Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a monomer of plastic that can leach into water from scratched containers when used for an extended period. Arsenic (As) is an environmental toxicant, and people are exposed to both arsenic and BPA through drinking water and through scratched plastic containers used in contaminated areas. However, the combined effects of As and BPA on locomotor performance and neurobehavioral changes are yet to be investigated. Thus, this study was designed to assess the combined effect of As and BPA on locomotor activity and neurotoxicity through a mouse model. The neurobehavioral changes in experimental mice were evaluated using the different maze tests. Mice exposed to As or BPA exhibited higher anxiety-like behavior, decreased locomotor activity, and impaired learning and memory including social interaction compared with control mice. However, As + BPA-exposed mice showed a significantly reduced anxiety-like behavior, improved learning and memory including locomotor activity, and social interaction compared to individual As-exposed mice. Furthermore, mice exposed to As or BPA showed lower levels of antioxidant and cholinesterase enzymes activity, nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor-2 (Nrf2), heme-oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and interleukin-10 (IL-10) in the brain and higher levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the brain and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in the serum compared to control mice. However, combined exposure augmented antioxidant and cholinesterase enzymes activity, Nrf2, HO-1, IL-10 levels in the brain and reduced serum LDH activity and IL-6 in the brain compared to As exposure. Therefore, this study suggests that As and BPA may have antagonistic effects, and BPA could attenuate the As-induced neurobehavioral and biochemical changes in co-exposed mice.

Abstract
Background Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) is a crucial factor in the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the key genes associated with COPD and immune cell infiltration remain to be elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to identify biomarkers pertinent to the diagnosis of ERS in COPD and delve deeper into the association between pivotal genes and their possible interactions with immune cells. Methods We selected the genetic data of 189 samples from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, including 91 control and 98 COPD samples. First, we identified the differentially expressed genes between patients with COPD and controls and then screened the ERS genes associated with COPD. Second, 22 core ERS genes associated with COPD were screened using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression model and Support Vector Machine Recursive Feature Elimination (SVM-RFE), and the predictive effects of the screened core genes in COPD were evaluated. Third, we explored immune cell infiltration associated with COPD and conducted an in-depth analysis to explore the possible connections between the identified key genes and their related immune cells. Results A total of 66 differentially expressed endoplasmic reticulum stress-related genes (DE-ERGs) were identified in this study, among which 12 were upregulated and 54 were downregulated. The 22 key genes screened were as follows: AGR3, BCHE, CBY1, CHRM3, CYP1B1, DCSTAMP, DDHD1, DMPK, EDEM3, EDN1, FKBP10, HSPA2, KPNA2, LGALS3, MAOB, MMP9, MPO, MTTP, PIK3CA, PTGIS, PURA, and TMCC1. Their expression was significantly different between COPD and healthy samples, and the difference between the groups was significant. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that CBY1 (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.800), BCHE (AUC = 0.773), EDEM3 (AUC = 0.768), FKBP10 (AUC = 0.760), MAOB (AUC = 0.736), and MMP9 (AUC = 0.729) showed a strong ability to distinguish COPD samples from normal samples. Immune cell infiltration results associated with the three key genes were also obtained. Conclusion The insights of our study have the potential to present new evidence for exploring emerging diagnostic signs of COPD while also contributing to a better understanding of its developmental mechanisms.

Abstract
Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE; EC 3.1.1.8), an enzyme structurally related to acetylcholinesterase, is widely distributed in the human body. It plays a role in the detoxification of chemicals such as succinylcholine, a muscle relaxant used in anesthetic practice. BChE is well-known due to variant forms of the enzyme with little or no hydrolytic activity which exist in some endogamous communities and result in prolonged apnea following the administration of succinylcholine. Its other functions include the ability to hydrolyze acetylcholine, the cholinergic neurotransmitter in the brain, when its primary hydrolytic enzyme, acetylcholinesterase, is absent. To assess its potential roles, BChE was studied in relation to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cognition, hepatic disorders, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and inflammatory conditions. Individuals who lack the enzyme activity of BChE are otherwise healthy, until they are given drugs hydrolyzed by this enzyme. Therefore, BChE is a candidate for the study of loss-of-function mutations in humans. Studying individuals with variant forms of BChE can provide insights into whether they are protected against metabolic diseases. The potential utility of the enzyme as a biomarker for Alzheimer's disease and the response to its drug treatment can also be assessed.

