Abstract
Introduction The incidence of dengue and its complications increases globally, mainly in areas where it is endemic; however, little literature evaluates outcomes in kidney transplant recipients (KTR). The present analysis aimed to determine the incidence, signs and symptoms, and allograft dysfunction in dengue-infected KTR. Methods Systematic review of the literature following PRISMA 2020 indications with studies included until November 24, 2023. Results Of 309 articles found, seven full-text studies were identified for analysis. 4337 KTRs with 214 dengue cases were evaluated. The incidence of dengue was 4.93%, varying between geographic regions. The average age was 41.50 years, and 61.21% were men. A mortality of 7.01% was reported. The symptoms were fever 83.18%, arthralgia 19.46%, myalgia 43.24% and headache 34.18%. The proportions of febrile dengue, with warning signs and severe dengue, were 63.55%, 23.83% and 11.68%, respectively. Transplant dysfunction and loss occurred in 63.08% and 4.67%, respectively. Conclusions Although the global distribution of dengue in KTR is unknown, there is a variable incidence between geographical areas and study times in which the KTR are evaluated. There is a high incidence of febrile symptomatology and transplant dysfunction consistent with global cohorts for non-KTR and KTR patients, respectively. Dysfunction is a prevalent event in KTRs with dengue infection, so correct screening should be done for donors and transplant candidates.

Abstract
Chikungunya (CHIKV) and Zika (ZIKV) viruses, both mosquito-borne, often circulate simultaneously, raising concerns about the effects of coinfection. This study evaluated cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors in 12 patients with concurrent CHIKV and ZIKV infections confirmed by RT-qPCR. Clinical data and 45 immune mediators were analyzed. Coinfected and monoinfected patients exhibited similar symptoms, although ZIKV-infected individuals experienced fewer instances of fever. No patients had persistent symptoms or required hospitalization. Chemokines CCL5, CXCL1, and CXCL10 were elevated across all groups. CHIKV-infected patients showed higher levels of CCL2, CCL4, EGF, CXCL12, and IFN-α compared to controls, while IL-1RA, IL-8, and IFN-γ were elevated in both CHIKV and coinfected groups. SCF was elevated only in the ZIKV group. Overall, CHIKV and ZIKV coinfection presented mild clinical symptoms similar to monoinfections and demonstrated a moderate inflammatory response.

Abstract
Immunosuppression in cancer poses challenges for immunotherapy and highlights the vulnerability of immunocompromised patients to viral infections. This study explored how Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection potentially inhibits B16-F10 melanoma-induced immunosuppressive effects on T cells and RAW 264.7 macrophages. We found high expression of CHIKV entry genes in melanoma and other cancers, with B16-F10 cells demonstrating greater susceptibility to CHIKV infection than non-tumorigenic cells. Interestingly, the CHIKV-infected B16-F10 cell culture supernatant (B16-F10-CS) reversed the immunosuppressive effects of uninfected B16-F10-CS on T cells. This reversal was characterised by decreased STAT3 activation and increased MAPK activation in T cells, an effect amplified by interleukin 10 (IL-10) receptor blockade. In RAW 264.7 cells, B16-F10-CS enhanced CHIKV infectivity without triggering activation. However, blocking the IL-10 receptor (IL-10R) in RAW 264.7 reduced CHIKV infection. CHIKV infection and IL-10R blockade synergistically inhibited B16-F10-CS-mediated polarisation of RAW 264.7 cells towards immunosuppressive macrophage. Our findings suggest that CHIKV modulates cancer-induced immunosuppression through IL-10-dependent pathways, providing new insights into viral-cancer interactions. This research may contribute to developing novel antiviral immunotherapies and virotherapies beneficial for cancer patients and immunocompromised individuals.

