Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to determine whether: 1) sleep quality was associated with overall survival (OS) among a heterogeneous sample of cancer survivors; 2) this association differed per cancer diagnosis; 3) aspects of sleep quality (e.g., sleep latency, daytime dysfunction) were associated with OS among a subsample of colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors; and 4) adjustment for depressive symptoms changed these associations. METHODS Several cohorts from the population-based PROFILES registry, including adult cancer survivors diagnosed between 1990 and 2014 with 11 cancer diagnoses, were used. Data on sleep quality (3 categories: no, non-clinically, and clinically important sleep quality impairment) was collected through the insomnia scale of the EORTC QLQ-C30 and the PSQI for CRC survivors only (n = 1245). Clinical data were obtained through the Netherlands Cancer Registry. Cox regression analysis was used to assess adjusted hazard ratios (HRs). RESULTS 7195 participants were included, of which 36 % died (median follow-up since inclusion, 9 years). Clinically impaired sleep quality was associated with lower OS (HR, 1.17[1.05; 1.30]) compared to no sleep problems. Stratification by cancer diagnosis suggested a consistent pattern. After adjusting for depressive symptoms, sleep quality was no longer significantly associated with OS (HR, 1.10[0.97; 1.24]). Daytime dysfunction and long sleep duration were significantly associated with lower OS in CRC survivors, also after adjustment for depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION Cancer patients reporting clinically low sleep quality had a lower OS. However, this might be partly explained by patients' depressive symptoms. In CRC survivors, daytime dysfunction and long sleep duration were, independent of depressive symptoms, related to lower OS.

Abstract
Purpose: Obese women with breast cancer experience high symptom burden, poor quality of life, and increased mortality compared to non-obese women with breast cancer. Obesity-related changes to the bacteria of the gut, the GI microbiome, may be one such mechanism for these differences in outcomes. The purpose of this work is to report symptom burden and GI microbiome composition between obese and non-obese women with breast cancer to identify potential microbial influences for symptom severity. Methods: 59 women with breast cancer (26 obese, 33 non-obese) provided symptom reports using the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale and stool samples for 16S analysis one week after receiving chemotherapy. Symptom reports were summarized and examined for differences based on obesity. Fecal microbiome analysis was compared between groups using alpha-diversity (Shannon index), beta-diversity (Principal Coordinate Analysis with weighted UniFrac distances), and LASSO analysis of abundance of bacterial species. Results: While symptom burden was high, it did not differ based on obesity status. Alpha- and beta-diversity did not find significant differences based on obesity, but LASSO analysis identified eight bacteria to be significantly enriched in obese participants: Collinsella aerofacien, Prevotella 7, Coprobacillus cateniformis, Ruminococcus torques group, Agathobacter, Frisingicoccus, Roseburia inulinivorans, and Monoglobus pectinilyticus. Conclusions: Identifying biologic mechanisms driving symptoms is necessary for the development of therapies to reduce cancer-related symptom burden. While obesity may alter the GI microbiome and influence symptom burden in women with breast cancer, these effects may be outweighed by the effects of chemotherapy on the gut.

