Abstract
Ligands with a purely aliphatic backbone are receiving rising attention in the chemistry of coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks. Such unique features inherent to the aliphatic bridges as increased conformational freedom, non-polarizable core, and low light absorption provide rare and valuable properties for their derived MOFs. Applications of such compounds in stimuli-responsive materials, gas, and vapor adsorbents with high and unusual selectivity, light-emitting, and optical materials have extensively emerged in recent years. These properties, as well as other specific features of aliphatic-based metal-organic frameworks are summarized and analyzed in this short critical review. Advanced characterization techniques, which have been applied in the reported works to obtain important data on the crystal and molecular structures, dynamics, and functionalities, are also reviewed within a general discussion. In total, 132 references are included.

Abstract
Flexi-MOFs are typically limited to low-connected (<9) frameworks. Here we report a platform-wide approach capable of creating a family of high-connected materials (collectively called CPM-220) that integrate exceptional framework flexibility with high rigidity. We show that the multi-module nature of the pore-space-partitioned pacs (partitioned acs net) platform allows us to introduce flexibility as well as to simultaneously impose high rigidity in a tunable module-specific fashion. The inter-modular synergy has remarkable macro-morphological and sub-nanometer structural impacts. A prominent manifestation at both length scales is the retention of X-ray-quality single crystallinity despite huge hexagonal c-axial contraction (≈ 30%) and harsh sample treatment such as degassing and sorption cycles. CPM-220 sets multiple precedents and benchmarks on the pacs platform in both structural and sorption properties. They possess exceptionally high benzene/cyclohexane selectivity, unusual C3H6 and C3H8 isotherms, and promising separation performance for small gas molecules such as C2H2/CO2.

Abstract
Six new three-dimensional metal–organic frameworks based on early lanthanide(III) cations and trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (H2chdc) were obtained. Their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The structure of [La2(H2O)4(chdc)3]·2DMF·H2O (1; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) contains one-dimensional infinite La(III)-carboxylate chains interconnected by cyclohexane moieties to form a highly porous polymeric lattice with 30% solvent accessible volume. Compounds [Ln2(phen)2(chdc)3]·0.75DMF (2Ln; Ln3+ = Ce3+, Pr3+, Nd3+ and Sm3+; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) are based on binuclear carboxylate building blocks, which are decorated by chelate phenanthroline ligands and interconnected by cyclohexane moieties to form more dense isostructural coordination frameworks with primitive cubic pcu topology. Compound [Nd2(phen)2(chdc)3]·2DMF·0.67H2O (3) is based on secondary building units similar to 2Ln and contains a coordination lattice isomeric to 2Ln with a rare hexagonal helical snz topology. Thermal stability and luminescent properties were investigated. For 2Sm, a strong and nonmonotonous dependence of the luminescence color on the variation of excitation wavelength was revealed, changing its emission from pinkish red at λex = 340 nm to white at λex = 400 nm, and then to yellow at lower excitation energies. Such nonlinear behavior was rationalized in terms of the contribution of several different luminescence mechanisms. Thus, 2Sm is a rather rare example of a highly tunable monometallic lanthanide-based luminophore with possible applications in light-emitting devices and optical data processing.

Abstract
Four new gadolinium(III) metal-organic frameworks containing 2,2′-bipyridyl (bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) chelate ligands and trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate (chdc2−) were synthesized. Their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All four coordination frameworks are based on the binuclear carboxylate building units. In the compounds [Gd2(bpy)2(chdc)3]·H2O (1) and [Gd2(phen)2(chdc)3]·0.5DMF (2), the six-connected {Ln2(L)2(OOCR)6} blocks form a 3D network with the primitive cubic (pcu) topology. In the compounds [Gd2(NO3)2(phen)2(chdc)2]·2DMF (3) and [Gd2Cl2(phen)2(chdc)2]·0.3DMF·2.2dioxane (4), the four-connected {Ln2(L)2(X)2OOCR)4} units (where X = NO3− for 3 or Cl− for 4) form a 2D square-grid (sql) network. The solid-state luminescent properties were investigated for the synthesized frameworks. Bpy-containing compound 1 shows no luminescence, possibly due to the paramagnetic quenching by Gd3+ cation. In contrast, the phenathroline-containing MOFs 2–4 possess yellow emission under visible excitation (λex = 460 nm) with the tuning of the characteristic wavelength by the coordination environment of the metal center.

