Oxygen-containing functional groups in Fe3O4@three-dimensional graphene nanocomposites for enhancing H2O2 production and orientation to 1O2 in electro-Fenton

In electro-Fenton (EF), development of a bifunctional electrocatalyst to realize simultaneous H2O2 generation and activation efficiently for generating reactive species remains a challenge. In particular, a nonradical-mediated EF is more favorable for actual wastewater remediation, and deserves more attention. In this study, three-dimensional graphene loaded with Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@3D-GNs) with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups (OFGs) was synchronously synthesized using a NaCl-template method and served as a cathode to establish a highly efficient and selective EF process for contaminant degradation. The amounts of OFGs can be effectively modulated via the pyrolysis temperature to regulate the 2e- oxygen reduction reaction activity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The optimized Fe3O4@3D-GNs synthesized at 750 °C (Fe3O4@3D-GNs-750) with the highest -C-O-C and -C꞊O group ratios exhibited the maximum H2O2 and 1O2 yields during electrocatalysis, thus showing remarkable versatility for eliminating organic contaminants from surface water bodies. Experiments and theoretical calculations have demonstrated the dominant role of -C-O-C in generating H2O2 and the positive influence of -C꞊O sites on the production of 1O2. Moreover, the surface-bound Fe(II) favors the generation of surface-bound •OH, which steers a more favorable oxidative conversion of H2O2 to 1O2. Fe3O4@3D-GNs were proven to be less pH-dependent, low-energy, stable, and recyclable for practical applications in wastewater purification. This study provides an innovative strategy to engineer active sites to achieve the selective electrocatalysis for eliminating pollution and reveals a novel perspective for 1O2-generation mechanism in the Fenton reaction.

Fe-N co-doped biochar derived from biomass waste triggers peracetic acid activation for efficient water decontamination

In this study, the porous carbon material (FeN-BC) with ultra-high catalytic activity was obtained from waste biomass through Fe-N co-doping. The prominent degradation rate (> 96.8%) of naproxen (NAP) was achieved over a wide pH range (pH 3.0-9.0) in FeN-BC/PAA system. Unlike previously reported iron-based peracetic acid (PAA) systems with •OH or RO• as the dominated reactive species, the degradation of contaminants was attributed to singlet oxygen (1O2) produced by organic radicals (RO•) decomposition, which was proved to be thermodynamically feasible and favorable by theoretical calculations. Combining the theoretical calculations, characteristic and experimental analysis, the synergistic effects of Fe and N were proposed and summarized as follows: i) promoted the formation of extensive defects and Fe0 species that facilitated electron transfer between FeN-BC and PAA and continuous Fe(II) generation; ii) modified the specific surface area (SSA) and the isoelectric point of FeN-BC in favor of PAA adsorption on the catalyst surface. This study provides a strategy for waste biomass reuse to construct a heterogeneous catalyst/PAA system for efficient water purification and reveals the synergistic effects of typical metal-heteroatom for PAA activation.

Sulfite induced degradation of sulfamethoxazole by a silica stabilized ZIF-67(Co) catalyst via non-radical pathways: Formation and role of high-valent Co(IV) and singlet oxygen

The sulfite (S(IV))-based advanced oxidation process (AOP) has emerged as an appealing alternative to the traditional persulfate-based AOP for the elimination of organic contaminants from diverse water matrices. In this work, a silica reinforced ZIF-67(Co) catalyst (CZS) is fabricated, characterized and tested in the activation of S(IV) for the sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. The prepared CZS demonstrates superior stability and catalytic ability for the degradation of SMX compared to ZIF-67(Co) across a broad pH range. Unlike the conventional radical-dominated oxidation systems, the CZS/S(IV) system for SMX degradation operates through a non-radical mechanism, featuring high-valent Co(IV) and singlet oxygen (1O2) as the predominated reactive species. The hydroxylated Co species exposed on the CZS surface is identified as the pivotal active site, realizing the S(IV) activation through a complexation-electron transfer process, resulting in the production of various reactive intermediates. Co(II) undergoes the conversion to Co(IV) by generated HSO5-, and 1O2 predominantly originates from the intermediate SO4•-. Profiting from the highly selective oxidation capacities of Co(IV) and 1O2, the established oxidative system demonstrates a remarkable interference resistance and exhibits an exceptional decontamination performance under real-world water conditions. In short, this work provides a sustainable S(IV)-based oxidation strategy for environmental remediation via non-radical mechanism.

Non-radical activation of low additive periodate by carbon-doped boron nitride for acetaminophen degradation: Significance of high-potential metastable intermediates

Metal-free environmental-friendly and cost-effective catalysts for periodate (PI) activation are crucial to popularize their application for micropollutant removal in water. Herein, we report that carbon-doped boron nitride (C-BN) can efficiently activate PI to degrade acetaminophen under very low oxidant doses (40 μM) and over a relatively wide pH range (3-9). As expected, the significant reduction in periodate addition is likely to be due to the higher chemical utilization efficiency achieved by a non-radical oxidation pathway. This involved two main mechanisms, the electron transfer process mediated by the high-potential metastable C-BN-900-PI* complex and singlet oxygen. In this case, the CO groups and defects on the C-BN surface were identified as key active sites for PI activation. Notably, the prepared C-BN-900 had good cycling performance and the degradation efficiency is recovered after simple annealing. The existence of HCO3- and HA significantly inhibited the reaction, whereas Cl-, SO42-, and NO3- had little effect on the degradation of ACE. Overall, this study provides a new alternative method to regulate the non-radical pathway of boron nitride/periodate system.

MnFe layered double hydroxides confined MnOx for peroxymonosulfate activation: A novel manner for the selective production of singlet oxygen

Singlet oxygen (1O2) is a reactive species for the selective degradation of stubborn organic pollutants. Given its resistance to harsh water environment, the effective and exclusive generation of 1O2 is acknowledged as a key strategy to mitigate water production costs and ensure water supply safety. Herein, we synthesized MnOx intercalated MnFe layered double hydroxides (MF-MnOx) to selectively produce 1O2 through the activation of PMS. The distinctive confined structure endowed MF-MnOx with a special pathway for the PMS activation. The direct oxidation of BPA on the intercalated MnOx induced the charge imbalance in the MnFe-LDH layer, resulting in the selective generation of 1O2. Moreover, acceptable activity deterioration of MF-MnOx was observed in a 10 h continuous degradation test in actual water, substantiating the application potential of MF-MnOx. This work presents a novel catalyst for the selective production of 1O2, and evaluates its prospects in the remediation of micro-polluted water.

A high-precision wound healing assay based on photosensitized culture substrates

Quantitative assessment of cell migration in vitro is often required in fundamental and applied research from different biomedical areas including wound repair, tumor metastasis or developmental biology. A collection of assays has been established throughout the years like the most widely used scratch assay or the so-called barrier assay. It is the principle of these assays to introduce a lesion into an otherwise confluent monolayer in order to study the migration of cells from the periphery into this artificial wound and determine the migration rate from the time necessary for wound closure. A novel assay makes use of photosensitizers doped into a polystyrene matrix. A thin layer of this composite material is coated on the bottom of regular cell culture ware showing perfect biocompatibility. When adherent cells are grown on this coating, resonant excitation of the photosensitizer induces a very local generation of 1O2, which kills the cells residing at the site of illumination. Cells outside the site of illumination are not harmed. When excitation of the photosensitizer is conducted by microscopic illumination, high-precision wounding in any size and geometry is available even in microfluidic channels. Besides proof-of-concept experiments, this study gives further insight into the mechanism of photosensitizer-mediated cell wounding.

Influence mechanism of anions on iron doping into swine bone char: Promoting non-radical oxidation of acetaminophen in a Fenton-like system

The application of iron-doped biochar in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation systems has gained increasing attention due to their effectiveness and environmental friendliness in addressing environmental issues. However, the behavioral mechanism of iron doping and the detailed 1O2 generation mechanism in PMS activation systems remain ambiguous. Here, we investigated the effects of three anions (Cl-, NO3-and SO42-) on the process of iron doping into bone char, leading to the synthesis of three iron-doped bone char (Fe-ClBC, Fe-NBC and Fe -SBC). These iron-doped bone char were used to catalyze PMS to degrade acetaminophen (APAP) and exhibited the following activity order: Fe-ClBC > Fe-NBC > Fe-SBC. Characterization results indicated that iron doping primarily occurred through the substitution of calcium in hydroxyapatite within BC. In the course of the impregnation, the binding of SO42- and Ca2+ hindered the exchange of iron ions, resulting in lower catalytic activity of Fe-SBC. The primary reactive oxygen species in the Fe-ClBC/PMS and Fe-NBC/PMS systems were both 1O2. 1O2 is produced through O2•- conversion and PMS self-dissociation, which involves the generation of metastable iron intermediates and electron transfer within iron species. The presence of oxygen vacancies and more carbon defects in the Fe-ClBC catalyst facilitates 1O2 generation, thereby enhancing APAP degradation within the Fe-ClBC/PMS system. This study is dedicated to in-depth exploration of the mechanisms underlying iron doping and defect materials in promoting 1O2 generation.