Abstract
Dengue virus (DENV) represents a significant global health burden, with 50% of the world's population at risk of infection, and there is an urgent need for next-generation vaccines. Virus-like particle (VLP)-based vaccines, which mimic the antigenic structure of the virus but lack the viral genome, are an attractive approach. Here, we describe a dengue VLP (DENVLP) vaccine which generates a neutralizing antibody response against all four DENV serotypes in 100% of immunized non-human primates for up to 1 year. Additionally, DENVLP vaccination produced no ADE response against any of four DENV serotypes in vitro. DENVLP vaccination reduces viral replication in a non-human primate challenge model. We also show that transfer of purified IgG from immunized monkeys into immunodeficient mice protects against subsequent lethal DENV challenge, indicating a humoral mechanism of protection. These results indicate that this DENVLP vaccine is immunogenic and can be considered for clinical evaluation. Immunization of non-human primates with a tetravalent DENVLP vaccine induces high levels of neutralizing antibodies and reduces the severity of infection for all four dengue serotypes.IMPORTANCEDengue is a viral disease that infects nearly 400 million people worldwide and causes dengue hemorrhagic fever, which is responsible for 10,000 deaths each year. Currently, there is no therapeutic drug licensed to treat dengue infection, which makes the development of an effective vaccine essential. Virus-like particles (VLPs) are a safe and highly immunogenic platform that can be used in young children, immunocompromised individuals, as well as healthy adults. In this study, we describe the development of a dengue VLP vaccine and demonstrate that it induces a robust immune response against the dengue virus for over 1 year in monkeys. The immunity induced by this vaccine reduced live dengue infection in both murine and non-human primate models. These results indicate that our dengue VLP vaccine is a promising vaccine candidate.

Abstract
This meta-analysis aims to systematically review and analyze available studies on the association between myocarditis and dengue viral fever. A comprehensive literature search was carried out using several databases. Mantel-Haenszel odds ratios and associated 95% confidence intervals were produced to report the overall effect size using random effect models. Besides, random effects models were used to calculate the overall pooled prevalence. Data from 26 articles (6622 dengue patients) showed that pooled estimate of myocarditis in dengue fever was 12.4% (95% CI, 8.41-17.08). Higher prevalence was seen in reports from Asia (15.2%) compared to that from Latin America (3.6%). Besides, the pooled prevalence of severity and mortality was 34% (95% CI, 20.49-49.04) and 26.44% (95% CI, 18.07-35.78) respectively. Significantly higher prevalence rates of severe disease in the pediatric population (52.4%) and studies with a higher percentage of females (52.1%) were also observed. However, higher mortality rates were seen in the adult population (34.8%) compared with the pediatric age group. Further, myocarditis in dengue patients was associated with increased risk of severity (RR = 2.44, 95% CI 1.007-5.93, P = 0.048) and mortality (RR = 19.41, 95% CI 7.19-52.38, P < 0.001) compared with dengue patients without myocarditis. No significant publication bias was evident in the meta-analysis. The findings highlight the clinical significance of early identification and management of myocarditis in patients with dengue fever.

Abstract
Transfusion medicine is traditionally a strong/fundamental part of clinical practice, saving hundreds of millions of lives. However, blood-borne or transmitted infections are a well-known and feared possibility, a risk we relentlessly mitigate. Pathogens are continuously and rather quickly changing, so during the last decade, many, sometimes exotic, new pathogens and diseases were recorded and analyzed, and some of them were proved to be transmitted with transfusions. Blood or blood component transfusions are carried out after cautious preparative screening and inactivation maneuvers, but in some instances, newly recognized agents might escape from standard screening and inactivation procedures. Here, we try to focus on some of these proven or potentially pathogenic transfusion-transmitted agents, especially in immunocompromised patients or bone marrow transplantation settings. These pathogens are sometimes new challenges for preparative procedures, and there is a need for more recent, occasionally advanced, screening and inactivation methods to recognize and eliminate the threat a new or well-known pathogen can pose. Pathogen transmission is probably even more critical in hemophiliacs or bone marrow transplant recipients, who receive plasma-derived factor preparations or blood component transfusions regularly and in large quantities, sometimes in severely immunosuppressed conditions. Moreover, it may not be emphasized enough that transfusions and plasma-derived product administrations are essential to medical care. Therefore, blood-borne transmission needs continued alertness and efforts to attain optimal benefits with minimized hazards.

