Abstract
Chitosan is a versatile and generous biopolymer obtained by alkaline deacetylation of naturally occurring chitin, the second most abundant biopolymer after cellulose. The excellent physicochemical properties of polycationic chitosan are attributed to the presence of varied functional groups such as amino, hydroxyl, and acetamido groups enabling researchers to tailor the structure and properties of chitosan by different methods such as crosslinking, grafting, copolymerization, composites, and molecular imprinting techniques. The prepared derivatives have diverse applications in the food industry, water treatment, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, textiles, and biomedical applications. In this review, numerous applications of chitosan and its derivatives in various fields have been discussed in detail with an insight into their structure-property relationship. This review article concludes and explains the chitosan's biocompatibility and efficiency that has been done so far with future usage and applications as well. Moreover, the possible mechanism of chitosan's activity towards several emerging fields such as energy storage, biodegradable packaging, photocatalysis, biorefinery, and environmental bioremediation are also discussed. Overall, this comprehensive review discusses the science and complete information behind chitosan's wonder function to improve our understanding which is much needful as well as will pave the way towards a sustainable future.

Abstract
Apple production is a dynamic agricultural system in which pesticides are applied recurrently to control pests and diseases in the orchards. Understanding the impact of such agents on non-target organisms is crucial to minimise unintended consequences while maintaining their use in crop protection. The aim was to test how fungicide, herbicide, elicitor, and their combinations affect the physiology of the epiphytic moss Hypnum cupressiforme that naturally occurs in orchards. Our results showed that both dodine and diflufenican applied separately had a strong negative effect on moss physiology reflected in significantly decreased photosynthetic pigment contents, maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, cell membrane integrity and dehydrogenase activity, and increased membrane lipid peroxidation, which indicates a high physiological stress. Furthermore, the combined use of herbicide and fungicide resulted in further deterioration of the physiological condition compared to the effects of both agents used separately. In many cases, the application of chitosan together with a diflufenican or dodine resulted in a reduction of the negative effects triggered by these agents. The compensatory effect was particularly pronounced in maintaining a low level of cell membrane permeability. Consequently, it can be concluded that chitosan could have a protective function against cell membrane damage in non-target mosses.

Abstract
Post-harvest losses of fruits and vegetables pose a significant challenge to the agriculture industry worldwide. To address this issue, researchers have turned to natural and eco-friendly solutions such as chitosan coatings. Chitosan, a biopolymer derived from chitin, has gained considerable attention due to its unique properties such as non-toxicity, biodegradability, biocompatibility and potential applications in post-harvest preservation. This review article provides an in-depth analysis of the current state of research on chitosan coatings for the preservation of fruits and vegetables. Moreover, it highlights the advantages of using chitosan coatings, including its antimicrobial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties, as well as its ability to enhance shelf-life and maintain the quality attributes of fresh product. Furthermore, the review discusses the mechanisms by which chitosan interacts with fruits and vegetables, elucidating its antimicrobial activity, modified gas permeability, enhanced physical barrier and induction of host defense responses. It also examines the factors influencing the effectiveness of chitosan coatings, such as concentration, molecular weight, deacetylation degree, pH, temperature, and application methods.

Abstract
Chemical nematicide is the most common method of controlling plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN). Given the negative impact of chemical nematicides on the environment and ecosystem, it is necessary to seek their alternatives and novel modes of application. Chitin oligo/polysaccharide (COPS), including chitosan and chitosan oligosaccharide, has unique biological properties. By producing ammonia, encouraging the growth of antagonistic bacteria, and enhancing crop tolerance, COPSs help suppress PPN growth during soil remediation. COPS is also an effective sustained-release carrier that can be used to overcome the shortcomings of nematicidal substances. This review summarizes the advancements of COPS research in nematode control from three perspectives of action mechanism as well as in slow-release carrier-loaded nematicides. Further, it discusses potential agricultural applications for nematode disease management.

