Factors and sources influencing ionic composition of atmospheric condensate during winter season in lower troposphere over Delhi, India

Temporal and spatial shifts in the chemical composition of urban coastal rainwaters of Kuwait: The role of air mass trajectory and meteorological variables

The rainwater chemistry encompasses the signatures of geogenic and anthropogenic processes along the regional air mass movement apart from the local sources. The predominance of dust events and anthropogenic emissions in arid regions facilitate new particle formation. Further, rain events of different seasons depict moisture sources from diverse regions reflecting variation in the regional geochemistry with respect to seasons. Hence, to characterize the geochemical composition of rainwater, the study has focused on an integrated approach by considering regional transport, meteorological components and possible local sources. A total of 74 rainwater samples were collected from 27 rain events in 2018, 2019, and 2022, representing urban coastal areas of Kuwait predominantly of Ca-SO4-HCO3 type. The average pH and electrical conductivity of the rainwater were 7.18 and 140 μS/cm, respectively. The sea salt fractions calculated relative to Kuwait seawater ranged from 25.6 to >100 %, with higher values attributed to anthropogenic sources. Sea salt fraction, ion ratios, principal component analysis and factor scores revealed the terrestrial and anthropogenic sources apart from marine contributions. In addition, new particle formation and aerosols contributed to the rainwater chemistry involving SOx, NOx, and photochemical reactions during higher relative humidity and lesser wind speed. The HYSPLIT reflected that the moisture sources were largely from western regions of the study area, and those of December and January events had long-distance travel across the Azores high originating from northeast America. The trajectories of the November events are observed to originate from the Caspian/Black Sea region in the northeastern part of Kuwait with a relatively shorter distance of travel. The rainfall samples had higher ionic concentrations, and saturated with aragonite and calcite minerals in a few locations specifically after the dust events, while the subsequent rain events were less polluted.

Chemistry and buffering capacity of fog water collected in and around New Delhi, India

In this study, fog water samples collected from New Delhi and its satellite township Sonipat for 2 years 2015-16 and 2016-17 are characterized by soluble ions and internal buffering capacity. The pH of fog water is close to 5.6 due to the limited contributions of Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions by virtue of low wind speed during winters. NH₄⁺ and Ca²⁺ were dominant cations in fog at both sites during both sampling years. NH₄⁺ and Ca²⁺ contributions were similar in New Delhi during 2015-16, but Ca²⁺ increased during 2016-17 on account of construction activities. Emissions from agriculture fields through fertilizer applications and animal breeding lead to an increase of NH₄⁺ compared to Ca²⁺ at Sonipat. SO₄^2- was comparable with Cl^-, followed by NO₃^- ions. Plastic burning in this region during wintertime was a possible source of Cl^- ions. Acid neutralization decreases as NH₄⁺  > Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ for all samples in Sonipat and as Ca²⁺  > NH₄⁺ and Mg²⁺ in New Delhi. Higher NO₃^- in New Delhi was due to vehicular emissions. Vehicular emissions in New Delhi and agriculture fields in Sonipat were dominant sources of organic acids. Observed internal buffering capacity was different than theoretical values over a pH range from 4 to 7 in New Delhi, whereas both buffering capacities were close to each other in Sonipat samples. Lead in fog water at both sites was higher than prescribed safe limits for drinking water. Pollution sources were responsible for higher concentrations of metals, organic acids, and soluble ions in fog in New Delhi compared to that in Sonipat.