Abstract
Literature discussing endemic and regionally limited infections in recipients of haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) outside western Europe and North America is scarce. This Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (WBMT) article is part one of two papers aiming to provide guidance to transplantation centres around the globe regarding infection prevention and treatment, and considerations for transplantation based on current evidence and expert opinion. These recommendations were initially formulated by a core writing team from the WBMT and subsequently underwent multiple revisions by infectious disease experts and HSCT experts. In this paper, we summarise the data and provide recommendations on several endemic and regionally limited viral and bacterial infections, many of which are listed by WHO as neglected tropical diseases, including Dengue, Zika, yellow fever, chikungunya, rabies, brucellosis, melioidosis, and leptospirosis.

Abstract
Reports on tropical infections among kidney transplant (KT) recipients have increased in recent years, mainly because of the growing number of KT programs located in tropical and subtropical areas, and greater mobility or migration between different areas of the world. Endemic in emerging and developing regions, like most countries in Latin America, tropical infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in this population. Tropical infections in KT recipients may exhibit different pathways for acquisition compared with those in nonrecipients, such as transmission through a graft and reactivation of a latent infection triggered by immunosuppression. Clinical presentation may differ compared with that in immunocompetent patients, and there are also particularities in diagnostic aspects, treatment, and prognosis. KT patients must be screened for latent infections and immunized properly. Last, drug-drug interactions between immunosuppressive agents and drugs used to treat tropical infections are an additional challenge in KT patients. In this review, we summarize the management of tropical infections in KT patients.

Abstract
The influence of chronic immunosuppression on the course of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection in recipients of solid organ transplantation (SOT) is still unsettled. Scarce data suggest that the course of CHIKV infection is generally benign in this population. In addition, the occurrence of severe atypical manifestations associated with CHIKV has not been well documented among SOT recipients. In this report, we describe a 64-year-old male liver transplant recipient who was admitted with fever, headache, arthralgia, left palpebral ptosis, mydriasis, and right hemiparesis. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging did not reveal any alteration suggestive of acute infection. Nevertheless, CHIKV was detected in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with a real-time reverse transcriptase assay. Other PCR assays carried out in CSF were negative for HSV-1 and 2, cytomegalovirus, dengue virus (DENV), and Zika virus (ZIKV). CHIKV viremia was also detected while PCR assays for ZIKV and DENV in the blood were negative. ZIKV viruria was simultaneously present in this case. All neurologic manifestations waned within 2 weeks after the onset. This report shows that chikungunya must be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute neurologic disease in SOT recipients who live in or have recently traveled to endemic areas.

Abstract
In 2005, a chikungunya virus outbreak devastated the tropical island of Reunion, infecting a third of the total population. Motivated by the Reunion Island case study, we investigate the theoretic potential for two intervention measures under both voluntary and mandatory protocols to control a vector-borne disease when there is risk of the disease becoming endemic. The first measure uses insect repellent to prevent mosquito bites, while the second involves emigrating to the neighboring Mauritius Island to avoid infection. There is a threshold on the cost of using repellent above which both voluntary and mandatory regimes find it optimal to forgo usage. Below that threshold, mandatory usage protocols will eradicate the disease; however, voluntary adoption leaves the disease at a small endemic level. Emigrating from the island to avoid infection results in a tragedy-of-the-commons effect: while being potentially beneficial to specific susceptible individuals, the remaining islanders paradoxically face a higher risk of infection. Mandated relocation of susceptible individuals away from the epidemic is viable only if the cost of this relocation is several magnitudes lower than the cost of infection. Since this assumption is unlikely to hold for chikungunya, it is optimal to discourage such emigration for the benefit of the entire population. An underlying assumption about the conservation of human-vector encounter rates in mosquito biting behavior informs our conclusions and may warrant additional experimental verification.