Singlet oxygen-based photoelectrochemical detection of miRNAs in prostate cancer patients' plasma: A novel diagnostic tool for liquid biopsy

Dysregulation of miRNA expression occurs in many cancers, making miRNAs useful in cancer diagnosis and therapeutic guidance. In a clinical context using methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the limited amount of miRNAs in circulation often limits their quantification. Here, we present a PCR-free and sensitive singlet oxygen (1O2)-based strategy for the detection and quantification of miRNAs in untreated human plasma from patients diagnosed with prostate cancer. A target miRNA is specifically captured by functionalised magnetic beads and a detection oligonucleotide probe in a sandwich-like format. The formed complex is concentrated at the sensor surface via magnetic beads, providing an interface for the photoinduced redox signal amplification. The detection oligonucleotide probe bears a molecular photosensitiser, which produces 1O2 upon illumination, oxidising a redox reporter and creating a redox cycling loop, allowing quantification of pM level miRNA in diluted human plasma within minutes after hybridisation and without target amplification.

Singlet oxygen-based photoelectrochemical detection of single-point mutations in the KRAS oncogene

Single nucleotide point mutations in the KRAS oncogene occur frequently in human cancers, rendering them intriguing targets for diagnosis, early detection and personalized treatment. Current detection methods are based on polymerase chain reaction, sometimes combined with next-generation sequencing, which can be expensive, complex and have limited availability. Here, we propose a novel singlet oxygen (1O2)-based photoelectrochemical detection methodology for single-point mutations, using KRAS mutations as a case study. This detection method combines the use of a sandwich assay, magnetic beads and robust chemical photosensitizers, that need only air and light to produce 1O2, to ensure high specificity and sensitivity. We demonstrate that hybridization of the sandwich hybrid at high temperatures enables discrimination between mutated and wild-type sequences with a detection rate of up to 93.9%. Additionally, the presence of background DNA sequences derived from human cell-line DNA, not containing the mutation of interest, did not result in a signal, highlighting the specificity of the methodology. A limit of detection as low as 112 pM (1.25 ng/mL) was achieved without employing any amplification techniques. The developed 1O2-based photoelectrochemical methodology exhibits unique features, including rapidity, ease of use, and affordability, highlighting its immense potential in the field of nucleic acid-based diagnostics.

Mechanism of biochar composite (BN3Z0.5BC) activated peracetic acid for efficient antibiotic degradation: Synergistic effect between free radicals and non-free radicals

This study utilized corn straw as the feedstock to synthesize biochar (BC) loaded with cobalt-zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoparticles and boron nitride quantum dots. The prepared BC composite, named BN3Z0.5BC, efficiently activated peracetic acid (PAA), resulting in the degradation of 94.8% of sulfadiazine (SDZ) in five minutes. Compared to pure BC, the SDZ removal rate increased nearly 5-fold. Mechanism analysis revealed that the main degradation pathway involves synergism between free and non-free radicals. The defect structure on the BC surface possesses a high charge density, stimulating PAA to produce more active species, while nitrogen-oxygen vacancy formation significantly promotes charge transfer. Besides, the unique structure of BC ensures good stability and recyclability, effectively controlling metal leaching. The BN3Z0.5BC/PAA system shows promising applicability across various water matrices, indicating a favorable application outlook.

Decomposition of microplastics using copper oxide/bismuth vanadate-based photocatalysts: Insight mechanisms and environmental impacts

To mitigate marine pollution, we improved the photo-Fenton reaction of modified nanoscale CuO/BiVO4 photocatalysts to resolve the challenge of efficient microplastic degradation in wastewater treatment. Material property analysis and computational results revealed that deposition of CuO onto BiVO4 nanocomposites improved photocatalytic activity by promoting an excess of electrons in CuO and surface charge transfer, resulting in an increased production of e--h+ for ROS generation via H2O2 activation. 1O2 was dominated and identified through quenching experiments, XPS analysis, and EPR. ROS generation increased via H2O2 activation, causing major surface abrasion and increased carbonyl and vinyl indices in microplastics. Treated water had minimal impact on Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. seedling growth but caused considerable mortality in cell lines and Moina macrocopa mortality at greater dosages due to their sensitivity to ions and H2O2 residuals. Overall, this treatment can effectively degrade microplastics, but the dilution of treated water is still needed before being discharged.

Cobalt doping amount determines dominant reactive species in peroxymonosulfate activation via porous carbon catalysts co-doped by cobalt and nitrogen

Switching the reaction routes in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have attracted much attention but remain challenging. Herein, a series of Co-N/C catalysts with different compositions and structures were prepared by using bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks based on ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 (xZn/Co-ZIFs). Results show that Co doping amount could mediate the transformation of the activation pathway of PMS over Co-N/C. When Co doping amount was less than 10%, the constructed xCo-N/C/PMS system (x ≤ 10%) was singlet oxygen-dominated reaction; however further increasing Co doping amount would lead to the generation and coexistence of sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt, besides singlet oxygen. Furthermore, the nitrogen-coordinated Co (Co-NX) sites could serve as main catalytically active sites to generate singlet oxygen. While excess Co doping amount caused the formation of Co nanoparticles from which leached Co ions were responsible for the generation of sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt. Compared to undoped N/C, Co doping could significantly enhance the catalytic performance. The 0.5% Co-N/C could achieve the optimum degradation (0.488 min-1) and mineralization abilities (78.4%) of sulfamethoxazole among the investigated Co-N/C catalysts, which was superior to most of previously reported catalysts. In addition, the application prospects of the two systems in different environmental scenarios (pH, inorganic anions and natural organic matter) were assessed and showed different degradation behaviors. This study provides a strategy to regulate the reactive species in PMS-based advanced oxidation process.

Enhancing singlet oxygen production of dioxygen activation on the carbon-supported rare-earth oxide nanocluster and rare-earth single atom catalyst to remove antibiotics

Singlet oxygen (1O2) is extensively employed in the fields of chemical, biomedical and environmental. However, it is still a challenge to produce high- concentration 1O2 by dioxygen activation. Herein, a system of carbon-supported rare-earth oxide nanocluster and single atom catalysts (named as RE2O3/RE-C, RE=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Sc and Y) with similar morphology, structure, and physicochemical characteristic are constructed to activate dissolved oxygen (DO) to enhance 1O2 production. The catalytic activity trends and mechanisms are revealed experimentally and are also proven by theoretical analyses and calculations. The 1O2 generation activity trend is Gd2O3/Gd-C>Er2O3/Er-C>Sm2O3/Sm-C>pristine carbon (C). More than 95.0% of common antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin and carbamazepine) can be removed in 60 min by Gd2O3/Gd-C. Density functional theory calculations indicate that Gd2O3 nanoclusters and Gd single atoms exhibit the moderate adsorption energy of ·O2- to enhance 1O2 production. This study offers a universal strategy to enhance 1O2 production in dioxygen activation for future application and reveals the natural essence of basic mechanisms of 1O2 production via rare-earth oxide nanoclusters and rare-earth single atoms.

Paint sludge derived activated carbon encapsulating with cobalt nanoparticles for non-radical activation of peroxymonosulfate

Industrial solid waste management and recycling are important to environmental sustainability. In this study, cobalt (Co) nanoparticles encapsulated in paint sludge-derived activated carbon (AC) were fabricated. The Co-AC possessed high conductivity, magnetic properties and abundant metal oxide impurities (TiAlSiOx), which was applied as multifunctional catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Compared to pure AC, the Co-AC exhibited significant enhanced performance for degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) via PMS activation. Mechanism studies by in situ Raman spectroscopy, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, electrochemical analysis and electron paramagnetic resonance suggested that surface-bonded PMS (PMS*) and singlet oxygen (1O2) are the dominant reactive species for TCH oxidation. The non-radical species can efficiently oxidize electron-rich pollutants with high efficiency, which minimized the consumption of PMS and the catalyst. The removal percentages of TCH reached 97 % within 5 min and ∼ 99 % within 15 min in the Co-AC/PMS system. The Co active sites facilitated PMS adsorption to form the PMS* and the TiAlSiOx impurities provided abundant oxygen vacancy for generation of the 1O2. In addition, the Co-AC/PMS system achieved high efficiency and stability for oxidation of the target pollutants over a long-term continuous operation. This work not only offers a cost-effective approach for recycling industrial waste but also provides new insights into the application of waste-derived catalyst for environmental remediation.

