Differences Between Household Income from Surveys and Registers and How These Affect the Poverty Headcount: Evidence from the Austrian SILC

Conditional selection of multifactor evidence for the levels of anaemia among women of reproductive age group

The study aims at ascertaining the conditional selection of key indicators affecting severe, moderate, mild, and no anaemia levels for women of reproductive age in India. The secondary data for levels of anaemia and personal records of individuals collected for India from the 7th phase of District Health Survey program of the United States Agency for International Development data depository. The data was cleaned and summarised using frequency and percentages. Then the variables were tested for association with levels of anaemia using the Chi-square (χ2) test. The multinomial logistic regression model was employed to ascertain the key indicators through a conditional selection of reference categories. Results suggest that severe anaemia was significantly prevalent among women in the reproductive stage, especially among the 15-29 age groups. Secondary and higher education had a negative effect on the severity of severe, moderate, and mild anaemia. The poorest wealth index stratum had higher and more significant severe anaemia, and households with two adults of the opposite sex had a significant negative effect (β = -0.116, OR = 0.89, p < 0.001) on severe anaemia level while having a significant positive effect on moderate and mild anaemia. Rural households were associated negatively and significantly with moderate and mild anaemia, and nuclear household structures had a higher prevalence of severe anaemia. Therefore, these indicators across different levels of anaemia should be considered for a faster rate of reduction at the national level. Despite several initiatives by the public sector, the anaemia level has remained elevated among women of reproductive age. Education, wealth index, age, pregnancy, relationship structure, household structure, and place of residence were found to be key indicators for the level of anaemia. The significant variables will act as a crucial input to formulate cost-effective public interventions and finally encourage the faster reduction of anaemia levels.

Income Source Confusion Using the SILC

We use a unique panel of household survey data-the Austrian version of the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) for 2008-2011-which have been linked to individual administrative records on both state unemployment benefits and earnings. We assess the extent and structure of misreporting across similar benefits and between benefits and earnings. We document that many respondents fail to report participation in one or more of the unemployment programs. Moreover, they inflate earnings for periods when they are unemployed but receiving unemployment compensation. To demonstrate the impact of income source confusion on estimators, we estimate standard Mincer wage equations. Since unemployment is associated with lower education, the reports of unemployment benefits as earnings bias downward the returns to education. Failure to report unemployment benefits also leads to substantial sample bias when selecting on these benefits, as one might in estimating the returns to job training.

Are profiles of social, cultural, and economic capital related to living well with dementia? Longitudinal findings from the IDEAL programme

RATIONALE

Research exploring social, cultural, and economic capital among people with dementia is scarce.

OBJECTIVE

We describe levels of social, cultural, and economic capital in people with dementia at baseline and levels of social and cultural capital 12 and 24 months later. We identify groups of people with dementia having different combinations of capital and explore whether the identified groups differ in personal characteristics at baseline and in quality of life (QoL), satisfaction with life (SwL), and well-being over time.

METHOD

Baseline, 12-months, and 24-months data from 1537 people with dementia (age, mean = 76.4 years; SD = 8.5; Alzheimer's Disease = 55.4%) enrolled in the IDEAL cohort were analyzed. Social (interactions with friends, civic participation, social participation, neighborhood trust, social network), cultural (education, cultural participation) and economic (annual income) capital, QoL, SwL, well-being, and personal characteristics were assessed.

RESULTS

Compared to people their age, people with dementia reported slightly lower frequency of interactions with friends, social networks and social support, civic and cultural participation, education, and annual income. However, social engagement, cultural participation, and annual income are low among British older adults. Latent profile analysis identified four groups that, based on their levels of social, cultural, and economic capital were named socially and economically privileged (18.0% of participants); financially secure (21.0% of participants); low capital (36.9% of participants); and very low capital (24.1% of participants). Latent growth curve models showed that over time QoL, SwL, and well-being remained largely stable for all groups. Compared to the low capital group, the socially and economically privileged and financially secure groups had higher QoL and well-being whereas the group with very low capital had poorer QoL, SwL, and well-being.

CONCLUSIONS

New policies and efforts from the government, philanthropic foundations, the voluntary and primary care sectors are needed to address social, cultural, and economic disadvantage among people with dementia.

Feasibility of the International Wealth Index and the Gapminder tool as instruments to assess household income and estimate catastrophic expenditure: A prospective patient-level cohort study in India

BACKGROUND

Patient income assessment is required to assess healthcare catastrophic expenditure (Sustainable Development Goal) but self-reported income has several biases. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of the International Wealth Index (IWI) and the Gapminder tool as indirect instruments to assess household income.