Abstract
Zika virus (ZIKV), a neurotropic single-stranded RNA flavivirus, remains an important cause of congenital infection, fetal microcephaly, and Guillain-Barré syndrome in populations where ZIKV has adapted to a nexus involving the Aedes mosquitoes and humans. To date, outbreaks of ZIKV have occurred in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific islands, the Americas, and the Caribbean. Emerging evidence, however, suggests that the virus also has the potential to cause infections in Europe, where autochtonous transmission of the virus has been identified. This review focuses on evolving ZIKV epidemiology, modes of transmission and host-virus interactions. The clinical manifestations, diagnostic issues relating to cross-reactivity to the dengue flavivirus and concerns surrounding ZIKV infection in pregnancy are discussed. In the last section, current challenges in treatment and prevention are outlined.

Abstract
Currently, there are no harmonized guidelines which govern skin banking in the Asia Pacific region. Therefore, skin banks are either unregulated or rely on their nation's legislation or international accreditation to uphold their quality standards. A new set of skin banking guidelines was developed through a comprehensive review and collation of best international practices for the Asia Pacific Burn Association (APBA) members, from donor screening and testing, to skin recovery, processing, storage and distribution, and quality assurance. National regulatory requirements reviewed include the European directives, Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration and Singapore's tissue banking standards. Further technical and quality management recommendations are referenced from the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB), the United States Food and Drug Administration standards and guidance documents, various relevant European guides, Japanese Society of Tissue Transplantation guidelines and the Asia Pacific Association of Surgical Tissue Banking. Adapted mainly from the AATB standards, the new Asia Pacific Burn Association Guidelines for Skin Banking in Therapeutic Applications offer a comprehensive manual, addressing: governance and contracts; staff responsibilities; quality management; facilities, equipment and supplies management; donor consent and testing; and recommendations of good practices pertaining to skin recovery, processing, storage and distribution. Besides complementing current generic regulations, they provide technical specifications of major aspects unaddressed in most legislations. This inaugural set of new regional skin banking guidelines would be a start for regional members of the APBA to adopt, and will hopefully culminate in a set of standards so that, in the long run, skin allografts from this region can be of similar quality, which can simplify import process and facilitate the exchange of allografts between members.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to analyze the outcomes of children with Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) treated in Brazil with hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). METHODS We performed a retrospective analysis of 44 pediatrics patients transplanted between 1990 and 2018. The median age of patients was 5 years, and 57% were male. Twenty-five received their first HCT from an HLA-matched sibling donor (MSD), 12 from a HLA matched unrelated bone marrow donor (MUD 10/10, n = 12) and 7 other HLA mismatched donors (MMD). RESULTS After a median follow-up of 4 years, estimate 5-year overall survival (OS) for the entire cohort was 70%, 80% for MSD group, 73% for MUD, and 29% for MMD. Thirty-eight out of the 44 evaluable patients engrafted successfully. Primary and secondary graft failure was observed in five and three patients, respectively. Rates of grade II-IV and III-IV acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) were 25% and 18%, respectively. Nine patients developed chronic GVHD (cGVHD). CONCLUSION Overall survival rates observed after HLA matched donors transplant for DBA were comparable to those reported from higher-income countries and international registries.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to conduct a bibliographic survey and correlates the presence of arboviroses in the eyeball with the main eye changes presented by the population under study. This study is a systematic review of journals and indexed articles, carried out between January 2019 and June 2019, in which there was a query in the Pubmed/Medline and Scielo databases without temporal restriction. In addition to the aforementioned databases, the Brazilian Association of Organ Transplantation Association database, which provides epidemiological data on organ and tissue transplants in Brazil, was used as a research source. The Midwest region contributed to the increase in the number of organ transplants in Brazil. The number of corneal transplants in Brazil surpassed the number of organ transplants by four times. Several ophthalmic changes associated with Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika virus infections have been diagnosed; however, few studies have identified the presence of the virus in the eyeball. Arboviruses are of great relevance to public health due to a number of factors, ranging from the diversity of infectious agents involved and the plurality of clinical manifestations because the absence of efficient laboratory support, leading to delayed disease confirmation due to lack of differential diagnostics available. Added to these difficulties is