Effects of an exercise program linked to primary care on depression in elderly: fitness as mediator of the improvement

OLDER ADULTS' SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING EXPERIENCING THE EXERGAME "I AM DOLPHIN"

The objective of this study was to understand older adults' perceptions of the connections between an exergame intervention, "I Am Dolphin," and their subjective well-being. Researchers conducted three focus groups with 14 older adults who participated in the exergame feasibility study. The semi-structured focus groups were transcribed, coded, and analysed using deductive and inductive techniques. Three themes were constructed related to playing the exergame and participants' subjective well-being: 1) elevated mood (through scheduled activity, immersion, and socialization), 2) feelings of achievement (especially following frustration and competition), and 3) perceived cognitive or physical changes. These findings will help researchers better understand how exergames may relate to the well-being of older adults. Future investigators could use these findings to create and implement new exergame interventions.

Critically examining health complexity experienced by urban Indigenous peoples in Canada by exploring the factors that allow health complexity to persist: a qualitative study of Indigenous patients in Calgary, Alberta

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to identify and critically examine the components of health complexity, and explore the factors that allow it to exist, among urban Indigenous peoples in Canada.

DESIGN

Qualitative exploration with relational conversations.

SETTING

Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of nine urban Indigenous patients were recruited from a multidisciplinary primary healthcare clinic that serves First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. Recruitment and data collection took place between September and November 2021.

RESULTS

Thematic analysis revealed three main themes, namely: sources of health complexity, psychological responses to adversity, and resilience, strengths, and protective factors. Key sources of health complexity arose from material resource disparities and adverse interpersonal interactions within the healthcare environment, which manifest into psychological distress while strengths and resilience emerged as protective factors.

CONCLUSION

The healthcare system remains inapt to address complexity among urban Indigenous peoples in Canada. Healthcare violence experienced by Indigenous peoples only further perpetuates health complexity. Future clinical tools to collect information about health complexity among urban Indigenous patients should include questions about the factors defined in this study.

The Effects of Dance Interventions on Depression in Older Adults: A Meta-Analysis

Meta-analyses of the effects of dance on depressive symptoms in older adults have shown contradictory results, but few primary studies were included (5 and 8 studies). We aimed to examine the effects of dance on depressive symptoms in older adults aged 60 years and older and to examine the moderator effects of the source, participants, methods, and intervention characteristics. We included 23 primary studies that compared depressive symptoms across dance and comparison/control groups of older adults (72 ± 6.7 years old) and were written in English (N = 1,398) participants. Dance groups showed significantly less depressive symptoms post-intervention than comparison groups (ES = 0.66, 95% CI [0.42, 0.91], p < .001, I2 = 76.80%). South America and Australia showed the greatest effects. Using quasi-experimental designs showed significant effect sizes compared to using randomized designs. Only one quality indicator, intention-to-treat, influenced effect size. Dance might be used as an alternative treatment to improve depression.

Physical Activity and Prevalence of Depression and Antidepressants in the Spanish Population

Introduction: Depression is a mental disorder that affects more than 250 million people in the world, limiting their functional capacities. The work of public health policies is aimed at reducing its prevalence as well as its pharmaceutical cost. Physical activity (PA) programs are interventions with a high potential for effectiveness. Objectives: To establish the relationships between physical activity and the prevalence of depression and antidepressant intake in the Spanish population. Design: We performed a correlational study that was based on data from the European Health Survey Spain 2020 with 20,287 participants, aged 18–84 years, living in Spain. Results: Dependency relationships were found between the prevalence of depression, and: the frequency of PA, the number of days of PA per week, and the number of days of muscle strengthening in the population, in both sexes, and in all age groups (p < 0.001). Dependency relationships were found between the three PA variables and the prevalence of taking antidepressants (p < 0.001). An elevated prevalence of depression and antidepressant taking were found in the inactive groups compared to those who performed PA (p < 0.05). Conclusions: There is an inverse relationship between physical activity and the probability of suffering from depression and the intake of antidepressants. Performing PA 3–4 days/week, including 1–2 days of strength work, could be the best proposal to reduce the prevalence of depression in the Spanish population.

