Abstract
Invasive species, including multiple domestic species, can devastate local biodiversity. Domestic cats (Felis catus) can cause declines in select prey species around the world, and multiple methods are employed to monitor cat diet and predatory habits. These methods have not yet been compared against one another in a meta-analytical way, and therefore, the aim here was to evaluate the relative proportions of different taxa reported in the cat diet. We compared 88 studies using a beta regression model conducted on four different taxa, where methodology, location and duration of study were included as variables. Mammals were further divided into rodents, insectivores and medium-sized mammals for a subset of European studies, using Wilcoxon Rank Sum tests to compare methods. Proportions of mammals were lowest, and those of herptiles were highest in studies using collar-mounted cameras. However, greater proportions of birds were recorded in return questionnaires, suggesting detectability bias, as bird remains are easier to detect. Mammal figures were lower in Australasian studies, whereas birds were more frequently reported in Australasia than in other mainland locations, likely reflecting a difference in prey availability. In Europe, insectivores were found to be more frequently returned than eaten, supporting the existing hypothesis that this group is largely unpalatable to cats. Care should be taken when extrapolating data gathered by different methods, as each one fundamentally measures a different aspect of diet. Only six (6.8%) studies here used video cameras and, although a useful monitoring technique, video results showed a different pattern in taxonomic proportions to data gathered using consumed or returned prey. More research using cat cameras in locations of varying faunal composition is necessary, improving the general applicability of video data to cat populations globally. Palatability and detectability of prey appear to influence the data reported, and these aspects should be considered when calculating total predation rates.

Abstract
Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are potent pesticides acting as vitamin K epoxide reductase inhibitors causing haemorrhaging or external bleeding from orifices and/or skin lesions in intoxicated rodents. However, their non-selective mode of action makes them particularly harmful for non-target wildlife, which may be exposed to ARs via ingestion of AR-containing baits (primary exposure), feeding on AR-intoxicated rodents and carrions (secondary exposure), consuming AR-contaminated necrophagous species (tertiary exposure), and exposure to surface waters receiving baited sewer systems and ARs from outdoor-placed traps after heavy rain events. In the present study, we assessed the suitability of hairs as a non-invasive matrix for monitoring the possible exposure of mammals to ARs with a focus on the first-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (FGARs) warfarin, coumatetralyl, and chlorophacinone and the second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum, flocoumafen, and difethialone. The Red fox (n = 24) was selected as the species representing the potentially exposed non-target wildlife in a littoral area of Northern Italy along the Adriatic coast (Cavallino-Treporti municipality). Half (n = 12) of the analysed hair samples were positive for at least one of the targeted ARs, with a higher prevalence of SGARs (n = 11; 46%) compared to FGARs (n = 1; 4%). The most frequently quantified ARs were brodifacoum (25%), difethialone (13%), and flocoumafen (13%), with concentrations ranging from 0.08 ng g-1 (difethialone) to 0.96 ng g-1 (brodifacoum). These data documented that a relevant part of the Red foxes living in the study area were exposed to ARs and, most importantly, provided the first evidence that hair residues can be used as a non-invasive matrix for assessing the possible exposure of mammals to ARs.

Abstract
Generalist species, which exploit a wide range of food resources, are expected to be able to combine available resources as to attain their specific macronutrient ratio (percentage of caloric intake of protein, lipids and carbohydrates). Among mammalian predators, the red fox Vulpes vulpes is a widespread, opportunistic forager: its diet has been largely studied, outlining wide variation according to geographic and climatic factors. We aimed to check if, throughout the species' European range, diets vary widely in macronutrient composition or foxes can combine complementary foods to gain the same nutrient intake. First, we assessed fox's intake target in the framework of nutritional geometry. Secondly, we aimed to highlight the effects of unbalanced diets on fox density, which was assumed as a proxy for Darwinian fitness, as assessed in five areas of the western Italian Alps. Unexpectedly, the target macronutrient ratio of the fox (52.4% protein-, 38.7% lipid- and 8.9% carbohydrate energy) was consistent with that of hypercarnivores, such as wolves and felids, except for carbohydrate intakes in urban and rural habitats. The inverse relation between density and the deviation of observed macronutrient ratios from the intake target suggests that fox capability of surviving in a wide range of habitats may not be exempt from fitness costs and that nutrient availability should be regarded among the biotic factors affecting animal abundance and distribution.

Abstract
Cats are hypercarnivorous, opportunistic animals that have adjusted to anthropogenic environments since the Neolithic period. Through humans, either by direct feeding and/or scavenging on food scraps, the diet of cats has been enriched with animals that they cannot kill themselves (e.g., large mammals, fish). Here, we conducted carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratio analysis to reconstruct the diet of medieval cats and investigate cat-human interactions in two medieval harbor sites (Qalhât, Oman and Siraf, Iran). The analysis included 28 cat individuals and 100 associated marine and terrestrial faunal samples pertaining to > 30 taxa. The isotopic results indicate a high marine protein-based diet for the cats from Qalhât and a mixed marine-terrestrial (C4) diet for the cats from Siraf. Cats at these sites most likely scavenged on both human food scraps and refuse related to fishing activities, with differences in the two sites most likely associated with the availability of marine resources and/or the living conditions of the cats. By shedding light on the dietary habits of cats from two medieval harbors in the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, this study illustrates the potential of stable isotope analysis in reconstructing human-cat interactions in the past.