Superoxide radical generator based on triphenylamine-based supramolecular organic framework for green light photocatalysis

Supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) mostly require high-energy purple or blue light for photocatalytic reactions, while highly abundant and low-energy light systems have rarely been explored. Therefore, it is necessary to construct 2D SOFs for low-energy light-induced photocatalysis. This study describes the design and synthesis of a water-soluble two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular organic framework (TP-SOF) using the host-guest interaction between a triphenylamine derivative (TP-3Py) and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). The formation of the 2D SOF can be attributed to the synergistic impact resulting from the orientated head-to-tail superposition mode between the vinylpyridine arms of TP-3Py and CB[8], which results in a significant redshift in the UV-vis absorption spectrum, especially displaying a strong absorption band in the green light region. The monomeric TP-3Py can effectively produce singlet oxygen (1O2) and realize the photocatalytic oxidation of thioanisole in the aqueous solution. In comparison to monomeric TP-3Py, the confinement effect of CB[8] results in a notable enhancement in the production efficiency of superoxide anion radicals (O2•-), exhibiting promising prospects in the field of photocatalytic oxidation reaction, which facilitates the application of TP-SOF as a very efficient photosensitizer for the promotion of the oxidative hydroxylation of arylboronic acids under green light in the aqueous solution, giving a high yield of 91%. The present study not only presents a compelling illustration of photocatalysis utilizing a 2D SOF derived from triphenylamine, but also unveils promising avenues for the photocatalytic oxidation of SOF employing low-energy light systems.

Revealing the synergistic effect between radical and non-radical species of sulfur-doped carbon nitride for ciprofloxacin removal: Based on density functional theory study

The distinct characteristics of active species produced during the photocatalytic reaction can result in alterations in the degradation routes of organic pollutants with diverse chemical structures. The relationship between the active species and degradation pathways of organic pollutants lacks a direct experimental or characterization method, so in-depth research is still needed to understand the details of their interactions. In this study, sulfur-doped bulk carbon nitride (SBCN) was prepared based on bulk carbon nitride (BCN), and the process of S-doping enhancing the production of O21 was revealed. Through the degradation experiment, the degradation rate of CIP by SBCN reached 91 %, which was higher than that of BCN (66 %). The increase of degradation rate was mainly attributed to the increase of O21. Through the density functional theory (DFT) calculation of CIP and its degradation intermediate, due to the preferential oxidation of CIP by O21, O21 changes the initial degradation direction of CIP, releasing more attack sites for ˙O2-, thereby achieving more efficient degradation of CIP through the synergy of O21 and ˙O2-. In this study, the attack preferences of the active species and their synergistic promotion provide important insights for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Evaluation of the photosensitizer activity of hydrophobic phosphorus(V)porphyrins using the absorption spectral change of 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide

Under visible light irradiation, water-insoluble P(V)porphyrins oxidized 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide (BNADH), a model compound for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, and diminished the typical absorption of BNADH at around 340 nm. A singlet oxygen quencher, sodium azide, partially inhibited photosensitized BNADH oxidation. This BNADH oxidation photosensitized by P(V)porphyrins in the presence of sodium azide can be explained by electron transfer oxidation from BNADH to the photoexcited P(V)porphyrins. The quantum yields of BNADH oxidation via electron transfer by these P(V)porphyrins were larger than those of a singlet oxygen mechanism. Redox potential measurements supported the electron transfer mechanism from a thermodynamic point of view, and fluorescence lifetime measurement also suggests this mechanism. The process of this electron transfer oxidation involves the radical formation of BNADH and the further reaction of this radical to the oxidized form (cationic form of BNADH). Analysis of the quantum yields of BNADH photooxidation by P(V)porphyrins suggests that the photoinduced electron transfer from BNADH to photoexcited P(V)porphyrins triggers the radical chain reaction of BNADH oxidation. The electron transfer rate coefficient and this efficiency were increased with an increase in the Gibbs energy of electron transfer from tryptophan to photoexcited P(V)porphyrins (-ΔG). However, the BNADH oxidation quantum yield via electron transfer decreased with an increase in the -ΔG of electron transfer. These results suggest that reverse electron transfer inhibits the decomposition of BNAD radicals. This assay using BNADH can be used to evaluate the photosensitizer activity of water-insoluble compounds. These P(V)porphyrins may be used as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy in a relatively hydrophobic environment in cancer tissues.

Photogeneration and quenching of singlet molecular oxygen by bacterial C40 carotenoids with long chain of conjugated double bonds

Measurement of photosensitized luminescence of singlet oxygen has been applied to studies of singlet oxygen generation and quenching by C40 carotenoids (neurosporene, lycopene, rhodopin, and spirilloxanthin) with long chain of conjugated double bonds (CDB) using hexafluorobenzene as a solvent. It has been found that neurosporene, lycopene, and rhodopin are capable of the low efficient singlet oxygen generation in aerated solutions upon photoexcitation in the spectral region of their main absorption maxima. The quantum yield of this process was estimated to be (1.5-3.0) × 10-2. This value is near the singlet oxygen yields in solutions of ζ-carotene (7 CDB) and phytoene (3 CDB) and many-fold smaller than in solutions of phytofluene (5 CDB) (Ashikhmin et al. Biochemistry (Mosc) 85:773-780, https://doi.org/10.1134/S0006297920070056 , 2020, Biochemistry (Mosc) 87:1169-1178, 2022, https://doi.org/10.1134/S00062979221001082022 ). Photogeneration of singlet oxygen was not observed in spirilloxanthin solutions. A correlation was found between the singlet oxygen yields and the quantum yields and lifetimes of the fluorescence of the carotenoid molecules. All carotenoids were shown to be strong physical quenchers of singlet oxygen. The rate constants of 1O2 quenching by the carotenoids with long chain of CDB (9-13) were close to the rate constant of the diffusion-limited reactions ≈1010 M-1 s-1, being many-fold greater than the rate constants of 1O2 quenching by the carotenoids with the short chain of CDB (3-7) phytoene, phytofluene, and ζ-carotene studied in prior papers of our group (Ashikhmin et al. 2020, 2022). To our knowledge, the quenching rate constants of rhodopin and spirilloxanthin have been obtained in this paper for the first time. The mechanisms of 1O2 photogeneration by carotenoids in solution and in the LH2 complexes of photosynthetic cells, as well as the efficiencies of their protective action are discussed.

Performance and mechanism of biochar@FeMg-LDH for efficient activation of persulfate for degradation of 2, 4-dichlorophenol in groundwater

Groundwater environments are complex, and traditional advanced oxidation technologies mainly based on free radicals have limitations such as poor selectivity and low interference resistance, making it difficult to efficiently degrade target pollutants in groundwater. Therefore, we developed a sludge-based biochar-supported FeMg-layered double hydroxide catalyst (BC@FeMg-LDH) for the catalytic degradation of 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2, 4-DCP) using persulfate (PDS) as an oxidant. The removal efficiency of the catalyst exceeded 95%, showing high oxidation activity in a wide pH range while being almost unaffected by reducing substances and ions in the environment. Meanwhile, under neutral conditions, the leaching of metal ions from BC@FeMg-LDH was minimal, thereby eliminating the risk of secondary pollution. According to quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, the main active species during BC@FeMg-LDH/PDS degradation of 2, 4-DCP is 1O2, indicating a non-radical reaction mechanism dominated by 1O2. Characterization techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, revealed that the carbonyl (C = O) and metal hydroxyl (M-OH) groups on the material surface were the main reactive sites mediating 1O2 generation. The 1O2 generation mechanism during the reaction involved ketone-like activation of carbonyl groups on the biochar surface and complexation of hydroxyl groups on the material surface with PDS, resulting in the formation of O2·- and further generation of 1O2. 1O2 exhibited high selectivity toward electron-rich organic compounds such as 2, 4-DCP and demonstrated strong interference resistance in complex groundwater environments. Therefore, BC@FeMg-LDH holds promising applications for the remediation of organic-contaminated groundwater.

