Contamination of organochlorine pesticides in water and sediments from a waterbird-inhabited lake, East Central China

Sediment-water exchange and risk assessment of pesticidal persistent organic pollutants in Bharathappuzha and Periyar Riverine region along the Arabian Sea

Considering the extensive agricultural practices along the perennial rivers, viz. Periyar and Bharathappuzha of Kerala in the southwest coast of India, the first comprehensive surveillance of new and legacy organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in surface sediment was conducted. Further, the sediment-water exchange fluxes have been elucidated. Mean concentrations of total HCH, DDT and endosulfan were 0.84 ng/g, 0.42 ng/g and 0.30 ng/g for Bharathappuzha Riverine sediment (BRS) and 1.08 ng/g, 0.39 ng/g and 0.35 ng/g for Periyar Riverine sediment (PRS). The dominance α-HCH and β-HCH isomers in PRS and BRS reflect the ongoing use of technical HCH in Kerala. The calculated KSW in both rivers was very low in comparison with other Indian rivers. The average log K'OC for all the detected OCPs in both the rivers was lower than the predicted log KOC in equilibrium indicating the higher adherence of OCPs to sediment. Furthermore, fugacity fraction (fs/fw) was < 1.0 for all OCPs confirming the net deposition of OCPs into the sediment. Sediment concentrations for each of the OCPs in PRS and BRS did not surpass the threshold effect level and probable effect level as stipulated by the Canadian Council of Ministry of the Environment Guidelines. In addition, all the sites of both rivers had sediment quality guideline quotient (SQGQ) values below 0.1 indicating the absence of significant biological and ecological risks.

Sediment-water partitioning and risk assessment of organochlorine pesticides along the urban, peri-urban and rural transects of Krishna River Basin, Peninsular India

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were widely used in the past for pest control in agricultural lands and vector control programs in India. Due to their persistence and toxic impacts, we have quantified twenty OCPs in surface water, groundwater, and surface sediment samples along the Krishna River Basin (KRB), flowing through Peninsular India. Samples were collected along the urban, peri-urban, and rural transects of the KRB to understand the relation between the occurrence of pesticidal organochlorine pollutants based on the land use and land cover (LULC) and asses potential risk. Diagnostic ratios revealed ongoing Lindane usage in rural and peri-urban transects. On the contrary, the urban transect of the Musi River (MR) showed fresh inputs of technical HCH. The ratios of (p,p'-DDE+ p,p'-DDD)/ΣDDT >0.5 and α/β-Endosulfan < 2.33 for most of the sites across the three transects for surface water, groundwater, and sediment indicate past DDT and Endosulfan usage across KRB. Excluding p,p'-DDE, and heptachlor in most of the sites, the logK_OC' was higher than logK_OC for other OCPs in the urban transect. However, for all the OCPs, the logK_OC' was lower than logK_OC in the peri-urban and rural transects of KRB thereby indicating that riverine sediment is acting as a sink for OCPs. The Krishna River annually transport about 0.24 tons HCH, 0.11 tons of DDT and 0.1 tons of Endosulfan. Despite having low water discharge, the compound-specific fluxes of the Wyra river are higher than the other two tributaries. Ecotoxicological risk assessment based on the Hazard Quotient suggested DDT pose higher risks to scud (zooplankton) and dinoflagellate and diatom (phytoplankton) whereas Endosulfan poses a threat to Bluegill (fish).

Organochlorines in the riverine ecosystem of Punjab province, Pakistan: contamination status, seasonal variation, source apportionment, and ecological risk assessment

