N^N^C-Cyclometalated rhodium(III) complexes with isomeric pyrimidine-based ligands: unveiling the impact of isomerism on structural motifs, luminescence and cytotoxicity

The impact of isomerism of pyrimidine-based ligands and their rhodium(III) complexes with regard to their structures and properties was investigated. Two isomeric ligands, 4-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-2,5-diphenylpyrimidine (HL2,5) and 4-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-2,6-diphenylpyrimidine (HL2,6), were synthesized. The ligands differ by the degree of steric bulk: the molecular structure of HL2,5 is more distorted due to presence of pyrazolyl and phenyl groups in the neighbouring positions 4 and 5 of the pyrimidine ring. The complexation of HL2,5 and HL2,6 with RhCl3 leads to the sp2 C-H bond activation, resulting in the isolation of two complexes, [RhL2,5(Solv)Cl2]·nEtOH and [RhL2,6(Solv)Cl2]·nEtOH (Solv = H2O, EtOH), with the deprotonated forms of the pyrazolylpyrimidine molecules which coordinate the Rh3+ ion as N^N^C-tridentate ligands. According to DFT modelling, the mechanism of the deprotonation involves (i) the C-H bond breaking in the 2-phenyl group followed by the coordination of the C atom to the Rh atom, (ii) the protonation of coordinated chlorido ligand, (iii) the ejection of the HCl molecule and (iv) the coordination of the H2O molecule. The ligand isomerism has an impact on emission properties and cytotoxicity of the complexes. Although the excited states of the complexes effectively deactivate through S0/T1 and S0/S1 crossings associated with the cleavage of the weak H2O ligands upon excitation, the [RhL2,5(Solv)Cl2]·nEtOH complex appeared to be emissive in the solid state, while [RhL2,6(Solv)Cl2]·nEtOH is non-emissive at all. The complexes show significant cytotoxic activity against cancerous HepG2 and Hep2 cell lines, with the [RhL2,6(Solv)Cl2]·nEtOH complex being more active than its isomer [RhL2,5(Solv)Cl2]·nEtOH. On the other hand, noticeable cytotoxicity of the latter against HepG2 is supplemented by its non-toxicity against non-cancerous MRC-5 cells.

Luminescent Supramolecular Ionic Frameworks based on Organic Fluorescent Polycations and Polyanionic Phosphorescent Metal Clusters

Emissive ionic supramolecular frameworks are designed by associating tetraphenylethylene-based tetra-cationic units and di-anionic molybdenum or tetra-anionic rhenium octahedral clusters. Obtained structures were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The emission properties of the hybrids were investigated as dry powders or in various solvents by one photon and two photon absorption leading to a O2 concentration dependent luminescence color for the Mo based hybrid.

Lanthanide complexes with a new luminescent iminophosphonamide ligand bearing phenylbenzothiazole substituents

A new iminophosphonamine Ph2P(HNPbt)(NPbt) (1, HL) bearing chromophore 2-(phen-2'-yl)-1,3-benzothiazole (Pbt) substituents was synthesized and introduced into lanthanide complexes. It was found that salt metathesis reactions between KL (2) generated in situ and LnCl3 lead to the formation of tris-iminophosphonamide complexes [LnL2]L (Ln = Y (3), Sm (4), Gd (5), Dy (6)), regardless of the 2/LnCl3 ratio. Compounds 3-6 consist of a cationic fragment [LnL2]+, where the lanthanide atom is surrounded by two rigidly κ4-coordinated ligands, and an L- anion residing in the outer coordination sphere. Iminophosphonamine 1 shows a rare excitation wavelength-dependent two-band luminescence in the solid state. For compounds containing the deprotonated form, namely potassium salt KL and complexes of Gd and Dy, a single-band luminescence with the color changing from turquoise to orange was observed. The Sm complex reveals a set of a few narrow well-resolved bands corresponding to the f-f transitions against the background of the outer-sphere ligand's emission.