Development of natural attapulgite derived ferromanganese spinel oxides as heterogeneous catalysts for persulfate activation of tetracycline degradation

Ferromanganese spinel oxides (MnFe2O4, MFO) have been proven effective in activating persulfate for pollutants removal. However, their inherent high surface energy often leads to agglomeration, diminishing active sites and consequently restricting catalytic performance. In this study, using Al-MCM-41 (MCM) mesoporous molecular sieves derived from natural attapulgite as a support, the MFO/MCM composite was synthesized through dispersing MnFe2O4 nanoparticles on MCM carrier by a simple hydrothermal method, which can effectively activate persulfate (PS) to degrade Tetracycline (TC). The addition of Al-MCM-41 can effectively improve the specific surface area and adsorption performance of MnFe2O4, but also reduce the leaching amount of metal ions. The MFO/MCM composite exhibited superior catalytic reactivity towards PS and 84.3% removal efficiency and 64.7% mineralization efficiency of TC (20 mg/L) was achieved in 90 min under optimized conditions of 0.05 mg/L catalyst dosage, 5 mM PS concentration, room temperature and no adjustment of initial pH. The effects of various stoichiometric MFO/MCM ratio, catalyst dosage, PS concentration, initial pH value and co-existing ions on the catalytic performance were investigated in detail. Moreover, the possible reaction mechanism in MFO-MCM/PS system was proposed based on the results of quenching tests, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and XPS analyses. Finally, major degradation intermediates of TC were detected by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry technologies (LC-MS) and four possible degradation pathways were proposed. This study enhances the design approach for developing highly efficient, environmentally friendly and low-cost catalysts for the advanced treatment process of antibiotic wastewater.

Refining antimicrobial photodynamic therapy: effect of charge distribution and central metal ion in fluorinated porphyrins on effective control of planktonic and biofilm bacterial forms

Antibiotic resistance represents a pressing global health challenge, now acknowledged as a critical concern within the framework of One Health. Photodynamic inactivation of microorganisms (PDI) offers an attractive, non-invasive approach known for its flexibility, independence from microbial resistance patterns, broad-spectrum efficacy, and minimal risk of inducing resistance. Various photosensitizers, including porphyrin derivatives have been explored for pathogen eradication. In this context, we present the synthesis, spectroscopic and photophysical characteristics as well as antimicrobial properties of a palladium(II)-porphyrin derivative (PdF2POH), along with its zinc(II)- and free-base counterparts (ZnF2POH and F2POH, respectively). Our findings reveal that the palladium(II)-porphyrin complex can be classified as an excellent generator of reactive oxygen species (ROS), encompassing both singlet oxygen (Φ△ = 0.93) and oxygen-centered radicals. The ability of photosensitizers to generate ROS was assessed using a variety of direct (luminescence measurements) and indirect techniques, including specific fluorescent probes both in solution and in microorganisms during the PDI procedure. We investigated the PDI efficacy of F2POH, ZnF2POH, and PdF2POH against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. All tested compounds proved high activity against Gram-positive species, with PdF2POH exhibiting superior efficacy, leading to up to a 6-log reduction in S. aureus viability. Notably, PdF2POH-mediated PDI displayed remarkable effectiveness against S. aureus biofilm, a challenging target due to its complex structure and increased resistance to conventional treatments. Furthermore, our results show that PDI with PdF2POH is more selective for bacterial than for mammalian cells, particularly at lower light doses (up to 5 J/cm2 of blue light illumination). This enhanced efficacy of PdF2POH-mediated PDI as compared to ZnF2POH and F2POH can be attributed to more pronounced ROS generation by palladium derivative via both types of photochemical mechanisms (high yields of singlet oxygen generation as well as oxygen-centered radicals). Additionally, PDI proved effective in eliminating bacteria within S. aureus-infected human keratinocytes, inhibiting infection progression while preserving the viability and integrity of infected HaCaT cells. These findings underscore the potential of metalloporphyrins, particularly the Pd(II)-porphyrin complex, as promising photosensitizers for PDI in various bacterial infections, warranting further investigation in advanced infection models.

Enhanced activation of persulfate by modified red mud biochar for degradation of dye pollutant: Resource utilization and non-radical activation

The substantial development of the dyeing and printing industry has resulted in an increased discharge of dye wastewater containing a large amount of recalcitrant organic pollutants. Furthermore, the landfill disposal of red mud has led to significant environmental pollution such as soil erosion and groundwater contamination. Therefore, this study aimed to promote the resource utilization of red mud by preparing advanced oxidation catalyst, resulting in effective treatment of dye wastewater, and the primary reaction mechanism was revealed. In this study, biochar-loading red mud (RBC) was applied to activate persulfate (PDS) for the degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7) with the initial concentration of 50 mg L-1. The maximum removal rate of 2.45 mg L·min-1 was achieved in 20 min and corresponding with the removal ratio of 98.0% under the PDS concentration of 20 mM (4.76 g L-1). Eventually, the removal ratio of 99.2% was attained within 60 min. The high catalytic efficiency was probably ascribed to the singlet oxygen (1O2) dominant non-radical pathway and RBC-mediated electron transfer mechanism. It was found that Fe(II), specific surface areas and functional groups on the catalyst were highly related to its catalytic efficiency and passivation. RBC had better reusability due to the loading of biochar and the reduction of zero-valent iron. The non-radical pathway mechanism and electron transfer mechanism were proposed for the activation of PDS, and non-radical pathway played a dominant role. Besides, the degradation pathways and toxicity assessment were analyzed. This research proposed a new electron transfer mechanism for activation process of PDS, which can provide a theoretical support for further studies. Overall, this study demonstrated that catalysts synthesized from red mud and biomass exhibit highly efficient activation in degrading the model pollutant AO7 through PDS activation. The catalyst displayed promising reusability and practical applicability, offering potential advancements in both the resource utilization and reduction of red mud.

Tuning Fluorescence and Singlet Oxygen Quantum Yields of Subporphyrazines by Axial Functionalization

The axial functionalization of Subporphyrazines (SubPzs) with unreported alkoxy groups, carboxy and carboperoxy rests, as well as sulfanyl, aryl and amino groups, forming B-O, B-S, B-C, and B-N bonds, respectively, has been investigated. The studied oxygen nucleophiles include aromatic and sterically demanding aliphatic alcohols, along with carboxylic acids and peracids. In general, direct substitution of the chloro-SubPz by oxygen nucleophiles of diverse nature proceeds smoothly, with yields of the isolated alkoxy and carboxy-substituted SubPzs ranging from 49 to 100 %. Conversely, direct substitution with sulphur, carbon and nitrogen nucleophiles do not afford the corresponding substituted SubPzs. In these cases, a stepwise procedure involving an axial triflate-SubPz intermediate was employed, affording only the phenyl-SubPz in 8 % yield. The major compound under these conditions was the unreported SubPz μ-oxo dimer, presumably arising from substitution of the triflate-SubPz by the in situ generated hydroxy-SubPz. This result indicates a quite low reactivity of the TfO-SubPz intermediate with carbon, sulphur and nitrogen nucleophiles. All SubPzs prepared in this work exhibited fluorescence at 510-515 nm with quantum yields ranging from 0.1 to 0.24. Additionally, all SubPzs generated singlet oxygen, with ΦΔ values ranging from 0.15 to 0.57, which show no apparent correlation with the axial substituents.

The mechanism of photodegradation reaction of different dissociation forms of tetrabromobisphenol S in water with free radicals and the ecotoxicity evaluation of related products

Tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) is a widely used brominated flame retardant that has attracted environmental concern due to its abundant presence in water. The objective of this study is to systematically analyze the direct photolysis and degradation mechanisms of TBBPS in two different dissociation forms in water, as well as to evaluate their toxicological effects induced by •OH, 1O2, and •NO2 radicals. The degradation mechanism of TBBPS is investigated with density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods, and the toxicity of the degradation products is assessed through toxicological studies. The results of the study indicate that the OH-addition and H-abstraction reactions are favorable pathways for •OH-induced TBBPS degradation. The H-abstraction reaction of TBBPS0 with •OH was more favorable than the •OH addition reaction. However, in the degradation of TBBPS-, the •OH addition reaction was favored over the H-abstraction reaction. Additionally, the indirect photolysis of TBBPS by 1O2 and •NO2 in water was found to be easier for TBBPS- compared to TBBPS0, with degradation mechanisms involving Br-substitution and NO2-addition reactions. The higher Ea values calculated indicate that the degradation of TBBPS by 1O2 and •NO2 in water has been a secondary reaction. The direct photolysis reaction pathway of TBBPS in water has involved the cleavage of the S1-C7 and S1-C16 bonds. For TBBPS0 in the S1/T1 states, the primary reaction pathway is the cleavage of the S1-C16 bond, while for TBBPS-, the primary reaction pathway is the cleavage of the S1-C7 bond. Furthermore, the computational toxicology results indicate a slight increase in the toxicity levels of most products, highlighting the significance of investigating the degradation byproducts of TBBPS in greater detail.

