need for a healthy market in the rapid and accurate screening of a variety of pathogenic agents and toxins in the environment and food has led to an increase in the development of new biosensors, which have ideal characteristics, such as high sensitivity and specificity with rapid detection and simple preparation of the sample. Among the food contaminants, mycotoxins have been identified as a major challenge for the food industry, and rapid and accurate detection has attracted the attention of food inspection and monitoring organisations. In this study, a nanomolecular detection method is described using aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)-specific aptamers attached to streptavidin-coated magnetic nanoparticles. A prominent feature of the AFB1-specific aptamers is a guanine-rich (G-rich) sequence with a G-quadruplex structure after capturing AFB1 molecules and mimicking peroxidase activity. The enzymatic reaction evaluated in the presence of chromogenic substrate and measurement is done by a smartphone-specific application for colorimetric measurement. The results indicated that the assay could measure AFB1 in rice, flour, seed, maize, and pistachio. In addition, the application of hybrid nanomaterial technology resulting from the binding of biotin-labelled aptamers to the surface of streptavidin-coated magnetic nanoparticles minimises preparation and treatment of samples, improves results, and consequently reduces false negative and positive responses in the detection field. This study may eventually lead to the design and development of a fast, sensitive, specific, and on-site AFB1-based nanomolecular colorimetric detection system via a smartphone-based application that can be readily accessible to all applicants, from professionals to manufacturers of foodstuffs.

Abstract
Surfactants, whose existence has been recognized as early as 2800 BC, have had a long history with the development of human civilization. With the rapid development of nanotechnology in the latter half of the 20th century, breakthroughs in nanomedicine and food nanotechnology using nanoparticles have been remarkable, and new applications have been developed. The technology of surfactant-coated nanoparticles, which provides new functions to nanoparticles for use in the fields of nanomedicine and food nanotechnology, is attracting a lot of attention in the fields of basic research and industry. This review systematically describes these "surfactant-coated nanoparticles" through various sections in order: 1) surfactants, 2) surfactant-coated nanoparticles, application of surfactant-coated nanoparticles to 3) nanomedicine, and 4) food nanotechnology. Furthermore, current progress and problems of the technology using surfactant-coated nanoparticles through recent research reports have been discussed.

Abstract
The issue of medication noncompliance has resulted in major risks to public safety and financial loss. The new omnipresent medicine enabled by the Internet of things offers fascinating new possibilities. Additionally, an in-home healthcare station (IHHS), it is necessary to meet the rapidly increasing need for routine nursing and on-site diagnosis and prognosis. This article proposes a universal and preventive strategy to drug management based on intelligent and interactive packaging (I2Pack) and IMedBox. The controlled delamination material (CDM) seals and regulates wireless technologies in novel medicine packaging. As such, wearable biomedical sensors may capture a variety of crucial parameters via wireless communication. On-site treatment and prediction of these critical factors are made possible by high-performance architecture. The user interface is also highlighted to make surgery easier for the elderly, disabled, and patients. Land testing incorporates and validates an approach for prototyping I2Pack and iMedBox. Additionally, sustainability, increased product safety, and quality standards are crucial throughout the life sciences. To achieve these standards, intelligent packaging is also used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. These technologies will continuously monitor the quality of a product and communicate with the user. Data carriers, indications, and sensors are the three most important groups. They are not widely used at the moment, although their potential is well understood. Intelligent packaging should be used in these sectors and the functionality of the systems and the values presented in this analysis.

Abstract
A rapid increase in world population is leading to the rise in global demand of food and agriculture (agri) products. Nanotechnology and its applications have emerged as one of the most pioneering and promising technology for transforming conventional food and agri industries, with the aim of sustainable farming, improving the food security, quality and safety which could revolutionize the food and agri industries. Current developments in nanotechnology have led to the new paths progressively and bringing the radical changes the way food is perceived throughout the farming, transportation, processing, packaging, storage, monitoring and consumption. This review brings the current updates on novel nanomaterials in food and agri industries. Emphasis is given on the importance of nanotechnological applications, offering complete food solutions from farm to fork; including nutraceutical and functional foods, improving bioavailability, efficiency, nutritional status, nano-additives, food texture, color, taste and packaging. Agricultural sector also witnessed several nano-based products, such as nano-fertilizer, nano-pesticide, nano growth promoters and many more for the development of sustainable farming and crop improvement. Despite of numerous advantages of nanotechnology, there are still toxicity challenges, safety concerns, which needs to be addressed and demands transformations in regulatory policies. Rapid development is projected to transform several foods and agri sectors, with rapid increase in market stake and investment. Government agencies, private research centers as well as academicians are also coming together to explore the benefits of nanotechnology to improve food scarcity in the coming years.

