Chlorophenols in environment: Recent updates on pretreatment and analysis methods

Chlorophenols (CPs) are widely used in industries such as petrochemicals, insecticides, pharmaceuticals, synthetic dyes and wood preservatives. However, owing to the improper discharge and disposal, they have become major contaminants that are ubiquitously distributed in water, soil, and sewage sediments, posing a significant threat to ecosystems and human health. Consequently, accurate, sensitive and effective pretreatment and analysis methods for CPs are urgently required and have been actively explored in recent years. This review encompasses the pretreatment and detection methods for CPs in environmental samples from 2010 to 2024. The pretreatment methods for CPs primarily include solid-phase extraction, liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase microextraction, liquid-phase microextraction, and QuEChERS. These methods are evolving towards more effective and environmentally friendly technologies, such as the miniaturization and automation of equipment, the development of innovative materials (including graphene, molecularly imprinted polymers, layered double hydroxides, porous organic polymers, and porous carbon), and the use of green solvents like deep eutectic solvents. Detection methods emphasize liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, sensors, and capillary electrophoresis. Advances in chromatographic columns, novel ion sources, and high-resolution mass spectrometry have significantly improved detection performance. In addition, the pros and cons of diverse techniques, critical comments and future perspectives are elaborated.

Recent Advances and Biomedical Applications of Peptide-Integrated Conducting Polymers

Conducting polymers (CPs) are of great interests to researchers around the world in biomedical applications owing to their unique electrical and mechanical properties. Besides, they are easy to fabricate and have long-term stability. These features make CPs a powerful building block of modern biomaterials. Peptide functionalization has been a versatile tool for the development of CP-based biomaterials. With the aid of peptide modifications, the biocompatibility, target selectivity, and cellular interactions of CPs can be greatly improved. Reflecting these aspects, an increasing number of studies on peptide-integrated conducting polymers have been reported recently. In this review, various kinds of peptide immobilization strategies on CPs are introduced. Moreover, the aims of peptide modification are discussed in three aspects: enhancing the specific selectivity, avoiding nonspecific adhesion, and mimicking the environment of extracellular matrix. We highlighted recent studies in the applications of peptide-integrated CPs in electrochemical sensors, antifouling surfaces, and conductive biointerfaces. These studies have shown great potentials from the integration of peptide and CPs as a versatile platform for advanced biological and clinical applications in the near future.

Fabrication of Highly Ordered Ag/TiO2 Nanopore Array as a Self-Cleaning and Recycling SERS Substrate

Silver nanoparticles deposited on a titania nanopore array (Ag/TiO2 NPA) has been designed as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for sensitive and recycling application of organic molecule detection. A TiO2 NPA was fabricated by a surface oxidization reaction of a titanium sheet by a double anodization process. A Ag/TiO2 NPA was then formed by depositing silver nanoparticles onto the TiO2 NPA by a cycling chemical reduction deposition process. The Ag/TiO2 NPA has a uniform mono-layer dispersion of Ag nanoparticles with a size of 30–50 nm on TiO2 nanopores with a diameter of 100–110 nm. The Ag/TiO2 NPA SERS substrate could facilitate interfacial adsorption of Rhodamine 6G (R6G), which achieves a sensitive detection limit of 10−8 M R6G through SERS spectrum measurement. The Ag/TiO2 NPA SERS substrate achieves an analytical enhancement factor value of 2.6 × 105. The Ag/TiO2 NRA could promote the UV light-excited photocatalytic degradation reaction of R6G adsorbed on its surface which gives rise to a refreshed Ag/TiO2 NRA under UV irradiation for 60 min and accordingly behave as a self-cleaning and recycling SERS substrate. The Ag/TiO2 NPA exhibits a much higher R6G degradation reaction rate constant (0.05764 min−1) than the TiO2 NPA (0.02600 min−1), indicating its superior photocatalytic activity and self-cleaning activity. The refreshed Ag/TiO2 NPA was able to be recycled for the Raman detection of R6G, maintaining a high stability, reproducibility, and cyclability. The highly ordered Ag/TiO2 NPA with well controlled Ag nanoparticle dispersion and TiO2 nanopore shape could act as a suitable SERS substrate for recycling and self-cleaning application for stable and sensitive molecule detection.