Daylight photodynamic inactivation of cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus by porphyrins: An alternative for the ectoparasite control

The bovine tick Rhipicephalus microplus, a primary ectoparasite of veterinary concern, contributes significantly to disease transmission and reduced cattle productivity, resulting in substantial economic losses. The overuse of chemical acaricides has led to the emergence of resistant strains, posing a considerable challenge to veterinary medicine. Consequently, the development of alternative parasite control methods is essential to ensure livestock quality and enhance food safety worldwide. Our study introduces an innovative approach to photodynamic inactivation (PDI) of the bovine tick, harnessing natural daylight for a potential field application. Reproductive parameters (female and egg mass, egg production index, and larval hatch) were evaluated in engorged female ticks under photodynamic action using the hematoporphyrin (HP) and tetra-cationic porphyrins free-base meso-tetra-ruthenated (4-pyridyl) (RuTPyP) and its zinc(II) complex (ZnRuTPyP) as photosensitizers (PS). The results showed that there was no significant difference between the groups treated with tetra‑ruthenium porphyrins and the control group. However, HP exhibits a control percentage of 97.9% at a concentration of 2.5 μmol.L-1, aligning with the expected control rates achieved by conventional chemical acaricides. Photophysical and physicochemical parameters such as the number of singlet oxygen produced and lipophilicity were discussed for each PS and related to tick control percentages. Furthermore, the interaction between HP and chitin, an important macromolecule presents in the tick's cuticle, considered as the primary target tick structure during PDI was observed by the absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopic techniques. Therefore, the results presented here extend the potential for controlling R. microplus through photodynamic inactivation while utilizing sunlight as a source of natural irradiation.

Lipid peroxidation and stress-induced signalling molecules in systemic resistance mediated by azelaic acid/AZELAIC ACID INDUCED1: signal initiation and propagation

Systemic acquired resistance protects plants against a broad spectrum of secondary infections by pathogens. A crucial compound involved in the systemic spread of the threat information after primary pathogen infection is the C9 oxylipin azelaic acid (AZA), a breakdown product of unsaturated C18 fatty acids. AZA is generated during lipid peroxidation in the plastids and accumulates in response to various abiotic and biotic stresses. AZA stimulates the expression of AZELAIC ACID INDUCED1 (AZI1), and a pool of AZI1 accumulates in the plastid envelope in association with AZA. AZA and AZI1 utilize the symplastic pathway to travel through the plasmodesmata to neighbouring cells to induce systemic stress resistance responses in distal tissues. Here, we describe the synthesis, travel and function of AZA and AZI1 and discuss open questions of signal initiation and propagation.

BODIPY-fused uracil: synthesis, photophysical properties, and applications

Fluorescent nucleobase and nucleic acid analogs are important tools in chemical and molecular biology as fluorescent labelling of nucleobases has applications in cellular imaging and anti-tumor activity. Boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes exhibiting high brightness and good photostability are extensively used as fluorescent labelling agents and as type II photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy. Thus, the combination of nucleobases and BODIPY to obtain new compounds with both anti-tumor activity and fluorescent imaging functions is the focus of our research. We synthesized two new nucleobase analogs 1 and 2 by fusing the BODIPY core directly with uracil which resulted in favorable photophysical properties and high emission quantum efficiencies particularly in organic solvents. Further, we explored the newly synthesized derivatives, which possessed good singlet oxygen generation efficiencies and bio-compatibility, as potential PDT agents and our results show that they exhibit in vitro anti-tumor activities.

Near infra-red absorbing Quinolizidine fused curcuminoid-BF2 chelate and its applications in photodynamic therapy using MCF-7 and A549 cells

Metal-free near-infrared absorbing photosensitizers (PS) have been considered promising candidates for photodynamic therapy. Curcumin, curcuminoid, and its derivatives have therapeutic values due to their anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antiproliferative properties. Curcuminoid-BF2 chelates have also been studied as cell imaging probes, however, their applications in photodynamic therapy are rare. In this article, we describe the synthesis and therapeutic evaluation of quinolizidine fused curcuminoid-BF2 chelate (Quinolizidine CUR-BF2) containing an acid-sensitive group. This donor-acceptor-donor curcuminoid-BF2 derivative exhibits absorption and emission in the deep red region with an absorption band maximum of ∼647 nm and a weak emission band at approximately 713 nm. It is interesting to note that this derivative has a high molar extinction coefficient (164,655 M-1cm-1). Quinolizidine CUR-BF2 possesses intramolecular charge transfer properties, facilitating the production of singlet oxygen (1O2), which plays a crucial role in cell death. Additionally, Quinolizidine CUR-BF2 can enable the selective release of active ingredients in an acidic medium (pH 5). Furthermore, the nanoaggregates of PS were prepared by encapsulating Quinolizidine CUR-BF2 within Pluronic F127 block co-polymer for better water-dispersibility and enhanced cellular uptake. Dark cytotoxicity of nanoaggregates was found to be negligible, whereas they exhibited significant photoinduced cytotoxicity towards cancer cells (MCF-7 and A549) under irradiation of 635 nm light. Further, the cell death pathway using Quinolizidine CUR-BF2 nanoaggregates as PS is found to occur through apoptosis. Specifically, the present study deals with the successful preparation of Quinolizidine CUR-BF2 nanoaggregates for enhanced water-dispersibility and cellular uptake as well as the efficacy evaluation of developed nanoaggregates for photodynamic therapy.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by trace iron(III) porphyrin for facile degradation of organic pollutants via nonradical oxidation

Nonradical species with great resistance to interference have shown great advantages in complex wastewater treatment. Herein, a novel system constructed by biodegradable tetrakis-(4-carboxyphenyl)-porphyrinatoiron(III) (FeIII-TCPP) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was proposed for facile decontamination. Nonradical pathway is observed in FeIII-TCPP/PMS, where 1O2 and high-valent iron-oxo species play dominant roles. The genres and valence of high-valent iron-oxo species, including iron(IV)-oxo porphyrin radical-cationic species [OFeIV-TCPP•+] and iron(IV)-hydroxide species [FeIV-TCPP(OH)], are ascertained, along with their generation mechanism. The axial ligand on the iron axial site affects the ground spin state of FeIII-TCPP, further influencing the thermodynamic reaction pathway of active species. With trace catalyst in micromoles, FeIII-TCPP exhibits high efficiency by degrading bisphenol S (BPS) completely within 5 min, while Co2+/PMS can only achieve a maximum of 26.2% under identical condition. Beneficial from nonradical pathways, FeIII-TCPP/PMS demonstrates a wide pH range of 3-10 and exhibits minimal sensitivity to interference of concomitant materials. BPS is primarily eliminated through β-scission and hydroxylation. Specifically, 1O2 electrophilically attacks the C-S bond of BPS, while high-valent iron-oxo species interacts with BPS through an oxygen-bound mechanism. This study provides novel insights into efficient activation of PMS by iron porphyrin, enabling the removal of refractory pollutants through nonradical pathway.

Photodynamic Inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus Using Aloe-emodin as Photosensitizer

Aloe-emodin (AE) is a natural compound with photodynamic properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of AE-mediated photodynamic inactivation (PDI) on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The bacteriostatic efficiency under different photodynamic conditions and photosensitizing mechanism was studied in detail. The results showed that AE-mediated PDI exhibited a typical concentration and time-dependent characteristics. In terms of bactericidal mechanism, disruption of membrane integrity and increase of cell membrane permeability was observed. Type II reaction was assumed as the main photochemical reaction involved in AE-mediated PDI as evidenced by the action of different ROS quenching agents. Furthermore, AE-mediated PDI decreased the bacterial survival in freshly squeezed apple juice and maintained its quality. The combination of blue light and AE enlarged the application of AE as an effective natural photosensitizer suitable for a food system.

Microemulsion-Assisted Self-Assembly of Indium Porphyrin Photosensitizers with Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy

Designing and constructing supramolecular photosensitizer nanosystems with highly efficient photodynamic therapy (PDT) is vital in the nanomedical field. Despite recent advances in forming well-defined superstructures, the relationship between molecular arrangement in nanostructures and photodynamic properties has rarely been involved, which is crucial for developing stable photosensitizers for highly efficient PDT. In this work, through a microemulsion-assisted self-assembly approach, indium porphyrin (InTPP) was used to fabricate a series of morphology-controlled self-assemblies, including nanorods, nanospheres, nanoplates, and nanoparticles. They possessed structure-dependent 1O2 generation efficiency. Compared with the other three nanostructures, InTPP nanorods featuring strong π-π stacking, J-aggregation, and high crystallinity proved to be much more efficient at singlet oxygen (1O2) production. Also, theoretical modeling and photophysical experiments verified that the intermolecular π-π stacking in the nanorods could cause a decreased singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔEST) compared with the monomer. This played a key role in enhancing intersystem crossing and facilitating 1O2 generation. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the InTPP nanorods could trigger cell apoptosis and tumor ablation upon laser irradiation (635 nm, 0.1 W/cm2) and exhibited negligible dark toxicity and high phototoxicity. Thus, the supramolecular self-assembly strategy provides an avenue for designing high-performance photosensitizer nanosystems for photodynamic therapy and beyond.