Abstract
Introduction Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) contributes to a poor prognosis. Reliable biomarkers to predict adverse outcomes during hospitalization are important. Aim To investigate the relationship between the serum cholinesterase (ChE) level and adverse clinical outcomes, including hypoxemia severity, hypercapnia, duration of hospital stay (DoHS), and noninvasive ventilation (NIV) requirement, in patients with AECOPD. Methods Patients hospitalized with AECOPD in the Wuhu Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine between January 2017 and December 2021 were included. Results A total of 429 patients were enrolled. The serum ChE level was significantly lower in patients with hypercapnia, who required NIV during hospitalization and who had a DoHS of >10 days, with an oxygenation index < 300. The ChE level was correlated negatively with the C-reactive protein level and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and correlated positively with the serum albumin level. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that a serum ChE level of ≤4116 U/L (OR = 2.857, 95% CI = 1.46-5.58, p = 0.002) was associated significantly with NIV requirement. Conclusions The serum ChE level was correlated significantly with complicating severe hypoxemia, hypercapnia, prolonged DoHS, and the need for NIV in patients hospitalized with AECOPD. The serum ChE level is a clinically important risk-stratification biomarker in patients hospitalized with AECOPD.

Abstract
aste collectors are exposed to a wide variety of bacteria, endotoxins, fungi, allergens, particulate matter, irritating inhalants, and vehicle exhaust, making them more prone to development of chronic diseases. Although several studies described the impact of occupational exposure on the overall health of waste collectors, few investigations were conducted regarding cellular and molecular changes that may occur due to exposure. The aim of this study was to assess biomarkers of oxidative stress such as levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipoperoxidation, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), apoptosis, butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activity and mitochondrial function (MitoTrackerTM Green FM and MitoTrackerTM Red) using the peripheral blood from individuals occupationally exposed to recyclable solid waste in Southern Brazil. The study included 30 waste collectors and 30 control individuals, who did not perform activities with recognized exposure to biological and chemical substances. Waste collectors were found to exhibit in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) higher rates of apoptosis, increased production of ROS, and reduced mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), associated with decreased total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and elevated activity of BChE in plasma. Therefore, evidence indicates that cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, and inflammatory responses may be involved in the multiplicity of adverse health outcomes related to contaminant exposure in waste collectors. It is thus necessary to implement and/or improve occupational health programs aimed at workers as well as mandatory inspections for the use of personal protective equipment.

Abstract
Cholinesterase (ChE) is associated with the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic airway inflammation and oxidation/antioxidant imbalance. However, the relationship between serum ChE levels and survival outcomes of patients hospitalized with acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) is unknown. In this retrospective single-center study, we investigated the ability of the serum ChE level to predict in-hospital death in patients hospitalized with AECOPD. The clinicopathological data, including serum ChE levels as well as clinical and biochemical indicators were extracted for 477 patients from the hospital records and analyzed. Our results demonstrated that AECOPD patients with lower serum ChE levels were associated with increased mortality, frequent hospitalization due to acute exacerbations (AE) in the past year, and longer hospital stay. The optimal cutoff value for the serum ChE level was 4323 U/L. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) values for predicting in-hospital mortality based on the serum ChE level was 0.79 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.72-0.85). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that serum ChE level ≤ 4323 U/L (odds ratio (OR) 9.09, 95% CI 3.43-28.3, p < 0.001), age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (aCCI), and the number of hospitalizations due to AE in the past year were independent risk factors for predicting the in-hospital mortality of AECOPD patients. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that low serum ChE levels were associated with significantly higher in-hospital mortality rates of patients hospitalized with AECOPD. Therefore, serum ChE level is a promising prognostic predictor of hospitalized AECOPD patients.