Pd(II)- and Pt(II)-Assisted P-C Activation/Cyclization Reactions with a Luminescent α-Aminophosphine

There is unceasing interest toward transformations of phosphine derivatives, which are facilitated by transition metals. We report a facile Pd(II)- and Pt(II)-assisted P-C bond cleavage in a luminescent 2-phenylbenzothiazole-based α-methylaminophosphine (PCN, 1). Specifically, reactions between 1 and [M(COD)Cl2] (M = Pd, Pt; COD = cycloocta-1,5-diene) in different solvents (methylene chloride, acetonitrile, pyridine, toluene) resulted in the formation of PPh2-, captured either as a bridging ligand in binuclear complexes with a {M2(PPh2)2} moiety or as an adduct to COD in [Pt2(PPh2COD)2Cl2]. The heterocyclic part transforms to annulated c-CN+ species with a 1,2-dihydroquinazoline cycle formed. In the presence of pyridine as a base, annulated form c-CN+ destabilizes and undergoes reverse cyclization transforming to deprotonated CN form. Quantum-chemical density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict that a crucial step in the reactions involves proton transfer from the N atom of the amino group of PCN to a neighboring molecule. A combination of high photophysical sensitivity of c-CN+ toward its immediate environment and rich structural capabilities in assembling (c-CN)22+ pairs in different crystal packings in a family of phases with the general formula (c-CN)2[M2(PPh2)2Cl4] allows one to fine-tune the luminescence properties of the latter. The results were rationalized as a variation of π-π intercationic spacings, which tunes the degree of excited-state charge transfer between c-CN+ cations. As a result, compounds with relatively short interplanar π-π-separation between the cations show a stronger charge-transfer-mediated bathochromic shift.

Exfoliation of 2D Metal-Organic Frameworks: toward Advanced Scalable Materials for Optical Sensing

Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) occupy a special place among the large family of functional 2D materials. Even at a monolayer level, 2D MOFs exhibit unique sensing, separation, catalytic, electronic, and conductive properties due to the combination of porosity and organo-inorganic nature. However, lab-to-fab transfer for 2D MOF layers faces the challenge of their scalability, limited by weak interactions between the organic and inorganic building blocks. Here, comparing three top-down approaches to fabricate 2D MOF layers (sonication, freeze-thaw, and mechanical exfoliation), The technological criteria have established for creation of the layers of the thickness up to 1 nm with a record aspect ratio up to 2*10^4:1. The freezing-thaw and mechanical exfoliation are the most optimal approaches; wherein the rate and manufacturability of the mechanical exfoliation rivaling the greatest scalability of 2D MOF layers obtained by freezing-thaw (21300:1 vs 1330:1 aspect ratio), leaving the sonication approach behind (with a record 900:1 aspect ratio) have discovered. The high quality 2D MOF layers with a record aspect ratio demonstrate unique optical sensitivity to solvents of a varied polarity, which opens the way to fabricate scalable and freestanding 2D MOF-based atomically thin chemo-optical sensors by industry-oriented approach.

Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic and Biological Properties of Copper(II) Complexes with 1,3,4-Thiadiazole Derivatives

New coordination compounds of copper(II) with 2,5-bis(ethylthio)-1,3,4-thiadiazole (L1) and 2,5-bis(pyridylmethylthio)-1,3,4-thiadiazole (L2) with compositions Cu(L1)2Br2, Cu(L1)(C2N3)2, Cu(L2)Cl2, and Cu(L2)Br2 were prepared. The complexes were identified and studied by CHN analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, powder X-Ray diffraction (XRD), and static magnetic susceptibility. The crystal structures of Cu(II) complexes with L1 were determined. The structures of the coordination core of complexes Cu(L2)Cl2 and Cu(L2)Br2 were determined by Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Magnetization measurements have revealed various magnetic states in the studied complexes, ranging from an almost ideal paramagnet in Cu(L1)2Br2 to alternating-exchange antiferromagnetic chains in Cu(L1)(C2N3)2, where double dicyanamide bridges provide an unusually strong exchange interaction (J1/kB ≈ -23.5 K; J2/kB ≈ -20.2 K) between Cu(II) ions. The cytotoxic activity of copper(II) complexes with L2 was estimated on the human cell lines of breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2).

Experimental and Computational Investigation of the Oxime Bond Stereochemistry in c-Jun N-terminal Kinase 3 Inhibitors 11H-Indeno[1,2-b]quinoxalin-11-one Oxime and Tryptanthrin-6-oxime

11H-Indeno[1,2-b]quinoxalin-11-one oxime (IQ-1) and tryptanthrin-6-oxime are potent c-Jun N-terminal kinase 3 (JNK-3) inhibitors demonstrating neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity. However, the stereochemical configuration of the oxime carbon-nitrogen double bond (E- or Z-) in these compounds was so far unknown. In this contribution, we report the results of the determination of the double bond configuration in the solid state by single crystal X-ray diffraction and in solution by 1D and 2D NMR techniques and DFT calculations. It was found that both in the solid state and in solution, IQ-1 adopts the E-configuration stabilized by intermolecular hydrogen bonds, in contrast to previously assumed Z-configuration that could be stabilized only by an intramolecular hydrogen bond.

