Abstract
Background/Objectives: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most prevalent incurable nontraumatic neurological disability in young individuals. It causes numerous symptoms, including tingling, fatigue, muscle spasms, cognitive deficits, and neuropsychiatric disorders. This disease significantly worsens quality of life (QoL), and this dimension of general functioning provides valuable information about the effectiveness of treatment and well-being. There are psychological interventions that can improve QoL, but their number is limited. Therefore, searching for new methods that are as effective and safe as possible is ongoing. Methods: This review examines the potential effectiveness of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in improving the quality of life in patients with MS. Searches were conducted in the PubMed/Medline, Research Gate, and Cochrane databases. Results: The search yielded seven studies in which QoL was a primary or secondary outcome. Stimulation protocols displayed heterogeneity, especially concerning the choice of the stimulation site. Four studies demonstrated the effectiveness of tDCS in improving QoL, all of which (two) used anodal stimulation of the left DLPFC. Stimulation of the motor cortex has produced mixed results. The potential mechanisms of action of tDCS in improving QoL in MS are explained. These include improved synaptic plasticity, increased cerebral blood flow, salience network engagement through tDCS, and reduction of beta-amyloid deposition. The limitations are also detailed, and recommendations for future research are made. Conclusions: While the evidence is limited, tDCS has shown potential to improve QoL in MS patients in some studies. Prefrontal stimulation appears promising, and further research is recommended to explore this approach.

Abstract
The elderly population is rapidly increasing; hence, the disability due to age-related diseases has become an important socioeconomic burden. Amongst age-related diseases cardiovascular ones (CVD) have a huge impact on morbidity and mortality and are associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Several studies investigated the role of hypovitaminosis D in the pathogenesis of MetS and of CVD, this review unravels the relationship between aging/senescence, vitamin D, gender, and pathogenesis of MetS.

Abstract
Due to its high degree of contagiousness and like almost no other virus, SARS-CoV-2 has put the health of the world population on alert. COVID-19 can provoke an acute inflammatory process and uncontrolled oxidative stress, which predisposes one to respiratory syndrome, and in the worst case, death. Recent evidence suggests the mechanistic role of mitochondria and vitamin D in the development of COVID-19. Indeed, mitochondrial dynamics contribute to the maintenance of cellular homeostasis, and its uncoupling involves pathological situations. SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with altered mitochondrial dynamics with consequent oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory state, cytokine production, and cell death. Furthermore, vitamin D deficiency seems to be associated with increased COVID-19 risk. In contrast, vitamin D can normalize mitochondrial dynamics, which would improve oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory state, and cytokine production. Furthermore, vitamin D reduces renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system activation and, consequently, decreases ROS generation and improves the prognosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Thus, the purpose of this review is to deepen the knowledge about the role of mitochondria and vitamin D directly involved in the regulation of oxidative stress and the inflammatory state in SARS-CoV-2 infection. As future prospects, evidence suggests enhancing the vitamin D levels of the world population, especially of those individuals with additional risk factors that predispose to the lethal consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
Previous studies of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients have reported an inverse correlation between disability, the number of relapses and vitamin D levels in mostly white patients. It is unclear if this relationship has the same behavior in individuals with Hispanic backgrounds. To determine the relationship between vitamin D serum levels and disability in a sample of Hispanics of a Mexican background with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). A cross-sectional study was conducted on 50 RRMS individuals of Mexican background. The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score, progression index (PI) and annual relapse rate (ARR) were recorded for each patient. Vitamin D levels were assessed during the summer. Pearson's test was used to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D and EDSS, PI, ARR, and duration of disease evolution. Most patients were females (n = 29, 58%). The mean vitamin D level was 22.3 (± 6.4) ng/ml; the mean EDSS score was 2.2 (± 0.7), ARR 1.3 (± 0.5) and PI1.08 (± 0.6). No correlation was found between vitamin D levels and EDSS scores, ARR, PI or duration of disease. Moderate negative association between vitamin D levels and EDSS was found just in females (<0.0001). No correlation between vitamin D levels and disability was found in this sample of RRMS Mexicans. Longitudinal studies are needed to better understand the impact of Vitamin D in disability and multiple time points.

Abstract
Neural crest cells (NCC) are multi-potent cells of ectodermal origin that colonize diverse organs, including the gastrointestinal tract to form the enteric nervous system (ENS) and hematopoietic organs (bone marrow, thymus) where they participate in lymphocyte trafficking. Recent studies have implicated the spleen as an anatomic site for integration of inflammatory signals from the intestine with efferent neural inputs. We have previously observed alterations in splenic lymphocyte subsets in animals with defective migration of NCC that model Hirschsprung's disease, leading us to hypothesize that there may be a direct cellular contribution of NCC to the spleen. Here, we demonstrate that NCC colonize the spleen during embryogenesis and persist into adulthood. Splenic NCC display markers indicating a glial lineage and are arranged anatomically adjacent to blood vessels, pericytes and nerves, suggesting an astrocyte-like phenotype. Finally, we identify similar neural-crest derived cells in both the avian and non-human primate spleen, showing evolutionary conservation of these cells.

Abstract
The relationship between infections and autoimmune diseases is complex and there are several reports highlighting the role of human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) in these patients. The levels of multiple sclerosis-associated retrovirus (MSRV)-type DNA of Env gene was measured in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 52 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and 40 healthy controls using specific quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis. Furthermore, we analyzed the status of HERV-W/MSRV in these patients with regards to both EBV (DNA load and anti-EBNA1 IgG antibody) and vitamin D concentration. MSRV DNA copy number were significantly higher in RRMS patients than healthy controls (P < 0.0001). Interestingly, an inverse correlation was found between MSRV DNA copy number and serum vitamin D concentration (P < 0.01), but not for EBV load or anti-EBNA-1 IgG antibody.

Abstract
Background Multiple sclerosis (MS) has undergone a significant increase in incidence in the industrialised nations over the last 130 years. Changing environmental factors, possibly infections or a lack of or altered timing of them, determine the prevalence of the disease. Although a plethora of aetiological factors, clearly evident in a group of children with MS, appear relevant, there may nevertheless be a single factor essential for the aetiopathogenesis and clinical manifestation of MS. Description and discussion This hitherto unknown factor is postulated to be a ‘melanoma-like neuromelanin’ (MLN) dependent on the activation of a gene for syncytin-1. An involvement of MLN could explain the diverse findings in the epidemiology, immunology and pathology of MS, requiring a consideration of a complex infectious background, the human leucocyte antigens, as well as cosmic radiation causing geomagnetic disturbances, vitamin D deficiency, smoking, and lower levels of uric acid. Summary In principle, the MLN-based concept is a unifying one, capable of explaining a number of characteristics of the disease. To date, MLN has not been addressed in studies on MS and future work will need to be done on human patients, as there is little or no neuromelanin (the precursor of MLN) in the animals used as experimental models in the study of MS.

Abstract
Much attention has been devoted to neurodegenerative diseases involving redox processes. This review comprises an update involving redox processes reported in the considerable literature in recent years. The mechanism involves reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress, usually in the brain. There are many examples including Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s, prions, Down’s syndrome, ataxia, multiple sclerosis, Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, schizophrenia, and Tardive Dyskinesia. Evidence indicates a protective role for antioxidants, which may have clinical implications. A multifaceted approach to mode of action appears reasonable.