The aim of the present study was to determine the occurrence, spatio-temporal variations, source apportioning, and ecological risk assessment of selected PCBs and OCPs in surface water and sediments collected riverine environment of Punjab province, Pakistan. The concentration of ΣOCPs (water: 64-455 ng/L; sediments: 117-616 ng/g) and ΣPCBs (water: 2-132 ng/L; sediments: 3.27-200 ng/g) was found comparatively higher than the levels reported from other parts of the world. The higher concentrations of DDTs and HCHs were detected in both studied matrices, whereas among PCBs, CB-28, 49 and CB-37, 82 were dominant in water and sediments, respectively. The isomeric ratios including α-HCH/γ-HCH, (DDE + DDD) / DDTs, and α /β-endosulfan reflected the recent use of lindane, technical DDT, and endosulfan in the study area. The WHO-TEQ values of DL-PCBs ranged from 3.6 × 10^-6 to 0.115 ng/L and 8.7 × 10^-6 to 0.157 ng/g in surface water and sediments in both seasons, respectively. The spatial variation analysis revealed that the sites in the industrial and agricultural zones were highly contaminated. The OCPs and PCBs fluxes to downstream areas were estimated to be 12.4 tons/year and 1.9 tons/year, respectively. The significant ecological risks were estimated to be posed by OCPs and PCBs, as their levels in 67% and 62% of surface water and sediment samples were exceeding the threshold limits, highlighting effects to ecological integrities.

Occurrence, spatial distribution, source, and ecological risk assessment of organochlorine pesticides in Dongting Lake, China

The occurrence, distribution, sources, and ecological risks of organochlorine pesticides in Dongting Lake of China were investigated. The average concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in 22 surface water samples and 14 sediment samples were 90.07 ng/L and 80.65 ng/g dw, respectively. Sixteen types of OCPs, dominated by HCHs, DDTs and heptachlor, were detected in the Dongting Lake. The relationships of OCP residues between Dongting Lake and its tributary rivers have been discussed and the hydraulic connections with the Yangtze River and the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) were also considered. Results showed that the shortage of runoff, earlier dry season, and reduction of sediment deposition extremely deteriorated the hydraulic conditions, magnified the water cycle, and restrained the self-purification of OCPs. The ∑OCPs in surface water were concentrated in the inlets of Yangtze River, Lishui River, Zishui River, Yuanshui River, and Xiangjiang River. Moreover, the ∑OCPs in the outlet of the Yangtze River also maintained a high level, indicating that OCPs posed adverse effects on the Yangtze River. Risk assessments of OCPs in the surface water of Dongting Lake were estimated according to available water quality guidelines and health risk assessment models. The results indicated that OCPs in the surface water of Dongting Lake were safe for aquatic organisms and human health. In addition, sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) were also applied to evaluate the potential ecotoxicological risks of OCPs in sediments. The results presented that contaminants of γ-HCH; o,p'-DDD; and dieldrin in sediment had adverse effects on benthic organisms, indicating that fundamental solutions should be proposed to control OCP contamination in Dongting Lake.

Occurrence and risk assessment of emerging contaminants in a water reclamation and ecological reuse project

Water reclamation and ecological reuse is gradually becoming a popular solution to address the high pollutant loads and insufficient ecological flow of many urban rivers. However, emerging contaminants in water reuse system and associated human health and ecological risks need to be assessed. This study determined the occurrence and human health and ecological risk assessments of 35 emerging contaminants during one year, including 5 types of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), 5 pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), 7 endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and 18 disinfection by-products (DBPs), in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and receiving rivers, as well as an unimpacted river for comparison. Results showed that most of PPCPs and EDCs, especially antibiotics, triclosan, estrogens and bisphenol A, occurred frequently at relatively high concentrations, and they were removed from 20.5% to 88.7% with a mean of 58.9% via WWTP. The highest potential noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks in different reuse scenarios were assessed using maximal detected concentrations, all below the acceptable risk limits, with the highest total combined risk value of 9.21 × 10^-9 and 9.98 × 10^-7, respectively. Ecological risk assessment was conducted using risk quotient (RQ) method and indicated that several PPCPs, EDCs and haloacetonitriles (HANs) pose high risk (RQ > 1) to aquatic ecology in the rivers, with the highest RQ up to 83.8. The study suggested that ecological risks need to be urgently addressed by updating and optimizing the process in WWTPs to strengthen the removal efficiencies of emerging contaminants. The study can serve as a reference for safer water reuse in the future, while further studies could be conducted on the health risk of specific groups of people, exposure parameters in water reuse, as well as more emerging contaminants.

