Abstract
Swine wastewater (SW) application introduces antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) into farmland soils. However, ARG attenuation in SW-fertigated soils, especially those influenced by staple crops and soil type, remains unclear. This study investigated twelve soil ARGs and one mobile genetic element (MGE) in sandy loam, loam, and silt loam soils before and after SW application in wheat-planted and unplanted soils. The results revealed an immediate increase in the abundance of ARGs in soil by two orders of magnitude above background levels following SW application. After SW application, the soil total ARG abundance was attenuated, reaching background levels at 54 days; However, more individual ARGs were detected above the detection limit than pre-application. Among the 13 genes, acc(6')-lb, tetM, and tetO tended to persist in the soil during wheat harvest. ARG half-lives were up to four times longer in wheat-planted soils than in bare soils. Wheat planting decreased the persistence of acc(6')-lb, ermB, ermF, and intI2 but increased the persistence of others such as sul1 and sul2. Soil type had no significant impact on ARG and MGE fates. Our findings emphasize the need for strategic SW application and the consideration of crop cultivation effects to mitigate ARG accumulation in farmland soils.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance is a global public health concern. Antibiotic usage in pigs makes swine wastewater (SW) a reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). SW is usually stored and treated in a three-chamber anaerobic pond (3-CAP) in medium and small pig farms in northern China. However, the yet unexplored presence of ARGs in SW during 3-CAP treatment may result in ARGs spreading into the environment if farmers apply SW to farmland as a liquid organic fertilizer. This study investigated the profiles of and changes in ARGs in SW during its treatment in 3-CAP over four seasons and analyzed the correlation between ARGs and bacterial phenotypes, along with the physicochemical parameters of the water. The results revealed that ARG abundance decreased considerably after 3-CAP treatment in April (47%), October (47%), and December (62%) but increased in May (43%) and August (73%). The ARG copies in the influent and other SW samples increased significantly from 107 copies/mL in April to 109 copies/mL in October and were maintained in December. The increase in ARG abundance was not as rapid as the growth of the bacterial population, resulting in lower relative abundance in October and December. Bacterial communities possessed more sul1 and tetM genes, which were also positively correlated with mobile genetic elements. After the 3-CAP treatment, 16% of antibiotics and 60% of heavy metals were removed, and both had a weak correlation with ARGs. Predicted phenotypes showed that gram-positive (G+) and gram-negative (G-) bacteria have different capacities for carrying ARGs. G+ bacteria carry more ARGs than G- bacteria. This study revealed the persistence of ARGs in SW after 3-CAP treatment over different seasons. Applying SW in the proper month will mitigate ARG dissemination to the environment.

Abstract
Colistin has been extensively used since the middle of the last century in animals, particularly in swine, for the control of enteric infections. Colistin is presently considered the last line of defense against human infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative organisms such as carbapenemase-producer Enterobacterales, Acinetobacter baumanni, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Transferable bacterial resistance like mcr-genes was reported in isolates from both humans and animals. Researchers actively seek strategies to reduce colistin resistance. The definition of guidelines for colistin therapy in veterinary and human medicine is thus crucial. The ban of colistin use in swine as a growth promoter and for prophylactic purposes, and the implementation of sustainable measures in farm animals for the prevention of infections, would help to avoid resistance and should be encouraged. Colistin resistance in the human-animal-environment interface stresses the relevance of the One Health approach to achieve its effective control. Such measures should be addressed in a cooperative way, with efforts from multiple disciplines and with consensus among doctors, veterinary surgeons, and environment professionals. A revision of the mechanism of colistin action, resistance, animal and human use, as well as colistin susceptibility evaluation is debated here.