Abstract
Over the past decade, there has been an increasing demand for “ready-to-cook” and “ready-to-eat” foods, encouraging food producers, food suppliers, and food scientists to package foods with minimal processing and loss of nutrients during food processing. Following the increasing trend in the customer’s demands for minimally processed foodstuffs, this underscores the importance of promising interests toward industrial applications of novel and practical approaches in food. Along with substantial progress in the emergence of “nanoscience”, which has turned into the call of the century, the efficacy of conventional packaging has faded away. Accordingly, there is a wide range of new types of packaging, including electronic packaging machines, flexible packaging, sterile packaging, metal containers, aluminum foil, and flexographic printing. Hence, it has been demonstrated that these novel approaches can economically improve food safety and quality, decrease the microbial load of foodborne pathogens, and reduce food spoilage. This review study provides a comprehensive overview of the most common chemical or natural nanocomposites used in food packaging that can extend food shelf life, safety and quality. Finally, we discuss applying materials in the production of active and intelligent food packaging nanocomposite, synthesis of nanomaterial, and their effects on human health.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has brought speculations on possible transmission routes of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causal agent of the pandemic. Air pollution has been linked to increased risks of COVID-19 infection and mortality rates in regions with poor air quality, yet no retrospective study has been reported on foodborne transmission of COVID-19. While studies have shown that low temperature could dramatically prolong the persistence on SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses, frozen and refrigerated foods have been widely overlooked as potential vectors in policy frameworks and risk mitigation strategies. Food transmission evidence has been disclosed in China early July 2020 by the detection of SARS-CoV-2 on frozen foods, including their packaging materials and storage environments, with two re-emergent outbreaks linked to contaminated food sources. The contamination risk is augmented by a complex farm-to-table process, which favors exposure to food workers and ambient environments. Moreover, the food cold-chain also promotes contamination because laboratory studies showed that SARS-CoV-2 remained highly stable under refrigerated, at 4 °C, and freezing conditions, from - 10 to - 80 °C, on fish, meat, poultry, and swine skin, during 14-21 days. While data are lacking on long-term survival and infectivity under these conditions, ample evidence has been shown on other coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-1. We therefore hypothesize that contaminated cold-storage foods may present a systematic risk for SARS-CoV-2 transmission between countries and regions. Here, we review the evidence, risk factors, current policy and knowledge gaps, on food contamination and foodborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
This paper exhibits a thorough review of the use of impedimetric sensors for the analysis of food quality. It helps to understand the contribution of some of the major types of impedimetric sensors that are used for this application. The deployment of impedimetric sensing prototypes has been advantageous due to their wide linear range of responses, detection of the target analyte at low concentrations, good stability, high accuracy and high reproducibility in the results. The choice of these sensors was classified on the basis of structure and the conductive material used to develop them. The first category included the use of nanomaterials such as graphene and metallic nanowires used to form the sensing devices. Different forms of graphene nanoparticles, such as nano-hybrids, nanosheets, and nano-powders, have been largely used to sense biomolecules in the micro-molar range. The use of conductive materials such as gold, copper, tungsten and tin to develop nanowire-based prototypes for the inspection of food quality has also been shown. The second category was based on conventional electromechanical circuits such as electronic noses and other smart systems. Within this sector, the standardized systems, such as electronic noses, and LC circuit -based systems have been explained. Finally, some of the challenges posed by the existing sensors have been listed out, along with an estimate of the increase in the number of sensors employed to assess food quality.

Abstract
The efficient progress in nanotechnology has transformed many aspects of food science and the food industry with enhanced investment and market share. Recent advances in nanomaterials and nanodevices such as nanosensors, nano-emulsions, nanopesticides or nanocapsules are intended to bring about innovative applications in the food industry. In this review, the current applications of nanotechnology for packaging, processing, and the enhancement of the nutritional value and shelf life of foods are targeted. In addition, the functionality and applicability of food-related nanotechnologies are also highlighted and critically discussed in order to provide an insight into the development and evaluation of the safety of nanotechnology in the food industry.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is a rapidly developing toolbox that provides solutions to numerous challenges in the food industry and meet public demands for healthier and safer food products. The diversity of nanostructures and their vast, tunable functionality drives their inclusion in food products and packaging materials to improve their nutritional quality through bioactive fortification and probiotics encapsulation, enhance their safety due to their antimicrobial and sensing capabilities and confer novel sensorial properties. In this food nanotechnology state-of-the-art communication, matrix materials with particular focus on food-grade components, existing and novel production techniques, and current and potential applications in the fields of food quality, safety and preservation, nutrient bioaccessibility and digestibility will be detailed. Additionally, a thorough analysis of potential strategies to assess the safety of these novel nanostructures is presented.

Abstract
Multiplexed surface encoding is achieved by positioning two different sizes of gold nanocubes on gold surfaces with precisely defined locations for each particle via template-confined, DNA-mediated nanoparticle assembly. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, cubes with 86 and 63 nm edge lengths are assembled into arrangements that physically and spectrally encrypt two sets of patterns in the same location. These patterns can be decrypted by mapping the absorption intensity of the substrate at λ = 773 and 687 nm, respectively. This multiplexed encoding platform dramatically increases the sophistication and density of codes that can be written using colloidal nanoparticles, which may enable high-security, high-resolution encoding applications.

Abstract
In this paper, poly(acid chrome blue K) (PACBK)/AuNP/glassy carbon electrode (GCE), polysulfanilic acid (PABSA)/AuNP/GCE and polyglutamic acid (PGA)/CuNP/GCE were self-fabricated for the identification of rice wines of different brands. The physical and chemical characterization of the modified electrodes were obtained using scanning electron microscopy and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. The rice wine samples were detected by the modified electrodes based on multi-frequency large amplitude pulse voltammetry. Chronoamperometry was applied to record the response values, and the feature data correlating with wine brands were extracted from the original responses using the 'area method'. Principal component analysis, locality preserving projections and linear discriminant analysis were applied for the classification of different wines, and all three methods presented similarly good results. Extreme learning machine (ELM), the library for support vector machines (LIB-SVM) and the backpropagation neural network (BPNN) were applied for predicting wine brands, and BPNN worked best for prediction based on the testing dataset (R 2 = 0.9737 and MSE = 0.2673). The fabricated modified electrodes can therefore be applied to identify rice wines of different brands with pattern recognition methods, and the application also showed potential for the detection aspects of food quality analysis.
