Dual Structure of a Vanadyl-Based Molecular Qubit Containing a Bis(β-diketonato) Ligand

We designed [VO(bdhb)] (1') as a new electronic qubit containing an oxovanadium(IV) ion (S = 1/2) embraced by a single bis(β-diketonato) ligand [H2bdhb = 1,3-bis(3,5-dioxo-1-hexyl)benzene]. The synthesis afforded three different crystal phases, all of which unexpectedly contain dimers with formula [(VO)2(bdhb)2] (1). A trigonal form (1h) with a honeycomb structure and 46% of solvent-accessible voids quantitatively transforms over time into a monoclinic solvatomorph 1m and minor amounts of a triclinic solventless phase (1a). In a static magnetic field, 1h and 1m have detectably slow magnetic relaxation at low temperatures through quantum tunneling and Raman mechanisms. Angle-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra on single crystals revealed signatures of low-dimensional magnetic behavior, which is solvatomorph-dependent, being the closest interdimer V···V separations (6.7-7.5 Å) much shorter than intramolecular V···V distances (11.9-12.1 Å). According to 1H diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) and EPR experiments, the complex adopts the desired monomeric structure in organic solution and its geometry was inferred from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Spin relaxation measurements in a frozen toluene-d8/CD2Cl2 matrix yielded Tm values reaching 13 μs at 10 K, and coherent spin manipulations were demonstrated by Rabi nutation experiments at 70 K. The neutral quasi-macrocyclic structure, featuring nuclear spin-free donors and additional possibilities for chemical functionalization, makes 1' a new convenient spin-coherent building block in quantum technologies.

Identification of a potent palladium-aryldiphosphine catalytic system for high-performance carbonylation of alkenes

The development of stable and efficient ligands is of vital significance to enhance the catalytic performance of carbonylation reactions of alkenes. Herein, an aryldiphosphine ligand (L11) bearing the [Ph2P(ortho-C6H4)]2CH2 skeleton is reported for palladium-catalyzed regioselective carbonylation of alkenes. Compared with the industrially successful Pd/1,2-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinomethyl)benzene catalyst, catalytic efficiency catalyzed by Pd/L11 on methoxycarbonylation of ethylene is obtained, exhibiting better catalytic performance (TON: >2,390,000; TOF: 100,000 h-1; selectivity: >99%) and stronger oxygen-resistance stability. Moreover, a substrate compatibility (122 examples) including chiral and bioactive alkenes or alcohols is achieved with up to 99% yield and 99% regioselectivity. Experimental and computational investigations show that the appropriate bite angle of aryldiphosphine ligand and the favorable interaction of 1,4-dioxane with Pd/L11 synergistically contribute to high activity and selectivity while the electron deficient phosphines originated from electron delocalization endow L11 with excellent oxygen-resistance stability.

Octahedral Tantalum Bromide Clusters as Catalysts for Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

The development of an efficient hydrogen generation strategy from aqueous protons using sunlight is a current challenge aimed at the production of low-cost, easily accessible, renewable molecular hydrogen. For achieving this goal, non-noble metal containing and highly active catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are desirable. Octahedral tantalum halide clusters {Ta6(μ-X)12}2+ (X = halogen) represent an emerging class of such HER photocatalysts. In this work, the photocatalytic properties of octahedral aqua tantalum bromide clusters toward HER and in acid and homogeneous aqueous conditions were investigated. The [{Ta6Bri12}Bra2(H2O)a4]·4H2O (i = inner ligand; a = apical ligand) compound is revealed to be an efficient precatalyst in acid (HBr) conditions and with methanol as the sacrificial agent. A response surface methodology (RSM) study was applied for the optimization of the HER conditions, considering the concentrations of both additives (methanol and HBr) as independent variables. An optimal H2 production of 11 mmol·g-1 (TON = 25) was achieved, which displays exceptional catalytic properties compared to regular Ta-based materials. The aqua tantalum bromide clusters assist in the photocatalytic hydrogen generation in agreement with energy-conversion schemes, and plausible active catalytic species and a reaction mechanism were proposed from computational and experimental perspectives.

