Abstract
The valorization of renewable feedstock to produce a plethora of value-added products could promote the transition towards a circular bioeconomy. This study presents the development of cascade processes to bioconvert spent coffee grounds (SCGs) into microbial oil and carotenoids employing sustainable practices. The stepwise recovery of crude phenolic extract and coffee oil was carried out using green or recyclable solvents, i.e., aqueous ethanol and hexane. Palmitic acid (43.3%) and linoleic acid (38.9%) were the major fatty acids in the oil fraction of SCGs. The LC-MS analysis of crude phenolic extracts revealed that chlorogenic acid dominated (45.7%), while neochlorogenic acid was also detected in substantial amounts (24.0%). SCGs free of coffee oil and phenolic compounds were subjected to microwave-assisted pretreatment under different irradiations and solvents to enhance subsequent enzymatic saccharification. Microwave/water pretreatment at 400 W, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis with proteases, hemicellulases, and cellulases, at 50 g/L initial SCGs, led to satisfying overall yields of cellulose (75.4%), hemicellulose (50.3%), and holocellulose (55.3%). Mannan was the most extractable polysaccharide followed by galactan and arabinan. SCGs hydrolysate was used in fed-batch bioreactor fermentations with Rhodosporidium toruloides to produce 24.0 g/L microbial oil and carotenoids of 432.9 μg/g biomass.

Abstract
A novel ternary mixture of inexpensive and nutrient-rich agro-substrates comprising groundnut de-oiled cake, corn gluten meal, and soybean meal has been explored to enhance the L-asparaginase production in solid-state fermentation. To achieve the aim, a hybrid strategy was implemented by utilizing a combination of a mixture design and artificial neural networks. The study initiated with the judicious selection of the agro-substrates based on their low C/N content in comparison to the control using the CHNS elemental analysis. The mixture composition of soybean meal (49.0%), groundnut de-oiled cake (31.5%), and corn gluten meal (19.5%) were found optimum using the simplex lattice mixture design. The agro-industrial substrates mix revealed synergistic effects on the L-asparaginase production than either of the substrates alone. The maximum L-asparaginase activity of 141.45 ± 5.24 IU/gds was observed under the physical process conditions of 70% moisture content, autoclaving period of 30 min and 6.0 pH by adopting the machine learning-derived artificial neural network (ANN) methodology. The ANN modeling showed excellent prediction ability with a low mean squared error of 0.7, a low root mean squared error of 0.84, and a high value of 0.99 for regression coefficient. Moisture content (%) was assessed to be the most sensitive process parameter in the global sensitivity analysis. The net outcome from the two sequential optimization designs is the selection of the ideal mixture composition followed by the optimum physical process parameters. The application of the enzyme demonstrated significant cytotoxicity against leukemia cell line and therefore exhibited an anti-cancer effect. The present study reports a novel mixture combination and methodology that can be used to lower the cost and enhance the production of L-asparaginase using an agro-industrial substrate mixture.

Abstract
In the recent past, an increasing interest is mostly observed in using microwave and ultrasonic irradiation to aid the biological conversion of waste materials into value-added products. This study is focused on various individual impacts of microwaves and ultrasonic waves for the treatment of biomass before the synthesis of value-added products. Following, a comprehensive review of the mechanisms governing microwaves and ultrasonication as the treatment methods, their effects on biomass disruption, solubilization of organic matter, modification of the crystalline structure, enzymatic hydrolysis and production of reducing sugars was performed. However, based on the lab-scale experiments evaluated, microwaves and ultrasonication were studied to be economically and energetically ineffective despite their beneficial effects on the waste biomass. This article reviews some of the difficulties associated with using microwaves and ultrasonic irradiation for the efficient processing of waste biomasses and identified some potential directions for future study.