Abstract
Optimization of antimicrobial use in swine management systems requires full understanding of antimicrobial-induced changes on the developmental dynamics of gut microbiota and the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impacts of early life antimicrobial intervention on fecal microbiota development, and prevalence of selected ARGs (ermB, tetO, tetW, tetC, sulI, sulII, and blaCTX–M) in neonatal piglets. A total of 48 litters were randomly allocated into one of six treatment groups soon after birth. Treatments were as follows: control (CONT), ceftiofur crystalline free acid (CCFA), ceftiofur hydrochloride (CHC), oxytetracycline (OTC), procaine penicillin G (PPG), and tulathromycin (TUL). Fecal swabs were collected from piglets at days 0 (prior to treatment), 5, 10, 15, and 20 post treatment. Sequencing analysis of the V3-V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene and selected ARGs were performed using the Illumina Miseq platform. Our results showed that, while early life antimicrobial prophylaxis had no effect on individual weight gain, or mortality, it was associated with minor shifts in the composition of fecal microbiota and noticeable changes in the abundance of selected ARGs. Unifrac distance metrics revealed that the microbial communities of the piglets that received different treatments (CCFA, CHC, OTC, PPG, and TUL) did not cluster distinctly from CONT piglets. Compared to CONT group, PPG-treated piglets exhibited a significant increase in the relative abundance of ermB and tetW at day 20 of life. Tulathromycin treatment also resulted in a significant increase in the abundance of tetW at days 10 and 20, and ermB at day 20. Collectively, these results demonstrate that the shifts in fecal microbiota structure caused by perinatal antimicrobial intervention are modest and limited to particular groups of microbial taxa. However, early life PPG and TUL intervention could promote the selection of ARGs in herds. While additional investigations are required to explore the consistency of these findings across larger populations, these results could open the door to new perspectives on the utility of early life antimicrobial administration to healthy neonates in swine management systems.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the effects of Macleaya cordata extracts (Chinese herbal medicine extracts) and antibiotics combination with chlortetracycline (CTC) on the antibiotic resistance genes in fecal microorganism. Compared with the group without antibiotics, the relative abundances of all six tetracycline resistance genes were increased after 75 mg kg−1 CTC supplementation. Interestingly, M. cordata extracts in feed suppressed the increase of a part of tetracycline resistance genes in fecal microorganism of weaned pigs.

Abstract
To characterize the effects of several subtherapeutic antibiotic combinations on the abundance and diversity of fecal microbes, 400 weaned pigs were selected and randomly assigned to 8 groups, where they were continuously fed different antibiotic combinations for 28 days. Then, a total of 48 pigs were randomly selected to collect feces samples for DNA extraction and 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. Compared with that of pigs without antibiotic administration, the diversities of fecal microbes were decreased in the pigs fed chlortetracycline (CTC), olaquindox (OLA), and either enramycin (ER) or virginiamycin (VIR), and the relative abundances of members of the phylum Bacteroidetes and the genus Prevotella were increased. Compared with that of pigs without antibiotic administration, the relative abundances of members of the phylum Proteobacteria and the genus Succinivibrio were decreased in the pigs fed CTC, a mixture of zinc bacitracin (ZB) + colistin sulfate (COL), a mixture of CTC+ZB+COL, a mixture of CTC+OLA, or a mixture of CTC+OLA+ER. α-Diversity and β-diversity were decreased (P < 0.05) in the pigs fed ZB+COL or a mixture of CTC+OLA+ER or CTC+OLA+VIR. This study provides experimental data to deepen our understanding on the effects of antibiotic combinations on intestinal microbes.

Abstract
Colistin (Polymyxin E) is one of the few cationic antimicrobial peptides commercialized in both human and veterinary medicine. For several years now, colistin has been considered the last line of defense against infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative such as Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Colistin has been extensively used orally since the 1960s in food animals and particularly in swine for the control of Enterobacteriaceae infections. However, with the recent discovery of plasmid-mediated colistin resistance encoded by the mcr-1 gene and the higher prevalence of samples harboring this gene in animal isolates compared to other origins, livestock has been singled out as the principal reservoir for colistin resistance amplification and spread. Co-localization of the mcr-1 gene and Extended-Spectrum-β-Lactamase genes on a unique plasmid has been also identified in many isolates from animal origin. The use of colistin in pigs as a growth promoter and for prophylaxis purposes should be banned, and the implantation of sustainable measures in pig farms for microbial infection prevention should be actively encouraged and financed. The scientific research should be encouraged in swine medicine to generate data helping to reduce the exacerbation of colistin resistance in pigs and in manure. The establishment of guidelines ensuring a judicious therapeutic use of colistin in pigs, in countries where this drug is approved, is of crucial importance. The implementation of a microbiological withdrawal period that could reduce the potential contamination of consumers with colistin resistant bacteria of porcine origin should be encouraged. Moreover, the management of colistin resistance at the human-pig-environment interface requires the urgent use of the One Health approach for effective control and prevention. This approach needs the collaborative effort of multiple disciplines and close cooperation between physicians, veterinarians, and other scientific health and environmental professionals. This review is an update on the chemistry of colistin, its applications and antibacterial mechanism of action, and on Enterobacteriaceae resistance to colistin in pigs. We also detail and discuss the One Health approach and propose guidelines for colistin resistance management.