Photocaging of Carboxylic Function Bearing Biomolecules by New Thiazole Derived Fluorophore

The design and synthesis of a new fluorophore containing an arylidene thiazole scaffold resulted in a compound with good photophysical characteristics. Furthermore, the thiazole C5-methyl group was easily modified into specific functional groups (CH2 Br and CH2 OH) for the formation of a series of photocourier molecules containing model compounds (benzoic acids), as well as prodrugs, including salicylic acid, caffeic acid, and chlorambucil via a "benzyl" linker. Spectral characteristics (1 H, 13 C NMR, and high-resolution mass spectra) corresponded to the proposed structures. The photocourier molecules demonstrated absorption with high values of coefficient of molar extinction, exhibited contrasting green emission, and showed good dark stability. The mechanism of the photorelease was investigated through spectral analysis, HPLC-HRMS, and supported by TD-DFT calculations. The photoheterolysis and elimination of carboxylic acids were proved to occur in the excited state, yielding a carbocation as an intermediate moiety. The fluorophore structure provided stability to the carbocation through the delocalization of the positive charge via resonance structures. Viability assessment of Vero cells using the MTT-test confirmed the weak cytotoxicity of prodrugs without irradiation and it increase upon UV-light.

Simple and biodegradable mesoporous silica nanocarriers for enhancing antitumor therapy through photochemical synergism

The biosafety and degradability of nanocarriers have always been an important factor restricting their entry into the clinic. In this work, a new nano-system was prepared by coating the photothermal effect of dopamine-doped mesoporous silica nanoparticles with carboxymethyl chitin through electrostatic interaction, and is further anchored with folic acid on the surface for targeted delivery of anti-cancer the drug doxorubicin (DOX). The nano-system (DOX@PDA/MSN-CMCS-FA) is simply modified CMCS after being loaded with DOX and has good dispersibility, and the drug loading is 10.6%. In vitro release studies have shown that the release rate of PDA/MSN-CMCS-FA is 40% in pH 5.5. Effective degradation is debris in 14 d acidic environments. Due to the anti-infrared photothermal effects of PDA doping and DOX chemotherapy, the semi-lethal concentration (IC50) of nanoparticles (NPS) was 14.95 μg/mL, which can inhibit tumor cell growth by photochemical synergistic treatment, and have certain degradation performance.

Fluorescent nano-sized aggregates of halogen bonded complexes formed using perfluoropropyl iodides: a systematic comparison between two isomeric halogen bond acceptors, aniline and 4-methyl pyridine

The halogen bonds (XB) formed by the two isomers 4-methyl pyridine (MePy) and aniline (ANL) with heptafluoro-1-propyl iodide (n-C₃F₇I) and heptafluoro-2-propyl iodide (iso-C₃F₇I) were investigated using vibrational (FT-IR and Raman) spectroscopy and quantum mechanical calculations. While these two isomers indicated a distinctive impact on the ring related vibrations, molecular electrostatic potential, frontier molecular orbitals, intermolecular electron density delocalisation and consequential charge transfer upon halogen bonding with n-C₃F₇I and iso-C₃F₇I, the dramatic intermolecular charge transfer (CT) occurring on the MePy involved XB systems demonstrated an ion-pair like aggregation. Such aggregation, after 72 h and longer after mixing, leads to an emission of fluorescence for both [MePy·C₃F₇I] systems. The resulting nano-sized aggregates were characterised using UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy along with scanning and transmittance electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), wherein, the XB complex with iso-C₃F₇I showed a faster and more severe aggregation due to a stronger CT than that with n-C₃F₇I. The present work is the first case of aggregation induced emission (AIE) due to aggregation of XB complexes formed by small neutral molecules.

Novel carbon nanozymes with enhanced phosphatase-like catalytic activity for antimicrobial applications

In this work, Sulfur and Nitrogen co-doped carbon nanoparticles (SN-CNPs) were synthesized by hydrothermal method using dried beet powder as the carbon source. TEM and AFM images indicated that these SN-CNPs form a round-shape ball with an approximate diameter of 50 nm. The presence of Sulfur and Nitrogen in these carbon-based nanoparticles was confirmed by FTIR and XPS analyses. These SN-CNPs were found to have strong phosphatase-like enzymatic activity. The enzymatic behavior of SN-CNPs follows the Michaelis-Menten mechanism with greater v_max and much lower K_m values compared to alkaline phosphatase. Their antimicrobial properties were tested on E. coli and L. lactis, with MIC values of 63 μg mL^-1 and 250 μg mL^-1, respectively. SEM and AFM images of fixed and live E. coli cells revealed that SN-CNPs strongly interacted with the outer membranes of bacterial cells, significantly increasing the cell surface roughness. The chemical interaction between SN-CNPs and phospholipid modeled using quantum mechanical calculations further support our hypothesis that the phosphatase and antimicrobial properties of SN-CNPs are due to the thiol group on the SN-CNPs, which is a mimic of the cysteine-based protein phosphatase. The present work is the first to report carbon-based nanoparticles with strong phosphatase activity and propose a phosphatase natured antimicrobial mechanism. This novel class of carbon nanozymes has the potential to be used for effective catalytic and antibacterial applications.

