Abstract
BACKGROUND A systematic review/meta-analysis synthesising the existing evidence regarding the prevalence of loneliness and social isolation among individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia is lacking. AIMS A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with loneliness and social isolation among individuals with MCI or dementia. METHOD A search was conducted in five established electronic databases. Observational studies reporting prevalence and, where available, factors associated with loneliness/isolation among individuals with MCI and individuals with dementia, were included. Important characteristics of the studies were extracted. RESULTS Out of 7427 records, ten studies were included. The estimated prevalence of loneliness was 38.6% (95% CI 3.7-73.5%, I2 = 99.6, P < 0.001) among individuals with MCI. Moreover, the estimated prevalence of loneliness was 42.7% (95% CI 33.8-51.5%, I² = 90.4, P < 0.001) among individuals with dementia. The estimated prevalence of social isolation was 64.3% (95% CI 39.1-89.6%, I² = 99.6, P < 0.001) among individuals with cognitive impairment. Study quality was reasonably high. It has been found that living alone and more depressive symptoms are associated with a higher risk of loneliness among individuals with dementia. CONCLUSIONS Social isolation, and in particular loneliness, are significant challenges for individuals with MCI and dementia. This knowledge can contribute to supporting successful ageing among such individuals. Future research in regions beyond Asia and Europe are clearly required. In addition, challenges such as chronic loneliness and chronic social isolation should be examined among individuals with MCI or dementia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study's objective was to determine the variables linked to loneliness in Indian adults 80 years of age and above (as well as stratified by sex). DESIGN Cross-sectional survey of the 2017-2018 Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) SETTING: Community-dwelling nationally representative population in India. PARTICIPANTS The analytic sample included 3163 community-dwelling individuals ≥ 80 years (excluding proxy interviews). MEASUREMENTS A single item was used to measure loneliness. We employed multiple linear regressions (with social, health, and demographic variables as explanatory variables). RESULTS Regressions found that higher food insecurity, higher perceived discrimination, higher functional disability, female sex, and lower life satisfaction increased the odds of higher loneliness among the oldest-old. The sex-stratified analysis found similar results. CONCLUSIONS Several demographic, health, and social-related factors were identified as being associated with higher loneliness. These factors can be targeted in addressing the onset and progression of loneliness in later life, particularly among the oldest old.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the experiences of people with dementia living alone or with others and how these may change over two years. DESIGN We analysed longitudinal data from three assessment waves, one year apart, in the British IDEAL cohort. SETTING Participants with mild-to-moderate dementia were recruited through National Health Service providers, where possible with a family caregiver, and interviewed at home. PARTICIPANTS The current analyses include 281 people with dementia living alone and 1,244 living with others at baseline; follow-up data were available for 200 and 965 respectively at time 2 and 144 and 696 respectively at time 3. For those living alone, 140 nonresident caregivers contributed at baseline, 102 at time 2 and 81 at time 3. For those living with others, 1,127 family caregivers contributed at baseline, 876 at time 2 and 670 at time 3. MEASUREMENTS Assessments covered: cognitive and functional ability; self-reported perceptions of health, mood, social engagement, quality of life, satisfaction with life and well-being; use of in-home and community care; and transitions into residential care. RESULTS People living alone tended to have better cognitive and functional ability and were more frequent users of in-home care. However, they experienced poorer physical, social, and psychological health and reduced quality of life, satisfaction with life, and well-being. These differences persisted over time and rates of transition into residential care were higher. CONCLUSIONS To facilitate continuing in place for people with dementia living alone, a dual focus on supporting functional ability and add ressing psychosocial needs is essential in the context of an enabling policy framework.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to explore the prevalence of depressive disorders in very old adults over time, in rural/urban environments, between men/women, as well as to explore other factors associated with depressive disorders. METHODS This study was conducted utilizing the GERDA-database data, which consists of four cohorts of 85, 90 and 95+ year olds living in Northern Sweden. Participants could reside independently or in residential care. Data collections took place between 2000 and 2017. Descriptive data and logistic regression models were utilized to explore data. RESULTS The prevalence of depressive disorders increased between 2000/02 and 2015/17 in all age groups, with the highest percentages observed in the 95+ age group, reaching 53.6 % in 2015/17. The prevalence varied from 20.3 % in those without dementia to 65.1 % in those with dementia. Sex or living in an urban/rural environment was not associated with an increased risk of depression in the fully adjusted models. Dementia and reduced capacity in activities of daily living were associated with depressive disorders among 85 and 90-year-olds, while living alone was associated with depressive disorders in the 95+ age group. LIMITATIONS Potentially limited generalizability, as this study took place in northern Sweden. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of depressive disorders among very old adults increases with age and the prevalence also increases throughout cohorts and time. These alarming rates of depressive disorders among the very old require immediate measures and further investigation. Future studies are needed to explore and monitor trends and to plan and design tailored interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To clarify the factors associated with loneliness in individuals aged 80 years and older in Germany (also stratified by sex). METHODS Data from the nationally representative "Old Age in Germany (D80+)" were employed. The analytic sample equaled 10,031 individuals. The D80+ study included community-dwelling and institutionalized individuals ≥ 80 years in Germany. Multiple linear regressions were used (with sociodemographic and health-related explanatory factors). The collection of data occurred between November 2020 and April 2021 (written questionnaire). RESULTS Higher loneliness was significantly associated with not being married (e.g., widowed compared to being married, β=0.37, p<.001), being institutionalized (β=0.33, p<.001), low education (high education compared to low education, β=-0.07, p<.01), a higher number of chronic conditions (β=0.02, p<.001), poor self-rated health (β=-0.19, p<.001) and greater functional impairment (β=0.15, p<.001). Sex-stratified regressions produced comparable results. However, low education was only associated with higher loneliness among men, but not women (with significant interaction: education x sex). CONCLUSION Several sociodemographic and health-related factors can contribute to loneliness among the oldest old in Germany, with sex-specific associations between education and loneliness. Overall, such knowledge can aid to address individuals with higher loneliness levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Loneliness and social isolation are well-known factors that worsen the symptoms among patients with mental disorders. Few previous studies have explored loneliness and social isolation among populations with mental disorders during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Therefore, our study examined the mental health impact of the pandemic on these population groups in terms of loneliness and social isolation. METHODS We used data from the Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Surveys, a large-scale online survey. Using multivariable logistic regression analysis, we calculated the odds ratios and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) of moderate-to-severe loneliness and high social isolation for major chronic diseases, including mental disorders, after adjusting for potential confounders. Calculations were performed for each type of mental disorder. Finally, calculations were performed to explore the association between moderate-to-severe loneliness or high social isolation and psychiatric symptoms among patients with mental disorders. RESULTS Of the 28,175 participants, 2021 (7.2 %) had a mental disorder. Mental disorders, especially depression and anxiety disorders, were found to be associated with a higher risk of moderate-to-severe loneliness and high social isolation. Patients with mental disorders who experienced moderate-to-severe loneliness and high social isolation were found to have exacerbated psychiatric symptoms. LIMITATION Our findings were obtained from a cross-sectional study design. CONCLUSIONS Patients with mental disorders were more vulnerable to moderate-to-severe loneliness and high social isolation during the pandemic, which contributed to the exacerbation of their symptoms. Depression and anxiety, in particular, were most likely to occur and required special attention.