Chromium-Lanthanide Complexes Containing the Cr═P═Cr Fragment: Synthesis, Characterization, and Computational Study

Heterometallic complexes [Cp*₂Ln(μ-^isoCO)₂{Cr₂(μ-P)Cp₂(CO)₂}] [Ln = Yb (1), Sm (2)] were obtained in reactions of [Cp*₂Ln(thf)₂] (Ln = Sm, Yb) with [{CpCr(CO)₂}₂(μ,η^2:2-P₂)] (4). An analogous yttrium compound [Cp*₂Y(μ-^isoCO)₂{Cr₂(μ-P)Cp₂(CO)₂}] (3) was synthesized using a three-component reaction between [Cp*₂Y(BPh₄)], 4, and KC₈. Compounds 1-3 were isolated as solvent-free crystalline phases; in the case of 2, the 2·0.5C₇H₈ solvate was also obtained. The structures of all crystalline phases were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All compounds contain a unique {((CO)₂CpCr═P═CrCp(CO)₂)}^- unit, which is linked to Ln³⁺ ions through CO ligands in the isocarbonyl mode. Compounds 1 and 3 have a molecular structure, while compound 2 contains polymeric chains of triangular [Cp*₂Sm(μ-^isoCO)₂{Cr₂(μ-P)Cp₂(CO)₂}] units linked by μ-^isoCO-ligands. ³¹P NMR studies demonstrated similar dramatic downfield shifts for complexes 1-3. To realize the electronic structure of 1-3 and to elucidate the nature of the high downfield chemical ³¹P shift, quantum chemical calculations were performed both for 1-3 and for related Cr- and Fe-phosphido complexes. Calculations show that the anomalously high downfield chemical shifts for 1-3 are due to the anisotropic effect of the Cr═P double bonds.

Luminescence of ESIPT-capable zinc(II) complexes with a 1-hydroxy-1H-imidazole-based ligand: exploring the impact of substitution in the proton-donating moiety

The rational design of ESIPT-capable metal complexes (ESIPT - Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer) requires two sites, namely, an ESIPT site and a metal binding site, to be spatially separated into the ligand core. Ligands featuring such sites are able to bind metal ions without being deprotonated upon their coordination. The use of ESIPT-capable ligands for the synthesis of metal complexes paves the way toward the exploration of ESIPT in the field of coordination chemistry. In this study, we present a new ESIPT-capable ligand on the base of 1-hydroxy-1H-imidazole, 1-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-[(2,2'-bipyridin)-6-yl]-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazole (HLb), and a series of ESIPT-capable zinc(II) halido complexes, [Zn(HLb)X2] (X = Cl, Br, I). Due to the incorporation of a (2,2'-bipyridin)-6-yl group at position 4 of the imidazole cycle, HLb acts as an N,N,N-chelating ligand. In the solid state, HLb and [Zn(HLb)X2] emit in the yellow region of the spectrum with excited state lifetimes in the nanosecond domain. Chelation-induced emission enhancement (CHEF) effect in zinc(II) complexes leads to an increase in the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) for these compounds in comparison with free HLb ligand. The ESIPT process in HLb and [Zn(HLb)X2] is barrierless. The emission of [Zn(HLb)X2] is associated with the S₁^T → S₀ transition in the tautomeric form (T-form). In contrast, due to (i) the dark nature of the S₁ state and the bright nature of the S₂ state and (ii) the large S₁-S₂ energy gap, HLb shows weak S₂^T → S₀ fluorescence, in violation of Kasha's rule. Finally, the analysis of atomic charges in a series of ESIPT-capable 1-hydroxy-1H-imidazoles and their zinc(II) complexes allowed us to reveal the influence of expanding π-conjugation in the proton-donating and proton-accepting moieties on the stabilization/destabilization of the T-form and on the position of the emission band.

Copper- and Silver-Containing Heterometallic Iodobismuthates: Features of Thermochromic Behavior

Nine heterometallic iodobismuthates with the general formula Cat₂{[Bi₂M₂I₁₀}] (M = Cu(I), Ag(I), Cat = organic cation) were synthesized. According to X-ray diffraction data, their crystal structures consisted of {Bi₂I₁₀} units interconnected with Cu(I) or Ag(I) atoms through I-bridging ligands, forming one-dimensional polymers. The compounds are thermally stable up to 200 °C. Optical band gaps (E_g), estimated at room temperature via diffuse reflectance measurements, range from 1.81 to 2.03 eV. Thermally induced changes in optical behavior (thermochromism) for compounds 1-9 were recorded, and general correlations were established. The thermal dependence of E_g appears to be close to linear for all studied compounds.