the lack of specific therapy, leaving only the symptomatic control of clinical manifestations as the only treatment option. However, the manifestations are directly associated with the decreased quality of vision and consequently the quality of life of patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW In this review, we present the overview of emerging and neglected viruses associated with liver involvement. RECENT FINDINGS Hepatitis E virus (HEV) emerged in the last two decades, causing hepatitis in many parts of the world. Moreover, liver involvement was also described in some emerging arboviral infections. Many reports showed dengue-associated liver injury; however, chikungunya, West Nile, tick-borne encephalitis, and Zika virus are rarely associated with clinically manifest liver disease. In addition, some neglected highly prevalent viruses such as adenoviruses and parvovirus B19 are capable of causing hepatitis in specific population groups. Anelloviruses (torque teno virus/torque teno mini virus/torque teno midi virus, SEN virus), human bocavirus, pegiviruses, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus have shown a little potential for causing hepatitis, but their role in the etiology of liver disease remains to be determined. In addition to the well-known hepatotropic viruses, many emerging and neglected viruses have been associated with liver diseases. The number of emerging zoonotic viruses has been increasingly recognized. While zoonotic potential of HEV is well documented, the recent identification of new hepatitis-related animal viruses such as HEV strains from rabbits and camels, non-primate hepaciviruses in domestic dogs and horses, as well as equine and porcine pegivirus highlights the possible zoonotic transmission in the context of "One Health." However, zoonotic potential and hepatotropism of animal hepatitis viruses remain to be determined.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To outline the impact of transplant tourism on the type and severity of post-transplant infections that may be seem in returning transplant tourists. This review outlines infections that might be expected and provides recommendations on screening tests that may assist in the diagnosis and management of such patients. RECENT FINDINGS Transplant tourists may develop unusual or resistant infections that pose a public health risk in their home country. The practice of transplant tourism is associated with a significantly increased risk of surgical and infectious complications after transplant. Returning transplant tourists require a thorough evaluation for active and latent infections. Transplant centers must be vigilant for new and emerging pathogens in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dengue virus (DENV) is a significant threat to public health in tropical and subtropical regions, where the frequency of human migration is increasing. Transmission of DENV from donors to recipients after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has been steadily described. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Freshly isolated bone marrow (BM) was subjected to DENV infection, followed by multicolor fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis. Virus in supernatants was collected and analyzed by plaque assay. RESULTS DENV-1 to DENV-4 could effectively infect freshly obtained BM and produced infectious virus. DENV infection did not change the quantitative population of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs), megakaryocytic progenitor cells (MkPs) and megakaryocytes. Additionally, DENV antigen, nonstructural protein 1, was enriched in HSPCs and MkPs of DENV infected marrow cells. CD34+, CD133+, or CD61+ cells sorted out from BM were not only the major contributing targets facilitating the DENV infection directly but also facilitated the spread of DENV into other cells when cocultured. CONCLUSION Results suggest that DENV can efficiently infect HSPCs, which might jeopardize the recipients if DENV-infected cells were subsequently used. We therefore raise the need for DENV screening for both the donors and recipients of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, especially for donors exposed to endemic areas, to mitigate DENV infection in immunocompromised recipients.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Donor-derived transmission of infectious diseases is a well-recognized complication of solid organ transplantation (SOT). Most donor-derived disease transmissions are expected. Although uncommon, unexpected donor-derived infections can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and as the volume of patients undergoing SOT increases, the number of infections transmitted through organ donation can also be expected to rise. The growing gap between the number of patients waiting for transplantation and available organs continue in fact to be the number one issue facing the transplant community. As a consequence the major focus in organ transplantation has been developing strategies to increase the available organs, including the use of organs from donors with infections or risky behaviors that have disqualified them from the donation in the past. RECENT FINDINGS In addition to the commonly reported donor-derived transmissions, an increasing number of studies have reported unusual infections transmitted by SOT. SUMMARY Transplant surgeons and physicians should increase their awareness toward uncommon donor-derived infections including them in the differential diagnosis of unusual clinical pictures in their recipients.