5-Amino-2-aryl-2H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxamides: Unique AIEE-gens and selective Hg2+ fluorosensors

A series of fluorescent sensors based on small molecule were designed and fully characterised, demonstrating AIEE effect and revealing an outstanding ability to selectively detect Hg²⁺ ions. The structural and electronic properties were studied through quantum chemical calculations at (Time-Dependent) Density Functional Theory ((TD)-DFT) level. Carboxamides of 2-Aryl-1,2,3-Triazoles (CATs) showed significant differences in their photophysical properties depending on the structure of the substituent at amino function on the C5-atom in the heterocycle. When the tert-cycloalkylamino group (pyrrolidine, piperidine, azepane) was attached, the triazoles exhibited highly intensive blue fluorescence, with quantum yields (QYs) up to 95 % and lifetime up to 6.9 ns in different solvents, whereas the QYs of congeners bearing secondary alkylaminogroups (viz., NHMe, NHC₆H₁₁-cyclo) indicate low QYs (1-10 %). Nevertheless, all types of the obtained fluorophores demonstrated excellent AIEE effect and formed fluorescent nanoparticles in a binary mixtures of organic solvents and water. The introduction of the carboxamide function enhances the sensing properties of 2-aryl-1,2,3-triazoles, providing a selective fluorescence quenching reaction in the presence of Hg²⁺. The fluorescence intensity of the CATs declines with the addition of 1.0 eq. of Hg²⁺ into DMSO-water (v/v, 1:9). The other cations used did not induce any appreciable changes in fluorescence intensity. The CATs form a complex with Hg²⁺ with highly specific detection for Hg²⁺ over other competitive metal ions: the detection limits were determined to be 0.23 and 0.15 μM for the CATs 1b and 2c. The reverse effect was registered with the addition of ethylene diamine sodium salt; meanwhile, the CATs demonstrated more effective coordination with Hg²⁺ in comparison with cysteine. This last finding, as well as the ability to detect Hg²⁺, is very valuable for application within biology and medicine.

NMR-Relaxometric Investigation of Mn(II)-Doped Polyoxometalates in Aqueous Solutions

Solution behavior of K;₅[(Mn(H₂O))PW₁₁O₃₉]·7H₂O (1), Na_3.66(NH₄)_4.74H_3.1[(Mn^II(H₂O))_2.75(WO(H₂O))_0.25(α-B-SbW₉O₃₃)₂]·27H₂O (2), and Na_4.6H_3.4[(Mn^II(H₂O)₃)₂(WO₂)₂(β-B-TeW₉O₃₃)₂]·19H₂O (3) was studied with NMR-relaxometry and HPLC-ICP-AES (High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy). According to the data, the [(Mn(H₂O))PW₁₁O₃₉]^5- Keggin-type anion is the most stable in water among the tested complexes, even in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA). Aqueous solutions of 2 and 3 anions are less stable and contain other species resulting from dissociation of Mn²⁺. Quantum chemical calculations show the change in Mn²⁺ electronic state between [Mn(H₂O)₆]²⁺ and [(Mn(H₂O))PW₁₁O₃₉]^5-.

Carbon nanoparticles induce DNA repair and PARP inhibitor resistance associated with nanozyme activity in cancer cells

Background

Quantum nanodots especially carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) have been widely studied in biomedicine in imaging, and drug delivery, but anti-cancer mechanisms remain elusive.

Methods

Here, we investigated a type of cell death induced by food (beet, soybean) derived CNPs in cancer cells and tested whether CNPs induced DNA damage and resistant to anti-cancer agent PARP inhibitor (PARPi) could be overcome by quantum calculations, TEM, AFM, FT-IR, soft agar assay, and cytotoxicity assay.

Results

At high doses, CNPs derived from beet lead to a pop-like apoptosis (Carbopoptosis) in cancer cells. Quantum mechanical calculations confirmed CNPs binding with phosphate groups as well as DNA bases. At low doses, CNPs develop PARPi drug resistance through interactions between CNPs and PARPi. A synergistic drug effect was achieved with the combination of phosphatase inhibitor (PPi), PARPi, and CNPs. This is corroborated by the fact that sulfur modulated CNPs which exhibit super high phosphatase nanozyme activity abrogated the CNPs induced colony formation in anchorage-independent cancer cell growth.

Conclusion

Thus, our data suggest the CNPs intrinsic nanozyme activity of phosphatase may crosstalk with drug resistance, which can be reversed upon modulations.

