Responsible innovation in organisations – unpacking the effects of leader trustworthiness and organizational culture on employee creativity

Organizational Agility and Communicative Actions for Responsible Innovation: Evidence from manufacturing firms in South Korea

Responsible Innovation (RI) has increasingly attracted attention in academic research and business practice for UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Especially, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) highlights RI as a key concept to address how to institutionalize and organize action programs to solve grand challenges. However, we know little about the determinants of organizing RI in business. By applying agile management and stakeholder theory, this study proposes the critical organizational factors to implement RI, namely: Organizational Agility and Communicative Actions. Based on the large-scale data analysis of 13,234 South Korean manufacturing firms during the period between 1999 and 2019, this paper investigates whether and how organizational factors can affect RI in the Asian context, using the zero-inflated negative binomial regression model. Findings show that well-organized agile management and communicative actions with stakeholders are essential to enhance RI performance in a holistic view. This study contributes to the recently emerging field of RI and offers novel theoretical and practical implications for academics and practitioners regarding the underlying mechanism of organizing RI.

What drives responsible innovation in polluting small and medium enterprises?: an appraisal of leather manufacturing sector

Responsible innovation (RI) has always been a major topic in discussions about environmental concerns, such as the depletion of natural resources, economic advancement, climate change, and social responsibility. Still, its incorporation in the business field is in its early stages, particularly among small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This research aims to investigate the influence of internal and external drivers on RI and sustainable competitive advantage (SCA). The hypotheses of the study are examined through the Structural equation modeling (SEM) technique, and data were gathered from 291 owners/managers of leather manufacturing SMEs through simple random sampling. The study found that external drivers significantly and positively impact RI strategies, whereas internal drivers have an insignificant relationship with RI strategies. Furthermore, RI strategies have a significant and positive relationship with SCA. This study adds to the existing literature by focusing on predictors that impact SCA. This initial study examines the influence of external and internal drivers on RI and SCA using dynamic capability theory and institutional theory. On these bases, relevant recommendations have been made to promote RI from the perspective of the government and SMEs.

Responsible innovation in emerging markets’ SMEs: The role of alliance learning and absorptive capacity

This paper presents an examination of the role played by alliance learning in enabling emerging market small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to develop responsible innovation. SMEs based in emerging markets face significant challenges due to their weak resource base and the limited support they receive from formal institutions. In such a context, we argued that alliance learning takes a more prominent role in enabling these firms to develop responsible innovation via their absorptive capacity and sense-making competency. Drawn from 176 survey responses from SMEs originating from Pakistan, our findings shed light on the vital role played by alliance learning in enhancing SMEs’ responsible innovation. Specifically, the findings indicate that absorptive capacity acts as an important mechanism between alliance learning and responsible innovation. In addition, sense-making competency emerges as an important boundary condition and as a vital dynamic capability under which the effects of alliance learning on responsible innovation are stronger through the mediating mechanisms of absorptive capacity. These moderating-mediating findings contribute to the literature on dynamic capabilities and responsible innovation and provide important insights into the mechanisms and boundary conditions of responsible innovation in the context of emerging Asian markets.