Abstract
Excessive use of plant growth stimulants and pesticides is currently a considerable problem, especially in agriculture, horticulture, and arboriculture. Understanding the impacts of these compounds and their combinations on non-target organisms is crucial to minimize unintended consequences, while maintaining their use in plant protection. The aim of this study was to test how long-term spraying with different solutions of natural biostimulator chitosan, synthetic fungicide Switch 62.5 WG, and their combinations affects the physiology of epiphytic lichen Xanthoria parietina naturally occurring in fruit orchards and farmlands. We showed that fungicides composed of fludioxionil and cypronidil, as well as the combined use of such fungicides together with chitosan, can cause the considerable impairment of lichen physiology, and these disturbances relate to both algal and fungal partners of the symbiotic association. This negative effect was especially visible in the loss of cell membrane integrity, the high level of membrane lipid peroxidation, and changes in chlorophyll fluorescence parameters on the last day of the experiment. The combined use of these agents also leads to clear disturbances in the functioning of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, which was manifested by increased NADH dehydrogenase activity, while the use of these compounds separately led to a decrease in the activity of this enzyme. We concluded that the regular use of these agents in fruit tree cultivation may cause serious ecological consequences for epiphytic lichen communities as a result of the death of lichen thalli. This study suggests that the impact of some plant protection agents, both individually and in combinations, merits further attention in terms of their impact on non-target fungi.

Abstract
The effect of isonicotinic acid (INA) in a chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend on ripening-dependent changes of preserved green tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) was examined at room temperature. The results showed that CS/PVA/INA 0.5 mM and CS/PVA/INA 1.0 mM formulations retarded firmness loss and delayed the pigmentation parameters i.e., lycopene (LYP), total carotenes (TCs), and titratable acidity (TA). The CS/PVA/INA 0.5 mM and CS/PVA/INA 1.0 mM formulations were able to delay the increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) and total polyphenol (TP) contents. Furthermore, the peroxidase (POD), polyphenoloxidase (PPO), and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activities of tomatoes coated with CS/PVA/INA 0.5 mM and CS/PVA/INA 1.0 mM formulations were lower than those in other treatments. Meanwhile, the CS/PVA blend had the highest TP content, as well as the highest PPO and PAL activities, at the late stage of maturation. The UV analysis showed that the CS/PVA/INA blend film is a promising UV-protective food packaging material. The pure CS, PVA, and INA formulations, as well as the CS/PVA, CS/PVA/INA 0.5 mM, and CS/PVA/INA 1.0 mM formulations, were characterized by infrared (FTIR). The three polymer formulations showed strong antifungal activity against Alternaria alternata and Botrytis cinerea.

Abstract
Monilinia fructicola (Wint.) Honey is a plant pathogenic fungus that infects stone fruits such as peach, nectarine and plum, which are high demand cultivars found in Brazil. This pathogen may remain latent in the host, showing no apparent signs of disease, and consequently may spread to different countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity of hydroalcoholic extract (HydE) obtained from Lactarius deliciosus (L.) Sf. Gray a mushroom, against M. fructicola phytopathogenic-induced mycelial growth. In addition, the purpose of this study was to examine phytotoxicity attributed to HydE using Brassica oleracea seeds, as well as cytotoxic analysis of this extract on cells of mouse BALB/c monocyte macrophage cell line (J774A.1 cell line) (ATCC TIB-67). The L. deliciosus HydE inhibited fungal growth and reduced phytopathogen mycelial development at a concentration of 1.25 mg/ml. Our results demonstrated that the extract exhibited phytotoxicity as evidenced by (1) interference on germination percentage and rate index, (2) decreased root and initial growth measures, and (3) lower fresh weight of seedlings but no cytotoxicity in Vero cell lines. Data suggest that the use of the L. deliciosus extracts may be beneficial for fungal control without any apparent adverse actions on mouse BALB/c monocyte macrophage cell line (J774A.1 cell line) viability.