Intermolecular interactions in the crystalline structure of some polyhalogenated Di- And triamino Pyridines: Spectroscopical perspectives

Supramolecular synthon is identified as a unit and provides important structural and energetic information in the study of organic crystals. However, the direct estimation of the supramolecular interaction remains challenging. In the present work six polyhalogenated di- or triamino pyridines were synthesised, their crystalline structure was characterised, and corresponding supramolecular synthons were studied using a combination of quantum mechanical calculations and FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. Some distinctive features were identified especially for three vibrational normal modes (RNMs) related to the pyridine ring (viz. RNM₁, RNM₃ and RNM₇) in the vibrational spectra (FT-IR and Raman) of the solid samples, which are due to the supramolecular interactions, hydrogen bond (hb) in particular, according to the quantum mechanical calculations. The comparison between the IR and Raman spectra of experimental and simulated results indicates that the adjacent intermolecular hydrogen bonds between two same molecules extensively exist in the solid samples. Moreover, some quantitative correlation was established among the dimerisation energies for hb dimers (hb1 dimers for compounds 1 and 2), the ring structure defined by the distribution of the substituents and quantitative characteristics of the vibrational spectra, for instance, the splitting magnitudes for RNM₃(2) in IR spectra and the peak gap between RNM₁ and RNM₂ in Raman spectra.

Computational Investigation of Substituent Effects on the Fluorescence Wavelengths of Oxyluciferin Analogs

Oxyluciferin, which is the light emitter for firefly bioluminescence, has been subjected to extensive chemical modifications to tune its emission wavelength and quantum yield. However, the exact mechanisms for various electron-donating and withdrawing groups to perturb the photophysical properties of oxyluciferin analogs are still not fully understood. To elucidate the substituent effects on the fluorescence wavelength of oxyluciferin analogs, we applied the absolutely localized molecular orbitals (ALMO)-based frontier orbital analysis to assess various types of interactions (i.e. permanent electrostatics/exchange repulsion, polarization, occupied-occupied orbital mixing, virtual-virtual orbital mixing, and charge-transfer) between the oxyluciferin and substituent orbitals. We suggested two distinct mechanisms that can lead to red-shifted oxyluciferin emission wavelength, a design objective that can help increase the tissue penetration of bioluminescence emission. Within the first mechanism, an electron-donating group (such as an amino or dimethylamino group) can contribute its highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to an out-of-phase combination with oxyluciferin's HOMO, thus raising the HOMO energy of the substituted analog and narrowing its HOMO-LUMO gap. Alternatively, an electron-withdrawing group (such as a nitro or cyano group) can participate in an in-phase virtual-virtual orbital mixing of fragment LUMOs, thus lowering the LUMO energy of the substituted analog. Such an ALMO-based frontier orbital analysis is expected to lead to intuitive principles for designing analogs of not only the oxyluciferin molecule, but also many other functional dyes.

Niobium and Tantalum Halocyanide Clusters: The Complete Family

Synthetic procedures providing straightforward access to the whole family of Nb and Ta halide clusters with terminal cyanide ligands have been developed. Corresponding [M₆X₁₂(CN)₁₂]^4- (M = Nb, Ta; X = Cl, Br) can be accessed by ligand-exchange procedures from K₄Nb₆X₁₈ (X = Cl, Br) and Bu₄NCN, (Et₄N)₂[Ta₆Cl₁₈] and Bu₄NCN and from [Ta₆Br₁₂(H₂O)₄Br₂]·4H₂O and KCN in moderate to high yields (50-80%). The products were isolated as Bu₄N salts. The compounds were investigated both experimentally and by quantum chemistry, revealing correlations between structural, electrochemical, electrostatic, electronic, and topological features as a function of type of metal, halide, and charge.

How do electron donating substituents affect the electronic structure, molecular topology, vibrational properties and intra- and intermolecular interactions of polyhalogenated pyridines?

Seven polyhalogenated pyridine derivatives bearing an amino or a hydroxyl group, either at the ortho or para position, were studied using a combined experimental and computational approach. The presence of an electron donating substituent strongly impacted on the geometry, electronic structure, electrostatic properties, molecular topology and vibrational characteristics of these compounds compared to the corresponding polyhalogenated pyridines. In particular the attention was focused on changes in wavenumbers, force constants and intensity of the seven in-plane Ring Normal Modes (RNMs). Due to the nature and position of the substituents, intra- and intermolecular interactions also underwent dramatic modifications, as revealed using Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis, Non-Covalent Interaction (NCI) analysis and Atom-In-Molecule (AIM) theory. Raman and FT-IR spectra of these seven compounds were also collected in solid phase and rationalised by the simulated spectra for hydrogen bonding and/or π-π stacking based homodimers. The present study provides a strategy not only for the vibrational characterisation for the individual compounds, but also for shedding light on the ways of molecular packing in the molecular crystals or cocrystals involving these compounds.