Abstract
Microalgae are mostly phototrophic microorganisms present worldwide, showcasing great adaptability to their environment. They are known for producing essential metabolites such as carotenoids, chlorophylls, sterols, lipids, and many more. This study discusses the possibility of the mixotrophic abilities of microalgae in the presence of food waste oils. The utilization of food waste materials is becoming more popular as a research subject as its production grows every year, increasing the environmental burden. In this work, waste frying oil and coffee oil were tested for the first time as a nutrition source for microalgae cultivation. Waste frying oil is produced in large amounts all over the world and its simple purification is one of its greatest advantages as it only needs to be filtered from leftover food pieces. Coffee oil is extracted from waste spent coffee grounds as a by-product. The waste frying oil and coffee oil were added to the basic algal media as an alternative source of carbon. As a pilot study for further experimentation, the effect of oil in the medium, algal adaptability, and capability to survive were tested within these experiments. The growth and production characteristics of four algae and cyanobacteria strains were tested, of which the strain Desmodesmus armatus achieved exceptional results of chlorophyll (8.171 ± 0.475 mg/g) and ubiquinone (5.708 ± 0.138 mg/g) production. The strain Chlamydomonas reindhartii showed exceptional lipid accumulation in the range of 30-46% in most of the samples.

Abstract
Large amounts of secondary pollutants are released during traditional composting, and rapid fermentation is desirable for the stabilization of food wastes. Food wastes were mixed with rice husk, placed in a bioreactor, and stirred continuously to achieve high-temperature fermentation for 14 h. The transformations of the mixtures were analyzed using elemental and spectral analysis combined with kinetic equations and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy. The carbohydrates, proteins, and aliphatic compounds of food waste were degraded after 4 h of fermentation. Transformations of dissolved organic and sulfur- and nitrogen-containing substances followed first-order kinetic equations with reaction rate constants of 0.142 h-1, 0.098 h-1, and 0.016 h-1, respectively. Organic matter conversion was in the following order: aliphatic → protein → carbohydrate and followed the order, acrylamide C → O-alkyl C → anomeric C at the molecular level. The fermentation process was characterized by the increase in protein- and fulvic-like compounds. Fulvic acid substances gradually accumulated during the late fermentation period. Thus, dissolved organic matter components were gradually transformed into humic substances with increasing fermentation time. The sequence of transformation during the fermentation process was, tyrosine-like → tryptophan-like → fulvic-like substances. Humification mainly occurred in the mature stage of composting; therefore, it was verified that the food waste was stabilized by a 14-h fermentation.

Abstract
The mixed treatment of municipal sludge and food waste can generate renewable energy, solve the environmental and economic challenges caused by this waste, and has attracted significant research attention. Using environmentally friendly anaerobic co-digestion of municipal sludge and food waste can improve the effects of anaerobic mono-digestion and produce more biogas. However, as the municipal sludge and food waste managers are different, balancing the interests of both managers is needed to encourage anaerobic co-digestion development. By fully considering the interests of the local authority, the waste water treatment plants, and the food waste anaerobic digestion treatment plants, this paper developed a bi-level optimization approach based on Stackelberg equilibrium theory to resolve the conflicts between the different stakeholders, in which uncertain parameters were used to describe the uncertainties. The proposed model was then applied to a real case in Chongqing, China, to test its practicality, and scenario analyses under different policy parameter values were conducted to provide guidance for local authorities, waste water treatment plants, and food waste treatment plants. The proposed approach was found to provide balanced strategies for all three stakeholders, increase the renewable energy output of municipal sludge and food waste treatment 14.2 times, and reduce carbon emissions by 50%, thereby protecting the environment and achieving a circular economy.

Abstract
Improper disposal of animal waste is responsible for several environmental problems, causing eutrophication of lakes and rivers, nutrient overload in the soil, and the spread of pathogenic organisms. Despite the potential to cause adverse ecological damage, animal waste can be a valuable source of resources if incorporated into a circular concept. In this sense, new approaches focused on recovery and reuse as substitutes for traditional processes based on removing contaminants in animal manure have gained attention from the scientific community. Based on this, the present work reviewed the literature on the subject, performing a bibliometric and scientometric analysis of articles published in peer-reviewed journals between 1991 and 2021. Of the articles analyzed, the main issues addressed were nitrogen and phosphorus recovery, energy generation, high-value-added products, and water reuse. The energy use of livestock waste stands out since it is characterized as a consolidated solution, unlike other routes still being developed, presenting the economic barrier as the main limiting factor. Analyzing the trend of technological development through the S curve, it was possible to verify that the circular economy in the management of animal waste will enter the maturation phase as of 2036 and decline in 2056, which demonstrates opportunities for the sector's development, where animal waste can be an economic agent, promoting a cleaner and more viable product for a sustainable future.