Improved Synthesis of (TBA)2[W6Br14] Paving the Way to Further Study of Bromide Cluster Complexes

Octahedral cluster complexes of molybdenum and tungsten, [M₆X₈Y₆]^n- (M = Mo, W; X, Y = Cl, Br, I), are promising active components in various fields, including biomedicine and solar energy. Cluster complexes draw considerable attention due to their X-ray opacity, red/near-IR luminescence, and ability to convert triplet molecular oxygen to active singlet oxygen under UV and visible irradiation. Among the octahedral cluster complexes of molybdenum and tungsten, compounds with a {W₆Br₈}⁴⁺ core are the least studied. There are only a few examples of compounds with substituted terminal ligands, and their properties are not well understood. Among other things, this is due to more labor-intensive and expensive methods for obtaining the starting compounds in comparison with molybdenum counterparts. In this paper, we describe the synthesis of an octahedral cluster complex, (TBA)₂[W₆Br₁₄] (TBA⁺ = tetrabutylammonium), in gram quantities, starting from simple substances─W, Br₂, and Bi─in 70% yield. The formation of pentanuclear tungsten cluster complexes was recorded as a byproduct. Compounds with substituted terminal ligands (TBA)₂[W₆Br₈Y₆] (Y = NO₃, Cl, I) were obtained. We also discuss the instability of (TBA)₂[W₆Br₈(NO₃)₆] under light exposure, the optical properties of a series of compounds (TBA)₂[W₆Br₈Y₆] (Y = Cl, Br, I), and the effect of terminal ligands on the chemical shifts in ¹⁸³W NMR spectra in dimethyl sulfoxide-d₆. The presented approach to the synthesis of one of the main precursors of various bromide cluster complexes on a gram scale can stimulate the study of their properties and development of new functional materials based on them.

Selective Oxidation of Inner Pnictogenide Ligands in Mixed-Ligand Rhenium Cubane-Type Cluster Complexes

Reactivity of new tetrahedral rhenium cluster complexes with pnictogenide inner ligands μ₃-As^3-, μ₃-Sb^3-, and μ₃-Bi^3- has been investigated in reactions with aqueous H₂O₂. It has been found that the oxidation of clusters [{Re₄As₃Q}(CN)₁₂]^7- (Q = S or Se) led to the formation of stable clusters with μ₃-(AsO)^3- ligands. Under the same conditions, the oxidation of [{Re₄As₂S₂}(CN)₁₂]^6- cluster led to substitution of μ₃-As^3- ligands to μ₃-O^2-. The resulting cluster [{Re₄O₂S₂}(CN)₁₂]^4- easily undergoes further oxidation, and even at room temperature, a unique {Re₄} to {Re₃} rearrangement occurs with the formation of the new triangular cluster [{Re₃(μ₃-S)(μ-O)₂(μ-SO₂)}(CN)₉]^5-. Upon heating, this process proceeds faster and the triangular cluster can be isolated as individual compounds. Cluster anions [{Re₄SbSe₃}(CN)₁₂]^5- and [{Re₄BiS₃}(CN)₁₂]^5- reacted with H₂O₂, yielding clusters containing μ₃-O^2- ligands, namely, [{Re₄OSe₃}(CN)₁₂]^4- and [{Re₄OS₃}(CN)₁₂]^4-. This indicates that oxidized forms of μ₃-Sb^3- and μ₃-Bi^3- ligands can be easily substituted.

Coordination Polymers Based on Rhenium Octahedral Chalcocyanide Cluster Anions and Ag+ Cations with Bipyridine Analogs

A series of six coordination polymers based on octahedral cluster anions [Re₆Q₈(CN)₆]^4- (Q = S or Se) and Ag⁺ cations coordinated by bipyridine analogs were synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Their structures have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1 and 2 described by the general formula [{Ag(phen)}₄Re₆Q₈(CN)₆] (Q = Se (1), S (2); phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) exhibit layered structures assembled into a supramolecular network by CH…π contacts. At the same time, compounds [{Ag(bipym)}₂Ag₂Re₆Se₈(CN)₆] (bipym = 2,2'-bipyrimidine) (3), [{Ag₂(bipy)}Ag₂Re₆Se₈(CN)₆]·CH₃CN (bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine) (4) and [{Ag(dpbp)}₄Re₆Q₈(CN)₆]·2H₂O·2CH₃CN (Q = Se (5), S (6); dpbp = 4,4'-Di(4-pyridyl)biphenyl)) evince framework structures. In 1, 2, 5 and 6 weak Ag⋯Ag interactions are observed. All the compounds show luminescence in the red region. The luminescence quantum yields and lifetimes were found to be notably higher than those for most of the coordination polymers based on the octahedral rhenium cluster complexes.