Abstract
Objective It has been observed that local and systemic disorders of lipid metabolism occur during the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but no specific mechanism has yet been identified. Methods The mRNA microarray dataset GSE76925 of COPD patients was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database and screened for differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Lipid metabolism-related genes (LMRGs) were extracted from the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes database and Molecular Signature Database. The DEGs were intersected with LMRGs to obtain differentially expressed lipid metabolism-related genes (DeLMRGs). GO enrichment analysis and KEGG pathway analysis were performed on DeLMRGs, and protein-protein interaction networks were constructed and screened to identify hub genes. The GSE8581 validation set and further ELISA experiments were used to validate key DeLMRG expression. Results Differential analysis of dataset GSE76925 identified 587 DEGs, of which 62 genes were up-regulated and 525 were down-regulated. Taking the intersection of 587 DEGs with 1102 LMRGs, 20 DeLMRGs were obtained, including 1 up-regulated gene and 19 down-regulated genes. 10 hub genes were screened by cytohubba plugin, including 9 down-regulated genes PLA2G4A, HPGDS, LEP, PTGES3, LEPR, PLA2G2D, MED21, SPTLC1 and BCHE, as well as the only up-regulated gene PLA2G7. Validation of the identified 10 DeLMRGs using the validation set GSE8581 revealed that BCHE and PLA2G7 expression levels differed between the two groups. We further constructed the ceRNA network of BCHE and PLA2G7. Cell experiments also showed that PLA2G7 expression was up-regulated and BCHE expression was down-regulated in CSE-treated RAW264.7 and THP-1 cells. Conclusion Based on a comprehensive bioinformatic analysis of lipid metabolism genes, we identified BCHE and PLA2G7 as potentially significant biomarkers of COPD. These biomarkers may represent promising targets for COPD diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Inhibition of cholinesterase (ChE) activity has been long considered as the main diagnostic method of organophosphate (OP) and carbamate pesticides poisoning; however, it has been shown that ChE activity may also be altered due to exposure to other non-organophosphorus toxicants and variety of different medical conditions. Hence, to avoid misdiagnosis, we aimed to systematically review available documents to look for additional biomarkers of OP and carbamate poisoning. The electronic databases in addition to Google scholar were searched for eligible articles on March 2022 using "organophosphate," "carbamate," and "biomarker" including all their similar terms. After collecting the relevant documents, the data were extracted and described qualitatively. In total, data of 66 articles from 51 human and 15 animal studies were extracted. Findings demonstrated that enzymes such as β-glucuronidase, neuropathy target esterase, amylase, and lipase, in addition to hematological indicators such as CBC, CRP, lactate dehydrogenase, and CPK have high sensitivity and accuracy in the diagnosis of OP poisoning. Findings suggest that using various markers for diagnosis of OP intoxication is helpful for appropriate management, and early identifying the patients at risk of death. The suggested biomarkers also help to avoid misdiagnosis of OP poisoning with other similar conditions.

