Green synthesis of palladium nanoparticles and investigation of their catalytic activity for methylene blue, methyl orange and rhodamine B degradation by sodium borohydride

Assessing the Potential of Aconitum Laeve Extract for Biogenic Silver and Gold Nanoparticle Synthesis and Their Biological and Catalytic Applications

The adoption of green chemistry protocols in nanoparticle (NP) synthesis has exhibited substantial potential and is presently a central focus in research for generating versatile NPs applicable across a broad spectrum of applications. In this scientific contribution, we, for the first time, examined the ability of Aconitum Laeve (A. Laeve) crude extract to synthesize silver and gold nanoparticles (AgNPs@AL; AuNP@AL) and explored their potential applications in biological activities and the catalytic degradation of environmental pollutants. The synthesized NPs exhibited a distinctive surface plasmon resonance pattern, a spherical morphology with approximate sizes of 5-10 nm (TEM imaging), a crystalline architecture (XRD analysis), and potential functional groups identified by FTIR spectroscopy. The antibacterial activity was demonstrated by inhibition zones that measured 16 and 14 mm for the AgNPs@AL and AuNP@AL at a concentration of 80 µg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus and 14 and 12 mm against Escherichia coli, respectively. The antioxidant potential of the synthesized NPs was evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2-Phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl 3-Oxide (PTIO), and 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) assays. Our findings suggest that the AuNP@AL effectively countered the tested radicals considerably, displaying IC50 values of 115.9, 103.54, and 180.85 µg/mL against DPPH, PTIO, and ABTS, respectively. In contrast, the AgNPs@AL showed IC50 values of 144.9, 116.36, and 95.39 µg/mL against the respective radicals. In addition, both the NPs presented significant effectiveness in the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and rhodamine B. The overall observations indicate that A. Laeve possesses a robust capability to synthesize spherical nanoparticles, exhibiting excellent dispersion and showcasing potential applications in both biological activities and environmental remediation.

Rapid catalytic reduction of environmentally toxic azo dye pollutant by Prussian blue analogue nanocatalyst

The release of toxic azo dyes pollutants in the environment from different industries represents a public health concern and a serious environmental problem. Therefore, the conversion of hazardous methyl orange (MO) azo dye to environmentally benign products is a critical demand. In this work, an eco-friendly Prussian blue analogue (PBA) was synthesized and its catalytic activity toward the reduction of MO was investigated. The PBA copper(ii) hexacyanocobaltate(III) (Cu3[Co(CN)6]2) was synthesized by a facile inexpensive chemical coprecipitation method without using hazardous solvents. The nanocatalyst was characterized using XPS, Raman, FTIR spectroscopy, and XRD. The chemical reduction of MO using NaBH4 and the PBA as nanocatalyst was monitored by UV-VIS spectroscopy. Toxic MO was completely reduced in 105 s with a rate constant (k) 0.0386 s-1 using only 10 μg of the PBA nanocatalyst. Besides the powerful catalytic activity, the nanocatalyst also showed excellent stability and recyclability for ten consecutive cycles, with no significant decrease in the catalytic performance. Therefore, the proposed PBA is a promising, stable, cost-effective, and eco-friendly nanocatalyst for the rapid elimination of hazardous azo dyes.

Metal nanoparticles decorated mint-cellulose acetate composite as an efficient catalyst for the reduction of methyl orange

Water contamination caused by toxic compounds has emerged as one of the most severe challenges worldwide. Biomass-based nanocomposites offer a sustainable and renewable alternative to conventional materials. In this study, a nanocomposite of mint and cellulose acetate (Mint-CA) was prepared and employed as a supportive material for Cu nanoparticles (CuNPs) and Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs). The selectivity of CuNPs@mint-CA and AgNPs@mint-CA was assessed by comparing their performance in the reduction reaction of various dyes solutions. AgNPs@mint-CA exhibited superior catalytic performance, with a removal of 95.2 % for methyl orange (MO) compared to 68 % with CuNPs@mint-CA. The absorption spectra of MO exhibited a distinct peak at 464 nm. The reduction reaction of MO by AgNPs@mint-CA followed pseudo-first-order-kinetic with a rate constant of k = 0.0063 min-1 (R2 = 0.928). The highest removal of MO was achieved under the following conditions: a catalyst weight of 40 mg, an initial MO concentration of 0.07 mM, the addition of 0.5 mL of 0.1 M NaBH4, and a temperature of 25 °C. Furthermore, the AgNPs@mint-CA catalyst exhibited exceptional reducibility even after five use cycles, highlighting its potential for efficiently removing MO.

Characterization, catalytic, and recyclability studies of nano-sized spherical palladium particles synthesized using aqueous poly-extract (turmeric, neem, and tulasi)

Green synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) has gained immense significance compared to other metal ions owing to their unique properties. Among them, palladium 'Pd' has been in the spotlight for its stable and superior catalytic activity. This work focuses on the synthesis of Pd NPs using the combined aqueous extract (poly-extract) of turmeric (rhizome), neem (leaves), and tulasi (leaves). The bio-synthesized Pd NPs were characterized to study its physicochemical and morphological features using several analytical techniques. Role of Pd NPs as nano-catalysts in the degradation of dyes (1 mg/2 mL stock solution) was evaluated in the presence of a strong reducing agent (sodium borohydride; SBH). In the presence of Pd NPs and SBH, maximum reduction of methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and rhodamine-B (Rh-B) dyes was observed under 20nullmin (96.55 ± 2.11%), 36nullmin (96.96 ± 2.24%), and 27nullmin (98.12 ± 1.33%), with degradation rate of 0.1789 ± 0.0273 min^-1, 0.0926 ± 0.0102 min^-1, and 0.1557 ± 0.0200 min^-1, respectively. In combination of dyes (MB + MO + Rh-B), maximum degradation was observed under 50nullmin (95.49 ± 2.56%) with degradation rate of 0.0694 ± 0.0087 min^-1. It was observed that degradation was following pseudo-first order reaction kinetics. Furthermore, Pd NPs showed good recyclability up to cycle 5 (72.88 ± 2.32%), cycle 9 (69.11 ± 2.19%) and cycle 6 (66.21 ± 2.72%) for MB, MO and Rh-B dyes, respectively. Whereas, up to cycle 4 (74.67 ± 0.66%) during combination of dyes. As Pd NPs showed good recyclability, they can be used for several cycles thus influencing the overall economics of the process.