An inexpensive density functional theory-based protocol to predict accurate 19 F-NMR chemical shifts

Thanks to its advantages, ¹⁹ F-NMR is an increasingly popular technique for the structural characterization of F-containing molecules, among which polymers, materials, fluorophores, pharmaceuticals, and so forth. However, the computational calculation of the ¹⁹ F-NMR chemical shifts, both for prediction and interpretation of experimental spectra, remains a challenge. In this work a density functional theory (DFT) based protocol for the calculation of the chemical shifts is established within the framework of the gauge-independent atomic orbital method, upon verifying the performance of Hartree-Fock and 60 DFT functionals coupled with seven different basis sets. The benchmark is conducted using two sets of molecules, namely one used for testing methods and another used for probing; the former set consists of 134 molecules, the latter 50, yet both of them with F in different chemical environments. Following Bally-Rablen-Tantillo strategy, the scaling parameters and other statistical quantities were computed for each method upon least squares linear regression between experimental and computed chemical shifts. The designed computational workflow is computationally inexpensive and represents a significant improvement with respect to the current state of the art.

Photophysics, photochemistry and bioimaging application of 8-azapurine derivatives

New 2-aryl-1,2,3-triazolopyrimidines were designed, synthesized, and characterized. Their optical properties were thoroughly studied in the solid phase, in solution and in a biological environment. Density Functional Theory (DFT) based calculations were performed, including the molecular geometry optimization for both the ground state and the first singlet excited state, the prediction of the UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectra, the determination of the molecular electrostatic properties and the solvent effect on the optical properties. The emission intensity was revealed to increase in time upon irradiation. Mass spectrometric research, quantum mechanical calculations, and analysis of literature data suggested a possible photo-transformation pathway through the homolytic cleavage of one of the C-Cl bonds upon irradiation with UV light. The structure of the active intermediate was identified by the series of mass spectrometry experiments and via synthesis of putative transformation products. The kinetic parameters measured in different solvents allowed estimating the rate of these photo-transformations. Biological experiments demonstrated that 2-aryl-1,2,3-triazolopyrimidines penetrate cells and selectively accumulate in the cell membrane and the Golgi complex and endoplasmic reticulum. Their unique properties pave the way for new possible applications of fluorescent 8-azapurines in biology and medicine.

Impact of fluorination and chlorination on the electronic structure, topology and in-plane ring normal modes of pyridines

Seven partially and fully fluorinated/chlorinated pyridines were investigated by means of FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy combined with quantum chemical calculations, mainly aiming to detect how the nature and position of F and Cl substituents affect the in-plane ring normal modes (RNMs) of pyridines in terms of vibrational wavenumbers, force constants, IR intensities and Raman activities. Taking pyridine as the reference, the RNMs and some derived RNMs through coupling with related C-X (X = F, Cl) stretching vibrations were identified on the basis of their composition in terms of internal coordinates. The impact of fluorination and chlorination on these RNMs was also discussed from the perspective of frontier molecular orbitals (MOs), maps of the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) and the molecular topology. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis revealed the consequences of substitutions on the intramolecular charge delocalisation and consequently the ring bond strength. Moreover, the effects of anharmonicity of the potential on vibrational frequencies were presented and discussed.

Selective oxidative intermolecular carbosulphenylation of aryl alkenes with thiols and nucleophiles via a 1,2-dithioethane intermediate

A periodate lithium-oxidized difunctionalisation of aryl alkenes with thiols and electron-rich aromatics was achieved, selectively affording more than thirty carbosulphenylated products. Both experiments and quantum chemical calculations demonstrated the radical-polar nature of the processes, and that 1,2-dithioethane and thiiranium ions might play the role of intermediates.

Concealed Wireless Warning Sensor Based on Triboelectrification and Human-Plant Interactive Induction

With the continuous development of artificial intelligence, the demand for sensors with simple preparation and strong concealment continues to increase. However, most of the high-sensitivity sensors have complex manufacturing methods, high costs, and single functions. In this paper, a sensitive motion sensor based on the triboelectric interaction between a living plant and the human body was designed to detect the real-time movements of human beings and provide danger warning. A certain relationship exists between the triboelectric signal and the distance between the plant and the human body, with effective signals being detected in the range of 1.8 m. In addition, the triboelectric signal generated by each person is unique like a fingerprint, which can be used for biometrics. On the basis of the triboelectric signal, a wireless character entry warning system is designed. This sensor can not only send out a wireless warning signal at a specific distance but also allow one to receive the warning information synchronously on a mobile phone in real time. The wireless movement sensor receives signals through a living plant, and it has the characteristics of convenient use, strong concealment, and shielding difficulty. This sensor has the potential to be widely used in person recognition, danger warning, and motion monitoring.