Structural Diversity and Multielectron Reduction Reactivity of Samarium(II) Iodido-β-diketiminate Complexes Dependent on Tetrahydrofuran Content

The molecular structures of complexes [Sm(Nacnac)I(thf)_n] (Nacnac = HC(C(Me)Ndipp)₂^-, dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, thf = tetrahydrofuran) depending on the number of thf ligands are studied. The complete removal of thf from a known complex [Sm(Nacnac)I(thf)₂] leads to a tetranuclear product [Sm(Nacnac)I]₄ (4). The partial removal of thf results in mixtures of dinuclear [Sm₂(Nacnac)₂I₂(thf)] (2), trinuclear [Sm₃(Nacnac)₃I₃(thf)] (3), and tetranuclear [Sm₄(Nacnac)₄I₄(thf)₂] (4*) complexes and 4, depending on the conditions. The reaction of solvent-free SmI₂ with 1 equiv of K(Nacnac) results mainly in [Sm(Nacnac)₂] (1), while the interaction of 4 with certain amounts of thf allows obtaining pure 2 and 3 (with the admixture of 4*). Complex 4* is the exact dimer of 2, and both compounds are stable in solutions. Reactions with 3 and 4 as reductants are studied. 4 is oxidized by I₂ to stoichiometrically yield two products, mixed-valent tetranuclear [Sm₄(Nacnac)₄I₅] (5) and binuclear [Sm(Nacnac)I₂]₂ (6) complexes. In the reaction of 4 with ⁿBu₃PTe, a trinuclear complex [Sm₃(Nacnac)₃(μ-I)₃(μ₃-E)₂] (8, E = I or Te) is formed in small amounts, with the formation of 6 as the second product. 3 serves as a two-electron reductant in the reaction with ⁿBu₃PTe to yield a trinuclear complex [Sm₃(Nacnac)₃I₃(μ-Te₂)] (7). Complexes 2, 4, 4*, 5, 6, and 8 possess a unique flat Sm_xI_y core of heavy atoms, which is assumed to be a consequence of the Nacnac ligand geometry.

Molecular Environment Effects That Modulate the Photophysical Properties of Novel 1,3-Phosphinoamines Based on 2,1,3-Benzothiadiazole

We report synthesis, crystal structure, and photophysical properties of novel 1,3-phosphinoamines based on 4-amino-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (NH₂-btd): Ph₂PCH(Ph)NH-btd (1) and Ph₂P(E)CH(Ph)NH-btd, (E = O (2α and 2β·thf), S (3), Se (4)). Chalcogenides 2–4 exhibit bright emissions with a major band at 519–536 nm and a minor band at 840 nm. According to TD-DFT calculations, the first band is attributed to fluorescence, while the second band corresponds to phosphorescence. In the solid state, room temperature quantum yield reaches 93% in the case of the sulphide. The compounds under study feature effects of the molecular environment on the luminescent properties, which manifest themselves in fluorosolvatochromism as well as in a luminescent response to changes in crystal packing and in contributions to aggregation effects. Specifically, transformation of solid 2β·thf to solvate-free 2β either by aging or by grinding causes crystal packing changes, and, as a result, a hypsochromic shift of the emission band. Polystyrene films doped with 2 reveal a bathochromic shift upon increasing the mass fraction from 0.2 to 3.3%, which is caused by molecular aggregation effects.

Sterically Hindered Tellurium(IV) Catecholate as a Lewis Acid

Sterically hindered tellurium catecholate Te(Cat³⁶)₂ (Cat³⁶ = 3,6-di-tert-butyl-catecholate) was synthesized with the reaction of amorphous Te with 3,6-di-tert-butyl-o-benzoquinone. Adducts of Te(Cat³⁶)₂ with various O- and N-donors were isolated and characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction along with IR, UV-vis, and NMR (¹H, ¹³C, and ¹²⁵Te) spectroscopies. In the crystal structure of the adduct with 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy), the unprecedented μ-κ²N,N':κ²N,N'-bridging coordination mode of bipy was observed. Various intermolecular interactions Te...O, Te...N, and Te...C in adducts were analyzed using density functional theory calculations and quantum theory of atoms in molecules analysis. The estimated strength for appropriate short contacts varies from 0.9 to 5.3 kcal/mol, and they are attractive and purely non-covalent.