Abstract
Two series of highly luminescent yttrium(iii), europium(iii) and terbium(iii) metal-organic frameworks containing diimine aromatic ligands and the dicarboxylate linker trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate (chdc2-) which can be described by the general formulas [M2(bpy)2(chdc)3], where M = Y3+ (1), Eu3+ (2), and Tb3+ (3) and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridyl, and [M2(phen)2(chdc)3], where M = Y3+ (4), Eu3+ (5), and Tb3+ (6) and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, were synthesized and characterized. All compounds are based on the same dinuclear {M2(L)2(OOCR)6} building blocks and possess a similar topology of the 3D framework with narrow pores. The chelate aromatic ligands act as efficient light-harvesting antennas for subsequent energy transfer to the emitting metal center (M = Eu3+, Tb3+) or intraligand photoemission (M = Y3+). As a result, the reported compounds display intense emission in the red (Eu3+), green (Tb3+) or blue (Y3+) regions representing three basic colors (RGB) of visible light. The measured quantum yields (QYs) of the solid-state luminescence for individual compounds were found to be 63% (1), 46% (2), 59% (3), 2.3% (4), 55% (5) and 49% (6). The drastic reduction of the luminescence efficiency for 4 is explained by the strong disorder of phen ligands. The high thermal stability (up to 300 °C) and exceptional moisture resistance of the bpy-based frameworks 1-3 were confirmed by TG and PXRD measurements. Various bimetal or trimetal compositions were also prepared for the bpy-series. The luminescence properties of these mixed-metal compounds depend on both the chemical composition and excitation wavelength (λex). Remarkably, pure white emission with color temperature = 6126 K was achieved for [Y1.68Eu0.08Tb0.24(bpy)2(chdc)3] at λex = 360 nm with QY = 20%. The reported results suggest that the obtained coordination framework series is a convenient platform for the design of highly efficient light emitting materials with tunable properties.

Abstract
Three new 3D metal-organic porous frameworks based on Co(II) and 2,2′-bithiophen-5,5′-dicarboxylate (btdc2−) [Co3(btdc)3(bpy)2]·4DMF, 1; [Co3(btdc)3(pz)(dmf)2]·4DMF·1.5H2O, 2; [Co3(btdc)3(dmf)4]∙2DMF∙2H2O, 3 (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridyl, pz = pyrazine, dmf = N,N-dimethylformamide) were synthesized and structurally characterized. All compounds share the same trinuclear carboxylate building units {Co3(RCOO)6}, connected either by btdc2– ligands (1, 3) or by both btdc2– and pz bridging ligands (2). The permanent porosity of 1 was confirmed by N2, O2, CO, CO2, CH4 adsorption measurements at various temperatures (77 K, 273 K, 298 K), resulted in BET surface area 667 m2⋅g−1 and promising gas separation performance with selectivity factors up to 35.7 for CO2/N2, 45.4 for CO2/O2, 20.8 for CO2/CO, and 4.8 for CO2/CH4. The molar magnetic susceptibilities χp(T) were measured for 1 and 2 in the temperature range 1.77–330 K at magnetic fields up to 10 kOe. The room-temperature values of the effective magnetic moments for compounds 1 and 2 are μeff (300 K) ≈ 4.93 μB. The obtained results confirm the mainly paramagnetic nature of both compounds with some antiferromagnetic interactions at low-temperatures T < 20 K in 2 between the Co(II) cations separated by short pz linkers. Similar conclusions were also derived from the field-depending magnetization data of 1 and 2.

Abstract
Five trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate (chdc2−) metal–organic frameworks of transition metals were synthesized in aqueous systems. A careful control of pH, reaction temperature and solvent composition were shown to direct the crystallization of a particular compound. Isostructural [Co(H2O)4(chdc)]n (1) and [Fe(H2O)4(chdc)]n (2) consist of one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded chains. Compounds [Cd(H2O)(chdc)]n∙0.5nCH3CN (3), [Mn4(H2O)3(chdc)4]n (4) and [Mn2(Hchdc)2(chdc)]n (5) possess three-dimensional framework structures. The compounds 1, 4 and 5 were further characterized by magnetochemical analysis, which reveals paramagnetic nature of these compounds. A presence of antiferromagnetic exchange at low temperatures is observed for 5 while the antiferromagnetic coupling in 4 is rather strong, even at ambient conditions. The thermal decompositions of 1, 4 and 5 were investigated and the obtained metal oxide (cubic Co3O4 and MnO) samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.
