Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Sarcopenia, defined as a muscle mass loss and function, is increasingly recognized in pediatric populations, particularly in childhood obesity. Therefore, it is necessary to have measurements that can distinguish between muscle and fat mass. Methods of body composition such as Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) provide accurate assessments of body composition, but they are resource-intensive and impractical for routine monitoring in clinical or community settings. To address this, handgrip strength (HGS) may be used for assessing muscle mass. This study investigates the association between muscle mass and HGS in children aged 6-10 years. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 110 participants was conducted with children aged 6-10 years who could follow instructions in English, lay still for 6-7 min, and had not entered puberty. Children with disabilities that affected muscle mass or hand strength were excluded. Height, weight, mid-upper arm circumference, lean body mass (LBM), fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), and bone mineral density (BMD) were measured. Pearson correlations between all body composition measurements and HGS were conducted. The best predictors of muscle mass were determined using stepwise analysis. RESULTS A significant correlation between HGS and fat-free mass index (FFMI) (R = 0.39) (p < 0.001) among children aged 6-10 years and lean body mass index (LBMI) (R = 0.42) (p = 0.005) in children aged 8-10 years old was found. HGS with BMI (p < 0.0001) were the best predictors of FFMI and LBMI. CONCLUSION HGS was associated with muscle mass and may provide insight on body composition changes in children. Integrating HGS with BMI into routine clinical practice could enhance comprehensive evaluation of body composition.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to use the Mendelian randomization study method to verify the causal relationship between grip strength and bone mineral density (BMD) in different ages and different parts of the body. MATERIALS AND METHODS The analysis was based on pooled data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Hand grip strength (right) was used as the exposure variable and total body bone mineral density (BMD) of different age groups was used as the outcome variable. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms highly correlated with exposure variables were used as instrumental variables. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the primary analysis method, and the Mendelian randomization Egger (MR-Egger) regression and weighted median methods were used as supplementary evidence for the IVW results. Horizontal pleiotropy and heterogeneity tests were conducted to ensure the stability of the results. RESULTS Analyzing the GWAS data on osteoporosis as the outcome variable, the IVW analysis showed that osteoporosis risk was associated with decreased grip strength in the 45-60 age group and the risk of declining lumbar spine BMD was associated with decreased grip strength. However, there was no significant correlation between the risk of osteoporosis in other age groups and changes in grip strength. CONCLUSION A causal relationship exists between decreased grip strength and osteoporosis risk in people aged 45-60 years. The risk of BMD declining in the lumbar spine was associated with reduced grip strength.

Abstract
In an increasingly aging and overweight population, osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are major public health concerns. T2DM patients experience prejudicial effects on their bone health, affecting their physical capacity. Exercise in hypoxia (EH) and a low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) have been suggested for therapeutic benefits in T2DM, improving bone mineral content (BMC) and glycemic control. This study investigated the effects of EH combined with an LCD on body composition and functional and physiologic capacity in T2DM patients. Older T2DM patients (n = 42) were randomly assigned to the following groups: (1) control group: control diet + exercise in normoxia; (2) EH group: control diet + EH; (3) intervention group: LCD + EH. Cardiopulmonary tests (BRUCE protocol), body composition (DEXA), and functional capacity (6MWT, handgrip strength) were evaluated. Body mass index (kg/m2) and body fat (%) decreased in all groups (p < 0.001). BMC (kg) increased in all groups (p < 0.001) and was significantly higher in the EH and EH + LCD groups (p < 0.001). VO2peak improved in all groups (p < 0.001), but more so in the hypoxia groups (p = 0.019). Functional capacity was increased in all groups (p < 0.001), but more so in the EH group in 6MWT (p = 0.030). EH with and without an LCD is a therapeutic strategy for improving bone mass in T2DM, which is associated with cardiorespiratory and functional improvements.

Abstract
The study aims to investigate the independent association of muscle mass (MM) and bone mineral content (BMC) in the performance of the handgrip strength (HGS) test and whether there is effect modification by sex and age. In 12,491 participants from the ELSA-Brasil we estimated the associations between MM, BMC and HGS using linear regression models. All the analyses were performed for total population, also stratified for sex and age. For total population an interaction term was included between each explanatory variable of interest with sex and age to verify the presence of effect modification. We observed that the higher quintiles of MM and BMC were associated to an increasing in the mean of HGS compared to the first quintile, with greater magnitudes in men compared to women, also adults compared to elderly. When we estimated the independent effect of each exposure of interest, MM showed stronger effect in HGS in women, men and adults then BMC. In conclusion, we observed that higher amounts of MM and BMC are associated with higher HGS, regardless of sociodemographic characteristics, health conditions and lifestyle, with this effect being greater in men and adults.

Abstract
The relationship between calcium intake and bone strength in older Asian individuals, including Japanese, is controversial; therefore, we herein investigated this relationship in older Japanese populations. We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 314 participants older than 65 years who voluntarily participated in a medical examination and responded to questionnaires. The osteo-sono assessment index (OSI) measured at the right calcaneus using a quantitative ultrasonic device was used as an indicator of bone strength. The daily dietary intake of calcium was assessed using a brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire. A two-way analysis of covariance revealed a significant interaction between sex and calcium intake on the OSI (p < 0.01). A multiple regression analysis showed a positive correlation between calcium intake and the OSI in males (p < 0.01), but not females (p = 0.27). In females, grip strength divided by body weight positively correlated with the OSI (p = 0.04). The present results suggest that a higher calcium intake contributes to bone strength in older Japanese males. Although a higher grip strength may contribute to bone strength in females, the potential of estrogen as a confounding factor needs to be considered.