Abstract
In recent years, Zika, Chikungunya, Dengue, West Nile Fever, and Yellow Fever epidemics have generated some concerns. Besides difficulties related to vector control, there are challenges related to behavior of pathologies not yet fully understood. The transplanted population requires additional care due to immunosuppressive drugs. Furthermore, the potential risk of transmission during donation is another source of uncertainty and generates debate among nephrologists in transplant centers. Do the clinical outcomes and prognoses of these infections tend to be more aggressive in this population? Is there a risk of viral transmission via kidney donation? In this review article, we address these issues and discuss the relationship between arbovirus and renal transplantation.

Abstract
These updated guidelines from the Infectious Diseases Community of Practice of the American Society of Transplantation review recommendations for prevention and management of travel-related infection in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients as well as risks associated with transplant tourism. Counseling regarding travel post-transplant should be included during the pre-transplant evaluation, and all SOT recipients should be seen by a travel medicine specialist prior to traveling to destinations with higher rates of infection. Patients should be advised on vaccine-preventable illnesses as well as any need for prophylaxis (ie, malaria) based on their individual travel itineraries. Information with regards to specific recommendations for vaccines and prophylactic medications, along with drug-drug interactions, is summarized. Counseling should be provided for modifiable risks and exposures (ie, food and water safety, and insect bite prevention) as well as non-infectious travel topics. These guidelines also briefly address risks associated with transplant tourism and specific infections to consider if patients seek care for transplants done in foreign countries.

Abstract
Recent years have brought a rise in newly emergent viral infections, primarily in the form of previously known arthropod-transmitted viruses that have increased significantly in both incidence and geographical range. Of particular note are DENV, CHIKV, and ZIKV, which are transmitted mostly by Aedes species of mosquitoes that exhibit a wide and increasing global distribution. Being important pathogens for the general population, these viruses have the potential to be devastating in the international transplant community, with graft rejection and death as possible outcomes of infection. In this review, we discuss the current state of knowledge for these viruses as well as repercussions of infection in the solid organ and HSCT population, with a focus, when possible, on pediatric patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Kidney transplant (KT) recipients in dengue-endemic areas are at risk of exposure. We investigated the epidemiology and outcomes from dengue in KT recipients at our transplant center and conducted a literature review. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a 20-year retrospective study of KT recipients who were diagnosed with laboratory-confirmed dengue from January 1997 to September 2017 according to the 2009 World Health Organization (WHO) classification. We analyzed clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes. RESULTS There were 13 (0.7%) dengue cases among 1917 KT recipients with a median age of 39 years (interquartile ranges [IQR], 22-46); 54% were males. Cases occurred with a median onset of 24 months (IQR, 6-122) after KT. Dengue was diagnosed via dengue NS1 antigen (85%), IgM antibodies (38.5%), or RT-PCR (15.4%). Patients were classified as having dengue without warning sign (30.8%), with warning sign (53.8%), or severe dengue (15.4%). All patients resolved without complications, except one had hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. Ten (76.9%) patients experienced eGFR reduction with a median of 13.7 mL/min/1.73 m2 (IQR, 8.3-20.5); eight (80%) had a full allograft function recovery. CONCLUSIONS Dengue in KT recipients in endemic areas is uncommon. Although a transient decline in allograft function can occur, the overall clinical and allograft outcomes seem to be favorable.