Zn(II) and Co(II) 3D Coordination Polymers Based on 2-Iodoterephtalic Acid and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane: Structures and Sorption Properties

Metal-organic frameworks [M₂(2-I-bdc)₂bpe] (M = Zn(II) (1), Co(II) (2), 2-I-bdc = 2-iodoterephtalic acid, and bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffractometry. Both compounds retain their 3D structure after the removal of guest DMF molecules. Selectivity of sorption of different organic substrates from the gas phase was investigated for both complexes.

Synthesis and photophysical properties of rare earth complexes bearing silanediamido ligands Me2Si(NAryl)22− (Aryl = Dipp, Mes)

Luminescence of the newly obtained silanediamides of rare earths was investigated. The triplet states of the ligands {Me2Si(NAryl)2}2− (Aryl = Dpp, Mes) were determined by the emission of Gd complexes, and the bright emission of Tb3+ was observed.

On the usability of salt metathesis reactions for the synthesis of sterically crowded tris-formamidinate Ln(iii) complexes: success and limits. Spontaneous reduction of Eu(iii) to Eu(ii)

New homoleptic complexes of Eu3+ and Nd3+ bearing three bulky N,N′-bis(diisopropylphenyl)formamidinates were prepared using salt metathesis in a toluene medium. In the presence of THF, the sterically-induced reduction of Eu3+ to Eu2+ was observed.

Heterometallic Re/Mo and Re/W cubane-type cluster complexes

A series of heterometallic Re/Mo and Re/W cubane-type cluster complexes were obtained. New cluster anions demonstrate a regular change in geometric characteristics and redox potentials depending on the composition of the cluster core.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Luminescence of Cadmium(II) and Silver(I) Coordination Polymers Based on 1,3-Bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)adamantane

Coordination polymers with a new rigid ligand 1,3-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)adamantane (L) were prepared by its reaction with cadmium(II) or silver(I) nitrates. Crystal structure of the coordination polymers was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Silver formed two-dimensional coordination polymer [Ag(L)NO₃]_n, in which metal ions are linked by 1,3-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)adamantane ligands, coordinated by nitrogen atoms at positions 2 and 4 of 1,2,4-triazole rings. Layers of the coordination polymer consist of rare 18- and 30-membered {Ag₂L₂} and {Ag₄L₄} metallocycles. Cadmium(II) nitrate formed two kinds of one-dimensional coordination polymers depending on the metal-to-ligand ratio used in the synthesis. Coordination polymer [Cd(L)₂(NO₃)₂]_n was obtained in case of a 1:2 M:L ratio, while for M:L = 2:1 product {[Cd(L)(NO₃)₂(CH₃OH)]·0.5CH₃OH}_n was isolated. All coordination polymers demonstrated ligand-centered emission near 450 nm upon excitation at 370 nm.

Coordination-induced emission enhancement in copper(I) iodide coordination polymers supported by 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidines

First examples of copper(i) complexes with 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidine ligands have been synthesized. Reactions of copper(i) iodide with 2-(methylsulfanyl)pyrimidine (L1) in various metal-to-ligand molar ratios in MeCN afford a ladder-type coordination polymer [Cu2L1I2]n with polymeric chains built from double-stranded (Cu2I2)n ribbons supported on both sides by μ2-N,S-L1 molecules. Although the second ligand, 2-(ethylsulfanyl)pyrimidine (L2), differs from L1 only by a methylene group, its reactions with copper(i) iodide in MeCN yield not only a congenerous coordination polymer, [Cu2L2I2]n, but also [CuL2I]n, in which a similar (Cu2I2)n ribbon is decorated by N-monodentate L2 molecules. Absorption spectra of all compounds represent an interplay of metal + iodine-to-ligand charge transfer (XMLCT) and ligand-centered (LC) and cluster-centered (CC) transitions, while the emission occurs from the excited states of XMLCT nature. The luminescence of [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]n is blue-shifted and greatly enhanced in comparison with that of [CuL2I]n (quantum yields: 89% and 68% for [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]nvs. 23% for [CuL2I]n at 77 K), which can be associated with a more rigid μ2-N,S coordination of 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidine ligands in [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]n leading to a less distorted T1 state.