METHODS

Prospective cohort study of colorectal cancer patients in five tertiary care hospitals in India (Dec 2020-August 2021). Patient self-reported household income was compared to income estimated from the IWI (twelve questions about household goods) and the Gapminder tool (five pictures of household assets). Agreement between instruments was explored with Bland-Altman methods. Cancer care expenditure from the same cohort was used to illustrate the impact of these tools in catastrophic expenditure rates.

RESULTS

From the 226 patients included, 99.5% completed the IWI and the Gapminder tool. Overall, self-reported incomes were lower than the estimated from the IWI and Gapminder tools (median incomes: 17350₹ for self-reported, 37491₹ for IWI and 51520₹ for Gapminder). The IWI showed better agreement with the self-reported income than the Gapminder tool. For both instruments, the agreement was better for low income earning households. Illustrative catastrophic expenditure rates range from 71% to 56% to 43% when using self-reported, IWI and Gapminder incomes respectively.

DISCUSSION

It is feasible to use the IWI and the Gapminder tools to estimate household income although they might overestimate income, with an impact on catastrophic expenditure rates. Further refinement of these tools could enable global monitoring and modelling of catastrophic expenditure from real-world data, at low burden for patients.

Profiles of social, cultural, and economic capital as longitudinal predictors of stress, positive experiences of caring, and depression among spousal carers of people with dementia

OBJECTIVE

We explored (1) social, cultural, and economic capital in spousal carers of people with dementia; (2) profiles of carers with different levels of capital; (3) whether the identified profiles differ in levels of stress and positive experiences of caring, and likelihood of depression over time.

METHODS

Baseline (2014-2016), 12-month, and 24-month follow-up data were analyzed for 984 coresident spousal carers of people with dementia. We assessed social, cultural, and economic capital, stress, positive experiences of caring, depression.

RESULTS

On average, carers reported infrequent social and cultural participation. Most carers were not socially isolated, trusted their neighbours, had education at least to age 16, and had an income aligned with the 2014 UK average. We identified four groups of carers with different levels of capital. Although on average stress was low, depression was infrequent, and positive experiences of caring were moderately frequent, the group of carers with lowest capital was the least stressed and reported the most positive experiences of caring over time. Compared to the two groups with better capital, those with poorer capital were more likely to be depressed over time.

CONCLUSION

Social, cultural, and economic resources may decrease likelihood of depression, but not stress, in carers of people with dementia.

Are the self-employed at a higher poverty risk: Empirical evidence from Serbian SILC data

Self-employment constitutes a significant share of the workforce in Serbia. Due to the equally high poverty as well as self-employment rates in Serbia, this paper aims to examine whether there is any prevalence between the two. Moreover, it also seeks to investigate what detriments exist within self-employment that keep or lead to poverty among self-employed people. The research is based on both longitudinal and cross-sectional SILC data. The main results indicated higher poverty exposure for solo entrepreneurs and those employed in family enterprises. Businesses run by men, low-skilled individuals, and young entrepreneurs are all at a much higher risk of poverty than other entrepreneurs or employees, especially those represented by women and highly educated individuals. The paper provides significant inputs for (1) managing differences within the active population at risk of income poverty and (2) monitoring outcomes of the self-employed, given that more than half of them are involved in the agricultural sector.

Effects of Perceptions of Climate Change and Flood Risk on Coping Behavior: A Case Study of Taipei, Taiwan

Globalization and population growth have put great pressure on the environment over the last few decades, and climate change has increased associated negative effects. Researchers examine the interactions between human and the environment. Among them, the relationship between place attachment and pro-environmental behavior has attracted particular research attention. However, few studies have addressed the relationships among flood risk perceptions, place attachment, and climate change coping behavior in a densely populated urban area. This study examines the effects of perceptions of climate change and flood risk on coping behavioral intention, and determines whether place attachment plays a mediating or moderating role therein in Taipei, the flood-prone capital city of Taiwan. A total of 1208 questionnaires were collected. An analysis of the mediation effects based on a three-level regression model (Phase I) suggested that place attachment is not a mediator. Adjustment of the model and analysis of moderation effects using structural equation modeling (Phase II) suggested no moderation effect. In Phase III, the mediation effect was reexamined, with the replacement of dependent variables (adaptation/mitigation) with high-effort/low-effort coping behaviors, and one dimension of place attachment was replaced with four dimensions thereof (place dependence and place identity, place satisfaction, place affect, place social bonding). The results thus obtained reveal that the paths of place satisfaction exhibit significant mediating effects between attitudes and high-effort coping behavior. Some paths exhibit significant mediating effects between perceptions and low-effort coping behavior through place satisfaction. Another four paths exhibit partial significant mediating effects through place dependence and place identity and place social bonding. These results suggest that affective attachment of people to local places results in a behavioral tendency to protect or improve those places. The main contribution of this study is its support of meta-analyses of the effects of each dimension of place attachment to provide a better understanding of the effects of place attachment on flood risk perception and coping behavior.
