Catalytic reduction of organic pollutants, antibacterial and antifungal activities of AgNPs@CuO nanoparticles-loaded mesoporous silica

Chitosan-sunflower meal biochar hydrogel incorporated with green synthesized NiO nanoparticles for enhanced catalytic reduction of anthropogenic water pollutants

Anthropogenic activities have been one of the crucial driving factors for water pollution globally, thereby warranting a sustainable strategy for its redressal. In this study, we have developed a hydrogel-biochar nanocomposite for catalytic reduction of water pollutants. To begin with, green synthesis of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) was accomplished from waste kinnow peel extract via the environmentally benign microwave method. The formation of NiO NPs was affirmed from different analytical techniques namely ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The FESEM images revealed spherical nature of NiO NPs. The average particle size was found to be 15.61 nm from XRD data. A novel hydrogel-biochar nanocomposite comprising the green NiO NPs, sunflower meal biochar and chitosan was prepared (Cs-biochar@ NiO) and explored as a nanocatalyst towards catalytic reduction of pollutants such as 4-nitrophenol, potassium hexacyanoferrate (III) and organic dyes methyl orange (MO), Congo red (CR), methylene blue (MB) in the presence of a reducing agent, i.e. NaBH4. Under optimized conditions, the reduction reactions were completed by 120 s and 60 s for 4-NP and potassium hexacyanoferrate (III) respectively and the rate constants were estimated to be 0.044 s-1 and 0.110 s-1. The rate of reduction was found to be faster for the dyes and the respective rate constants were 0.213 s-1 for MO, 0.213 s-1 for CR and 0.135 s-1 for MB. The assessment of the nanocatalyst in the reduction of binary dye systems depicted its selectivity towards the anionic dyes CR and MO. The nanocatalyst displayed effective reduction of dyes in real-water samples collected from different sources. Taken altogether, this study validates the design of sustainable hydrogel-biochar nanocatalyst for the efficient reduction of hazardous anthropogenic water pollutants.

Harnessing the potential of bimetallic nanoparticles: Exploring a novel approach to address antimicrobial resistance

The growing global importance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in public health has prompted the creation of innovative approaches to combating the issue. In this study, the promising potential of bimetallic nanoparticles (BMNPs) was investigated as a novel weapon against AMR. This research begins by elaborating on the gravity of the AMR problem, outlining its scope in terms of the effects on healthcare systems, and stressing the urgent need for novel solutions. Because of their unusual features and wide range of potential uses, bimetallic nanoparticles (BMNPs), which are tiny particles consisting of two different metal elements, have attracted a lot of interest in numerous fields. This review article provides a comprehensive analysis of the composition, structural characteristics, and several synthesis processes employed in the production of BMNPs. Additionally, it delves into the unique properties and synergistic effects that set BMNPs apart from other materials. This review also focuses on the various antimicrobial activities shown by bimetallic nanoparticles, such as the rupturing of microbial cell membranes, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the regulation of biofilm formation. An extensive review of in vitro studies confirms the remarkable antibacterial activity of BMNPs against a variety of pathogens and sheds light on the dose-response relationship. The efficacy and safety of BMNPs in practical applications are assessed in this study. It also delves into the synergistic effects of BMNPs with traditional antimicrobial drugs and their ability to overcome multidrug resistance, providing mechanistic insight into these phenomena. Wound healing, infection prevention, and antimicrobial coatings on medical equipment are only some of the clinical applications of BMNPs that are examined, along with the difficulties and possible rewards of clinical translation. This review covers nanoparticle-based antibacterial regulation and emerging uses. The essay concludes with prospects for hybrid systems, site-specific targeting, and nanoparticle-mediated gene and drug delivery. In summary, bimetallic nanoparticles have surfaced as a potential solution, offering the public a more promising and healthier future.

Poultices as biofilms of titanium dioxide nanoparticles/carboxymethyl cellulose/Phytagel for cleaning of infected cotton paper by Aspergillus sydowii and Nevskia terrae

In this study, TiO2 nanoparticle (TiO2NP)-coated film was produced to protect manuscripts against microorganisms using ecofriendly benign materials. As a result, a simple method was created that uses poultice biofilm made of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and Phytagel plant cell (PGP) loaded with TiO2NPs to preserve manuscripts against microbes in an environmentally responsible way. Three volumes (1, 2, 4 mL) of TiO2NPs were put into a biofilm combination to produce the poultices known as CMC/PGP/TiO2-1, CMC/PGP/TiO2-2, and CMC/PGP/TiO2-3. The synthesized TiO2NPs were nearly spherical in shape, small in size (98 nm), and stable (zeta potential value - 33 mV). The results showed that the unique deposition of TiO2NPs on the biofilm surface gave the produced films loaded with TiO2NPs a rough structure. The highest values of mechanical characteristics were determined to be in CMC/PGP/TiO2-1 with values of 25.4 g, 6.6 MPa, and 11.4%, for tensile strength, elongation at break, and tear strength, respectively. Based on molecular identification, the fungus Aspergillus sydowii and the bacterium Nevskia terrae, with accession numbers MG991624 and AB806800, respectively, were isolated and identified from an antiquated manuscript formed from cellulosic fibers. Before the experiments, the produced cotton paper samples were aged, and then, one group was infected for 6 months by A. sydowii and the second group with N. terrae. Following the preparation of a CMC/PGP biofilm loaded with various volumes of TiO2NPs, poultices were applied to infected cotton paper in order to clean it. The infected cotton paper was placed inside the sandwich-like poultices that were created. The poultice CMC/PGP/TiO2-2 demonstrated potential for preventing the growth of A. sydowii and N. terrae-infected cotton paper, when the fibers were saved, cleaned, and coated with CMC/PGP/TiO2-2 after absorbing the fungus and the bacterium and exhibiting exceptional antimicrobial activities. Finally, the novel biofilms have demonstrated their capacity to lessen microbial contamination of cotton paper. In order to generalize the usage of these poultices, it is also advised that they be produced on a large scale and tested on a variety of organic materials in the future.