The role of particulate matter in reduced visibility and anionic composition of winter fog: a case study for Amritsar city

Severe fog events during winter months in India are a serious concern due to the higher incidence of road accidents, flight delays and increased occurrence of respiratory diseases. The present paper is an attempt to study the twenty fog samples collected from the rooftop of an academic building of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, India from November 2017 to January 2018. Fog samples were analysed for various parameters viz. pH, electrical conductivity (EC), chloride (Cl-), nitrate (NO3 -) and sulphate (SO4 2-) levels. The pH, EC, and Cl-, NO3 - and SO4 2- levels in the fog samples were estimated as 6.3-7.9, 240-790 μS cm-1, 108-2025 μeq L-1, 105-836 μeq L-1 and 822-5642 μeq L-1, respectively. It was noticed that sulphate was the dominant anion in fog samples. The SO4 2- to NO3 - molar ratio in the fog was estimated as 7.6 which suggests the burning of fossil fuel as the major pollutant from vehicular exhausts. Multiple regression analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of PM2.5/PM10 ratio and relative humidity (RH) on visibility. A box-cox plot of power transformation produced better model fitting, employing a square root transformation of the visibility which indicated that the PM2.5/PM10 and RH have an exponential effect on visibility.

Water-soluble ions and carbon content of size-segregated aerosols in New Delhi, India: direct and indirect influences of firework displays

The particle size distribution and water-soluble inorganic ion (WSII) and carbonaceous species in size-segregated aerosols, Dp < 0.95, 0.95 < Dp < 1.5, 1.5 < Dp < 3.0, 3.0 < Dp < 7.2, and 7.2 < Dp < 10 μm, were investigated during Diwali firework displays in New Delhi, India. The firework activity had the maximum contribution to the mass loading of PM_0.95 (786 μg/m³) followed by PM_0.95-1.5 (216 μg/m³) with all other three fractions accounting to a total of 214 μg/m³. The percentage contributions of WSII to the total mass of aerosols were highest in first two size fractions (39 and 40 %, respectively), compared to other fractions. The firework marker ion (Mg²⁺, Cl^-, and K⁺) mass concentration shows higher values in PM_0.95 during Diwali compared to before Diwali period. The mass size distribution of particles, NH₄⁺, K⁺, Cl^-, SO₄^2-, Mg²⁺, and NO₃^-, also showed changes on the Diwali night compared to previous and after days. The high Cl^-/Na⁺ (5.6) and OC/EC (3.4) ratio of PM_0.95 can be used as the indicators of firework displays. The lowering of mixing height on Diwali night to 50 m compared to before (277 mts) and after (269 mts) Diwali period further concentrated the aerosols in ambient atmosphere. Therefore, the firework display not only released the gaseous or elemental constituent but also influenced the temperature profile and both put together result in high aerosol concentrations, WSII, OC, and BC contents in ambient atmosphere. The alveolar, respirable, and inhalable fractions accounted for 64.6, 90.8, and 97.8 %, respectively, of the total PM₁₀ mass. People stay exposed to such high pollution level in short span of 6-8 h and experience adverse health impacts due to high mass concentrations and the chemical components of fine aerosols.

Metal toxicity assessment of mobile phone parts using Milli Q water

Environmentally safe disposal of end-of-life (EoL) or discarded mobile phone is a serious problem on account of their ever increasing number and toxic metals contents. In the present work, metal toxicity of mobile phone plastics, printed wire boards (PWBs) and batteries were assessed through dynamic batch leaching using Milli Q (MQ) water. Phone plastics failed Toxicity Characterization Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and Waste Extraction Test (WET) for Pb as the cumulative amount of Pb leached from plastics (5.33 mg/l) exceeded the regulatory limits (5.0mg/l) used in characterizing a waste as hazardous. Similarly, the average cumulative amount (21.83 mg/l) of Ni leached from PWBs exceeded the regulatory limit of 20mg/l and thus PWBs failed WET. Metals leached from batteries in small amounts (Cr: 0.40 mg/l and Ni: 0.15 mg/l). The presence of Fe in the batteries and its precipitation as oxides/hydroxides in the leaching solution hindered the leaching of other metals in MQ water. Both plastics and PWBs should be treated as hazardous waste and should not be disposed in open landfills. Further, MQ water leaching could provide good simulation of metals leaching from the mobile phones disposed at landfill sites.
