Adsorption properties of Pseudomonas monteilii for removal of uranium from aqueous solution

Effects of Detoxifying Substances on Uranium Removal by Bacteria Isolated from Mine Soils: Performance, Mechanisms, and Bacterial Communities

In this study, we investigated the effect of detoxifying substances on U(VI) removal by bacteria isolated from mine soil. The results demonstrated that the highest U(VI) removal efficiency (85.6%) was achieved at pH 6.0 and a temperature of 35 °C, with an initial U(VI) concentration of 10 mg/L. For detoxifying substances, signaling molecules acyl homoserine lactone (AHLs, 0.1 µmol/L), anthraquinone-2, 6-disulfonic acid (AQDS, 1 mmol/L), reduced glutathione (GSH, 0.1 mmol/L), selenium (Se, 1 mg/L), montmorillonite (MT, 1 g/L), and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA, 0.1 mmol/L) substantially enhanced the bacterial U(VI) removal by 34.9%, 37.4%, 54.5%, 35.1%, 32.8%, and 47.8% after 12 h, respectively. This was due to the alleviation of U(VI) toxicity in bacteria through detoxifying substances, as evidenced by lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content and higher superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities for bacteria exposed to U(VI) and detoxifying substances, compared to those exposed to U(VI) alone. FTIR results showed that hydroxyl, carboxyl, phosphorus, and amide groups participated in the U(VI) removal. After exposure to U(VI), the relative abundances of Chryseobacterium and Stenotrophomonas increased by 48.5% and 12.5%, respectively, suggesting their tolerance ability to U(VI). Gene function prediction further demonstrated that the detoxifying substances AHLs alleviate U(VI) toxicity by influencing bacterial metabolism. This study suggests the potential application of detoxifying substances in the U(VI)-containing wastewater treatment through bioremediation.

Phosphorus-rich biochar modified with Alcaligenes faecalis to promote U(VI) removal from wastewater: Interfacial adsorption behavior and mechanism

Phosphorus-rich biochar (PBC) has been extensively studied due to its significant adsorption effect on U(VI). However, the release of phosphorus from PBC into solution decreases its adsorption performance and reusability and causes phosphorus pollution of water. In this study, Alcaligenes faecalis (A. faecalis) was loaded on PBC to produce a novel biocomposite (A/PBC). After adsorption equilibrium, phosphorus released into solution from PBC was 2.32 mg/L, while it decreased to 0.34 mg/L from A/PBC (p < 0.05). The U(VI) removal ratio of A/PBC reached nearly 100%, which is 13.08% higher than that of PBC (p < 0.05), and it decreased only by 1.98% after 5 cycles. When preparing A/PBC, A. faecalis converted soluble phosphate into insoluble metaphosphate minerals and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). And A. faecalis cells accumulated through these metabolites and formed biofilm attached to the PBC surface. The adsorption of metal cations on phosphate further contributed to phosphorus fixation in the biofilm. During U(VI) adsorption by A/PBC, A. faecalis synthesize EPS and metaphosphate minerals by using the internal components of PBC, thus increasing the abundance of acidic functional groups and promoting U(VI) adsorption. Hence, A/PBC can be a green and sustainable material for U(VI) removal from wastewater.

Adsorption of UO2 2+ by AlBaNi-layered double hydroxide nano-particles: kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic studies

AlBaNi-LDH nanoparticles have been synthesized by the co-precipitation method. A series of characterization analyses (Scanning Electron Microscope, Energy Dispersive X-ray, Transmission Electron Microscope, X-ray Diffraction, Atomic Force Microscope, and Infrared spectroscopy) proved that the surface structure of AlBaNi-LDH nano-particles was the key mechanism for UO2 2+ adsorption. The synthesized product showed good performance in UO2 2+ adsorption efficiency in neutral pH with a maximal adsorption capacity of 137 mg/g. The results demonstrated the adsorption process fitted well with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models. Also, the effects of coexisting ions and different eluents are briefly described. These results confirm that AlBaNi-LDH is an effective material for the adsorption of UO2 2+ from an aqueous solution with reusable availability.

Facile preparation of low-cost HKUST-1 with lattice vacancies and high-efficiency adsorption for uranium

In this work, we prepared HKUST-1 and HKUST-1 with lattice vacancies (HLV) using benzoic acid (BA) as a low-cost modulator to replace part of the traditional trimesic acid ligand (H3BTC). The structure and morphology of the products were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM and XPS. The adsorption performance of the products for uranium from aqueous solutions was investigated. The results showed that the sorption of U(vi) on HKUST-1 and HLV agreed with the Langmuir isotherm model (R HKUST-1 2 = 0.9867 and R HLV 2 = 0.9828) and the maximum adsorption capacity was 430.98 mg g-1 and 424.88 mg g-1, respectively. According to kinetics studies, the adsorption fitted better with a pseudo-second-order model (R HKUST-1 2 = 1.0000 and R HLV 2 = 0.9978). The as-prepared adsorbents were used for the removal of uranium from real water samples as well. The results showed that HLV with lower cost is a promising adsorbent for uranium from aqueous solutions.