Synthesis, Structure, and Spectroscopic Study of Redox-Active Heterometallic Cluster-Based Complexes [Re5MoSe8(CN)6]n

The heterometallic cluster-based compound K₅[Re₅MoSe₈(CN)₆] was obtained by high-temperature reaction from a mixture of ReSe₂ and MoSe₂ in molten potassium cyanide. The redox behavior of the [Re₅MoSe₈(CN)₆]^5- cluster anion was studied by cyclic voltammetry in aqueous and organic media showing two reversible one-electron-redox transitions with E_1/2 of -0.462 and 0.357 V versus Ag/AgCl in CH₃CN. Aqueous media potentials were found to be noticeably shifted to higher values because of solvation. Chemically accessible potentials allowed us to structurally isolate and characterize the [Re₅MoSe₈(CN)₆]ⁿ (n = 3-, 4-, and 5-) cluster complex in several charge states with corresponding cluster skeletal electron (CSE) numbers ranging from 24 to 22. The electronic absorption of the [Re₅MoSe₈(CN)₆]ⁿ cluster complex varies significantly upon a change of the CSE number, especially in the visible and near-IR regions. The local cluster core distortion upon electron removal was confirmed by density functional theory calculation, while the overall geometry of the cluster anion remained practically unaltered.

Keggin-type polyoxometalate 1 : 1 complexes of Pb(II) and Bi(III): experimental, theoretical and luminescence studies

Bi3+ and Pb2+ uptake by a monolacunary Keggin-type [PW11O39]7- anion leads to the formation of [PW11O39Bi]4- and [PW11O39Pb]5- complexes with a stereochemically active lone pair at the incorporated heterometal. The two complexes were isolated as (TBA)4[PW11O39Bi] (1) and (TBA)5[PW11O39Pb] (2) and characterized by 31P and 183W NMR spectroscopy, high-resolution electrospray mass-spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). EXAFS and XANES data confirm the unchanged oxidation state and ψ-square pyramidal geometry of Bi3+ and Pb2+ in 1 and 2. DFT calculations were used in order to (i) confirm the absence of ligands attached to the heterometal sites in both complexes and localize the lone pair, and (ii) assign all signals in the 183W NMR spectra. Complexes 1 and 2 demonstrate photoluminescence (PL). A reversible change in the PL spectra of both complexes in the presence of water vapor has been detected. On the contrary, PL data for sandwich-type ((CH3)4N)4K3[H4(PW11O39)2Bi]·25H2O (3) do not show sensitivity to water vapor.

Paramagnetic Rhenium Iodide Cluster with N-Heterocyclic Carbene

triangulo-Trirhenium nonaiodide Re₃I₉ reacts with 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) to produce the novel 13-electron paramagnetic cluster Re₃I₈(IMes)₂, which was characterized by means of X-ray diffraction analysis, ESR spectroscopy, magnetometry, and quantum chemistry.

Unexpectedly Long Lifetime of the Excited State of Benzothiadiazole Derivative and Its Adducts with Lewis Acids

We report a study of photoluminescent properties of 4-bromo-7-(3-pyridylamino)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (Py-btd) and its novel Lewis adducts: (PyH-btd)₂(ZnCl₄) and [Cu₂Cl₂(Py-btd)₂{PPO}₂]·2C₇H₈ (PPO = tetraphenyldiphosphine monoxide), whose crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Py-btd exhibits a lifetime of 9 microseconds indicating its phosphorescent nature, which is rare for purely organic compounds. This phenomenon arises from the heavy atom effect: the presence of a bromine atom in Py-btd promotes mixing of the singlet and triplet states to allow efficient singlet-to-triplet intersystem crossing. The Lewis adducts also feature a microsecond lifetime while emitting in a higher energy range than free Py-btd, which opens up the possibility to color-tune luminescence of benzothiadiazole derivatives.

Unexpected Polymorphism in Bromoantimonate(III) Complexes and Its Effect on Optical Properties

Reactions of [SbBr₆]^3- containing HBr solutions with bromide salts of 1,1'-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis(pyridine) (PyC₂²⁺) or 1,1'-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis(3,5-dimethylpyridine) (3,5-MePyC₂²⁺) initially result in the formation of the deep orange complexes Cat[SbBr₅] (1 and 2), featuring unusual Sb···Br interactions in the solid state. In the mother liquor, 1 transforms into discrete binuclear (C₂Py)₂[Sb₂Br₁₀], which demonstrates polymorphism (triclinic 3 and monoclinic 4), while 2 transforms into polymeric (3,5-MePy){[SbBr₄]} (5). DFT calculations reveal that the system of noncovalent Sb···Br contacts may be responsible for the appearance of the observed optical properties (unusual deep orange coloring).