Depression and Exercise in Older Adults: Exercise Looks after You Program, User Profile

Introduction: Depression is a challenge for public health policies, as it is the number one leading cause of disability in the world. In order to combat and prevent it, different social and health interventions are being developed to promote health through physical activity. Objective: Analyze and describe the user profile of the patients with depression from the Exercise Looks After You program, which is a physical activity program that works on improving public health and has an essential role preventing chronic diseases and improving the quality of life of the elderly in Extremadura. Design: Cross-sectional study. Participants: total sample of 1972 users (96.4% women, 3.6% men), of whom 724 (94.6% women, 5.4% men) suffer from depression. Results: It was observed that the dominant user profile of the patients with depression within the program is female, 71 years old, physically active, overweight, married, with low educational level, non-smoker, no alcohol consumption and below average physical fitness and health-related quality of life, which translates into a high incidence of primary care, nursing and prescription visits. Conclusions: This study presents the user profile of depressive versus non-depressive participants of the Exercise Looks After You physical activity program. This data could be meaningful in order to improve and optimize public health programs and resources.

Association between Agility, Health-Related Quality of Life, Depression, and Anthropometric Variables in Physically Active Older Adult Women with Depression

Introduction. Depressive disorders are mental disorders that last over time, and seriously affect the lives of the people who suffer from them, diminishing their quality of life, reducing their motor capacity, and incapacitating them in their daily lives. It is a major problem worldwide. Objective. To study the association between agility, health-related quality of life (hrqol), anthropometric status, and depression status in older adult women with depression. Design. Data collected from 685 physically active older women with depression were analyzed. Result. A moderate inverse correlation (r = −0.34) is shown between Time Up & Go (TUG) and EuroQol Five-Dimensional Three-Level Version (EQ-5D-3L). Between TUG and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), there is a small direct correlation (r = 0.14) between them. Between TUG and anthropometric data, all observed correlations are significant. Conclusions. There is a significant association between agility, health-related quality of life, depression, and anthropometric data in physically active older women with depression.

Environmental enrichment: A concept analysis

OBJECTIVES

The concept analysis of environmental enrichment aims to clarify the meaning of the term contributing to a shared understanding of its use in healthcare and future research studies. Environmental enrichment has implications in health promotion in children's development and healthy aging in the general population.

METHODS

A literature search using PubMed and CINAHL databases on environmental enrichment was conducted to identify the uses of the term from various disciplines. The keywords are "environmental enrichment", "socialization", "physical activity", "cognitive stimulation", and "experience-dependent". Human studies from 2000 to 2020 were included in the search.

RESULTS

Availability of green spaces, neighborhood safety, walkability to community centers, and accessibility of community resources are antecedents of environmental enrichment. Defining attributes are positive stimulation, interpersonal interaction, and physical engagement. The consequences of environmental enrichment are improved cognitive functioning in children, decline in memory impairment, and reduced risk of developing dementia in the elderly.

CONCLUSION

Engaging and counseling patients, family members, and the community in adverse effects of a deprived environment and the benefits of an enriched environment is a vital tenet of the nursing discipline. Understanding the optimum amount of positive stimulation, interpersonal interaction duration, and frequency are needed in future research.

Effects of Long-Duration Home Isolation Linked to the COVID-19 Pandemic on Mental Health of Adolescent Athletes

PURPOSE

To assess whether adolescent athletes were affected or not in terms of mental health by the long duration at home linked to isolation enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHOD

The study included 940 team athletes, 274 individual athletes, and 131 nonathlete controls aged 12-17 years. Demographic data were obtained with a form including questions about age, sex, sports type, and physical activity status (type, duration, and frequency) during the isolation period. Participants completed the Children's Revised Impact of Event Scale-13, Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children.

RESULTS

Among participants, 88% did not meet the physical activity recommendations for children and adolescents, while 42.8% felt depressed. Depressive symptoms were present in 38.1% of boys and 59.7% of girls, with girls (6.4%) having higher posttraumatic stress symptoms than boys (3.5%). Among athletes, depressive and anxiety symptoms were lower compared with nonathlete controls (P < .01). Posttraumatic stress symptoms were lower among athletes than nonathlete controls for girls (team vs control, P = .006; individual vs control, P = .002) but similar for boys (P > .05). The depression (P = .518), state (P = .866), and trait anxiety (P = .507) symptoms were similar between team athletes and individual athletes.

CONCLUSION

Though adolescent athletes' depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress symptoms were significantly lower than nonathlete controls, athletes also had high depression levels. These findings show the need to take precautions to protect the psychological health of not only nonathletes, but also athletes in the pandemic period.
