One-step hydrothermal synthesis of amorphous CoMoS4/N-rGO nanocomposites as anode materials with improved cyclability for sodium-ion batteries

Synergistic Performance Boosts of Dopamine-Derived Carbon Shell Over Bi-metallic Sulfide: A Promising Advancement for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

A CoMoS composite is synthesized to combine the benefits of cobalt and molybdenum sulfides as an anodic material for advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The synthesis is accomplished using a simple two-step hydrothermal method and the resulting CoMoS nanocomposites are subsequently encapsulated in a carbonized polydopamine shell. The synthesis procedure exploited the self-polymerization ability of dopamine to create nitrogen-doped carbon-coated cobalt molybdenum sulfide, denoted as CoMoS@NC. Notably, the de-lithiation capacity of CoMoS and CoMoS@NC is 420 and 709 mAh g⁻1, respectively, even after 100 lithiation/de-lithiation cycles at a current density of 200 mA g⁻1. Furthermore, excellent capacity retention ability is observed for CoMoS@NC as it withstood 600 consecutive lithiation/de-lithiation cycles with 94% capacity retention. Moreover, a LIB full-cell assembly incorporating the CoMoS@NC anode and an NMC-532 cathode is subjected to comprehensive electrochemical and practical tests to evaluate the performance of the anode. In addition, the density functional theory showcases the increased lithium adsorption for CoMoS@NC, supporting the experimental findings. Hence, the use of dopamine as a nitrogen-doped carbon shell enhanced the performance of the CoMoS nanocomposites in experimental and theoretical tests, positioning the material as a strong candidate for LIB anode.

Amorphous Materials for Lithium-Ion and Post-Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion and post-lithium-ion batteries are important components for building sustainable energy systems. They usually consist of a cathode, an anode, an electrolyte, and a separator. Recently, the use of solid-state materials as electrolytes has received extensive attention. The solid-state electrolyte materials (as well as the electrode materials) have traditionally been overwhelmingly crystalline materials, but amorphous (disordered) materials are gradually emerging as important alternatives because they can increase the number of ion storage sites and diffusion channels, enhance solid-state ion diffusion, tolerate more severe volume changes, and improve reaction activity. To develop superior amorphous battery materials, researchers have conducted a variety of experiments and theoretical simulations. This review highlights the recent advances in using amorphous materials (AMs) for fabricating lithium-ion and post-lithium-ion batteries, focusing on the correlation between material structure and properties (e.g., electrochemical, mechanical, chemical, and thermal ones).  We  review both the conventional and the emerging characterization methods for analyzing AMs and present the roles of disorder in influencing the performances of various batteries such as those based on lithium, sodium, potassium, and zinc. Finally,  we  describe the challenges and perspectives for commercializing rechargeable AMs-based batteries.

Spatially Guided Assembly of Polyoxometalate Superlattices and Their Derivatives as High-Power Sodium-Ion Battery Anodes

The use of polyoxometalate clusters (POMs) with multitudinous structures and surface properties as building blocks has sparked the development of cluster-assembled materials with many prospective applications. In comparison to classic molecules and assembly processes, control over the steric interactions and linkage of large POMs to achieve superlattices with multiple levels of organization remains a great challenge. This work presents a universal approach to modulate the spatial coordination behavior and configurations, and achieves a class of cluster superlattice architectures formed by linear alignment and two-dimensional arrangement of POM units. The formation mechanism is explained as a stepwise co-assembly pathway in which POMs can intervene and dictate a typical stripping-restacking combination mode with the lamellar mediator. These cluster superlattices with long-range POMs ordering impart distinct merits to their derivatives by sulfuration, for which we demonstrate the substantially promoted power and cycling life of these POM derivatives applied as sodium-ion battery anodes.