Photo- and triboluminescent robust 1D polymers made of Mn(ii) halides and meta-carborane based bis(phosphine oxide)

A Sterically Hindered Derivative of 2,1,3-Benzotelluradiazole: A Way to the First Structurally Characterised Monomeric Tellurium-Nitrogen Radical Anion

Interaction of the tetradentate redox-active 6,6'-[1,2-phenylenebis(azanediyl)]bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenol) (H₄ L) with TeCl₄ leads to neutral diamagnetic compound TeL (1) in high yield. The molecule of 1 has a nearly planar TeN₂ O₂ fragment, which suggests the formulation of 1 as Te^II L^2- , in agreement with the results of DFT calculations and QTAIM and NBO analyses. Reduction of 1 with one equivalent of [CoCp₂ ] leads to quantitative formation of the paramagnetic salt [CoCp₂ ]⁺ [1]^.- , which was characterised by single-crystal XRD. The solution EPR spectrum of [CoCp₂ ]⁺ [1]^.- at room temperature features a quintet due to splitting on two equivalent ¹⁴ N nuclei. Below 150 K it turns into a broad singlet line with two weak satellites due to the splitting on the ¹²⁵ Te nucleus. Two-component relativistic DFT calculations perfectly reproduce the a(¹⁴ N) HFI constants and A_∥ (¹²⁵ Te) value responsible for the low-temperature satellite splitting. Calculations predict that the additional electron in 1^.- is localised mainly on L, while the spin density is delocalised over the whole molecule with significant localisation on the Te atom (≥30 %). All these data suggest that 1^.- can be regarded as the first example of a structurally characterised monomeric tellurium-nitrogen radical anion.

Lanthanide Complexes with a Tripodal Nitroxyl Radical Showing Strong Magnetic Coupling

A series of isomorphous mononuclear complexes of Ln(III) ions comprising one stable tripodal oxazolidine nitroxyl radical were obtained in acetonitrile media starting from nitrates. The compounds, [LnRad(NO₃)₃] (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Tm, Y; Rad = 4,4-dimethyl-2,2-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,3-oxazolidine-3-oxyl), have a molecular structure. Their coordination polyhedron, LnO₇N₂, can be described as a tricapped trigonal prism with symmetry not far from D_3h. The extracted value of 23 cm^-1 for the antiferromagnetic coupling of Gd-Rad established from the DC magnetic and EPR data is a record strength for the complexes of 4f elements with nitroxyl radicals. The terbium derivative displays frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals in zero field, indicating single-molecule magnetic behavior. With an applied field of 0.1 T, an effective barrier of 57 cm^-1 is found.

Arene-Ruthenium(II) Complexes Containing 11H-Indeno[1,2-b]quinoxalin-11-one Derivatives and Tryptanthrin-6-oxime: Synthesis, Characterization, Cytotoxicity, and Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Aryl Ketones

A series of novel mono- and binuclear arene-ruthenium(II) complexes [(p-cym)Ru(L)Cl] containing 11H-indeno[1,2-b]quinoxalin-11-one derivatives or tryptanthrin-6-oxime were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, IR, NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and elemental analysis. Theoretical calculations invoking singlet state geometry optimization, solvation effects, and noncovalent interactions were done using density functional theory (DFT). DFT calculations were also applied to evaluate the electronic properties, and time-dependent DFT was applied to clarify experimental UV-vis results. Cytotoxicity for cancerous and noncancerous human cell lines was evaluated with cell viability MTT assay. Complexes demonstrated a moderate cytotoxic effect toward cancerous human cell line PANC-1. The catalytic activity of the complexes was evaluated in transfer hydrogenation of aryl ketones. All complexes exhibited good catalytic activity and functional group tolerance.

Soluble Molecular Rhenium Cluster Complexes Exhibiting Multistage Terminal Ligands Reduction

Substitution of terminal halide ligands of octahedral rhenium cluster complexes [Re₆Q₈X₆]^4- in a melt of 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) led to us obtaining four new compounds with the general formula trans-[Re₆Q₈(bpy)₄X₂] (Q = S or Se; X = Cl or Br) in high yield. In contrast to most of the known molecular rhenium cluster complexes with heteroaromatic terminal ligands, compounds 1-4 are soluble in organic solvents. This made it possible to carry out a detailed characterization of the new compounds both in solids and in solutions. In particular, it was shown that compounds 1-4 in the DMSO solution exhibit four reversible reduction processes. A comparison of the obtained data with the results of DFT calculations of the electronic structure suggests that these processes correspond to two-electron reduction of all four bpy ligands. The reduction potentials are shifted to the positive region compared with the potential of free bipyridine, and the value of the shift depends on the composition of the cluster core. The presence of four transitions also suggests that electronic exchange between terminal ligands in the cis-position is possible. The study of the luminescence of the compounds showed that emission maxima of selenide clusters almost coincide with those of sulfide ones, while luminescence spectra of the complexes with chloride terminal ligands (1 and 3) are slightly blue-shifted relative to the spectra of the complexes with bromide ligands (2 and 4).