Abstract
Neonicotinoids (NEOs) and active pharmaceuticals ingredients (API) are contaminants widely diffused worldwide, causing increasing concern for potential adverse effects on wildlife. However, research on these contaminants have focused on target and non-target invertebrates, while information on potential effects in terrestrial mammals is lacking. We performed preliminary non-invasive monitoring of NEOs and API in a suburban and agricultural area using hair of the Red fox. The Red fox is a widely diffused mesopredator in Europe, and its plasticity in feeding habits makes it an excellent indicator for assessing exposure to environmental contamination. We observed the presence of NEOs in many Red fox hair samples (n = 11), including imidacloprid (IMI), acetamiprid (ACE), and clothianidin (CLO). The highest quantified concentrations were 6.4 ng g-1 dry weight (dw), 6.7 ng g-1 dw, and 0.9 ng g-1 dw for IMI, ACE, and CLO, respectively. The targeted APIs included non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and antidepressants. APIs were less frequently detected than NEOs, and the compounds with the highest prevalence were the NSAID ketoprofen (36%), the antidepressant sertraline (36%), and its active metabolite norsertraline (27%). The presence of human pharmaceuticals such as the NSAID ibuprofen and the antidepressants sertraline, fluoxetine, and their active metabolites norsertraline and norfluoxetine suggest environmental contamination due to untreated and partially treated wastewater discharged in surface waters and soils of the study area. The detection and quantification of ketoprofen and flunixin also suggest the possible use of contaminated manure on farmland. Findings indicate that hair may be used for monitoring environmental exposure to NEOs and provide evidence that hair is a good marker of exposure for antidepressants and certain NSAIDs, including ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and flunixin.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal nematodes and protozoa and other parasite occurrences were evaluated in free-ranging wolf (Canis lupus italicus) and red fox (Vulpes vulpes) populations from natural and anthropized areas of Central Italy. Analyzed fecal samples were collected from 60 foxes and 40 wolves in the anthropized areas, and 41 foxes and 39 wolves in the natural areas. In foxes, hookworm infections (p < 0.0001) were more frequently recorded in the anthropized environment, while coccidia (p < 0.05) and Cryptosporidium spp. (p < 0.0001) were more frequent in the natural area. In wolves, a higher frequency of hookworms (p < 0.0001) was observed in natural areas, while coccidia were more common in the anthropized area (p < 0.05). Moreover, in the natural environment, trichuroid nematodes (p < 0.0001) were significantly more frequent in wolves than in foxes, while Cryptosporidium (p < 0.001) and Giardia duodenalis (p < 0.001) were more common in foxes. In the anthropic area, the occurrence of hookworms was found to be significantly higher in foxes (p < 0.0001), while trichuroid nematodes were more common in wolves (p < 0.0001). The obtained data are indicative of a different diffusion of specific parasite taxa in wolves and foxes living in the natural and/or anthropized environments examined herein.

Abstract
The domestic cat, Felis catus, is one of the most popular and widespread domestic animals. Because domestic cats can reach high population densities and retain at least some tendency to hunt, their overall impact on wildlife can be severe. Domestic cats have highly variable predation rates depending on the availability of prey in their environment, their owners' practices, and individual cat characteristics. Among these characteristics, cat personality has recently been hypothesized to be an important factor contributing to variations in the hunting activity of cats. In this study, we surveyed 2508 cat owners living in France about their cats' personalities, using the Feline Five personality framework, and the frequency with which cats bring home prey. Personality traits were analyzed using factor analysis and related to predation frequency using cumulative logit models. For both birds and small mammals, cats with high levels of extraversion or low levels of neuroticism had significantly higher frequencies of prey return. Owners whose cats had low levels of agreeableness or high levels of dominance reported a significantly lower frequency of bird return. Personality differences therefore seem to contribute to the high variability in predation rates among domestic cats. We also found that the owner-reported prey return frequencies were significantly higher for cats spending more time outdoors, for non-pedigree cats, and for owners living in rural or suburban areas as opposed to urban areas. By contrast, we did not detect an effect of cat sex or age on their reported prey return rates.

Abstract
The domestic cat is the world's most popular pet and one of the most detrimental predators in terrestrial ecosystems. Effective protection of wildlife biodiversity demands detailed tracking of cat trophic ecology, and stable isotopes serve as a powerful proxy in dietary studies. However, a variable diet can make an isotopic pattern unreadable in opportunistic predators. To evaluate the usefulness of the isotopic method in cat ecology, we measured C and N isotope ratios in hundreds of archaeological cat bones. We determined trends in cat trophic paleoecology in northern Europe by exploiting population-scale patterns in animals from diverse locations. Our dataset shows a high variability of isotopic signals related to the socio-economic and/or geomorphological context. This points toward regularities in isotopic patterns across past cat populations. We provide a generalized guide to interpret the isotopic ecology of cats, emphasizing that regional isotopic baselines have a major impact on the isotopic signal.