Solvent-free synthesis of foam board-like CoSe2 alloy to selectively generate singlet oxygen via peroxymonosulfate activation for sulfadiazine degradation

Singlet oxygen (1O2) is a highly effective reactive species in selectively oxidizing organic pollutants. However, it is still challenging to rationally design robust catalysts for the selective generation of 1O2. Herein, the coordination and engineering architecture of the foam board-like CoSe2 alloy were facilely constructed through a green solvent-free method and displayed almost 100% 1O2 production selectivity. The CoSe2 alloy showed excellent catalytic ability for the efficient and fast removal of organic pollutants via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation compared with previously reported cobalt-based catalysts. The CoSe2/PMS system exhibited strong resistance for a broad pH range (3.0-11.0) and various coexisting inorganic ions owing to the advantage of the strong bonding of Co-Se in CoSe2 alloy. Mechanism studies revealed that 1O2 was the only reactive oxygen species in the CoSe2/PMS system. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that Co was the dominant adsorption site for PMS in CoSe2, and the production pathway of 1O2 was PMS* → *OH → *O → 1O2. In addition, it was proved that *OH and *O served as the rate-determining steps for the formation of 1O2 by PMS activation on CoSe2 alloy. These findings provide a rational strategy for preparing a series of low-cost transition metal-based alloy catalysts for PMS activation to achieve high-efficiency 1O2 production in the elimination of organic pollutants.

Enhanced photolysis of tetracycline by Zn(II): Role of complexation

Zn(II) is a necessary additive during antibiotic production and aquaculture, leading to the coexistence of Zn(II) and antibiotics in aquatic environment, especially in receiving waters of pharmaceutical and aquaculture wastewater. However, the roles of Zn(II) in the photochemical behavior of antibiotics are still not clear, which limits the understanding of the fate of antibiotic in nature. In this study, tetracycline (TC) was selected as typical antibiotic to evaluate the effect of Zn(II) on antibiotic photolysis. The removal of TC was accelerated by 22.75 % with TC:Zn(II) molar ratio at 1:5. The mechanism of Zn(II)-induced TC photolysis was explored via reactive oxygen species (ROS) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation for the first time. Zn(II) could enhance the formation of TC excited states and further produce more singlet oxygen (12.54 % higher than control group) to promote indirect photolysis. Besides, Zn(II) could react with TC via complexation, and the complex was more vulnerable to attack by reactive oxygen species due to more active sites. Furthermore, the structure and toxicity of intermediates were identified with mass spectrometer, T.E.S.T. and ECOSAR software. Zn(II) hardly changed the degradation path of TC, and TC was mainly degraded via ring opening, demethylation, deamidation, and hydrogen abstraction with more toxic intermediates than the parent molecule. This work is significant to better understand the environmental fate of antibiotics, and also provides new insight into wastewater treatment in the pharmaceutical and aquaculture industry.

Photophysical properties of Radachlorin photosensitizer in solutions of different pH, viscosity and polarity

We present a thorough experimental investigation of fluorescence properties of Radachlorin photosensitizer in solutions of different acidity, viscosity and polarity. Experiments were performed using time-resolved fluorescence lifetime imaging and time-resolved analysis of polarized fluorescence. Variations of solution acidity resulted in considerable changes of Radachlorin fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime in the pH range from 4 to 7, but did not affect the rotational diffusion time, and almost did not change the quantum yield and characteristic times of singlet oxygen phosphorescence. Variations of solution polarity and viscosity were achieved by changing ethanol or methanol fraction in aqueous solution. The decrease of solution polarity resulted in nonlinear rise of Radachlorin fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime up to alcohol concentration of 50%-65%, as well as in considerable rise of singlet oxygen quantum yield and significant changes in characteristic times of its phosphorescence. Variations of solution viscosity resulted in changes of rotational diffusion time of Radachlorin molecules, which appeared to be in perfect correlation with methanol solution viscosity. Good correspondence with ethanol solution viscosity was observed only up to 50% alcohol fraction. Deviations of rotational diffusion time of Radachlorin molecules from direct proportionality with solution viscosity at higher ethanol concentrations were suggested to be due to different solvation conditions. The data obtained can give important reference points for analysis of microenvironment of Radachlorin molecules, their intracellular localization and performance in singlet oxygen generation.

Unraveling kinetic and synergistic effects during ultrasound-enhanced carbocatalysis for water remediation as a function of ultrasonic frequency

The ability of the ultrasound (US) combined with peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and a carbonaceous material (BC) was evaluated in the degradation of a model pollutant (acetaminophen, ACE). The US/BC/PMS system was compared with other possible systems (US, oxidation by PMS, BC adsorption, BC/PMS, US/PMS, and US/BC. The effect of the ultrasonic frequency (40, 375, and 1135 kHz) on the kinetics and synergy of the ACE removal was evaluated. In the US system, kinetics was favored at 375 kHz due to the increased production of hydroxyl radicals (HO•), but this did not improve in the US/PMS and US/BC systems. However, synergistic and antagonistic effects were observed at the low and high frequencies where the production of radicals is less efficient but there is an activation of PMS through mechanical effects. US/BC/PMS at 40 kHz was the most efficient system obtaining ∼95% ACE removal (40 μM) in the first 10 min of treatment, and high synergy (S = 10.30). This was promoted by disaggregation of the carbonaceous material, increasing the availability of catalytic sites where PMS is activated. The coexistence of free-radical and non-radical pathways was analyzed. Singlet oxygen (1O2) played the dominant role in degradation, while HO• and sulfate radicals (SO4•-), scarcely generated at low frequency, play a minimum role. Performance in hospital wastewater (HWW), urine, and seawater (SW) evidenced the competition of organic matter by BC active sites and reactive species and the removal enhancement when Cl- is present. Besides, toxicity decreased by ∼20% after treatment, being the system effective after three cycles of reuse.

Efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate by Fe single-atom: The key role of Fe-pyrrolic nitrogen coordination in generating singlet oxygen and high-valent Fe species

Nitrogen-doped carbon matrix single-atom catalysts (SACs) for the efficient removal of organic pollutants have attracted widespread attention. However, the ligand structure and the origin of the high activity between nitrogen species and single-atoms remain elusive. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon matrix iron single-atom catalysts (Fe/NC-SACs) that exhibit high catalytic reactivity (98.2% SMX degradation in 5 min), broad pH resistance (pH 3.0-11.1), high stability, and sustainable water treatment capacity are reported. High-valent iron (Fe IV=O) and singlet oxygen (1O2) were the reactive oxygen species observed. The electrochemical results demonstrated the generation of catalyst-PMS complexes. The DFT calculations revealed that Fe-pyrrolic N4 was the best ligand for PMS, exhibiting the highest adsorption energy, bond length variation and electron transfer capacity. The central Fe single atom and the carbon electrons adjacent to the pyrrolic N were the reactive sites of the PMS. The main source of 1O2 was the oxidation of PMS. This work provides guidance for the discovery of high-performance catalysts and provides a single-atom catalyst that can be used for practical environmental purification.

Enhanced electron-transfer for peroxymonosulfate activation by Ni single sites adjacent to Ni nanoparticles

Oriented generation of specific reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been challenging in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In this work, we constructed a multifunctional catalyst composed of Ni NPs embedded in N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) with exposed Ni single-atom sites (Ni-NCNTs). The Ni-N4 single sites adjacent to the Ni NPs are more efficient for PMS adsorption and activation, resulting in enhanced production of singlet oxygen (1O2). More interesting, we demonstrated that the superoxide anion radical (O2•-) was generated from 1O2 reduction via the electron transfer from the graphitic-N sites of Ni-NCNTs rather than from O2 reduction or PMS decomposition as reported in previous studies. Thus, Ni-NCNTs can act as both electron acceptor and donor to trigger the cascade production of 1O2 and O2•-, respectively, leading to fast and selective degradation of aqueous organic pollutants. The graphitic-N adjacent to the aromatic π-conjugation of NCNTs facilitated chemisorption of 1O2 onto NCNTs via the strong π*-π interactions, and more importantly, donated the lone pair electrons to trigger the reduction of 1O2 to O2•-. This study unravels the mechanisms for enhanced production of ROS in the nanoconfined Fenton-like systems and shed new light on the application of multifunctional nanocatalyst for rapid wastewater decontamination.

