Sports training in virtual reality with a focus on visual perception: a systematic review

Introduction

There is an increasing endeavor to use Virtual Reality (VR) technologies in sports training. Because visual perception is crucial for sports performance, it should also be considered in the development of VR tools. The aim of this review is to summarise the literature on the application fields and domains of sport in VR and to examine what needs to be considered when developing such VR training tools with regard to visual perception and its manipulation. Furthermore, it is still unclear to what extent the user's body or that of their teammates or opponents must be visualized in VR.

Methods

The literature search was conducted based on five databases: PsychInfo, Pubmed, Scopus, SportDiscus, and IEEE Explore. Review articles and original articles written in English and published between 1 January 2015 and 31 March 2024 were considered.

Results

Through a qualitative analysis of the selected research, we identified 12 reviews and 46 research articles. While the applications of VR in sports initially focussed on endurance sports at the beginning of the development of VR tools, within the last 5 years VR was found in almost all sports, such as team sports, martial arts, and individual sports. The most common sports domains in which VR is used are motor learning, training of visual perception, decision making processes, and anticipation skills, as well as many sport-specific trainings. The review provides an overview of the extent to which visual aids in VR can be used to optimize motor learning and training, also taking into account the transfer to the real world.

Discussion

VR offers many opportunities to visually support sports training and motor learning. It has been shown that training in VR based purely on visual perception can be successful in many sports and sports domains. The following visualization options are already being used: different viewing perspectives, variation of the demonstrated speed of movement, use of virtual mirrors, visualization of the necessary body parts, visual manipulation to identify important stimuli, display of movement trajectories, and graphic aids. In future, more studies should be conducted to compare training under virtual conditions with training under real conditions and to investigate transfer effects. Eye tracking should also be used for this purpose in order to compare visual perception in VR and in reality. Less is known about how VR training can be realized in terms of frequency, duration, and intensity and how VR training can be combined with training in the reality world.

CyPVICS: A framework to prevent or minimise cybersickness in immersive virtual clinical simulation

Cybersickness is a global issue affecting users of immersive virtual reality. However, there is no agreement on the exact cause of cybersickness. Taking into consideration how it can differ greatly from one person to another, it makes it even more difficult to determine the exact cause or find a solution. Because cybersickness excludes so many prospective users, including healthcare professionals, from using immersive virtual reality as a learning tool, this research sought to find solutions in existing literature and construct a framework that can be used to prevent or minimise cybersickness during immersive virtual clinical simulation (CyPVICS). The Bestfit Framework by Carrol and authors were used to construct the CyPVICS framework. The process started by conducting two separate literature searchers using the BeHEMoTh (for models, theories, and frameworks) and SPIDER (for primary research articles) search techniques. Once the literature searches were completed the models, theories and framework were used to construct a priori framework. The models' theories and frameworks were analysed to determine aspects relevant to causes, reducing, eliminating, and detecting cybersickness. The priori framework was expanded by, first coding the findings of the primary research study into the existing aspects of the priori framework. Once coded the aspects that could not be coded were added in the relevant category, for example causes. After reviewing 1567 abstracts and titles as part of the BeHEMoTh search string,19 full text articles, a total of 15 papers containing models, theories, and frameworks, were used to construct the initial CyPVICS framework. Once the initial CyPVICS was created, a total 904 primary research studies (SPIDER) were evaluated, based on their titles and abstracts, of which 100 were reviewed in full text. In total, 67 articles were accepted and coded to expand the initial CyPVICS framework. This paper presents the CyPVICS framework for use, not only in health professions' education, but also in other disciplines, since the incorporated models, theories, frameworks, and primary research studies were not specific to virtual clinical simulation.

Construction of Virtual Interaction Location Prediction Model Based on Distance Cognition

Due to the difference in distance cognition between virtual and real symmetric space, it is difficult for users to accurately interact with the target in the Digital Twin system. In order to study the cross-effects of interaction task, target size and target location on the accuracy of egocentric peripersonal distance cognition, a 2 × 5 × 9 × 5 asymmetric experiment was designed and carried out. There were two kinds of interaction tasks, five kinds of interaction target widths and nine kinds of spatial locations set to estimate the five egocentric peripersonal distances. Based on the experimental data, with interaction task, target width and the actual spatial location as independent variables and virtual interaction location as a dependent variable, the mapping model between the actual physical location and virtual interaction location of different interaction targets was constructed and evaluated by multiple linear regression method. The results showed that the prediction model constructed by stepwise regression method was simple and less computationally intensive, but it had better stability and prediction ability. The correlation coefficients R2 on xp, yp and zp were 0.994, 0.999 and 0.998, RMSE values were 2.583 cm, 1.0774 cm and 1.3155 cm, rRMSE values were 26.57%, 12.60% and 1.15%, respectively. The research of relevant experiments and the construction of models are helpful to solve the layout optimization problem of virtual interactive space in the Digital Twin system.
