Heavy metal accumulation and distribution in Phragmites australis seedlings tissues originating from natural and urban catchment

The root-associated Fusarium isolated based on fungal community analysis improves phytoremediation efficiency of Ricinus communis L. in multi metal-contaminated soils

Phytoremediation is a widely accepted bioremediation method of treating heavy metal contaminated soils. Nevertheless, the remediation efficiency in multi-metal contaminated soils is still unsatisfactory attributable to susceptibility to different metals. To isolate root-associated fungi for improving phytoremediation efficiency in multi-metal contaminated soils, the fungal flora in root endosphere, rhizoplane, rhizosphere of Ricinus communis L. in heavy metal contaminated soils and non-heavy metal contaminated soils were compared by ITS amplicon sequencing, and then the critical fungal strains were isolated and inoculated into host plants to improve phytoremediation efficiency in Cd, Pb, and Zn-contaminated soils. The fungal ITS amplicon sequencing analysis indicated that the fungal community in root endosphere was more susceptible to heavy metals than those in rhizoplane and rhizosphere soils and Fusarium dominated the endophytic fungal community of R. communis L. roots under heavy metal stress. Three endophytic strains (Fusarium sp. F2, Fusarium sp. F8, and Fusarium sp. F14) isolated from Ricinus communis L. roots showed high resistances to multi-metals and possessed growth-promoting characteristics. Biomass and metal extraction amount of R. communis L. with Fusarium sp. F2, Fusarium sp. F8, and Fusarium sp. F14 inoculation in Cd-, Pb- and Zn-contaminated soils were significantly higher than those without the inoculation. The results suggested that fungal community analysis-guided isolation could be employed to obtain desired root-associated fungi for enhancing phytoremediation of multi-metal contaminated soils.

Cadmium accumulation by Phragmites australis and Iris pseudacorus from stormwater in floating treatment wetlands microcosms: Insights into plant tolerance and utility for phytoremediation

Environmentally sustainable remediation is needed to protect freshwater resources which are deteriorating due to severe industrial, mining, and agricultural activities. Treatment by floating wetlands could be a sustainable solution to remediate water bodies. The study aimed to examine the effects of Cd on Phragmites australis and Iris pseudacorus growth (height, biomass, root length and chlorophyll contents), anatomy, Cd accumulation in their biomass and their ability to remove Cd, N and P. Seedlings of both plants were grown in a greenhouse for 50 days in artificially prepared stormwater amended with Cd, N, and P. The treatments were: control (Cd _0), Cd_1, Cd_2, and Cd_4 mg L^-1. N and P contents were 4 mg L^-1 and 1.8 mg L^-1, respectively. In the case of P. australis, the maximum plant height, root length, and total dry biomass production was increased in medium dose (Cd_2) treatment while the chlorophyll index (CCI) increased in high dose (Cd_4) treatment as compared to all treatments. For I. pseudacorus, the maximum plant height and total dry biomass production, root length and CCI values were improved in low dose (Cd_1) and high dose (Cd_4) treatments, respectively among all treatments. Results showed that P. australis accumulated 10.94-1821.59 μg · (0.05 m²)^-1 in roots and 2.45-334.65 μg · (0.05 m²)^-1 in shoots under Cd_0, Cd_1 and Cd_4 treatments. I. pseudacorus accumulated the highest Cd in roots up to 5.84-4900 μg · (0.05 m²)^-1 and 3.40-609 μg · (0.05 m²)^-1 in shoots under Cd_0, Cd_1 and Cd_4 treatments. The translocation factor was observed as <1 and the bioconcentration factor >1 for both species, which indicates their phytostabilization potential. Results demonstrate that P. australis and I. pseudacorus are suitable for use in floating wetlands to remediate contaminated sites.

Computer-Aided Greenery Design-Prototype Green Structure Improving Human Health in Urban Ecosystem

Increasing population and urbanization, with climate change consequences, such as rising temperatures, influence public health and well-being. The search to improve the quality of life in cities becomes one of the priority objectives. A solution can be found in the role of greenery in an urban environment and its impact on human health. This opens a path toward experimentation on microclimate green structures that can be inserted into dense urban spaces providing human and environmental benefits. The article proposes an automated greenery design method combined with rapid prototyping for such interventions. A theoretical analysis of the problem preceded the introduction of the method. The research process was developed in accordance with the main objectives of the CDIO framework (Conceive, Design, Implement, and Operate) with the SiL (Software in the Loop) and HiL (Hardware in the Loop) methods. Moreover, the applied test model allows for complex evaluation in order to ensure quality and directions for further development.