Yellow-legged gull eggs (Larus michahellis) as persistent organic pollutants and trace metal bioindicator for two nearby areas with different human impact

The concentration of different persistent organic pollutants (POPs including chlorinated and brominated compounds) and trace metals and metalloids (As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, Hg, Ni, and Zn) was examined in eggs from two colonies of yellow-legged gulls. The two colonies are established in Ría de Vigo, Northwest Spain, with a distance between them of only 10 km, one in Vigo town (industrial and harbour activities) and the other in the Cíes Islands in a Natural Park and Marine Protected Area -MPA- (with no known anthropogenic inputs). Statistically significant differences for the two colonies were observed for Hg, the sum of 7 CBs, the sum of DDTs y and the sum of 9 PBDEs, with values that could be causing some toxic effects in the area of the most anthropogenically influenced colony. The estimated isotopic niche was also calculated, based on δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C, for the two colonies, pointing to a wider diet in the Cíes colony when compared to the diet in the Vigo colony. The study supports the use of the yellow-legged seagull eggs as a bioindicator of pollution capable of differentiating pollution level even in geographically close areas.

Spatial distribution and sources of pesticidal persistent organic pollutants in the Hooghly riverine sediment

Given the extensive indiscriminate usage in the past and limited ongoing use, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been widely reported in the Hooghly riverine environment. Hence, surface riverine sediment samples were collected along the urban and suburban transects of the Hooghly River and OCPs were quantified in gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Mean concentration of HCH, DDT, and endosulfan was 5 ng g^-1, 10 ng g^-1, and 4 ng g^-1 respectively. DDT was dominant among all the OCPs and contributed nearly 40% to the total OCPs possibly due to the ongoing use of DDT for vector control programs. Diagnostic ratios suggest recent source of lindane, DDT, and endosulfan. Using OCP concentration from previously published data in surface water during the same time frame, sediment-water partitioning of OCPs was estimated. Excluding α-HCH and γ-HCH in few pockets, majority of the OCPs tend to partition more on to sediment. Comparing the sediment concentration with the sediment quality guideline values, risk on ecological integrities was indicated due to DDT and HCH contamination. Suburban sites indicated higher risk than urban sites according to the calculated sediment quality guideline quotient (SQGQ). A brief review on the approach to pesticidal POP pollution management in India revealed that older management approaches should be replaced with a unique, integrated, and holistic system.

Determination of Occurrences, Distribution, Health Impacts of Organochlorine Pesticides in Soils of Central China

Organochlorine pesticides are groups of chemicals applied to prevent pest and insect infestation. This study was aimed at investigating the concentration, potential sources, cancer risk and ecological toxicity of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in Huangpi district, Wuhan, China. Eight OCPs in soil samples collected from four land-use types at depths of 0–10 and 10–20 cm were examined. Sample extraction was carried out by solid phase matrix extraction method and analyzed using Agilent gas chromatograph 7890B equipped with electron capture detectors (ECD). The total concentration of OCPs ranged from 0.00–32.7 ng g⁻¹ in the surface and 0.01–100.45 ng g⁻¹ in the subsurface soil layer. Beta hexachlorocyclohexanes (β-HCH) with 2.20 and 7.71 ng g⁻¹ in the surface and subsurface soil layers, respectively, was the dominant compound. The mean concentrations of OCPs in all samples were less than the threshold values for hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTs) in China soil. Concentration of OCPs in the four land-use types were in the order of: paddy field > barren land > farmland > plastic greenhouse. Results of composition analysis revealed recent application of lindane as a major and historical use of new technical HCHs as a minor source of HCHs. On the other hand, application of new technical p,p’-DDT is the main source of DDTs in the study area. The estimated lifetime average daily dose, incremental lifetime cancer risks and hazard quotient values revealed that there is less likelihood of carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic health risks on the local residents.