Generation of particle assemblies mimicking enzymatic activity by processing of herbal food: the case of rhizoma polygonati and other natural ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine

Processed herbs have been widely used in eastern and western medicine; however, the mechanism of their medicinal effects has not yet been revealed. It is commonly believed that a central role is played by chemically active molecules produced by the herbs' metabolism. In this work, processed rhizoma polygonati (RP) and other herbal foods are shown to exhibit intrinsic phosphatase-like (PL) activity bounded with the formation of nano-size flower-shaped assembly. Via quantum mechanical calculations, an enzymatic mechanism is proposed. The enzymatic activity may be induced by the interaction between the sugar molecules distributed on the surface of the nanoassemblies and the phosphatase substrate via either a hydroxyl group or the deprotonated hydroxyl group. Meanwhile, the investigation was further extended by processing some fresh herbs and herbal food through a similar protocol, wherein other enzymatic activities (such as protease, and amylase) were observed. The PL activity exhibited by the processed natural herbs was found to be able to effectively inhibit cancer cell growth via phosphatase signaling, possibly by crosstalk with kinase signaling or DNA damage by either directly binding or unwinding of DNA, as evidenced by high-resolution atomic-force microscopy (HR-AFM). In this work, the neologism herbzyme (herb + enzyme) is proposed. This study represents the first case of scientific literature introducing this new term. Besides the well-known pharmacological properties of the natural molecules contained in herbs and herbal food, there exists an enzymatic/co-enzymatic activity attributed to the nanosized assemblies.

A General Method for the Dibromination of Vicinal sp3 C-H Bonds Exploiting Weak Solvent-Substrate Noncovalent Interactions

A general procedure of 1,2-dibromination of vicinal sp³ C-H bonds of arylethanes using N-bromosuccinimide as the bromide reagent without an external initiator has been established. The modulation of the strength of the intermolecular noncovalent interactions between the solvent and arylethane ethanes, quantitatively evaluated via quantum chemical calculations, allows us to circumvent the fact that arylethane ethane cannot be dibrominated through traditional methods. The mechanism was explored by both experiments and quantum chemical calculations, revealing a radical chain with HAA process.

Quantitative characterisation of the ring normal modes. Pyridine as a study case

In the present work, the vibrational normal modes (NM) of pyridine were revisited. Quantum Chemical calculations were performed to help understand the true nature of some ring related vibrational normal modes (RNM) and how they may be correlated with the electronic structure on the ring. The 27 vibrational normal modes were decomposed into the molecular internal coordinates, and the interest was focused on 7 of them, involving the in-plane ring motion. The electronic structure was analysed through frontier Molecular Orbitals (MO), maps of Molecular Electrostatic Potential surfaces (MEPs) and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis in a dynamic manner, wherein, each vibration was scanned. The present investigation is aimed to provide the Reader with a quantitative characterisation of the RNMs of pyridine.

Two Approaches for the Synthesis of Fused Dihydropyridines via a 1,6-Electrocyclic Reaction: Fluorescent Properties and Prospects for Application

Reactions of penta-2,4-dienethioamides with acetylenedicarboxylic acid, methyl and ethyl esters, and methyl propiolate were systematically studied, and a number of new 2,3-dihydro-5H-thiazolo[3,2-a]pyridines (DTPs) and 4H,6H-pyrido[2,1-b][1,3]thiazines (PTZs) were prepared. A possible mechanism for a multistep domino transformation is suggested, and the key step is the 1,6-electrocyclic reaction. An additional alternative method for the synthesis of new heterocyclic systems was achieved. Evidence of the electrocyclic mechanism of a key step was collected from the analysis of the spatial structure of the synthesized bicyclic nonaromatic pyridines by X-ray diffraction and quantum chemical calculations, as well as from the thermodynamic quantities. DTPs exhibited yellow fluorescence in solution and yellow to red emissions in the solid state. Biological investigations demonstrated the ability of DTPs to penetrate living and fixed cells and presumably accumulate in lysosomes.