Enhanced removal of heavy metals and metalloids by constructed wetlands: A review of approaches and mechanisms

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are increasingly employed to remediate heavy metal and metalloid (HMM)-polluted water. However, the disadvantages of HMM removal by conventional CWs (without enhancement), such as an unstable and unpredictable removal efficiency, hinder the reliability of this technology. The objective of this study was to review research on enhanced CWs for HMM removal. In particular, we performed a bibliometric analysis to evaluate research trends, critical literature, and keyword evolution in recent years. Subsequently, we reviewed various enhanced approaches for the application of CWs for the removal of HMMs, including the use of improved substrates, aquatic macrophytes, microorganisms, bioelectrochemical coupling systems, hybrid CW, external additives, and operation parameters. Furthermore, the main mechanisms underlying HMM removal by these approaches are summarized. Our review clearly reveals that research on the remediation of HMM-polluted water via CW technology is receiving increased attention, with no apparent trends in topics. The selection of appropriate enhanced approaches or operation parameters as well as methodological improvements should be based on the dominant environmental conditions of the CW column and removal mechanisms for the targeted HMMs. Based on the established literature, several suggestions are proposed to guide the optimization of the design and operation of efficient CWs for the treatment of HMM-polluted water.

The Importance of Biological and Ecological Properties of Phragmites Australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex Steud., in Phytoremendiation of Aquatic Ecosystems—The Review

Phragmites australis (common reed) is one of the most extensively distributed species of emergent plant worldwide. The adaptive features of this plant show its competitive character. Owing to high intraspecific diversity of common reed, as well as its phenotypic plasticity, the plant shows a broad ecological amplitude. Moreover, the plant exhibits a high capacity for acclimatization to environmental conditions which are considered adverse. This plant has been used for many years in phytoremediation to purify various types of wastewater. Phragmites australis has a high ability to accumulate various nutrients, heavy metals, and micropollutants, and in this respect, it is superior to other aquatic plants. This review examines the existing literature on the biological and ecological properties of common reed, the use of common reed in wastewater treatment for removing pollutants and tolerance for metals, and in hydrophyte treatment systems. It seems vital to conduct further research on the physiology and biochemistry of the common reed, with the aim of increasing the plant’s efficiency for pollutants removal.

Phytoremediation potential of castor (Ricinus communis L.) in the soils of the abandoned copper mine in Northern Oman: implications for arid regions

Contamination levels of copper (Cu) and other heavy metals are very high in the soils of the abandoned copper mine of Lasail in the north western Hajar Mountains of Oman. Environment-friendly approaches such as phytoremediation are needed to clean and rehabilitate these areas to their natural status. In the present study, the phytoremediation potential of castor, Ricinus communis L., was evaluated for copper and other heavy metals by growing it in different types of Cu-mine soils and slags. Growth parameters such as shoot height and biomass weight (fresh and dry) were evaluated. Castor showed a high tolerance index (TI) in Cu-mine soils. The highest TI was calculated for the fresh mass of castor shoots in E soil with a percentage of 405.99. The translocation factor (TF) of all the metals except boron (B) and manganese (Mn) was < 1, which reveals that these metals are stabilised in the root portion of the castor. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) value < 1 for Cu indicates that castor is not a hyperaccumulator plant for copper. In addition to high concentrations of copper, other heavy metals such as arsenic (As), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) were observed in the roots than in shoots. Castor grown in slag accumulated Cu in the shoots, roots, and entire plant with the values of 25, 1184, and 1209 mg kg^-1, respectively. Similarly, castor cultivated in A soil accumulated 18, 901, and 919 mg kg^-1 of copper in shoots, roots, and entire plant, respectively. The calculated plant effective number (PENt) indicated the need for 253 castor plants to remove 1 g of Cu from E soil. The ability of castor to grow well in Cu-mine soils suggests that it can be used for the removal of Cu and other heavy metals. Additionally, the shoot portion could potentially be used for oil production since the phytoaccumulation levels of heavy metal concentration in the shoots were below the standard toxicity limits.