Abstract
Background The association between oxidative stress, as measured by the Oxidative Balance Score (OBS), and sleep quality remains unclear. The primary objective of this investigation was to clarify this relationship and to explore the potential involvement of oxidative stress and inflammation. Methods Data from 15,198 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2014 were analyzed. Sleep quality indicators, including sleep disorder, trouble, and duration, were assessed. The OBS, comprising information on 16 dietary nutrients and 4 lifestyle factors, was then calculated. Multivariable logistic and linear regression models were employed to investigate the correlation between OBS and sleep quality. Additionally, mediation analyses were conducted to evaluate the potential effects of oxidative stress and inflammation. Results We demonstrated a correlation between an elevated OBS and reduced sleep disorders (OR, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.58-0.91; p = 0.0055), reduced sleep trouble (OR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.69-0.96; p = 0.0174), and prolonged sleep duration (β 0.009; 95% CI, 0.0002-0.0160; p = 0.015) when comparing the highest and lowest tertiles. Dietary factors exhibited autonomous correlations with sleep duration, whereas lifestyle factors displayed independent associations with sleep trouble and sleep disorders. Moreover, the relationships between OBS and both sleep disorders and trouble were influenced by albumin, γ-glutamyl transferase, total bilirubin, and white blood cells, with combined mediation effects of 34.66 and 29.54%, respectively (both p < 0.001). Sensitivity analyses revealed a significant association between OBS and sleep disorder (p < 0.001). Conclusion This study revealed a positive correlation between an elevated OBS and improved sleep quality, manifested by decreased sleep disorders, mitigated sleep trouble, and prolonged sleep duration. This is potentially mediated by oxidative stress and inflammation. Therefore, the study underscores the importance of adopting a diet rich in antioxidants and healthy lifestyle choices to address sleep-related concerns, providing a novel avenue for enhancing overall sleep quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited research has examined the association between moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sedentary behavior (SB), and sleep-related outcomes in cancer survivors. Therefore, this study aimed to examine these associations using a nationally representative sample of US adults. METHODS Data from the 2005-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were analyzed. A total of 3229 adults with cancer histories were included. Physical activity was measured through accelerometry, and questions on daily activities, sedentary time, and sleep were collected during the household interview. Weighted multivariable analyses were conducted after accounting for the complex sampling design of the NHANES dataset. RESULTS After adjustments, physical activity and SB outcomes were associated with several self-reported sleep-related parameters. Increases in minutes of self-reported MVPA and SB were associated with a decreased likelihood of reporting ≥ 8 h of sleep (OR = 0.92, 95% CI = 0.86, 0.99 and OR = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.82, 0.95). Converse associations were found between device-measured MVPA and SB with the likelihood of reporting often/always feeling overly sleepy during the day (OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.75 and OR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.05, respectively). However, an increased likelihood of waking up too early in the morning (OR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.04) was observed with increases in minutes of device-measured MVPA. CONCLUSIONS A sensible strategy to decrease the frequency of sedentary breaks and increase minutes of physical activity throughout the day may reduce sleep complaints reported in cancer survivors.

Abstract
PURPOSE To (1) identify the prevalence of sleep problems in cancer survivors across cancer types and survivorship durations compared to a normative population and (2) determine demographic, clinical, lifestyle, and psychosocial determinants. METHOD Cancer survivors diagnosed between 2008 and 2015 (N = 6736) and an age- and sex-matched normative cohort (n = 415) completed the single sleep item of the EORTC QLQ-C30: Have you had trouble sleeping? Participants who responded with "quite a bit"/ "very much" were categorized as poor sleepers. A hierarchical multinomial logistic regression was used to identify determinants of sleep problems. RESULT The prevalence of sleep problems was higher in cancer survivors (17%) compared to the normative population (11%) (p < 0.001), varied across cancer types (10-26%) and did not vary based on survivorship duration. The full model showed that survivors who were female (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 2.26), overweight (AOR 1.50), had one (AOR 1.25) and ≥ 2 comorbidities (AOR 2.15), were former (AOR 1.30) and current (AOR 1.53) smokers and former alcohol drinkers (AOR 1.73), had a higher level of fatigue (AOR 1.05), anxiety (AOR 1.14), depression (AOR 1.11), and cognitive illness perceptions (AOR 1.02), had a higher odds for sleep problems. Higher education compared to lower education (AOR 0.67), having a partner (AOR 0.69), and obesity compared to normal BMI (AOR 0.86) were protective to sleep problems as well as high physical activity before adjusting for psychological factors (AOR 0.91). CONCLUSION Modifiable determinants of sleep problems include physical activity, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and illness perception. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Sleep problems after cancer deserve clinical attention. They may be improved by addressing modifiable lifestyle factors: increasing physical activity, stop smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption. As fatigue, depression, and illness perception seem related to sleep problems, lifestyle improvements may also improve these outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Greater physical activity is associated with improved outcomes in people living with and beyond cancer. However, most studies in exercise oncology use self-reported measures of physical activity. Few have explored agreement between self-reported and device-based measures of physical activity in people living with and beyond cancer. This study aimed to describe physical activity in adults affected by cancer across self-reported and device-assessed activity, to explore levels of agreement between these measures in terms of their utility for categorizing participants as meeting/not meeting physical activity guidelines, and to explore whether meeting guidelines is associated with fatigue, quality of life, and sleep quality. METHODS A total of 1348 adults living with and beyond cancer from the Advancing Survivorship Cancer Outcomes Trial completed a survey assessing fatigue, quality of life, sleep quality, and physical activity. The Godin-Shephard Leisure-Time Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to calculate a Leisure Score Index (LSI) and an estimate of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Average daily steps and weekly aerobic steps were derived from pedometers worn by participants. RESULTS The percentage of individuals meeting physical activity guidelines was 44.3% using LSI, 49.5% using MVPA, 10.8% using average daily steps, and 28.5% using weekly aerobic steps. Agreement (Cohen's κ) between self-reported and pedometer measures ranged from 0.13 (LSI vs. average daily steps) to 0.60 (LSI vs. MVPA). After adjusting for sociodemographic and health-related covariates, meeting activity guidelines using all measures was associated with not experiencing severe fatigue (odds ratios (ORs): 1.43-1.97). Meeting guidelines using MVPA was associated with no quality-of-life issues (OR = 1.53). Meeting guidelines using both self-reported measures were associated with good sleep quality (ORs: 1.33-1.40). CONCLUSION Less than half of all adults affected by cancer are meeting physical activity guidelines, regardless of measure. Meeting guidelines is associated with lower fatigue across all measures. Associations with quality of life and sleep differ depending on measure. Future research should consider the impact of physical activity measure on findings, and where possible, use multiple measures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress is correlated with sleep quality. A common tool for evaluating dietary and lifestyle exposures to oxidative stress is the Oxidative Balance Score (OBS), with higher OBS suggesting more substantial antioxidant exposures. The relationship between OBS and sleep quality is unclear. Investigating the association between OBS and sleep quality was the purpose of this study. METHODS To figure out the relationship between OBS and sleep quality, we utilized weighted linear models and weighted logistic regression. Adjusted models were also examined. RESULTS 6300 participants who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2014 were recruited. OBS was negatively associated with sleep disorder (OR: 0.97; 95 % CI: 0.94-0.99), and positively associated with sleep duration (MD: 0.02; 95%CI: 0.01-0.03). Within the range of OBS > 24, each unit increase in OBS will result in a 40 % reduction in sleep disorder, and a 26 % increasement in sleep duration after adjustment (all P for trend <0.05). Dietary and lifestyle components were closely related to sleep quality independently. The relationship between OBS and sleep quality was prominent in the female population under 50 years of age. After stratification by education level, this relationship persisted. LIMITATION This research was cross-sectional design, and it was not possible to deduce causality. CONCLUSION Diet and lifestyle might influence sleep quality by modulating oxidative balance. Antioxidant diets and lifestyles were important in reducing sleep problems and our study also provided new ideas for improving sleep quality.