From Specific γ-CD/[Nb6 Cl12 (H2 O)6 ]2+ Recognition to Biological Activity Tuning

Specific molecular recognition of γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) by the cationic hexanuclear niobium [Nb₆ Cl₁₂ (H₂ O)₆ ]²⁺ cluster complex in aqueous solutions results in a 1:1 supramolecular assembly {[Nb₆ Cl₁₂ (H₂ O)₆ ]@γ-CD}²⁺ . NMR spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and ESI-MS were used to study the interaction between the inorganic cluster and the organic macrocycle. Such molecular association affects the biological activity of [Nb₆ Cl₁₂ (H₂ O)₆ ]²⁺ , decreasing its cytotoxicity despite enhanced cellular uptake. The 1:1 stoichiometry is maintained in solution over a large window of the reagents' ratio, but crystallization by slow evaporation produces a 1:2 host-guest complex [Nb₆ Cl₁₂ (H₂ O)₆ @(γ-CD)₂ ]Cl₂ ⋅20 H₂ O featuring the cluster encapsulated between two molecules of γ-CD. The 1:2 complex was characterized by XRD, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Quantum chemical calculations were performed to model host-guest interaction.

Arene-Ruthenium(II) Complexes Containing 11H-Indeno[1,2-b]quinoxalin-11-one Derivatives and Tryptanthrin-6-oxime: Synthesis, Characterization, Cytotoxicity, and Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Aryl Ketones

A series of novel mono- and binuclear arene-ruthenium(II) complexes [(p-cym)Ru(L)Cl] containing 11H-indeno[1,2-b]quinoxalin-11-one derivatives or tryptanthrin-6-oxime were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, IR, NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and elemental analysis. Theoretical calculations invoking singlet state geometry optimization, solvation effects, and noncovalent interactions were done using density functional theory (DFT). DFT calculations were also applied to evaluate the electronic properties, and time-dependent DFT was applied to clarify experimental UV-vis results. Cytotoxicity for cancerous and noncancerous human cell lines was evaluated with cell viability MTT assay. Complexes demonstrated a moderate cytotoxic effect toward cancerous human cell line PANC-1. The catalytic activity of the complexes was evaluated in transfer hydrogenation of aryl ketones. All complexes exhibited good catalytic activity and functional group tolerance.

Defect induced photoluminescence and triboluminescence in layered CaLaAl3O7

In this work, a layered melilite structure, CaLaAl₃O₇, was synthesized and observed to have obvious luminescence behaviors under the stimuli of ultraviolet light and rubbing, which were called photoluminescence and triboluminescence, respectively. Considering the wide bandgap of CaLaAl₃O₇ and its specific crystal structure, the observed luminescence should be attributed to intrinsic defects. Both the photoluminescence and triboluminescence of CaLaAl₃O₇ show a strong dependence on the synthesis atmosphere, suggesting that they should be related to the oxygen vacancy. It is attractive to find that the triboluminescence of CaLaAl₃O₇ shows a distinct spectral characteristic compared to its photoluminescence. Further computational results suggest that the applied mechanical stimuli on the CaLaAl₃O₇ cell could promote the formation of the vacancies of oxygen and calcium, responsible for the spectral differences.

First-principles study the single-layer transition metal trihalide CrXSe3 (X = Sn, Ge, Si) as monolayer ferromagnetic semiconductor

Layered transition metal trihalides ABX₃ are promising candidate materials for monolayer magnets. In this paper, we investigated single-layer CrXSe₃ (X  =  Sn, Ge, Si) as monolayer ferromagnetic semiconductors (FMS). Firstly, our calculated interlayer binding energies and mechanical properties demonstrate the feasibility of obtaining the free-standing monolayer CrXSe₃ from the layered van der Waals crystal CrXSe₃ via mechanical exfoliating method. Plus, we find that the ferromagnetic (FM) super-exchange interaction dominates over the anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) direct-exchange interactions, making CrSnSe₃ and CrGeSe₃ monolayers FM with the magnetic moments of 6.0 µ _B per unit cell. Particularly, the FM configurations of CrSnSe₃ and CrGeSe₃ monolayers become more stable under the increasing tensile strain, and CrSiSe₃ converts to FM from AFM under biaxial tensile strain larger than 2%. Additionally, the three monolayers CrXSe₃ are all semiconducting with energy band gaps of 0.76, 0.87 and 1.1 eV for X being Sn, Ge and Si, respectively. Our results suggest CrXSe₃ as monolayer FMS hold promising potential in spintronics.