Abstract
Boric acid (BA) has been used in many diseases because it increases the amount of reduced glutathione in the body and reduces oxidative damage. This study aims to investigate the effects of boric acid in cisplatin-induced neuropathy, in which oxidative stress is also effective in its pathophysiology. In this study, 8-10 weeks old, 170-190 g Wistar Albino rats were used. Each group contained seven rats (n = 35). Experimental groups consist of control, sham, neuropathy, treatment, and boric acid groups. For the neuropathy model, a single dose of cisplatin (3 mg/kg, i.p) was administered once a week for five weeks, and for the treatment group, boric acid was administered daily (100 mg/kg, intragastric) for five weeks. After drug administration, the rotarod test to evaluate motor performance, the tail-flick and hot/cold plate tests to evaluate sensory conduction states, the von Frey filament test to evaluate the mechanical allodynia, and the adhesive removal test to assess sensorimotor function were performed. The sciatic nerve's motoric conduction velocity was also assessed electrophysiologically. Oxidative stress parameters were also assessed biochemically in sciatic nerve tissue and serum. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was used to evaluate the sciatic nerve tissue histopathologically. The motor conduction velocity of the sciatic nerve, impaired by cisplatin, was increased considerably by boric acid (p < 0.05). It also reduced the latency time of the compound muscle action potential (CMAP), which was increased by cisplatin. (p < 0.05). The von Frey filament test results demonstrated increased pain sensitivity of the cisplatin group increased, and mechanical allodynia was observed. Boric acid significantly alleviated this condition (p < 0.05). In the cold plate, adhesive removal, and rotarod tests, boric acid attenuated the adverse effects of cisplatin (p < 0.05). Biochemically, BA reduced the level of MDA, which was raised by cisplatin, and significantly increased the level of SOD, which was lowered by cisplatin (p < 0.05). Histopathologically; BA reduced neuronal degeneration and vacuolization caused by cisplatin. As a consequence, it has been determined that boric acid alleviates the adverse effects of cisplatin. BA reduced the destructive effect of cisplatin by reducing oxidative stress, and this effect was verified electrophysiologically, behaviorally, and histopathologically.

Abstract
Metalworkers are exposed to numerous chemicals in their workplace environment, such as solvents, heavy metals, and metalworking fluids, that have a negative impact on their health. Furthermore, there is an increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases among metalworkers; however, the molecular mechanisms involved in this increased predisposition to chronic diseases are unclear. Considering that occupational exposure represents a potential risk for metalworkers, the aim of this study was to measure biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and cytotoxicity in the peripheral blood of metalworkers from Southern Brazil. The study included 40 metalworkers and 20 individuals who did not perform activities with any recognized exposure to chemical substances, such as those working in administration, commerce, and education, as controls. Cellular and molecular biomarkers as leukocyte viability, intracellular production of reactive species, mitochondrial mass and membrane potential and plasma lipid peroxidation, sulfhydryl groups, total antioxidant capacity, and butyrylcholinesterase activity were evaluated in the blood of metalworkers and controls. Metalworkers were found to have higher rates of apoptosis, increased production of reactive species, and increased mitochondrial potential and mass in leukocytes associated with decreased antioxidant defenses and increased activity of the butyrylcholinesterase enzyme in their plasma. It can be concluded that cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, and inflammation are involved in the multiplicity of health outcomes related to chemical exposure in the metalworking industry.

Abstract
Background: Patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have
increased risks for a series of physical and mental illnesses. Tumor
necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) has been reported to participate in the
development of COPD and its complications. However, the values of blood
TNF-α level used in the diagnosis of COPD remains controversial. In view of
this, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the
correlation between TNF-α level and COPD. Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and CNKI up to May 2018. The
selection criteria were set according to the PICOS framework. A
random-effects model was then applied to evaluate the overall effect sizes
by calculating standard mean difference (SMD) and its 95% confidence
intervals (CIs). Results: A total of 40 articles containing 4189 COPD patients and 1676 healthy
controls were included in this meta-analysis. The results indicated a
significant increase in TNF-α level in the COPD group compared with the
control group (SMD: 1.24, 95% CI: 0.78–1.71,
p < 0.00001). According to the subgroup analyses, we
noted that TNF-α level was associated with predicted first second of forced
expiration (FEV1) (%) and study region. However, no association
between TNF-α level and COPD was found when the participants were
nonsmokers, and the mean age was less than 60 years. Conclusions: Our results indicated that TNF-α level was increased in COPD patients when
compared with healthy controls. Illness progression and a diagnosis of COPD
might contribute to higher TNF-α levels. However, the underlying mechanism