Abstract
ObjectiveThe study aimed to analyze the research status, hotspots, and frontiers of global research on cancer and sleep through bibliometrics and provide references and guidance for future research.MethodsThe literature regarding cancer and sleep from 2002 to 2022 was searched from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. CiteSpace 5.6.R3 was performed for visualization analysis.ResultsA total of 1,172 publications were identified. The number of publications in the field has gradually increased over the past two decades. The United States had the most prominent contributions. Taipei Medical University and the University of California, San Francisco, and David Gozal were the most prolific institutions and author, respectively. The most published academic journal was Supportive Care in Cancer. The research hotspots can be summarized into the symptom cluster intervention for cancer survivors and the association between cancer and melatonin and/or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The complex interaction between cancer and sleep disruption and the influencing factors of sleep quality may be the emerging trends of research.ConclusionThis study systematically analyzed the hotspots and frontiers in the field of cancer and sleep and called for strengthening cooperation among countries, institutions, and authors. In addition, intervention measures for the cancer symptom cluster, the bioavailability of exogenous melatonin, the causal relationship between OSA and cancer, the mechanism of tumor-induced sleep disruption, the dose–response relationship between sleep duration and cancer risk, and the path relationship between sleep quality influencing factors may be the focus of future research.

Abstract
Objective It is well-known that patients with cancer frequently experience sleep problems, and that sleep quality is associated with general quality of life (QoL). The aims of this study were to analyze the relationship between sleep problems and other components of QoL in more detail and to investigate sex and age differences in sleep quality in cancer patients in comparison with the general population. Method This study comprised one general population sample (n = 4,476) and eight samples with cancer patients (n between 323 and 4,020). Sleep Quality was measured using the QoL questionnaire EORTC QLQ-C30. Results All of the cancer patient groups reported more sleep problems than the general population. Sleep problems were associated with all facets of QoL both in cancer patients and in the general population. The highest associations were found in cancer patients for fatigue (r = 0.52) and emotional functioning (r = -0.47). The association between sleep quality and general QoL was lower in the cancer samples (r = -0.37) than in the general population (r = -0.46). Female cancer patients reported markedly more sleep problems than male patients did (d = 0.45), while this sex difference was lower in the general population (d = 0.15). In contrast to the general population, younger cancer patients had greater trouble sleeping than older patients did (d = -0.17). Conclusion The results underline the significance of the role mental factors play in sleep problems. Health care providers should pay special attention to female patients and younger patients concerning this issue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both sleep quality and quantity are essential for normal brain development throughout childhood; however, the association between preterm birth and sleep problems in preschoolers is not yet clear, and the effects of gestational age across the full range from preterm to post-term have not been examined. Our study investigated the sleep outcomes of children born at very-preterm (<31 weeks), moderate-preterm (32-33 weeks), late-preterm (34-36 weeks), early-term (37-38 weeks), full-term (39-40 weeks), late-term (41 weeks) and post-term (>41 weeks). METHODS A national retrospective cohort study was conducted with 114,311 children aged 3-5 years old in China. Children's daily sleep hours and pediatric sleep disorders defined by the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) were reported by parents. Linear regressions and logistic regression models were applied to examine gestational age at birth with the sleep outcomes of children. RESULTS Compared with full-term children, a significantly higher CSHQ score, and hence worse sleep, was observed in very-preterm (β = 1.827), moderate-preterm (β = 1.409), late-preterm (β = 0.832), early-term (β = 0.233) and post-term (β = 0.831) children, all p<0.001. The association of pediatric sleep disorder (i.e. CSHQ scores>41) was also seen in very-preterm (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.287 95% confidence interval [CI] (1.157, 1.433)), moderate-preterm (AOR = 1.249 95% CI (1.110, 1.405)), late-preterm (AOR = 1.111 95% CI (1.052, 1.174)) and post-term (AOR = 1.139 95% CI (1.061, 1.222)), all p<0.001. Shorter sleep duration was also found in very-preterm (β = -0.303), moderate-preterm (β = -0.282), late-preterm (β = -0.201), early-term (β = -0.068) and post-term (β = -0.110) compared with full-term children, all p<0.01. Preterm and post-term-born children had different sleep profiles as suggested by subscales of the CSHQ. CONCLUSIONS Every degree of premature, early-term and post-term birth, compared to full-term, has an association with sleep disorders and shortened daily sleep duration. Preterm, early-term, and post-term should therefore all be monitored with an increased threat of sleep disorder that requires long-term monitoring for adverse sleep outcomes in preschoolers.