The activation mechanism of peroxymonosulfate and peroxydisulfate by modified hydrochar: Based on the multiple active sites formed by N and Fe

Modified hydrochar (NHC@Fe), with multiple functional groups and transition metal oxide-containing surface, was successfully synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. The differences in its catalytic activity for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation were studied in detail. Experimental and DFT studies showed that abundant active sites, namely, transition metals and functional groups on NHC@Fe provided multiple effective pathways for the activation of persulfate (PS). The NHC@Fe/PMS and NHC@Fe/PDS systems could degrade about 80% of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) in 120 min and were found to be better than those modified by iron or nitrogen alone. This emphasized the advantage of N-Fe co-modification in persulfate activation. Although the Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle accelerated the activation, the activation of PMS mainly relied on Fe3+, whereas that of PDS mainly relied on Fe2+. Moreover, Fe-N, pyrrolic N, pyridine N, C-O, and O-CO groups also played a key role in the activation process, but the dominant action sites were not the same. Multiple free radicals, such as SO4•-, •OH, O2•-, and 1O2 were generated in PMS and PDS activation systems. 1O2 induced non-free radical pathway was mainly involved in the degradation of TC in both activation systems, but the generation pathway of 1O2 was more direct and rapid in the PDS system. This study provides detailed DFT models of the active sites activated by PMS and PDS and discusses the activation pathways of PMS and PDS along with the similarities and differences in ROS reaction mechanisms.

A novel DBD/VUV/PMS process for efficient sulfadiazine degradation in wastewater: Singlet oxygen-dominated nonradical oxidation

In this study, a novel process of dielectric barrier discharge plasma/vacuum ultraviolet/peroxymonosulfate (DBD/VUV/PMS) for the nonradical-dominated degradation of sulfadiazine (SDZ) was investigated. The hybrid system has significant synergistic effects, with 95.5% SDZ and 68.3% TOC removal within 10 min. The activation efficiency of DBD/VUV (69.0%) on PMS via multipath was 2.07 times higher than that of single DBD (33.3%) under alkaline conditions. Electron paramagnetic resonance analyses and trapping experiments showed 1O2 was the primary active substance in the DBD/VUV/PMS process. The predominant role of 1O2 revealed that SDZ removal mainly followed the nonradical reaction pathway, contrary to the previously reported non-thermal plasma (NTP)-based radical-dominated process. Multiple spectroscopy analysis showed the efficient degradation process of SDZ. Unlike the radical attack sites, the SDZ transformation pathway by nonradical 1O2 was probably initiated by an aniline ring site attack based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and product analyses. The DBD/VUV/PMS process reduced energy consumption by 69% compared to DBD. Finally, the evaluation of ecotoxicity and PMS utilization demonstrated the advantages and application prospects of the DBD/VUV/PMS process. This research developed a new nonradical-dominated pathway for antibiotic degradation by the photo/plasma/persulfate process.

Highly dispersed Fe7S8 anchored on sp2/sp3 hybridized carbon boosting peroxymonosulfate activation for enhanced EOCs elimination though singlet oxygen-dominated nonradical pathway

The synergistic effect of carbon materials with high sp2/sp3 hybridized carbon ratio and metal materials can enhance the efficiency of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) based advanced oxidation processes. In this study, a composite of highly dispersed Fe7S8 anchored on sp2/sp3 hybridized carbon (Fe7S8@HC) was developed by a facile synthesis for PMS activation. Within 10 min, the removal efficiency of the target pollutant doxycycline (DOX) could reach ca. 96 % in optimal Fe7S8@HC/PMS system through a 1O2-dominated non-radical pathway. Correlation mechanism analysis revealed that thiophene S, sp2/sp3 ratio and Fe(II) were critical factors for elongating of the O-O bond of PMS. Moreover, the Fe7S8@HC/PMS system exhibited favorable adaptability to interference such as common inorganic anions, humic acid and pH changes and could effectively remove various organic pollutants with low ionization potential. Moreover, the system maintained high DOX removal efficiency by running 30 cycles in a continuous flow reactor. Finally, susceptible sites of DOX and four degradation pathways were proposed by density functional theory calculation and LC-MS detection. This work not only offered new insights into the design of high-performance catalysts combining metal and biomass-based carbon materials, but also provided technical support for the remediation of water bodies containing emerging organic contaminants.

Cobalt(II) mediated calcium sulfite activation for efficient oxidative decontamination in waters: Performance, kinetics and mechanism

To overcome the drawback that excess SO32- from soluble Na2SO3 captures the generated reactive intermediates in sulfite (S(IV))-based advanced oxidation processes (AOP), CaSO3 of the ability to slowly release SO32- is selected as an alternative S(IV) source to establish an enduring S(IV)-based AOP with Co(II). Herein, the Co(II)/CaSO3 process triggers a much better ofloxacin (OFL) degradation than the Co(II)/Na2SO3 process (degradation rate constant: 12.1 > 3.18 mM-1 min-1). The mechanism investigation corroborates that the Co(II) mediated CaSO3 activation follows a Fenton-like process (complexation followed by intramolecular electron transfer). Apart from the conventional sulfate radical (SO4•-), Co(IV) species and singlet oxygen (1O2) are also certifiably involved in Co(II)/CaSO3 process, and their role and formation mechanisms are elucidated comprehensively. Further, the proposed Co(II)/CaSO3 process exhibits an excellent tolerance to complex water matrices (e.g., background ions and humic acid), suggesting its practical application potential for various contaminants abatement in actual wastewater.

Singlet oxygen-dominated peroxymonosulfate activation by layered crednerite for organic pollutants degradation in high salinity wastewater

Advanced oxidation processes have been widely studied for organic pollutants treatment in water, but the degradation performance of radical-dominated pathway was severely inhibited by the side reactions between the anions and radicals, especially in high salinity conditions. Here, a singlet oxygen (1O2)-dominated non-radical process was developed for organic pollutants degradation in high salinity wastewater, with layered crednerite (CuMnO2) as catalysts and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as oxidant. Based on the experiments and density functional theory calculations, 1O2 was the dominating reactive species and the constructed Cu-O-Mn with electron-deficient Mn captured electron from PMS promoting the generation of 1O2. The rapid degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) was achieved by CuMnO2/PMS system, which was 5-fold and 21-fold higher than that in Mn2O3/PMS system and Cu2O/PMS system. The CuMnO2/PMS system shown prominent BPA removal performance under high salinity conditions, prominent PMS utilization efficiency, outstanding total organic carbon removal rate, wide range of applicable pH and good stability. This work unveiled that the 1O2-dominated non-radical process of CuMnO2/PMS system overcame the inhibitory effect of anions in high salinity conditions, which provided a promising technique to remove organic pollutants from high saline wastewater.

Antiviral activity of porphyrins and porphyrin-like compounds against tick-borne encephalitis virus: Blockage of the viral entry/fusion machinery by photosensitization-mediated destruction of the viral envelope

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), the causative agent of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), is a medically important flavivirus endemic to the European-Asian continent. Although more than 12,000 clinical cases are reported annually worldwide, there is no anti-TBEV therapy available to treat patients with TBE. Porphyrins are macrocyclic molecules consisting of a planar tetrapyrrolic ring that can coordinate a metal cation. In this study, we investigated the cytotoxicity and anti-TBEV activity of a large series of alkyl- or (het)aryl-substituted porphyrins, metalloporphyrins, and chlorins and characterized their molecular interactions with the viral envelope in detail. Our structure-activity relationship study showed that the tetrapyrrole ring is an essential structural element for anti-TBEV activity, but that the presence of different structurally distinct side chains with different lengths, charges, and rigidity or metal cation coordination can significantly alter the antiviral potency of porphyrin scaffolds. Porphyrins were demonstrated to interact with the TBEV lipid membrane and envelope protein E, disrupt the TBEV envelope and inhibit the TBEV entry/fusion machinery. The crucial mechanism of the anti-TBEV activity of porphyrins is based on photosensitization and the formation of highly reactive singlet oxygen. In addition to blocking viral entry and fusion, porphyrins were also observed to interact with RNA oligonucleotides derived from TBEV genomic RNA, indicating that these compounds could target multiple viral/cellular structures. Furthermore, immunization of mice with porphyrin-inactivated TBEV resulted in the formation of TBEV-neutralizing antibodies and protected the mice from TBEV infection. Porphyrins can thus be used to inactivate TBEV while retaining the immunogenic properties of the virus and could be useful for producing new inactivated TBEV vaccines.

Heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of antiviral drug didanosine mediated by rose bengal and TiO2 nanoparticles

There is a great concern among the researcher to remove the problem of the persistent organic pollutants in wastewater. Pharmaceutical agrochemical and personal care products are generally considered Persistent organic pollutants. Therefore, it is a matter of concern to develop new techniques how to remove these pollutants safely at low cost. This study mainly focuses on the commonly used antiviral drug didanosine and one most commonly used dye rose bengal. In this study, an organic dye rose bengal and TiO2 nanoparticles have been used in combination with UV light to achieve the photodegradation of selected pharmaceutical products and the dye was also degraded by using TiO2 Nanoparticles. The formation of three oxidation products was detected by using a very popular separation technique thin layer and column chromatography. The isolated photoproduct was characterized by using advanced characterization techniques like FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), UV Spectroscopy, and Proton and 13C NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy). The role of singlet oxygen as an active species in this reaction was confirmed by using D2O as a reaction medium. The role of singlet oxygen in this photochemical reaction was also established by the addition of sodium azide. The TiO2 nanophotocatalyst efficiently degrade the didanosine and rose bengal in the presence of the UV light. In the TiO2-induced photocatalytic degradation of didanosine and dyes, the hydroxyl and superoxide radical anion play a prominent role. The finding of this manuscript is very useful to develop an efficient low-cost method for the treatment of wastewater contaminated by antiviral drugs, similar pharmaceutical products and dyes. This study was also very helpful to establish a plausible mechanism behind the phototoxicity of the didanosine.

Singlet Oxygen and Superoxide Anion Radical Detection by EPR Spin Trapping in Thylakoid Preparations

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced by energy transfer and electron transport in plant chloroplast thylakoids at non-toxic levels under normal growth conditions, but at threatening levels under adverse or fluctuating environmental conditions. Among chloroplast ROS, singlet oxygen and superoxide anion radical, respectively, produced by photosystem II (PSII) and PSI, are known to be the major ROS under several stress conditions. Both are very unlikely to diffuse out of chloroplasts, but they are instead capable of triggering ROS-mediated chloroplast operational retrograde signalling to activate defence gene expression in concert with hormones and other molecular compounds. Therefore, their detection, identification and localization in vivo or in biological preparations is a priority for a deeper understanding of their role in (concurrent) regulation of plant growth and defence responses. Here, we present two EPR spin traps, abbreviated as TEMPD-HCl and DEPMPO, to detect and identify ROS in complex systems, such as isolated thylakoids, together with some hints and cautions to perform reliable spin trapping experiments.

Singlet oxygen-mediated fluconazole degradation during the activation of chlorine dioxide with sulfite

Singlet oxygen (1O2)-mediated advanced oxidations have received considerable attention due to their strong capacity to resist the water matrix and high selectivity for organic pollutants. In this study, the activation of chlorine dioxide with sulfite (sulfite/ClO2 process) to effectively produce 1O2 was proposed to degrade fluconazole (FLC) and simultaneously control the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The results revealed that FLC could be rapidly degraded by 78.6 % within 10 s by the sulfite/ClO2 process. Radical quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements confirm that 1O2 produced by the cleavage of epoxides formed by the combination of triazole electron-rich groups in FLC with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was the main active species in the sulfite/ClO2 process. The degradation of FLC was favored under alkaline conditions because of the fast electron transfer rate at higher pH values. The presence of chloride (Cl-), bicarbonate (HCO3-), and humic acid (HA) hindered the degradation of FLC mainly because they compete with PMS for the electron-rich groups produced by the reaction. The degradation intermediates of FLC were identified by UPLC‒MS/MS, and their transformation pathways were deduced by the condensed Fukui function (CFF) theory. Using sulfite/ClO2 as a pretreatment process to treat real potable water, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and other intermediates may be produced via the carboxylation and carbonylation reactions mediated by 1O2, therefore promoting the formation of DBPs during the following chlorination. This study provided a new perspective that while 1O2 is effectively produced in the sulfite/ClO2 process for contaminant degradation, the formation of DBPs during subsequent chlorination should be cautioned.

Full-field exposure of larval zebrafish to narrow waveband LED light sources at defined power and energy for optogenetic applications

BACKGROUND

Optogenetic approaches in transparent zebrafish models have provided numerous insights into vertebrate neurobiology. The purpose of this study was to develop methods to activate light-sensitive transgene products simultaneously throughout an entire larval zebrafish.

NEW METHOD

We developed a LED illumination stand and microcontroller unit to expose zebrafish larvae reproducibly to full field illumination at defined wavelength, power, and energy.

RESULTS

The LED stand generated a sufficiently flat illumination field to expose multiple larval zebrafish to high power light stimuli uniformly, while avoiding sample bath warming. The controller unit allowed precise automated delivery of predetermined amounts of light energy at calibrated power. We demonstrated the utility of the approach by driving photoconversion of Kaede (398 nm), photodimerization of GAVPO (450 nm), and photoactivation of dL5**/MG2I (661 nm) in neurons throughout the CNS of larval zebrafish. Observed outcomes were influenced by both total light energy and its rate of delivery, highlighting the importance of controlling these variables to obtain reproducible results.

COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS

Our approach employs inexpensive LED chip arrays to deliver narrow-waveband light with a sufficiently flat illumination field to span multiple larval zebrafish simultaneously. Calibration of light power and energy are built into the workflow.

CONCLUSIONS

The LED illuminator and controller can be constructed from widely available materials using the drawings, instructions, and software provided. This approach will be useful for multiple optogenetic applications in zebrafish and other models.

Singlet Oxygen Detection by Chemiluminescence Probes in Living Cells

Singlet oxygen is a reactive oxygen species that causes oxidative damage to plant cells, but intriguingly it can also act as a signalling molecule to reprogram gene expression required to induce plant physiological/cellular responses. Singlet oxygen photosensitization in plants mainly occurs in chloroplasts after the molecular collision of ground-state molecular oxygen with triplet-excited-state chlorophyll. Singlet oxygen direct detection through phosphorescence emission in chloroplasts is a herculean task due to its extremely low luminescence quantum yield. Because of this, indirect alternative methods have been developed for its detection in biological systems, for example, by measuring the changes in the EPR signal or fluorescence intensity of singlet oxygen reaction-based probes. The singlet oxygen chemiluminescence (SOCL) is a chemiluminescence probe with high sensitivity and selectivity towards singlet oxygen and promising use to detect it in living cells without the inconvenience of low stability of the EPR signal of spin probes in the presence of redox compounds, spurious light scattering coming from the light source required for the excitation of fluorescence probes or the light emission of endogenous fluorescent molecules like chlorophyll in chloroplasts. The protocol presented in this chapter describes the first steps to characterizing singlet oxygen production within the biological system under study; this is accomplished through monitoring molecular oxygen consumption by SOCL using a Clark-type oxygen electrode and measuring the chemiluminescence generated by SOCL 1,2-dioxetane using a spectrofluorometer. For singlet oxygen detection within living cells, a version of SOCL with increased membrane permeability (SOCL-CPP) is described.

N, S, and Cl tri-doped carbon boost the switching of radical to non-radical pathway in Fenton-like reactions: Synergism of N species and defects

Heteroatom doping represents a promising strategy for enhancing the generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) during the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) using carbon-based catalysts; however, it remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we systematically controlled the structure of metal-free carbon-based materials by introducing different heteroatoms to investigate their efficacy in degrading organic pollutants in water via PMS activation. The results of reactive oxygen species detection showed that the dominant free radical in the four samples was different: CN (•SO4- and •OH), CNS (•O2-), CNCl (1O2), and CNClS (1O2). This led to the transformation of active species from free radicals to non-free radicals. The tri-doped carbons with nitrogen, sulfur, and chlorine (CNClS) exhibited exceptional performance in PMS activation and achieved a remarkable degradation efficiency of 95% within just 6 min for tetracycline. Moreover, a strong linear correlation was observed between the ratio of pyridine-N/graphite-N and ID/IG with the yield of 1O2, indicating that N species and defects play a crucial role in CNClS as they facilitate the transition from radical to non-radical pathways during PMS activation. These findings highlight the possibility that adjustable tri-heteroatom doping will expand the Fenton-like reaction for the treatment of actual wastewater.

Synergic vascular photodynamic activity by methylene blue-curcumin supramolecular assembly

A supramolecular assembly was obtained by combining methylene blue (MB) with a natural plant extract, curcumin (Curc), in a stoichiometric ratio of 1:4 in aqueous solution (90% PBS + 10% ethanol) at room temperature. The MB-Curc supramolecular assembly was evidenced by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies, and the stoichiometry and bonding constant were obtained using Cieleńs model. Its stability and photostability were evaluated by chromatographic analysis and UV-Vis absorption. The MB-Curc avoids the aggregation of both isolated compounds and efficiently produces singlet oxygen (ΦΔ= 0.52 ± 0.03). Its potential for photodynamic antiangiogenic treatments was evaluated through the vascular effect observed in chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. The results showed intense damage in CAM vascular network by MB-Curc after irradiation, which is higher than the effect of isolated compounds, indicating a synergistic vascular effect. This combination can be essential to prevent cancer revascularization after photodynamic application and improve the efficacy of this approach. The characteristics exhibited by MB-Curc make it a potential candidate for use in cancer treatments through photodynamic antiangiogenic therapy.