[{AgL}2Mo8O26]n– complexes: a combined experimental and theoretical study

Reactions of [Ru(NO)Cl5]2- with pseudotrilacunary {XW9O33}9- (X = AsIII, SbIII) anions

Reactions of [Ru(NO)Cl₅]^2- with pseudotrivacant B-α-[XW₉O₃₃]^9- (X = As^III, Sb^III) at 160 °C result in the rearrangement of polyoxometalate backbones into {XM₁₈} structures. In the case of arsenic, oxidation of As^III to As^V takes place with the formation of a mixture of plenary and monosubstituted Dawson [As₂W₁₈O₆₂]^6- and [As₂W₁₇Ru(NO)O₆₁]^7- anions, of which the latter was isolated as Me₂NH₂⁺ (DMA-1a and DMA-1b) and Bu₄N⁺ (Bu₄N-1) salts and fully characterized. Both α₁ and α₂ isomers of [As₂W₁₇Ru(NO)O₆₁]^7- were present in the reaction mixture; pure [α₂-As₂W₁₇Ru(NO)O₆₁]^7- was isolated as the Bu₄N⁺ salt. In the case of antimony, [SbW₉O₃₃]^9- is converted into a mixture of [SbW₁₈O₆₀]^9- and [SbW₁₇{Ru(NO)}O₅₉]^10-. The formation of trisubstituted [SbW₁₅{Ru(NO)}₃O₅₇]^12- as a minor byproduct was detected by HPLC-ICP-AES. The monosubstituted [SbW₁₇{Ru(NO)}O₅₉]^10- anion was isolated as DMAH⁺ (DMA-2) and mixed inorganic cation (CsKNa-2) salts and characterized by XRD, HPLC-ICP-AES, EA and TGA techniques. X-ray analysis shows the presence of the {Ru(NO)}-group in the 6-membered ("equatorial") belt of the Sb-free hemisphere. The experimental findings were confirmed and interpreted by means of quantum chemical calculations.

Nuclear MET requires ARF and is inhibited by carbon nanodots through binding to phospho-tyrosine in prostate cancer

Nuclear receptor tyrosine kinases (nRTKs) are aberrantly upregulated in many types of cancers, but the regulation of nRTK remains unclear. We previously showed androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) induces nMET in castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) specimens. Through gene expression microarray profiles reanalysis, we identified that nMET signaling requires ARF for CRPC growth in Pten/Trp53 conditional knockout mouse model. Accordingly, aberrant MET/nMET elevation correlates with ARF in human prostate cancer (PCa) specimens. Mechanistically, ARF elevates nMET through binding to MET cytoplasmic domain to stabilize MET. Furthermore, carbon nanodots resensitize cancer cells to MET inhibitors through DNA damage response. The inhibition of phosphorylation by carbon nanodots was identified through binding to phosphate group of phospho-tyrosine via computational calculation and experimental assay. Thus, nMET is essential to precision therapy of MET inhibitor. Our findings reveal for the first time that targeting nMET axis by carbon nanodots can be a novel avenue for overcoming drug resistance in cancers especially prostate cancer.

Competitive self-assembly driven as a route to control the morphology of poly(tannic acid) assemblies

With an attempt to develop some supermolecular assemblies of a particular structure through a controllable method, the present study developed two distinct assembly patterns for Poly(Tannic Acid) (PTA) by means of adjusting the components and composition of a binary solvent system. The assembly mechanism was explored through the comparison of theoretical calculations and experimental results with respect to how solvent sets affect the nature of intermolecular interactions among oligomers. The results indicate that the morphology of the aggregates of PTA is determined from the nature of the intermolecular interactions among oligomers. While a cuboid shaped aggregate is likely the result of π-π stacking self-assembly, a sphere shaped morphology is formed through intermolecular hydrogen bonding among the oligomers. The results of the present work provide valuable resources to tune the aggregation morphology by quantitatively adjusting the physical properties of the binary solvent.

Fluorescent boron complexes based on new N,O-chelates as promising candidates for flow cytometry

This study presents the synthesis and optical properties of a new class of bright green-yellow fluorescent dyes with potential applications in bioimaging. A facile synthetic route via the chelation of aryl(hetaryl)aminoacryloylthiophene scaffolds with a BF2 fragment is presented. The photophysical properties of the dyes are attributed to the nature and position of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents. Upon coordination to a BF2 fragment, characteristic emission was observed, with λem ranging from 503 to 543 nm and quantum yields of 0.14-0.42. Compared with parent aryl(hetaryl)aminoacryloylthiophenes, a significant red shift in absorption (up to 480 nm in solution) and emission (up to 543 nm in solution and 610 nm in the solid state) and high chemical stability and photostability were observed. The electron-accepting character of the substituents on the terminal aromatic ring or replacing this fragment with pyridine or pyrazine moieties resulted in increased quantum yields. To gain insight into the electronic structures and optical properties, quantum mechanical calculations were performed. The results of (TD-)DFT calculations supported the structural and spectroscopic data and showed the features of electronic distribution in the frontier molecular orbitals and active electrophilic and nucleophilic sites in the compounds investigated. Synthesized BF2 complexes are promising dyes for cell imaging and flow cytometry owing to their ready penetration and accumulation in cells.
