Religiosity and behavioral health outcomes of adolescents living in disaster-vulnerable areas

Keeping the Faith: Religion, Positive Coping, and Mental Health of Caregivers During COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in major stressors such as unemployment, financial insecurity, sickness, separation from family members, and isolation for much of the world population. These stressors have been linked to mental health difficulties for parents and caregivers. Religion and spirituality (R/S), on the other hand, is often viewed as promotive of mental health. However, the mechanisms by which R/S might promote mental health for parents during the pandemic remain unclear. Thus, this longitudinal study explores how R/S is associated with better caregiver mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic through higher levels of positive coping skills. A sample of N = 549 caregivers (parents and other adults in childrearing roles) across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia were recruited through the Prolific^® research panel [67.8% female; age M = 41.33 years (SD = 6.33), 72.3% White/European]. Participants were assessed on measures of psychological distress, coping, R/S, and COVID-19 disruption at three time points between May and November 2020. Cross-lagged panel analysis revealed that caregiver coping mediated the relationship between caregiver R/S and caregiver mental health. Findings highlight a mechanism through which R/S naturally conveys a mental health benefit during periods of social disruption, which may provide an important target for public health promotion and clinical intervention.

Traumatic dental injuries and experiences along the life course - a study among 16-yr-old pupils in western Norway

The study assessed risk factors for traumatic dental injuries (TDI) using experiences along the life course. A retrospective longitudinal study, including historical clinical data, was conducted on 16-yr-old pupils in western Norway. All first-grade pupils born in 1997 and attending public high schools were invited to participate (n = 5,184). Participants responded to an electronically administered closed-ended questionnaire (39.6%, n = 2,055). Information on the occurrence of TDI and events during the life course (categorized as socio-economic, biological, psychosocial, and behavioural indicators) was collected. Variables with a significant bivariate association with three different dependent variables (TDI, severity of TDI, and multiple episodes of TDI) were tested in a hierarchical logistic regression analysis. Traumatic dental injuries were more frequent among boys, adolescents of higher socio-economic status, and adolescents with adverse psychosocial and behavioural scores. Moderate and severe TDIs were more frequent among adolescents with adverse psychosocial and behavioural scores and among adolescents participating in the sport of wrestling. Multiple episodes of TDI were more frequent among adolescents with adverse psychosocial and behavioural scores and among adolescents participating in sports activities. Incorporation of different life-course indicators is important in evaluating TDI severity and repeated incidents.

Intrinsic Religiosity and Health Risk Behaviours Among Black University Students in Limpopo, South Africa

Not much is known about religiosity's protective role against health risk behaviour in the South African context. As such, the study investigated the relationship between intrinsic religiosity and health risk behaviours in a sample of Black university students (N = 335). Two-way ANOVA showed that there were intrinsic religiosity main effects for alcohol use and sexual behaviour, gender and intrinsic religiosity main effects on tobacco and marijuana use, and gender main effects and gender and intrinsic religiosity interaction effects for engagement in physical activity. Thus, religiosity is an inner resource available to avert engagement in varied health risk behaviours.

Processes of Religious and Spiritual Influence in Adolescence: A Systematic Review of 30 Years of Research

This is a systematic review of 30 years (1988-2017) of empirical research on processes of religious/spiritual influence in adolescence. We followed a multi-step process that resulted in 241 studies organized according to eight research questions and the corresponding methods and analyses typically used to address them. We coded these studies based on the dimensions of religiosity/spirituality and the youth outcomes involved. In some cases (quantitative studies of mediation and moderation, as well as qualitative studies) we also coded a third process variable. Results of the coding process revealed a number of interesting patterns. First, religiosity/spirituality is generally adaptive for adolescents, protecting them from negative outcomes (e.g., risk behaviors and mental illness), and promoting positive youth development and flourishing. Nevertheless, in some contexts, religiosity/spirituality may be at least partially maladaptive. Second, there is some evidence, from experimental and longitudinal studies, that relations between religiosity/spirituality and adaptive outcomes are causal. Third, there are numerous complex and dynamic processes by which religiosity/spirituality relate to youth outcomes. In terms of mediation studies, the most salient mediating processes seem to involve religiosity/spirituality dimensions, peers, values/attitudes, and social control/norms. Fourth, religiosity/spirituality is multidimensional, involving various interwoven facets at the individual and ecological levels. Private or personal aspects of religiosity/spirituality (e.g., religious/spiritual importance) tend to be more salient predictors of outcomes than public aspects of religiosity/spirituality (e.g., religious worship service attendance). The results of this systematic review point to promising directions for future research. First, more research is needed studying a broader range of dimensions of religiosity/spirituality, processes of influence, and outcomes. In terms of religiosity/spirituality, much of the prior work has focused on overall religiosity/spirituality, and religious/spiritual behaviors (e.g., worship service attendance). In terms of outcomes, the emphasis has been on religiosity/spirituality protecting against maladaptive outcomes (e.g., substance use). Second, more research is needed examining the role of culture, and using more rigorous methods (e.g., experience sampling, experimental design, longitudinal design, or mixed methods). This systematic review provides a detailed analysis of what is known regarding processes of religious/spiritual influence in the lives of adolescents, and hopefully better positions researchers to move the field forward.

Adolescents' Exposure to Disasters and Substance Use

This paper reviews the impact of exposure to man-made or natural disasters on adolescent substance use. It covers empirical studies published from 2005 to 2015 concerning (a) the scope of the problem, (b) vulnerable groups and risk and protective factors, and (c) evidence-based interventions. The review suggests a strong link between adolescent substance use and exposure to either man-made or natural disaster. Vulnerable groups include adolescents with previous exposure to traumatic events, living in areas that are continually exposed to disasters, and ethnic minorities. Risk and protective factors at the individual, familial, community, and societal levels are described based on the bioecological model of mass trauma. Given that mass trauma is unfortunately a global problem, it is important to establish international interdisciplinary working teams to set gold standards for comparative studies on the etiology for adolescent substance use in the context of disasters.
