Cartap removal from simulated water matrices by fluidized-bed Fenton process: optimization of process parameters

High-performance Cu/Mn modified ceramsite as a persulfate activator to degrade oxytetracycline in batch Erlenmeyer flask and continuous-flow fixed-bed column systems: An exploration of its practicability and non-radical mechanisms

Persulfate non-radical oxidation have excellent catalytic capability for degrading specific contaminants in complicated water environments. Nevertheless, the preparation of high-performance activators and their application in actual water treatment in continuous flow mode are still scarce and unsatisfactory. In this work, copper-, manganese-, and copper/manganese-doped ceramsites (Cu-C, Mn-C and Cu/Mn-C), successfully fabricated through a facile impregnation-calcination approach, were characterized and evaluated for their performance to activate potassium peroxydisulfate (PDS) and degrade oxytetracycline (OTC) under different pH, ceramsite dosages, and PDS dosages. Compared with Cu-C and Mn-C, Cu/Mn-C showed the highest OTC degradation rate (0.0264 min-1) via activating PDS with an OTC removal efficiency of 98.2% in 240 min at an initial OTC concentration of 40 mg/L. The removal efficiency of OTC by Cu/Mn-C only decreased to 92.8% after 5 cycles; the activating ability of the used Cu/Mn-C was almost completely recovered through 2 h of calcination at 500 °C. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance and radical quenching suggest that singlet oxygen (1O2) was unveiled to be the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) for contaminant degradation, originating from the regrouping of superoxide ions or reduction of active Cu/Mn sites. Synergies between Cu and Mn species to enhance ROS yield were the primary activating mechanisms. Six possible routes of OTC decomposition were inferred. Additionally, Cu/Mn-C behaved excellently in treating an actual wastewater using a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor. It is believed that this novel Cu/Mn-C/PDS system may create a fresh path to design effective and cheap metal-ceramsite hybrid activators for degrading recalcitrant contaminants in the actual application process.

High-precision luminescent covalent organic frameworks with sp2-carbon connection for visual detecting of nereistoxin-related insecticide

A new strategy for nereistoxin-related insecticide, cartap, detection in foodstuff and the environment is of great importance due to its poisoning of human beings through direct exposure or via biomagnification. Herein, a highly planar conjugated sp² carbon-connected COF (F-C_sp²-TT) was synthesized via Knoevenagel condensation reaction followed by the post-modification to develop a new platform for cartap visual detection in agricultural and food samples. The synergistic effect of highly planar conjugation and dense functional groups in the opened framework endowed F-C_sp²-TT with a high-precision luminescence sensing performance. Meanwhile, the exquisitely designed F-C_sp²-TT presented robust chemical stability, radiation stability, and good reproducibility. Benefiting from these advantages, high-precision luminescent F-C_sp²-TT achieves a low detection limit of 0.51 μg/L to cartap over the range of 1-300 μg/L (R²=0.9938), and the recoveries percentage in food products was calculated as 95.90%- 119.3%. More significantly, the smartphone-based high-precision platform by F-C_sp²-TT was established and successfully applied to portable monitoring of cartap and water content. Therefore, our work revealed the enormous potential of C_sp²-connected COF, which opened a new situation for insecticide detection.

Degradation of trypan blue dye using neutralized red mud in circulating fluidized bed reactor and its kinetics study

Dye is a common pollutant present in many chemical industrial waste water. Advanced oxidation processes are widely used for dye degradation. In this study, the degradation of trypan blue dye was examined by Fenton process. Neutralized red mud catalyst was used as a source of ferrous ion for Fenton’s process. The dye degradation performance has been analyzed by using circulating fluidized-bed reactor. The influence of some key parameters such as pH, initial dye concentration, catalyst dosage and hydrogen peroxide concentration on the degradation of dye has been investigated. All the experiments were performed for 90 min. The initial dye concentration was taken as 1.56 × 10−5 and 2.60 × 10−5 mol L−1 and the amount of catalyst was varied from 0.5 to 0.7 gm/L. The hydrogen peroxide was taken in the ratio of 1:20 with the catalyst. The effect of pH was studied in the varying range from 3–5. It was found that the more the acidic pH, more will be the rate of degradation. The increase in pH results in the lower degradation rate. As the amount of catalyst was increased, the degradation rate got increased. The optimized results were obtained at pH 3, catalyst dosage of 0.7 gm/L and dye concentration of 1.56 × 10−5 mol L−1. Subsequently, the reaction kinetics of Fluidized-bed reactor was also studied.