Risk assessment of an organochlorine pesticide mixture in the surface waters of Qingshitan Reservoir in Southwest China

Risk assessment of single pollutants has been extensively studied. However, the co-exposure of pollutants in a real environment may pose a greater risk than single chemicals. In this study, concentration addition-based risk quotients were applied to the risk assessment of the 15 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) mixtures (α-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), β-HCH, γ-HCH, δ-HCH, heptachlor, aldrin, heptachlor epoxide, chlordane, α-endosulfan, p,p′-dichloro-diphenyl-dichloroethylene, endrin, β-endosulfan, p,p′-dichloro-diphenyl-dichloroethane, p,p′-dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane, and methoxychlor) detected in the surface water (reservoirs, ponds, and streams) of Qingshitan Reservoir in Southwest China from 2014 to 2016 by summing up the toxic units (RQ_STU) of the toxicity data from the individual chemicals. The RQ_STU of the OCPs mixture exceeded 1 in 45.23% of the 283 surface water samples based on acute data and an assessment factor of 100, indicating a potential risk for the aquatic environment (fish). Methoxychlor and γ-HCH contributed the most toxicities in the pesticide mixtures toward Daphnia and fish and provided at least 50% of the mixture toxicity in all samples with RQ_STU larger than 1. The most sensitive organism to realistic OCPs mixtures in the surface waters of Qingshitan Reservoir was fish, followed by Daphnia and algae. The values of the maximum cumulative ratio for all samples indicated that the risk assessment based on single chemicals underestimated the pesticide mixture toxicities, which shows that special consideration should be made for the ecological risk of pesticide mixtures in the aquatic environment.

Residues of organochlorine pesticides in surface water of a megacity in central China: seasonal-spatial distribution and fate in Wuhan

Surface water quality closely correlating with human health suffered increasing organochlorine pesticide (OCP) pollution due to the intensive anthropogenic activities in megacities. In the present study, 112 water samples collected from 14 lakes and 11 drinking water source sites in Wuhan were detected for the residues of OCPs in November 2013 and July 2014, respectively. The ΣOCPs ranged from 5.61 to 13.62 ng L^-1 in summer with the maximum value in Yezhi Lake and 3.18 to 7.73 ng L^-1 in winter with the highest concentration in Yandong Lake. Except dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), OCP concentrations in summer were significantly higher than those in winter mostly due to the non-point source pollution including land runoff in summer. Source apportionment of hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and DDTs revealed the historical use of technical HCH and lindane and the new input of DDT, respectively. The spatial distribution of OCPs was not uniform in the surface water of Wuhan because of the significant influence of land development and fishery. The risk assessments showed the heptachlor, and heptachlor epoxide in most sampling sites exceeded the threshold set by the European Union, indicating the possible adverse effects for aquatic lives. Negligible non-carcinogenic risks for drinking and bathing as well as carcinogenic risks for bathing were found in the surface water. However, the total carcinogenic risks of all OCPs (∑Rs) caused by drinking in summer were higher than the safe level of 10^-7 in all sampling sites. It was implied that the surface water in Wuhan was not safe for directly drinking without effective purification.

Insecticides in sediment cores from a rural and a suburban area in South China: A reflection of shift in application patterns

A shift in pesticide application pattern has occurred in recent decades, yet little information is available in the consequence of this shift. To better understand how the shift is reflected in aquatic environment, two sediment cores were collected from a rural (RLY) and a suburban (SGZ) river in South China. A variety of legacy organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and current-use pesticides (CUPs), including organophosphate, pyrethroid and phenylpyrazole insecticides were quantified at distinct increments of the sediment cores. Total insecticide concentrations were in the ranges of 67.6-1671 and 99.2-231ng/g dry weight in RLY and SGZ with pyrethroids and organochlorines being the dominant components, respectively. In general, the shifting profile of sediment-bound insecticides from legacy OCPs to CUPs over time followed their historical application pattern, but significant differences were noted between the temporal profiles of the rural and suburban cores in regards to concentrations and composition of insecticides. The observed difference between the suburban and rural cores was synchronous with land use pattern and local economic changes. A steep increased occurrence of CUPs in the 1990s was observed in the RLY core, which is consistent with the onset of economic growth in this area. In contrast, the suburban SGZ area has been historically contaminated by legacy OCPs, with fresh input of OCPs in SGZ believed to be caused by soil erosion, caused by land reclamation activities associated with urban expansion. The current study shows the shift in insecticide application pattern from legacy OCPs to CUPs leading to an elevated CUP occurrence in the environment. It also suggests a stronger need for understanding not only environmental fate and risk, but also how their use pattern and land use changes impact the occurrence of pesticides.
